I like the metal trend. It's durable, recyclable, and the white never yellows! I have some metal side tables from Ikea that look exactly the same as when we bought it 8 years ago. Meanwhile the melamine shoe bench has yellowed and stained in less than half the time.
Thank you, I grew up in the 90s and I love it. It’s so cheery, obviously we are not painting the whole room avocado green, it’s just 1 or 2 chairs, perfect cheery accent pieces.
IKEA actually caters to the entire student community in Sweden and other European countries (I did my master's in Sweden and its all we could afford at that student building lol). From their POV, it is actually pretty smart to go and target that age range. Thank you for this really interesting video :)
Oh gawd! I was married in 1974 and the vomititus colors of orange and Avacado green were gross then and they still are today somethings never change. I collected Shaker and primitive painted furniture. My three children have some pieces along with tradition things. I find my old style looks fabulous still today. My home a 200+ historic one is on house tours from time to time. It works and I’m still happy at almost 70. Love to you Nick😊
Yeah, I was married in 1975 . I’ve always hated orange in most any tint or hue, and though green is my favorite color, not avocado green. And the two colors together I found absolutely distressing! I didn’t mind the harvest gold though, and actually purchased a refrigerator in that color. I was SO relieved when 1980 brought the natural and organic, neutral colors and shades of brown and off-white.
I graduated in 1974 as well as got married and I HATED the Spanish wrought Iron crap, the BOHO crap and the MODERN crap. I still HATE IT and always will!!
As a late 30s woman I cringe so hard with some of the “Y2K” fashions being redone. I’ve come to the conclusion if you were around to see these styles live and die, they’re never going to come back as appealing in your eyes. Which is why I hate tribal tattoos but rather love a lot of this collection!
I am also an older Gen-X. The house we bought in 1999 came with avocado green kitchen counters. They’re still here. They need replacing, but I like them. lol The orange is ok in small amounts as decor, though I don’t currently have anything that color in my house. Harvest gold is an absolute no. My mother had a 1950’s style pink kitchen the whole time I lived at home, and my grandparents’ house remained firmly in the 1950’s, so I didn’t live with it to now hate it. Mom did have some harvest gold small appliances, so there’s my issue with that color. lol
I am 25 & I have the black version of Dyvlinge chair. They were sold out of the green one, but I am very happy I got the black colour. I have several pieces from this collection since I recently moved out of my parents house & into a 24 square feet studio apartment this year. I filled this tiny space with bright colour & it makes me so happy!
As the retro trend advances through the decades I'm getting a little anxiety. I'm giving advance warning that, when Dusty Rose and Country Blue comes back, I'm going to find a cave to hide in.
That hideousness was around 1989-1993ish … a 50 years trend turn around puts that at about the late 2030’s/early 40’s … sooo about 20 years from now. I guess when I’m 83 years old, that might be a soothing color scheme with happy geese with floating ribbons motifs and big Laura Ashley mauve & hunter green rose floral patterns with intertwining greenery!
@@MomCat6000 You paint a vivid memory picture. I'm starting to feel an attack of hives coming on. People have told me that my hatred of mauve is unnaturally virulent.
I have nothing against colour and blue, orange and yellow are all happy, beachy things, but a lot of this stuff is reminding me of primary school. I'm in my 50s so was a kid in the 70s and I swear they used to store books on metal carts like that in my classroom.
Older millennial here, I love this new trend and i love switch from greige to colors; and what is more important from perfect boring empty minimalism to colorful livable cozy places!
Being a Dane in my mid forties, the fabrics and furniture give me really strong summer in the Nordics, visiting the family summer cabin and walking to the beach in my childhood - the patterns and colours were so cringe to me as a teen, but by now it's all just nostalgia. None of this will ever make it into my home, not in a million years, but I could absolutely appreciate visiting someone else and and enjoying the happy vibes and the lack of mildew funk that is otherwise stuck in my memory and forever associated with yellow and orange flower patterns for me because, well, damp summer cabins in the Nordics 😅😅 What a fun video!
Wait a minute! I’m 78 and I can get out of that gorgeous yellow chair. Believe it or not. Tried it last week. I adore the return of color! The wonderful orange-red Ekero chair is my favorite IKEA chair… And yes, by the way, anyone can get out of it!
As a knitter I LOVE that throw! The color and pattern is very on trend and it’s so easy to add a little something fun without risking it with a large piece.
