Man I just turned 18 and I’m enjoying this band as if I was 18 back in the late 60’s. The magic in the air must have really been something else if people could come together and create music that was so smooth, jazzy, bluesy, and psychedelic. RIP Jim and Ray.
I believe they wrote about timeless subjects without throwing in to many "Groovy" terms. I was 13 when I saw them in 68. my mom worked at the venue or there was no way she'd let me go. My son is 28 and he enjoys the doors a lot more now than he did as a kid. He went through the phase of the bling bling with the gold the fancy cars and all of that and now he's back to being a normal man. You're on the right track I'm saying.
I wasn't on the west coast but i got to see the DOORS 5 times in my life. The music changed me forever. Tears running down my cheeks remembering. It was a great time in history.

Cloud Dweller I’m 54 and wish I was there with you. Oh well, we all live out our time. Thanks to people recording the bands and taking photos and films along with the stories and interviews we can still visit that feeling. Light my Fire is the first song I remember hearing in my life. I was 3 years old and my father had it playing on the radio of his 67 firebird. It was night and I remember the glow of the radio dial. He also bought the first album.

John Densmore is one of the most underrated drummers of the 60's. I'm always amazed how he was able to keep the band on course when Jim was off on some incredible and unexpected tangent reciting poetry or something.
@@curbozer5006 Yes, I’ve noticed during interviews that, for every nice/good thing Densmore has to admit about Morrison, he always manages to insert a dig at Jim, who can’t counter. I think he just can’t help himself, but it is obvious if you look.
Yeah can't imagine being a drummer for what I would say the most unpredictable front man in rock history. If nothing else Densmore has to be credited with being the most patient drummer in rock history. The chemistry between the two is phenomenal... certainly not down playing the chemistry of the band as a whole.
The Doors were truly ahead of the curve. So much so that their music is timeless and still relevant even 50 years later. Truly one of my favorite bands of all time.
I think we are really fortunate that so many Doors performances were recorded so we can enjoy them after almost 50 years. That's one thing that unites us here, this great music.
Hey Airbaja, have you heard about the New Orleans gig, with Riders on the Storm done live on stage? The tape is in a safe deposit box somewhere. It's the only copy. It's their final live show with JM singing.
They can't release it if they don't have it. What do you think about running an online crowd funding project to get the tape, then get it to the producers like Jeff Jampol and let Bruce Botnick get his hands on it.

I'm younger...but, it had to have been SO freaking cool to grow-up in the 1950's, 60's and 70's!!! It seemed to be a magical time in this country!!! My generation now listens to complete SHIT hip-hop music and stares at their cell phones 24/7!!

Ray always had great stories about his experiences with the Doors, and he liked to share them. I'm too young to have ever seen the Doors, but I got to see Ray and Robbie with the Doors of the 21st Century in Pomona in 2004, along with Ian Astbury, who is one of my favorite singers. What a great show. Unforgettable. The Doors are timeless, and their music still sounds great today.

This version of light my fire was recorded at the aquarius theater in 1969 the entire show was recorded for absolutely live and the whole show was released several years ago . This recording is from 1969 the doors had not played the whiskey since 1966. There are no recordings of the doors from the whiskey
I remember as a kid, we were hanging out front of the whiskey and listening to Jim Morrison singing. It was amazing. We tried to get in but they wouldn’t let us get past the doors. We used to walk the strip almost every week. And one of our stops was the whiskey. I am 70 now, it seems so long ago. Was good times back then

That is partially true. The Doors never had a bass player for live performances. In the studio however it was determined that Manzarek's Fender Rhodes bass keyboard wasn't beefy enough for recording so they had a number of session bass players over the years. Larry Knechtel was on the Doors record, Doug Lubahn did the Strange Days and Waiting for the Sun sessions. Kerry Magness did a couple of songs on WFTS, Harvey Brooks did Soft Parade, Ray Neopolitan did Morrison Hotel tracks and Jerry Scheff did the LA Woman bass parts. According to Manzarek he and Krieger directed the session players on what and how to play each song explaining why the live bass parts sound like the studio recordings.
WRONG, Grant. Manzarek said that he only directed Scheff on what to play for Riders On The Storm. Every other track was Scheff's work, besides L'America.

