How To: Clean and Seal a Motorcycle Gas Tank | Yamaha RX50 Restoration

  • Опубліковано 23 лип 2019
  • In this video, I show the process of cleaning and sealing my rusty 1983 Yamaha RX50 Gas tank using muriatic acid and por-15 gas tank sealer! This is a VERY important process, it will save your carburetors from getting clogged up, and could prevent your gas tank from leaking, gas leaks are very bad!
POR-15 Gas tank sealer is bad ass! It can seal pinholes, and even cracks!
Watch me restore a much worse gas tank: • Restoring a Rusty Gas ...

Buy muriatic acid here: urlzs.com/AAHV7 (it's cheaper in stores)

Recommendation : place some glad wrap ( plastic food wrap ) or rubber glove; under the gas cap to protect it from the sealer. There is a really tiny breather hole that you DON"T want to block !!!!! . :)

Just a tip for you, never EVER shake any sort of coating that you need to use to create an air-tight bond. Your going to create very small air bubbles in the coating and will therefor make it porous causing rust to return. Stir it instead.

I have 1974 Kawasaki Z1. It has been in the carage for 3-4 years now, and I used Annitrol to get rid off the rust. Then "washed" the tank with gas. Then filled the tank and put in the gas preservative, because bike will be without using in the carage. So.... 10min from "gas washing" tank was looking so rusted again. Before that it was beautiful and without any rust anymore. I have been thinkig about buying the kit where come the cleaning and the sealing materials. This is so frustrating that my work for the bike is useless. I did that at autumn and maybe at spring or summer I will buy the kit.

Muratic acid wont cut thru varnished gas. You might get better results using a fast flash lacquer thinner and let it sit for a few days. Empty then fill the tank up with vinegar. Then rinse with thinner again. After that and you know that your tank is really dry you can treat cote. Also I have a long air nozzle that I put in the tank to see if any stubborn residue is hanging on in the corners.