I'm a huge fan of colour and texture. Imight not be to everyone's taste but I love that colour is making a comeback especially now that I'm getting my own place. Not only do I still keep the neutral large pieces but I can now add small pops of colour for decoration
You should decorate according to your own taste and style. If you love red, use some red. We’re not chained to what HGTV or some decorator says to use. It‘s your place and your choice. Period.
I wish I could take a pic and post it here. My Gen Z son loves the 70’s look. Like psychedelic 70’s. Orange, yellow, green & brown. Including an alcove with swirling trippy mod wallpaper. Yes they do love it. But as a Gen X I do love it too, for him, in his room.
Convince your son to watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime from 1979, it has lots of psychedelic imagery as a consequence of being made in the 70's.
I (33) love this new Ikea line and the newly remanufactured items. Maybe not all at once, but individually as accents, these are fun! Me from 10 years ago when I was trying to find interesting accents at a reasonable price is so happy!
Trends are driven by money remember. People will buy these and hate them soon when the next trend arrives. I am 50 and remember when IKEA arrived in the UK I loved it! . My house has been through several interior design incarnations and I have had fun doing many trends and regretted it - I did Laura Ashley once ha. I like different looks from English Cottage Eclectic to Japanese Minimalism. However what I can live with and suits my lifestyle is altogether different. I have settled on quality classic design pieces which I love and are timeless, a white wall and neutral accent colours. A bit like your place. find them peaceful and I feel at home finally with my design taste. Love the channel
I always thought my grandmother had a lovely house. Even the giant mural she painted of leopards on the wall over her organ. It was a pop of whimsy in a fairly traditional room design. She did a couple wild things and the rest was very classic. It really worked.
"I'm just as delightful over there" and "it's really a cheese grater for your bum" and "highlighter yellow" love you, Nick! I second the motion in the comments to never bring back harvest gold, burnt orange, and avocado.
I have avocado green 1970s Mikasa dinnerware (Duplex by Ben Seibel) and it is the best thing ever. I loved Ikea's bold Marimekko like patterns for duvet covers in the 80s -- if they bring those back I'll be thrilled.
I love harvest gold and burnt orange, but I grew up with them in my parents old house. All the common rooms were really light and airy so it felt very warm and inviting. They also had a lot of contemporary/modernist furniture so it didn't feel all closed in like some other spaces with those colors did at the time. Then the 90's happened and my mom went all in on country blue, golden oak and geese when we moved out of the city.
Well, I had FUN watching this one! Flashbacks to my bedroom in 1968 lots of orange (*love that flower power pillow,IKEA!).. then hop forward to my bedspread quilt married in 1973..I was big into yellow! Somehow tho we blended lots of plants. Does anyone remember the natural woods look with ferns and hanging plants ( now the boho hangers) I'm not offended like lots of commenters seem to be about these colors! Live long enough to see them come back twice lol Great memories and none of that is my color today,(*so not me now) but I keep up on trends for my grand kids and I love seeing things come back in style! My house is not "bright", but my sunny thoughts of this video are 😂 Thanks, Nick! So much fun watching!👍🏻
Omg… The lavender pitcher… I went to IKEA this weekend and I was so enamoured with that thing that I kept thinking about it for the rest of the day… I was hypnotized by that colour. I may have to go back there and buy it.
That triple cone shade lamp design is from the popular mid-century garden lamp. Any basic geometry shapes like used in the art of Bauhaus has a classic feel that really never goes out of style.... which i think Ikea uses in their design DNA for revolving products.
Nick! PLEASE make a video on how to style open shelving. Also, we love a long video! Would love to see more vids like this one. I could hear you talk for hours and hours, I swear ❤
@@missmayflower I’ve binge watched all of his videos. He says small amounts of open shelving are okay. But I want to know how to style that small amount of it 😭
The windchime piece is probably a reflection of kinetic artwork. In the similar vibe with alexander calder’a work. Considering the retro pieces and vibes.
Most people play safe with whites and neutrals yet forget that those form great background colours, a foil for wonderful expressions of colour. Neutrals are easier to sell to a wider audience, so it will be interesting to see if this trend lasts because people get tired of intense colour and pattern very quickly.
