I have to step in to "the beer is cheaper": There is a thing called "Apfelsaftgesetz" (Applejuice law) which states, that there has to be at least one non-alcoholic bewerage to be cheaper as the same amount of beer and water can´t exceed the price for beer at all. If they tell you otherwise ask for the manager and say "Apfelsaftgesetz". They´ll be frightened cuz they can face servere penalties. Nice video . Love to see people speaking what they don´t like in contrast to that box-standard "YAY GERMANY" content.
janohermano Doesn’t mean the beer was cheaper.. Some Restaurants just think they’re something better and charge more. Afterall it is Germany and the next best hobby-cop would be on their way to file a lawsuit right away
Can you teach me German? All I know is “sprechen sie deutch”. 😂 I like German though! My dads business partner (whom he created a company with here in the US 🇺🇸) is German but his kids don’t speak German so I have no one to learn from. 😭😂
Joss and Janik rocks ! I am from India living in Germany with my Chinese wife and can very much relate to some of these things. Inspired by you I've also recentely started a UA-cam channel to showcase that India/China/German cultures can co-exist and it's lots of fun !!
All you said in this video is so true! It is actually so difficult to make [german] friends. The funny fact is that the ones I have approached outside Germany are super relaxed, curious and like to talk and know stuff. In Germany, it does take a lot of time to build a friendship and sometimes you just get tired. I have invited so many times my colleagues from work and it is so difficult to agree on an activity or an appointment. They do not gather just to socialize and be relaxed, they really have to be convinced of the day, of the activity, who else is gonna attend and so on. On the contrary, with an international, you just have to send a message and after a few minutes, the plan of the evening is all set up. They are nice and reasonable but still. That and the cloudy, wet dark and short days in winter are what I find the most difficult part of living here.
I would never ever invite colleagues to become friends and I would never intend to be friends with colleagues (I am German). More people with common interests, from a club (Verein) and the like.
Try countries further north of Germany for Dark Winter nights. In Primary School in Scotlsnd in December I left the house just before 9am before the sun got up and left for home at 3pm after the sun had set.
Germans differentiate between working colleagues and private friends (The Office = Game of Thrones). As PowerControl has already said, especially educated Germans usually don't meet colleagues in private that much. If you want to find friends, join a bowling, soccer, book, cooking or any other club or start playing Computer Games. I guess, because it's so hard to connect with people in Germany, there are even Apps for bored people like "Spontacts" et cetera. The success rate might be higher there. It's possible that you get friends in smaller companies though. If there wouldn't be the current pandemic, I would meet my colleagues from foreign countries more often, so that they feel more welcomed. I find it really sad that they've got issues to connect to people as well. Usually most Germans are not terrible - They're just more reserved. That's what they're used to.

I also live in Germany and I agree sooo much with a lot of this things, the darkness in winter, the endless searching for the best product, the need of security (I think that makes life pretty boring), the bureaucracy and the difficulty making friends! I think this last point is a mix of shyness that a lot of Germans have and the problem of sticking to what they know, which are other Germans :D. I still love Germany though! And I love you guys!!!

@@janeznovak922 well I don't complain, those are facts :) and a "best" land also depends on the wealth... The most annoying thing in München (in my opinion) it’s the U-Bahn suddenly stopping or the S-Bahn cancellation 😔 Once I got left in a station and I couldn’t reach the airport so I had to take a taxi. Also about the shops I found it very shocking that they closed at 20:00 !
it can get worse on hollydays when ALL train rides for a day are canceled in Munich and the message comes PLEASE USE ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION. Happened to me a couple of times. That is why I never visit family and friends on hollyday if I can avoid it.