I was born in 1962. God saved my life by not letting me be legal (or illegal) age when The Doors hit the music scene. I would have followed them anywhere. I hope Jim found peace on the other side. 2007 I was in LA w my girl... walking into the Whiskey I could smell the thick vibes...feel the ghosts....hear the music in the air... not the music they were playing on the system... but the music that changed my life... the dreams made and broken.... The Doors... THE DOORS BABY!!!! My girl ended up puking outside on the stairs ...was a wonderful experience...
What can I say. As a kid in high school obsessed with the band and Jim Morrison in particular, I thought I saw and heard EVERYTHING, whether it was bootlegs, demos, outtakes, rare tracks, live stuff, video, pictures, etc. I can honestly say that about 90% of what this short piece consisted of were things I hadn't seen or heard. the doors are truly legendary, killer drums wicked guitar, phenomenal keyboards. excellent songs deadly songwriter's and imaginary lyric's awesome singing. the best of the best.
I loved Ray like an uncle or grandfather , that told the stories of his life with such detail. I would chew some LSD and sit there just listening to Ray talk. Jim was the poet, but Ray was a gifted story teller --- and the best damn keyboard player ever.
The equipment of the era produced far better recordings than today's sterile digital crap. This was recorded on a professional multitrack 8 track recorded and the aquarius theater had great sound. Universal mind soul kitchen and celebration of the lizard from absolutley live were recorded at the same show as this version of light my fire
Once again we are reminded that The Doors were never just about Morrison. Without Robbie, John, and Ray, it never would have worked. They were a BAND, four equal parts. You watch and listen to the live stuff, and they are so in sync. No one has ever sounded like them.
In 1966, I'd graduated, got a job, got my own rented side of a duplex with a yard, became a hippie, and listened to San Jose's best FM radio. Nearly half of their playlist was becoming the 'San Francisco Sound', which inspired more locals to form bands. All Rock-and-Roll on FM was great in those sunny California days! Then, I heard this strange, wonderful song 'Light My Fire'; they played the *long* version! I was entranced! After that, Doors' songs were charting, and their music was almost hypnotic. Perhaps that Saturday morning bowl of Acapulco Gold helped! All I had to do was light my fire!
True to their music the ‘Doors’ of perception seen through the mind’s eye of Jim the poet Morrison. The music resonates as the words create images of our unrealised reality. Just loving the music.
The doors were a good decade before my time. As I broadened my music knowledge I've really come to like their music. Very unique many, many good songs.

The last bit with Ray was just magic! Great story telling. What a life, to have been part of that mad, mystical and ultimately melancholy journey that was The Doors.
I was so damn emotional over cereal watching this alone..in tears..Ray.what a joyful soul...this 3 guys following whatever was unfolding unpredictably from their leader. Just imagine Ray, Robby and Densmore just carefully listening and going with the flow of the moment that sustained 50 years later
I grew up 15 minutes from West Hollywood and saw The Doors twice when I was a teenager. I visited West Hollywood last year with my daughter who lives in California and we drove by The Whiskey (It was raining cats and dogs that night - the day of the Malibu mudslide, which we drove through earlier in the day) and also had dinner at Barney's Beanery. It's pretty much a dive but the food is actually pretty good for bar food and the history of Barney's (this is the original Barney's) is pretty interesting. I ate their original chili, which I was told was one of Jim's favorite meals there, while sitting on Jim's old barstool. There was an elderly man who sat to my left at the bar and he told me that he had been coming to Barney's for over 50 years and even had a few conversations with Jim there. He told me that Jim was "a really nice guy when he was sober - a genius!" My daughter loves The Doors also so we went on a "24 hr. Doors Odyssey" before I flew home from L.A. BTW...the LaCienega Motel looks exactly as it did back in the 60's. That is the motel where Jim kept a room for many years as his "hidey hole." He would go there whenever he was on the outs with Pam, ha-ha!
It was an incredible time, wasn't it? So disappointed I didn't get to go inside of the Whiskey when we were there. It was a deluge and probably the first time it had rained like that in months! I lived in that area for years growing up and don't remember it ever raining that hard. It was cool though to duck into Barney's for a late night "Doors Odyssey" dinner and get the feel of the place. It's essentially unchanged since The Doors frequented it and, from what I've read, they ate there nearly every day they were in L.A. Jim apparently really loved their food, it was cheap, plentiful and good, and it was a short walk to the LaCienega Motel. The bartender gave me a menu to keep as a souvenir. My daughter wasn't that hungry and ordered the S'mores, which was lit with birthday candles. Essentially, as you probably are aware, it's sort of a dive in a dicey area but it was clean, the food was really good for bar food, and you can imagine The Doors hanging out there as the place definitely has an edge to it. I'm sure there were some drunken brawls there back in the day. Janis Joplin apparently landed a solid punch in Jim's face (!!) Being Jim, he went a little too far teasing her and she let him have it. Next time in L.A., definitely going back to the Whiskey. Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative.

Anybody know where this version was recorded? I have everything I can lay my hands on and I don't have this version. Sounds early, might be wrong but rays organ playing doesn't seem ironed out yet. Still milliontimes better than ANYTHING we got NOW!