I don't get what so appealing about that lamp. I've noticed quite a few people on Reddit obsessing over it. It's just looks like a donut or a life .ring
I had a great belly laugh over “she ain’t gettin’ out if it”😂😂😂 I’m 63 and not a grandma yet - but I, for a fact, would probably struggle with that one (even though I’m only 5’1” tall!)
Listening to foreign speaking people miss pronounce ikea names is a national sport here in Sweden. Shout out to all that clicked just for that thing alone. So no don't ever change. 😊 It's too much fun.
When I see makeovers on HGTV I see: white, white, white, a little wood, wicker. The same kitchen counter white with a little gray lines and perhaps waterfall. Over, and over and over. I probably would not purchase these items, but at least it has character.
i do like that burnt orange storage metal table and the orange donut light! I have been a fan of burnt orange and red orange colors. I actually mix a deep burgundy with burnt orange and cream in my living room and I just love those colors together. When I was kid growing up, we didn’t have orange .. what we had was baby blue and avocado green and pink, along with panel wood walls
I'm old and I get a little bit offended when people throw a bunch of colors together that just don't go together and then they say it's retro or Boho. No, we actually had pretty good taste most of the time. It seems a lot of junk that was indestructible ended up in thrift shops. The stuff isn't messed up because nobody ever used it.
@@lisabrightly Same. The 80s style was horrid. It was nothing like in the movies or stores or all the things that survived till today. It was brown, dark brown or black wood, "ethnic" patterns, purple, ruby... urgh
It’s funny that people complain about the Swedish pronunciation but my boyfriend who was born in Sweden and speaks Swedish fluently said that some of the product names aren’t even real Swedish words💀
Swedish person here: some of them can be in norweigan or danish (mayyyybe some in finnish), but all are real words. However, some of them are pretty obscure words that aren't really used in daily language, so he might just not have heard them before haha
I got a bit of a chuckle out of this vlog, I lived through all of those decades and all I can say is ewww. I did buy an actual teak veneer table and chairs from IKEA in 1973, that was a very nice piece. That orange colour always reminds me of the orange shag rugs of the era and a friend actually put it up the wall in his bathroom. I did get a laugh out of the April fools vlog that mentioned that. When you live in an old farm house with many critters, two mechanics and not much money, comfort and practical is the trend.
Back in 1965 I baby sat for a family of three rambunctious boys. One evening (while the boys were arm wrestling in their mutual bathroom over which one could brush his teeth first), I needed a toilet trip of my own. I decided my only option was to use the master bathroom. To access that toilet area, I had to walk through the master bedroom, which I hadn’t yet seen. The wall to wall carpet in the bedroom was a shag of long fibers, some turquoise blue, others chartreuse green. That color scheme and carpet type were not unusual for the era. What traumatized me was that this carpeting was not only wall to wall, it was ceiling to ceiling. The carpet covered the floor and ran up all four walls, ending at the intersections with the ceiling. I felt liked I’d been swallowed by a sea monster from a Peter Max poster. I decided that I didn’t want to see what decorating nightmare awaited in the master bathroom. I fled into the hallway and waited for my turn in the boys’ bathroom. Messy as it was, I felt much safer there.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed to not get a description of that master bath! I knew of the trend to completely carpet every surface but have only seen it applied to panel vans, where it made some sense in case you bounced into the ceiling!
Cheese grater: my mom has had an OG one on her balcony for most of my life and with a thin cushion, it's super comfy. The ergonomics and size are just right.😊
I have one as well (I call it my shopping trolley chair 😂) and really like it! I drape a faux sheepskin over the entire chair, and add a thin pillow on the back - perfect!
ooo that burnt orange side table I can see going real nice with wood tones and outdoor spaces. Like with the corugated pattern merging with farm styles
I had those colors in my bedroom. I sewed curtains made from sheets. A shag rug, a bean bag chair and a Stereo turntable for my 16th birthday. I paid for everything else, because I worked after school. Does anyone remember the 20s resurgence when The Great Gatsby movie of the 70s came out, let’s bring that back.
nostalgia, love it, love color, it cheers me up when i look at it. The white look was way to serious, and said to me, "don't have fun, we can't make a mess."
These Genz’s are nesting with their partners and are decorating on a budget either thrift of affordable vintage-ish things. My son is that guy: the mustache, the nail polish and vintage obsession. Spot on IKEA!

