  • Another feature we got for Robin's craft room was IKEA's sturdy NORDEN Gateleg table. It weighs 90lbs by itself, without any of it's storage compartments full of things. I wanted to make it a little easier for Robin to maneuver around her room, so I added some wheels. Here's a quick tip showing exactly what I did and how it turned out. :-)
    These are what I should have got amzn.to/2HjvBtB
    get 2 sets of the 1" as you need 6 wheels, but you will only use the locking ones on the legs that do not meet the table top support (as noted at end of the video)

    • @Thejohnnyoshow
      @Thejohnnyoshow  2 роки тому +1

      I did not have to predrill but the wheels may or may not have the same screws that it had at the time of my purchase. just be aware not to get too close to the edges. Also one subscriber put the wheels on the swing out legs for the table top at an angle so the 2 screws are on opposing sides. unlike where I put both screws on 1 side. I have not had any issue doing it my way, but I think their idea of putting it at an angle is better

    Do you think the wheels would support this table if it is used regularly as a dinner table for 2 and occasionally seating 4 with both tabletops in use? Would those activities be under the 150 lb weight limit?

    • @Thejohnnyoshow
      @Thejohnnyoshow  4 роки тому +1

      you have the ability to support around 50 more pounds (if you don't count the weight of the table), it would all depend on what you would be storing in the drawers. just remember you want to keep it so your not putting more then 50 more lbs on it. the wheels can probably hold more then that, but they are only advertised to support 25lbs per wheel and the table is almost 100, so you would have 50lbs to work with.

    • @Thejohnnyoshow
      @Thejohnnyoshow  4 роки тому +3

      we only have the concrete and wood flooring. these wheels will be fine on a berber carpet, and perhaps a very short shag as long as its there is not extra think squishy carpet pad. I think this table once loaded with stuff and its own weight would be pretty hard to move around on a tall shag carpet.

  • @dseidel01

    on the half-width legs, how have the wheels brackets and legs survived only being held with 2 screws?
    With the table being moved often?

    • @Thejohnnyoshow
      @Thejohnnyoshow  3 роки тому +2

      they have been fine, those wheels do not carry much of the weight beings they are only for the fold-out tabletops and not the heaviest part of the table. But if you're concerned you could also use a liquid nail in addition to the 2 screws under the mount for extra support

    Would like to get your opinion, should I install the wheels directly before I assembling the table? Which way would be easier? Thanks in advance❤️

    • @Thejohnnyoshow
      @Thejohnnyoshow  3 роки тому +3

      the table does weight 100lbs, make sure if you put the wheels on after its together you have a soft surface to put it upside down on like i did so you do not scratch the top.
      personally i think putting them on after its built would be easier, because then you have the table holding all the legs in place and you can really see what your doing. if you put them on before hand you're just trying to attach a wheel to a stick with nothing solid to hold it while you work.
      I had my daughter help me flip the table over just to make sure nothing got damaged in the process. do not try to flip it over by yourself, to many moving parts. best to have 2 people just to make sure the table top does not fall open to the ground while your flipping it and get damaged

    Out of curiosity, are you still using the table? How are the wheels holding up?
    Although each wheel is rated for 25 lbs and the whole table is only 90-something lbs, I *suspect* that the wheels under the gatelegs might have given sooner than anticipated. The wheel under each gateleg needs to support about half the weight of the unfolded table board, and then you'll put stuff on the table, which adds additional weight, and then when you use the table, you might inadvertently put more weight from your body onto the table.

    Hey did you use 4 or 6 wheels? I’m assembling my table tomorrow and would love to throw on the wheels too!

    • @Thejohnnyoshow
      @Thejohnnyoshow  Рік тому +2

      Use six wheels for the table. Place two locking wheels on the support legs of the table's top, which swing out. When the support legs are folded in, you should have two locking wheels on the main body of the table. Make sure these wheels are not on the same side as the swing leg wheels when closed to avoid any collision between the locks when rolling the table while it is closed. The last two wheels should be non-locking and those will be on the body near the swing leg wheels when closed. In the video, I didn't show the non-locking wheels because the ones I purchased were all locking wheels. However, the locking wheels sometimes interfere with each other when rolling the table in its closed position. I haven't replaced them with non-locking wheels yet hence no video, but I included the link to a package that contains both locking and non-locking wheels so that you will not have this issue. I hope this clarification makes sense.

      I did use 4, however in the video I say that is a mistake.
      you should buy only 2 locking wheels.
      Do not use 4.
      Do not put locking wheels on the support legs.
      When the support legs are folded in, put the locking wheels only where there are not 2 wheels next to each other.
      Put the locking wheels on the corners of the table where they can freely rotate when the support legs are in.

      @@monisamontoya288 i assume this is on the table top support legs that fold out as the main legs have plenty of clearance all the way around. so if you caught it before it was split was completely out of control, i would probably fill the hole with this www.loctiteproducts.com/en/products/fix/general-purpose/loctite_extreme_gluenodripgel.html. once dried completely you could get a very small brush and some model paint in the color of the table just touch up the crack if it shows to much. then pre drill with a smaller bit holes a little bit further from the edge and try again. but that will probably be our last shot, if you get too close to the edge again you probably will not have enough to work with to repair a second time. i would give the glue a lot of time to set up you want it to be very solid before pre drilling new holes. also you could put a little of that glue between the wheel mount that the leg to add more strength beings its been compromised. be careful to keep the glue where you want it, you don't want to get it on your hands and then touch other parts of the table or you will have a mess. If you don't mind going to my facebook page facebook.com/thejohnnyoshow and posting pics of the damage i can just see if this would still be how i would address the problem

      @@Thejohnnyoshow Thank you for taking the time and interest to address the issue for me. I will go get that glue. I didn't notice the splits until I was finished (the screws I used were too thick so I have to change to a smaller width) so it's the kind of error you only make once. My next project is wheels on two Kallax units and now I will be more careful . Thanx.

    Hi Johnny, I bought the same table from Ikea and was thinking the same thing....about adding casters so that I can make it more versatile and mobile. After looking at this on Amazon, the 1" wheel looks very small. Do you think 2" wheels will be better? Will it work on this table or will it be too big?
    Thanks for your video! I gave you a thumbs up.

      at the time when i was shopping the plate on the 2" wheels were too big maybe they have better options now but i don't think so. will the table be on carpet or on a smooth hard surface? i ask because the 1 inch wheels work fine on a hard surface but on carpet they would not roll as well

    Does it make the table too tall to feel comfortable sitting at?

      Also I love how you set up the Kallax shelves on the wall.

      Trying to post a question to the creator but it looks like youtube keeps deleting my comment...Curious what your thoughts are about an L plate 1.5 inch caster wheel.

      Apparently I can’t tell you what website I used even in the most discrete fashion, because that comment was taken down too, but I’m sure you can guess.

      i'm not sure why i cant see your comment on the video, but i just logged into my account and i can see your comment here. They may work better for the legs that fold out to hold the table top as long as the dimensions are right. Im not sure i would like them for the main legs though. I feel the square plate gets a firmer attachment for the main table legs. But yeah for the fold out legs the L is probably better if it is the right size plate. If you mix the 2 types of wheels you just want to make sure they end up being the same height from the ground of course.

    Thanks for this, I bought two sets using your link. Hopefully the legs won't split like another in the comment section here. Also, with the brakes locked, you don't notice too much moving around do you? Plan on doing this mod for a boardgame/puzzle table. Thanks for the vid and thanks in advance!

      no its pretty solid , it does not really move when breaks are set, at least not for us