I’ve been listening to alot of 60’s- 70’s music again as I grew up in that time - just a few years too early though to be able to experience the doors or other bands at a concert though. But Jim’s voice and the band’s music really stands above most of the others listening to the music of that time now. And it is definitely levels above the music of today. I hope we have time travel before I die because I will book the first ticket to The Doors.
grew up near the whiskey. My mom took me there twice to see the doors live. I was 12. Remember it well. Now I watch Dave Brock and it's like going back in time. Wild Child is the incarnation of the Doors.
I saw them in West Covina Jan. 20-21st, 1968, I was 13, my Mom worked at the venue, made a lasting impression. You have a Kool Mom fersure! I saw Dave perform with Ray and Robbie, he did a better job than the other front men they used. I've seen Wild Child twice at the OC Fair, love hearing those tunes live, thanks for the comment 'DP'.
This had to be one of the best live Doors performances I've ever heard! It sounds like they invented hardcore punk/speed metal during the "Light My Fire" organ/guitar solo instrumental section!
Nice "experimental stretch"??? I assume you're referring to Robbie's improvisational guitar solo. It always gets me, too. If you've never heard it before, go to the album for the long version. Back in the day, the record company (Electra) cut the original version down so it would fit the format for radio and therefore get air play. It's all we had back then--radio, eight track players, Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights and Rolling Stone magazine. No internet or live streaming or satellite tv or youtube and itunes, etc. Whole different (and I think preferable) world. Call me old fashioned....
It was cool when on occasion they'd play the long version. They did that once when I was working in the cellar of a restaurant and business was slow so we got to hear the whole thing. The windows and doors were open because it was a warm summer night. There was something magical about it.
What an era it was! So much good, no, great music. I'm old now, nearly 71 years old and played guitar since 12 years old, but those memories of the music are treasured. It was also a time of turmoil as well. The War, Manson, and the loss of innocence.

Gabby Gustafsen My daughter was born in 1973&she is married to a much older man who lived around that part of California at that time.Before the DOORS made it they even took high school prom /&dance gigs.They played several times at his high school.He met All the DOORS including Jim several of those times.He said they were magic but best enjoy them in the first 5 songs of any of those sets cause by then Jim would be so very shit faced &out of control they would have to be told the show was over &the cops/authority would shut it down.The DOORS especially &mostly Jim were OUTRAGEOUS &OUT OF CONTROL.Yet the kids were devoted &loved them so much the school would always hire them to comeback next time there was a big dance or the Prom coming up.All would be forgiven until of course it was repeated yet again.LOL!Yes my son-in - law was from a very wealthy ,affluent family &went to a very upper class high school .But how many people can say THE DOORS &JIM MORRISON played my PROM ,SPRING DANCEs,&HOMECOMING DANCEs!Only a very few I assure YOU!👍

I have been to Jim's grave in Paris and to the street where he lived but to be able to get across the pond and visit the whisky a go go would a dream come true. The Cavern in Liverpool and the Whisky in California are probably the two most iconic venues in musical history.

I was about 18 at this time I was too young for the Whiskey you had to be 21 to get in. But the Sunset Strip was insane So many clubs with what would be superstar bands and 2-3 bucks cover there will never be a time like that again. This is a great collage I just wish there were more videos of that time to relive.
scottsrush Its not John on all the studio tracks, a secret. Session drummers were used to cut records in the 60’s. You’d be astounded to know how many tracks were actually session drummers, not the bands hack drummer(s).

I saw a great T-shirt a few months ago, it said 'I may be old but at least I've seen all the cool bands'. That surely sums up being between 15-25 when all this great 60's music was made. I have seen many bands from this era but only when they are at the veteran stage, The Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, CSN, Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band. I was born in 1965 but would not have minded being born 20 years earlier. I work with a woman who was born in 1950 and she said that you could go out on the town most nights and there would be at least one great band to see. These days you wait ages for tours and then get charged £50-80 for the privilege of doing so.

My family lived in the same neighborhood in Albuquerque for a short time starting in the summer of 1971 before I ever heard that Jim Morrison had any history with Albuquerque.

It saddens me to know that the importance of the strip is going to be unknown to future generations. The Whisky and places like it are where the greatest bands got their start.
I went there two years ago just to stay at the Alta Cienega hotel, Jim's Room 32 for the weekend.... Its surreal, yet so depressing... In the room alone with the lights off. You can feel the presence. truth.
The Whiskey is still there. People can go in and just feel the presence of bands like The Doors, The Birds, etc. That's what I did when I went there. I did the same thing at the Fillmore in San Francisco during the concerts I saw there. I would feel the presence of The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, etc. You can just feel the history of these places, and it's so cool! :)
Morrison was one of a find. He was high on LSD, yet able to recall the lyrics he had not used before for the End. This is one of the best "Light My Fire" and I had not heard it before. Thanks for posting.

I miss identified it as recorded at the Whisky, when it was the Aquarius Theatre down the street. I saw the Doors live in 68, changed me forever, so, cobbling this piece together from many sources was truly a labor of love, rock on! Incredible video! You could drive all over the USA back in those days and see amazing live house bands everywhere, but there was not enough room at the top for all of them to have their day in the sun nationally and internationally. It was a great time to be alive.
Back in '72 I was in the Marines stationed in Santa Ana. A friend and I would hitchhike to LA, visit the strip, sleep in the Greyhound Bus Station and thumb back the next day. At 17, too young to get into the Whiskey, but good times never-the-less!!

Why does Ray's keyboard sound like summer to me ? It just makes me think of summertime... I hear that organ & I get images of heat rising from a roadway from a distance. The same way that Ian Anderson's flute sounds like fall/autumn to me.... Images of colorful leaves fluttering & spinning to the ground.