I actually had a red metal bar cart in the mid 80s when I was in my early 20s. It wasn't Ikea, but it was from Europe. It had two glass shelves painted with a 1 inch, thinly painted gloss black grid on them, and it had black casters. I really loved that cart as a young person.
You are definitely a delight, Nick. Thanks for making my day once again. I love how many times you say you don't like something when you don't like something.
@@yourconnection9303 I think they mentioned it because Nick was criticizing the metal clock in the video for not being functional and just being a decoration price, so they were just teasing him for having a non-functional clock. Nick is sassy, he can take some sass back 😆
I married in the mid seventies and I had a very dark brown wall in my sitting room and a terracotta painted, feature wall in my bedroom. Dark brown sheets and towels and a sofa, all from Habitat. It looked fine with off -white walls and oatmeal Berber wool carpets and some bright cushions rugs etc. I wasn’t into avocado or brown bathrooms suites though.
So THAT'S why your clock is always at 12:18! I had thought either you were very prompt with your video start times... until the hands never moved, or was that a still shot background. I guess if it's actually concrete it would be a challenge to remove & replace the battery😊. Love your commentary, so fun
That mobil reminds me of my favorite film, Auntie Mame. As an aunt she's my inspiration. I never abandoned color. My kitchen table is red formica from the fifties. I collect vintage swung glass in all colors. I am so happy to see the color! I thrift flipped Merry Mushrooms. It was listed for five minutes and already had a buyer. The kids love the 70s style.
I have a small “ugly lamp” collection. The lamps here would fit right in! I am a 60s-70’s kid and burnt orange was our jam! We moved house around 1968. My seven siblings and I were thrilled that our new home had burnt orange and yellow shag carpet!
the floral fabric is almost exactly like a wallpaper my mom did an entire wall of our (60's ranch house) bathroom -- except it had lime, orange and yellow flowers! Ah nostalgia.
I’m a Millennial and just bought the Tesammans table lamp, which took a lot of effort because it’s sold out all the time everywhere here in Germany.😅 Not quite my usual style, but I think it’s going to be just the right kind of thing to break up the look a bit in the living room and I think it’s actually going to fit quite well with my other lamps (one is the original Gräshoppa floor lamp). We’ll see when I actually get it.
I’m in the states and I’m already seeing that lamp on resale sites like poshmark and eBay for over $100 😒 The same thing happened with the orange donut lamp, it was sold out everywhere but there were tons of them listed on other sites for 4x the price. So annoying! Glad you were able to get one!! :)
@@AmandaBabyyyyy I hate when that happens! Just leave the stuff to people buying it for themselves… I had a friend of mine who is living in a different city pick one up for me, because it was still available there. I’ll take it back with me when I visit her next month.
This chair was the one “new” IKEA item I’d like to buy. But I can’t handle green or black. That green makes me think St. Patrick’s Day, or maybe bile. The black is actually nice but would show lint too easily. If the color choices ever expand, I’d be interested.
I was a teenager in the 70’s and this certainly was a trip down memory lane. My sister’s room was bright green and “highlighter” yellow. Glossy vinyl wallpaper with large yellow green and white flowers and white dresser with yellow drawer fronts. Don't forget the nostalgia of those who were kids in the 70s! Those "kids" are now in their 50s, and some of IKEA's richest consumers.
I was a 70s kid and this stuff doesn't take me back at all. It misses the mark for me.
I dont think that people arround 50 are really purchasing furniture in IKEA
@@daniellaronero3139 Everybody in my city--LA--purchases furniture at IKEA. Maybe not all their furniture. But some of it.
@@daniellaronero3139 Not necessarily furniture, but decor.
Closer to mid 60 - 70 yrs old.
I'm a Gen X and grew up in the 70s; those colors are an abomination.
I do love Shaker style and Arts and Crafts style of furniture.
Mom did have some harvest gold small appliances, so there’s my issue with that color. lol
the reference to the clock in your background is an awesome easter egg!
I wish he would move the clock hands just to see if anyone would notice!
YES I was hoping someone else noticed!!! 😂
It’s hilarious
I am 25 & I have the black version of Dyvlinge chair. They were sold out of the green one, but I am very happy I got the black colour. I have several pieces from this collection since I recently moved out of my parents house & into a 24 square feet studio apartment this year. I filled this tiny space with bright colour & it makes me so happy!
I’m 19 and I am loving this so much, 70’s and late 60’s space age is SO GOOD I’m so excited
Literally, the BEST