My Morrison encounter: I'm 13 years old in 1966, at the San Jose Civic Center, hanging out near the freight door adjacent to the backstage exit door, Morrison sees me and waves me up to where he was standing, I pointed to myself and mouthed "who me?" He says, "yeah you, there's nobody else there, c'mere kid" I was blown away but I tried to be cool, I walked over nervously and loudly said "wow, hi Jim" I guess I seemed a bit too excited because he said, "why are you hanging out here, what do you hope is going to happen by meeting me?" I was completely, totally at a loss to answer him so I just shrugged and started walking away, he grabs my coat collar, smiles and says, "hey, I might learn something from you, don't leave kid!" I nervously replied "I'm 13, and your Jim Morrison, what can you learn from me?" He said, "yeah, you're probably right, but I feel like talking, he became more friendly and asked "what's your name, what grade are you in, are you a good student?" I replied " I'm Dennis, I'm in 8th grade and I'm just an average student I guess, but I'm a good baseball player." He cracked up and said, "Dennis you probably won't make a life out of playing baseball, you might, it happens but always try to learn everything you can in school, study hard and learn, just try to learn" With that, Jim grabbed my shoulder and led me in through the backstage exit door with him, he smiled and pointed to an empty folding chair and said, "nice talking with you, stay back here and enjoy the show Dennis, we're starting now..... @@davidroberts7282 Agreed, I was an early proponent of their music, Obscured by Clouds and Atom Hearts Mother were mainstays on my record stack. It took them five years to catch on with the record buying mobs. Dark Side of the Moon changed everything. I saw David Gilmore here in L.A. a few years back, what a show..Syd was a driving force in the band, but his issues took him to the edge, shine on you crazy diamond.
How true that the Doors had the music to start expanding people's minds! I know! I smoked my first joint and listened to the Doors. That was it folks! Nothing was the same anymore. But if you play your cards right in life. You no longer need it. Because your life becomes that joint. I have a amazing life and doing some very cool things in the world. Good luck on your journey! ‘65... I’m 16 with my fake ID, and seeing all the bands on the strip. Went to the Whiskey, to see Arthur Lee and LOVE. They were the house band, before the Doors, as I poorly recall. Then The Doors, were the new house band, because I think LOVE signed a recording contract. The Doors, were like nothing ever seen or heard. The Lizard King, had arrived. What a scene... I think I still get bronchitis, from all the smoke filled clubs, in the day! Worth it! Thx, for the memories, AirBaja!
Whoa, my mind is blown. Thanks for the great memories. I have been inside here many times and got to see Ray Mansarek and met Danny Sugarman. Many great nights were spent on the strip back in the 80's. My final night became July 3rd 93 when i saw Arthur Lee @ Love with the Doors tribute band Wild Child. Those were some far out times. However like most all good things, it all came crashing down on Jan 17 1994 when i was in the biggest quake in Southern California and it threw me over here to a different planet. Thank God i have the music and memories.

Tia Mia All that needs to happen is I get 600 items sold, my other half and I become more than just a couple sharing an apartment and the things in DC doesn't try to screw over us of the 90 percent. Was put on disability four months ago and am existing in the biggest challenge physically alone. Is fun trying to exist on half an income. This is great. I just visited the Whiskey for the first time, and I can tell you the magic is still there. The place is actually smaller than you might think, compared to the legendary images we've scene for decades. It looks like they haven't changed it or commercialized it in too many ways since those days--they certainly could, considering its historical significance. up and coming bands still play there, like always. I went out to the back, where in the doors movie they kicked them out of the club and Morrison started climbing the fence as paul rothchild says "come down from there, Jim, let's go make an album". I smoked part of my joint right there, then went in an enjoyed that night's show. had a great time! this mini-documentary is very well done! it's interspersed with some choice historical images, of the place where all the stars went to mingle, dance and "get it on!"
The closest I ever came to LA was Vegas in 2010,but I was 15 in 1966 and I loved the music and still do. I would have loved to be even just a fly on the wall at the Whiskey in those days.

Since then Melinda, I've learned, and you reinforce this notion, that he will live forever, through his words, As Jim said, "better to be a word man than a bird man." 1996? I was 18, and TOTALLY obsessed with The Doors. All I listened to for months. This is after years of listening to Nirvana, Mudhoney, James Addiction, Pjam, hip hop, Toadies, Tool, ect...
Great time for great music. I am 70 and remember some of the bands and solo musicians I was lucky to hear in relatively small venues for very little money.

Man I just turned 18 and I’m enjoying this band as if I was 18 back in the late 60’s. The magic in the air must have really been something else if people could come together and create music that was so smooth, jazzy, bluesy, and psychedelic. RIP Jim and Ray.
I believe they wrote about timeless subjects without throwing in to many "Groovy" terms. I was 13 when I saw them in 68. my mom worked at the venue or there was no way she'd let me go. I was born in 1958, too young to see them play live but I grew up with their music and will forever rememeber those great times and highs.
I wasn't on the west coast but i got to see the DOORS 5 times in my life. The music changed me forever. Tears running down my cheeks remembering. It was a great time in history.

Although I am only 65, but I was a teenager in Canoga Park back then and thought those days would never end. Man was I ever wrong.

I was 3 years old and my father had it playing on the radio of his 67 firebird.
It was night and I remember the glow of the radio dial. He also bought the first album.
Watching Van Morrison and Jim Morrison sing together would have been absolutely amazing I wish someone had filmed it.

John Densmore is one of the most underrated drummers of the 60's. I'm always amazed how he was able to keep the band on course when Jim was off on some incredible and unexpected tangent reciting poetry or something.
Word, Densmore was a genius on those drums. Rock n roll, latin jazz, blues, boogie, tribal beat.. he mastered and mixed it all, so tight.
Densmore had some trouble during that time frame...his wife messed around with Morrison!..he is still bitter about that...who wouldn't be?

Yes, I’ve noticed during interviews that, for every nice/good thing Densmore has to admit about Morrison, he always manages to insert a dig at Jim, who can’t counter. I think he just can’t help himself, but it is obvious if you look.

Yeah can't imagine being a drummer for what I would say the most unpredictable front man in rock history. If nothing else Densmore has to be credited with being the most patient drummer in rock history. The chemistry between the two is phenomenal... certainly not down playing the chemistry of the band as a whole.
The Doors were truly ahead of the curve. So much so that their music is timeless and still relevant even 50 years later. Truly one of my favorite bands of all time.

Ray always had great stories about his experiences with the Doors, and he liked to share them. I'm too young to have ever seen the Doors, but I got to see Ray and Robbie with the Doors of the 21st Century in Pomona in 2004, along with Ian Astbury, who is one of my favorite singers. What a great show. Unforgettable. The Doors are timeless, and their music still sounds great today.
I saw them in many versions, the 68 show was the best, however, those shows with three or four other voices rocked too! Thanks for sharing Bongo Dave...

This version of light my fire was recorded at the aquarius theater in 1969 the entire show was recorded for absolutely live and the whole show was released several years ago . This recording is from 1969 the doors had not played the whiskey since 1966. There are no recordings of the doors from the whiskey
I remember as a kid, we were hanging out front of the whiskey and listening to Jim Morrison singing. It was amazing. We tried to get in but they wouldn’t let us get past the doors. We used to walk the strip almost every week. And one of our stops was the whiskey. I am 70 now, it seems so long ago. Was good times back then

Don Grantham Great comment Don, he did win the musician of the year award in 68, for pulling double duty, he was a genius, as Robbie and John, a major Power Trio...
That is partially true. The Doors never had a bass player for live performances. In the studio however it was determined that Manzarek's Fender Rhodes bass keyboard wasn't beefy enough for recording so they had a number of session bass players over the years. Larry Knechtel was on the Doors record, Doug Lubahn did the Strange Days and Waiting for the Sun sessions. Kerry Magness did a couple of songs on WFTS, Harvey Brooks did Soft Parade, Ray Neopolitan did Morrison Hotel tracks and Jerry Scheff did the LA Woman bass parts. According to Manzarek he and Krieger directed the session players on what and how to play each song explaining why the live bass parts sound like the studio recordings.
WRONG, Grant. Manzarek said that he only directed Scheff on what to play for Riders On The Storm. Every other track was Scheff's work, besides L'America.

I was born in 1962. God saved my life by not letting me be legal (or illegal) age when The Doors hit the music scene. I would have followed them anywhere. I hope Jim found peace on the other side. 2007 I was in LA w my girl... walking into the Whiskey I could smell the thick vibes...feel the ghosts....hear the music in the air... not the music they were playing on the system... but the music that changed my life... the dreams made and broken.... The Doors... THE DOORS BABY!!!! My girl ended up puking outside on the stairs ...was a wonderful experience...
When I stayed in Jim's room last Halloween, it was thick as a brick, the energy remains as our remains and testifies to our existence.
The 60s and 70s truly the greatest decades for music. I am 65 and will never witness this again.

What can I say. As a kid in high school obsessed with the band and Jim Morrison in particular, I thought I saw and heard EVERYTHING, whether it was bootlegs, demos, outtakes, rare tracks, live stuff, video, pictures, etc. I can honestly say that about 90% of what this short piece consisted of were things I hadn't seen or heard. I loved Ray like an uncle or grandfather , that told the stories of his life with such detail. I would chew some LSD and sit there just listening to Ray talk. Jim was the poet, but Ray was a gifted story teller --- and the best damn keyboard player ever.