Hunter green and burgundy 😢
I have nothing against colour and blue, orange and yellow are all happy, beachy things, but a lot of this stuff is reminding me of primary school. I'm in my 50s so was a kid in the 70s and I swear they used to store books on metal carts like that in my classroom.
Truth!!! 😂😂😂😂
Primary school was the first thing That came to me too!
There was 4 colors in the 70's period. Avacado, Brown, Gold, and Orange.
Pretty much describes vomit.
I just realized that my living room consists of brown, gold, (burnt) orange and dark green. 😅
@@kepckatherinec805 Orange? No.
True. We just replaced our 70s-era stove (brown, analog flip-tile clock).

Being a Dane in my mid forties, the fabrics and furniture give me really strong summer in the Nordics, visiting the family summer cabin and walking to the beach in my childhood - the patterns and colours were so cringe to me as a teen, but by now it's all just nostalgia.
None of this will ever make it into my home, not in a million years, but I could absolutely appreciate visiting someone else and and enjoying the happy vibes and the lack of mildew funk that is otherwise stuck in my memory and forever associated with yellow and orange flower patterns for me because, well, damp summer cabins in the Nordics 😅😅

"Is this an animal print? I mean what poor animal has this? " I'm still laughing. Love you Nick
I love this! This is the first time I've wished there was an IKEA in New Zealand. Give me all the colour! 😍
As a knitter I LOVE that throw! The color and pattern is very on trend and it’s so easy to add a little something fun without risking it with a large piece.
My thoughts too! As someone who loves all yarn crafts and textiles, the colour combinations and patterns are gorgeous!
I'm a huge fan of colour and texture. Imight not be to everyone's taste but I love that colour is making a comeback especially now that I'm getting my own place.

Don't let him have a disc ball or you will have a mental breakdown.
Convince your son to watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime from 1979, it has lots of psychedelic imagery as a consequence of being made in the 70's.

😂 “I love that for you.”
I was a 60s teenager so I get the psychedelic look, but as a Boomer grandma, yes, it belongs confined to his room.
I (33) love this new Ikea line and the newly remanufactured items. Maybe not all at once, but individually as accents, these are fun! Me from 10 years ago when I was trying to find interesting accents at a reasonable price is so happy!
Burnt Orange has always been a favorite of this 70s child. Nice and warm.
OMG Laura Ashley ... didn't long last till I hated it.
As a 70s kid, I can honestly say my grandmother pulled it off beautifully. Nothing was overdone regardless of color or design.
I literally chuckled when he said all of those 🤭
The avocado green was the only home decor color I actually liked from the late 70's. I can't stand anything burnt orange to this day though.

Those pastel stools and crates match the Sharp boombox I got for Christmas in 1986. Loved that palette then, love it now.
As a Swede, I find it so funny and endearing to hear your version of the IKEA names!

I love it as well.
Omg… The lavender pitcher… I went to IKEA this weekend and I was so enamoured with that thing that I kept thinking about it for the rest of the day… I was hypnotized by that colour. I may have to go back there and buy it.
Do it!
That triple cone shade lamp design is from the popular mid-century garden lamp. Any basic geometry shapes like used in the art of Bauhaus has a classic feel that really never goes out of style.... which i think Ikea uses in their design DNA for revolving products.

@@kepckatherinec805this was for sound-proofing, much like the van reference
Cheese grater: my mom has had an OG one on her balcony for most of my life and with a thin cushion, it's super comfy. The ergonomics and size are just right.😊

ooo that burnt orange side table I can see going real nice with wood tones and outdoor spaces.
Exactly. For those of us actually alive back then, we loved "antiques" with real wood and things made with great craftsmanship.
Oh there's definitely a 20s resurgence... But I don't like 20s furniture I like 20s clothes and that came back in the 10s and went away again