You need to buy some cds.. Doors live at the Aquarius, first show and second show.. You won't be sorry.
The equipment of the era produced far better recordings than today's sterile digital crap. This was recorded on a professional multitrack 8 track recorded and the aquarius theater had great sound. Universal mind soul kitchen and celebration of the lizard from absolutley live were recorded at the same show as this version of light my fire
For those of us who were around at the time this has literally become part of our DNA.
Once again we are reminded that The Doors were never just about Morrison. Without Robbie, John, and Ray, it never would have worked. They were a BAND, four equal parts. You watch and listen to the live stuff, and they are so in sync. No one has ever sounded like them.
In 1966, I'd graduated, got a job, got my own rented side of a duplex with a yard, became a hippie, and listened to San Jose's best FM radio. Nearly half of their playlist was becoming the 'San Francisco Sound', which inspired more locals to form bands. All Rock-and-Roll on FM was great in those sunny California days! Then, I heard this strange, wonderful song 'Light My Fire'; they played the *long* version! I was entranced! After that, Doors' songs were charting, and their music was almost hypnotic. Perhaps that Saturday morning bowl of Acapulco Gold helped! All I had to do was light my fire!

The Doors are the greatest band to ever play there.
In fact, they put the Whisky a Go Go on the map.
I grew up 15 minutes from West Hollywood and saw The Doors twice when I was a teenager. I visited West Hollywood last year with my daughter who lives in California and we drove by The Whiskey (It was raining cats and dogs that night - the day of the Malibu mudslide, which we drove through earlier in the day) and also had dinner at Barney's Beanery. It's pretty much a dive but the food is actually pretty good for bar food and the history of Barney's (this is the original Barney's) is pretty interesting. I ate their original chili, which I was told was one of Jim's favorite meals there, while sitting on Jim's old barstool. There was an elderly man who sat to my left at the bar and he told me that he had been coming to Barney's for over 50 years and even had a few conversations with Jim there. He told me that Jim was "a really nice guy when he was sober - a genius!" My daughter loves The Doors also so we went on a "24 hr. Doors Odyssey" before I flew home from L.A. BTW...the LaCienega Motel looks exactly as it did back in the 60's. That is the motel where Jim kept a room for many years as his "hidey hole." He would go there whenever he was on the outs with Pam, ha-ha!

It was an incredible time, wasn't it? So disappointed I didn't get to go inside of the Whiskey when we were there. It was a deluge and probably the first time it had rained like that in months! I lived in that area for years growing up and don't remember it ever raining that hard. It was cool though to duck into Barney's for a late night "Doors Odyssey" dinner and get the feel of the place. It's essentially unchanged since The Doors frequented it and, from what I've read, they ate there nearly every day they were in L.A. Jim apparently really loved their food, it was cheap, plentiful and good, and it was a short walk to the LaCienega Motel. The bartender gave me a menu to keep as a souvenir. My daughter wasn't that hungry and ordered the S'mores, which was lit with birthday candles. Essentially, as you probably are aware, it's sort of a dive in a dicey area but it was clean, the food was really good for bar food, and you can imagine The Doors hanging out there as the place definitely has an edge to it. I'm sure there were some drunken brawls there back in the day. Janis Joplin apparently landed a solid punch in Jim's face (!!) Being Jim, he went a little too far teasing her and she let him have it. Next time in L.A., definitely going back to the Whiskey. Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative.
I heard or read ( Tia) in No one here gets out alive that Janis Joplin smashed a bottle of whisky atop Jim's Thick skull at a party at John Davidson's house party?

If I could pick on concert to go back in time to see, I would pick the 2nd set The Doors played when Jim finally finished "The End".
This live version of Light My Fire is so damn good it would've made just as stunning an impact as the studio recording did on The Doors' first album.

Anybody know where this version was recorded? I have everything I can lay my hands on and I don't have this version. Sounds early, might be wrong but rays organ playing doesn't seem ironed out yet. Still milliontimes better than ANYTHING we got NOW!

I’ve been listening to alot of 60’s- 70’s music again as I grew up in that time - just a few years too early though to be able to experience the doors or other bands at a concert though. But Jim’s voice and the band’s music really stands above most of the others listening to the music of that time now. And it is definitely levels above the music of today. I hope we have time travel before I die because I will book the first ticket to The Doors.
grew up near the whiskey. My mom took me there twice to see the doors live. I was 12. Remember it well. Now I watch Dave Brock and it's like going back in time. Wild Child is the incarnation of the Doors.
I saw them in West Covina Jan. 20-21st, 1968, I was 13, my Mom worked at the venue, made a lasting impression. You have a Kool Mom fersure! I saw Dave perform with Ray and Robbie, he did a better job than the other front men they used. I've seen Wild Child twice at the OC Fair, love hearing those tunes live, thanks for the comment 'DP'.

This had to be one of the best live Doors performances I've ever heard! It sounds like they invented hardcore punk/speed metal during the "Light My Fire" organ/guitar solo instrumental section!

Nice "experimental stretch"??? I assume you're referring to Robbie's improvisational guitar solo. It always gets me, too. If you've never heard it before, go to the album for the long version. Back in the day, the record company (Electra) cut the original version down so it would fit the format for radio and therefore get air play. It's all we had back then--radio, eight track players, Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights and Rolling Stone magazine. No internet or live streaming or satellite tv or youtube and itunes, etc. Whole different (and I think preferable) world. Call me old fashioned....
It was cool when on occasion they'd play the long version. They did that once when I was working in the cellar of a restaurant and business was slow so we got to hear the whole thing. The windows and doors were open because it was a warm summer night. There was something magical about it.
This is outstanding version of Light My Fire!! Shows how solid the band was in ways I don't hear as well in the studio recording.
What an era it was! So much good, no, great music. I'm old now, nearly 71 years old and played guitar since 12 years old, but those memories of the music are treasured. It was also a time of turmoil as well. The War, Manson, and the loss of innocence.

Gabby Gustafsen My daughter was born in 1973&she is married to a much older man who lived around that part of California at that time.Before the DOORS made it they even took high school prom /&dance gigs.They played several times at his high school.He met All the DOORS including Jim several of those times.He said they were magic but best enjoy them in the first 5 songs of any of those sets cause by then Jim would be so very shit faced &out of control they would have to be told the show was over &the cops/authority would shut it down.The DOORS especially &mostly Jim were OUTRAGEOUS &OUT OF CONTROL.Yet the kids were devoted &loved them so much the school would always hire them to comeback next time there was a big dance or the Prom coming up.All would be forgiven until of course it was repeated yet again.LOL!Yes my son-in - law was from a very wealthy ,affluent family &went to a very upper class high school .But how many people can say THE DOORS &JIM MORRISON played my PROM ,SPRING DANCEs,&HOMECOMING DANCEs!Only a very few I assure YOU!👍

I have been to Jim's grave in Paris and to the street where he lived but to be able to get across the pond and visit the whisky a go go would a dream come true. The Cavern in Liverpool and the Whisky in California are probably the two most iconic venues in musical history.

I was about 18 at this time I was too young for the Whiskey you had to be 21 to get in. But the Sunset Strip was insane So many clubs with what would be superstar bands and 2-3 bucks cover there will never be a time like that again. This is a great collage I just wish there were more videos of that time to relive.

scottsrush Its not John on all the studio tracks, a secret. Session drummers were used to cut records in the 60’s. You’d be astounded to know how many tracks were actually session drummers, not the bands hack drummer(s).

I saw a great T-shirt a few months ago, it said 'I may be old but at least I've seen all the cool bands'. That surely sums up being between 15-25 when all this great 60's music was made. I have seen many bands from this era but only when they are at the veteran stage, The Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, CSN, Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band. I was born in 1965 but would not have minded being born 20 years earlier. I work with a woman who was born in 1950 and she said that you could go out on the town most nights and there would be at least one great band to see. These days you wait ages for tours and then get charged £50-80 for the privilege of doing so.

My family lived in the same neighborhood in Albuquerque for a short time starting in the summer of 1971 before I ever heard that Jim Morrison had any history with Albuquerque.

It saddens me to know that the importance of the strip is going to be unknown to future generations. The Whisky and places like it are where the greatest bands got their start.
I went there two years ago just to stay at the Alta Cienega hotel, Jim's Room 32 for the weekend.... Its surreal, yet so depressing... In the room alone with the lights off. You can feel the presence. truth.

The Whiskey is still there. People can go in and just feel the presence of bands like The Doors, The Birds, etc. That's what I did when I went there. I did the same thing at the Fillmore in San Francisco during the concerts I saw there. I would feel the presence of The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, etc. You can just feel the history of these places, and it's so cool! :)
Morrison was one of a find. He was high on LSD, yet able to recall the lyrics he had not used before for the End. This is one of the best "Light My Fire" and I had not heard it before. Thanks for posting.
You are welcome Diego, it was actually recorded during the Double Live album, 'Doors Absolutely live', but was left off the album. Too bad, I, like you think it really rocks. I miss identified it as recorded at the Whisky, when it was the Aquarius Theatre down the street. I saw the Doors live in 68, changed me forever, so, cobbling this piece together from many sources was truly a labor of love, rock on! Incredible video! You could drive all over the USA back in those days and see amazing live house bands everywhere, but there was not enough room at the top for all of them to have their day in the sun nationally and internationally. It was a great time to be alive.

Back in '72 I was in the Marines stationed in Santa Ana. A friend and I would hitchhike to LA, visit the strip, sleep in the Greyhound Bus Station and thumb back the next day. At 17, too young to get into the Whiskey, but good times never-the-less!!

My Morrison encounter: I'm 13 years old in 1966, at the San Jose Civic Center, hanging out near the freight door adjacent to the backstage exit door, Morrison sees me and waves me up to where he was standing, I pointed to myself and mouthed "who me?" He says, "yeah you, there's nobody else there, c'mere kid" I was blown away but I tried to be cool, I walked over nervously and loudly said "wow, hi Jim" I guess I seemed a bit too excited because he said, "why are you hanging out here, what do you hope is going to happen by meeting me?" I was completely, totally at a loss to answer him so I just shrugged and started walking away, he grabs my coat collar, smiles and says, "hey, I might learn something from you, don't leave kid!" I nervously replied "I'm 13, and your Jim Morrison, what can you learn from me?" He said, "yeah, you're probably right, but I feel like talking, he became more friendly and asked "what's your name, what grade are you in, are you a good student?" I replied " I'm Dennis, I'm in 8th grade and I'm just an average student I guess, but I'm a good baseball player." He cracked up and said, "Dennis you probably won't make a life out of playing baseball, you might, it happens but always try to learn everything you can in school, study hard and learn, just try to learn" With that, Jim grabbed my shoulder and led me in through the backstage exit door with him, he smiled and pointed to an empty folding chair and said, "nice talking with you, stay back here and enjoy the show Dennis, we're starting now..... Nothing spectacular, but that's exactly the way it happened, the show was amazing, I left without Jim ever looking back at me, and we didn't speak again.....

@@Airbaja Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett and even arguably more so without him were a very surreal, unique, often frightening band who's music, lyrics, philosophical, existential themes on their albums made them legendary in so many different, dynamic ways.
@@davidroberts7282 Agreed, I was an early proponent of their music, Obscured by Clouds and Atom Hearts Mother were mainstays on my record stack. It took them five years to catch on with the record buying mobs. Dark Side of the Moon changed everything. I saw David Gilmore here in L.A. a few years back, what a show..Syd was a driving force in the band, but his issues took him to the edge, shine on you crazy diamond.
How true that the Doors had the music to start expanding people's minds! I know! I smoked my first joint and listened to the Doors. That was it folks! Nothing was the same anymore. But if you play your cards right in life. You no longer need it. Because your life becomes that joint. I have a amazing life and doing some very cool things in the world. Good luck on your journey! ‘65... I’m 16 with my fake ID, and seeing all the bands on the strip. Went to the Whiskey, to see Arthur Lee and LOVE. They were the house band, before the Doors, as I poorly recall.
Then The Doors, were the new house band, because I think LOVE signed a recording contract. The Doors, were like nothing ever seen or heard. The Lizard King, had arrived. What a scene... I think I still get bronchitis, from all the smoke filled clubs, in the day! Worth it! Thx, for the memories, AirBaja!

Whoa, my mind is blown. Thanks for the great memories. I have been inside here many times and got to see Ray Mansarek and met Danny Sugarman. Many great nights were spent on the strip back in the 80's. My final night became July 3rd 93 when i saw Arthur Lee @ Love with the Doors tribute band Wild Child. Those were some far out times. However like most all good things, it all came crashing down on Jan 17 1994 when i was in the biggest quake in Southern California and it threw me over here to a different planet. Thank God i have the music and memories.

Tia Mia All that needs to happen is I get 600 items sold, my other half and I become more than just a couple sharing an apartment and the things in DC doesn't try to screw over us of the 90 percent. Was put on disability four months ago and am existing in the biggest challenge physically alone. Is fun trying to exist on half an income. Dealing with 16 medical conditions and not able to go back to work.

This is great. I just visited the Whiskey for the first time, and I can tell you the magic is still there. The place is actually smaller than you might think, compared to the legendary images we've scene for decades. It looks like they haven't changed it or commercialized it in too many ways since those days--they certainly could, considering its historical significance. up and coming bands still play there, like always. I went out to the back, where in the doors movie they kicked them out of the club and Morrison started climbing the fence as paul rothchild says "come down from there, Jim, let's go make an album". I smoked part of my joint right there, then went in an enjoyed that night's show. had a great time! this mini-documentary is very well done! it's interspersed with some choice historical images, of the place where all the stars went to mingle, dance and "get it on!"
When I lived there the capacity was strictly limited to 500 people.

The closest I ever came to LA was Vegas in 2010,but I was 15 in 1966 and I loved the music and still do. I would have loved to be even just a fly on the wall at the Whiskey in those days.

Have been watching Doors stuff religiously over the past few weeks - a bio reintroduced me to the Doors recently - Jim's poetry is like an explosion, and this vid is the BEST for giving you an idea of what it was really like
Thanks Melinda for the heartfelt comment. The Doors were the soundtrack of my teens, saw them twice in 68. When Jim moved to the next great plane, I was devastated. Since then Melinda, I've learned, and you reinforce this notion, that he will live forever, through his words, As Jim said, "better to be a word man than a bird man." I've done many 'Doors' related films, you might consider subscribing, it's free...Here is an example...now go with me here. Imagine Jim in the bath in Paris..slumping into unconsciousness. As he drifts to the "other-side", he finds himself thumbing his way to Nirvana, none of the cars stop, until he is pick-up by himself..He turns on the radio and hears the DJ announce his death, his journey forward begins and ends with his life flashing before his eyes in reverse. Finally lost in the desert which he loved, he finds his way home, a Rider on the Storm.

1996? I was 18, and TOTALLY obsessed with The Doors. All I listened to for months. This is after years of listening to Nirvana, Mudhoney, James Addiction, Pjam, hip hop, Toadies, Tool, ect...

Great time for great music. I am 70 and remember some of the bands and solo musicians I was lucky to hear in relatively small venues for very little money.
Those were great days and part of my life’s soundtrack. I will never forget the sights, sounds, smells, drugs and waves.😎👍🏻✌️🤟🏻