Having lived half of my life abroad I appreciate the fact that Sunday the shops are closed. Usually we rushed around the shops, getting this and that, and now.. ...Sundays are family time., it is quiet, total bliss And btw. Lidl am Bahnhof is open Sundays ;) und die Tanke verkauft auch Klopapier falls der totale Notfall eintreten sollte. But, apart from that, I totally agree. Pet hate, no free tap water in restaurants! And guys, you do such a great job here. Well done.
You said so much stuff that’s true!! I think the most accurate (I’m living in Hamburg now) is the “mind your own business” this annoys me ON ANOTHER LEVEL! And I have uncountable examples of this 🙄🙄
I (old white man) am behind the GEZ (TV Fee). All private stations finance themselves through advertising. That means the stations have to show what gets the most ratings. But I want to get my news from a station that is independent of its financiers. I want sophisticated entertainment that does not correspond to the mainstream. The public service broadcasters have an educational mission, which is regulated by a state treaty. That should be worth something to every citizen. If not for him, then for the idea of general information without profit motives.
Don't gripe too much about the shopping hours. I remember when the stores in Gemany all closed at 6:30 PM on weekdays and 1:30 PM on Saturdays. And the weather was worse until a few years ago too. I remember a summer in Germany (northern Germany) in which it rained practically every day for about 6 weeks. Summer, not winter!
Omg the last one is so true! My gf is German and I'm Mexican and I absolutely love her so so much, but she has to plan absolutely everything... It's so hard for her to take risks. When we go out to grab lunch at a restaurant, she always have to look at all the reviews from the all the places around before she's comfortable with one. Greeting guys!
The Best time to find friends in Germany is when you're a teenager. The only other option is joining a sports club, playing computer games online et cetera. It's nearly impossible to find friends when working in an office. I guess that's because working in Germany means Game of Thrones like behavior - Against everyone.
The part that you, Janik, say about Germans taking a long time to open up and once they do, they will be your best friend completely relates to me. But, bring on the positivity please!
Cute video! sundays off: German workers fought hard for decades to have sundays off. It is only zombieland for a consumerist low empathy capitalist mind, not zombieland at all in restaurants and in recreational places where those folks working hard all week enjoy their well earned time off instead of slaving for the rich who can afford to have sundays off to go shopping. ----------------------------------------------- tap water: You don't pay for the water, you pay for the service provided: clean, nice and heated restaurant, clean toilets, clean and nice dishes and glass and the right to spend time in this great ambiente. Think about it: restaurants are for profit organisations. Water that's for free, can only be of low quality. Notably tap water in the states is low quality chlorinated water that is harmful to your intestinal flora - main reason for the high rate of colon cancer in the states. No thanks! ----------------------------------------------- free refills: We germans happily say no to those "refills" you get in the states where your drink is watered down not only by ice cubes but on top by chlorinated tap water. ----------------------------------------------- Credit Cards: Cash is king! Cash works when a beggar comes to my door, works during a power outage, simply works always and you are not up to the mercy of a huge company that might suspend your Credit Card just when you need it most, e.g. in a remote country. Sure Credit Cards can be quite handy sometimes, and most Germans have them, but, you might have noticed, Germans are not very inclined to jump on a technology without enough every day benefits like Americans do. Innovation for the sake of innovation is not a german thing. And won't be. ----------------------------------------------- appartment: Exactly! Economics it is! Get ready to pay a lot and you'll find an apartment right away (capitalism 101 - you're welcome). Big attractive cities - big demand. Likewise in Paris or London. Move about 1 hour away from Munich and you wont have a problem at all to quickly find affordable housing. ----------------------------------------------- Every German is a "small" police officer: Every German is also a "small" offender, like Janik on his bike. ;) Due to the absence of a stupid zero tolerance policy "small" infringements are not officially persecuted like in other countries, hence leading to a culture of cavalier offense where it is socially widely accepted to interpret the rules loosly. What you find annoying is really just a friendly way of supporting you to help keep up the general level of order without the need of police patrolling around everywhere, like in so many oher countries. We can behave ourselves without a baton in sight. And let's be honest, that's what we all like about Germany, don't we? btw: those 2 walking in front of Janik's bike were just rude, are not representative, can be found everywhere else, and needed a decent yelling or a kick in their asses. ----------------------------------------------- public toilets: Are free in many locations. If they are dirty it's the users of the toilet who are to be blamed, not the providers. Maintenance costs can get high due to vandalism and people behaving like pigs in public facilities. Btw. did you know, that restaurants have to provide toilet service for free by law in 13 of the 16 german states. So don't get fooled by people who tell you otherwise. ----------------------------------------------- Efficiency: German efficiency is a myth created in other countries to explain their constant trailing economic figures due to the absence of better or less embarrassing explanations. In reality Germans couldn't care less about efficiency. If in doubt do it slow and meticulously. The german motto for sure is not hurry up rather life first, work last. ----------------------------------------------- Weather: Whatever you are used to. Talk about depression: I lived in the states (southwest). After 6 months without a cloud and without a drop of rain I was ready to commit suicide. ----------------------------------------------- TV tax: Oh my god! What an imposition! A functioning democracy doesn't come for free. Everybody has to contribute. Fairly cheap for getting somewhat neutral and fact based reporting, don't you think? Is vital to prevent capitalist post factual perversion of publicity. Shit content and shows between the news is a property of all TV stations be it public or private. In public TV at least you are not the guinea pig for opinion shaping to some rich folks. Exists in other countries with somewhat functioning public discourses, too, e.g. Switzerland. ----------------------------------------------- Bureaucracy: Immigrate to the United States an then in all seriousity tell me again that german bureaucracy is complicated. ;) ----------------------------------------------- Friendships: Means something totally different to Germans than e.g. in the states. Meaning, you cannot "make" friends. It can only grow over time. Neither you nor the german counterpart can do anything about it. It will happen or not. Works the same way between Germans, too. But you can at any time approach Germans and tell them that you seek connections and contact because you are foreigner and they will ungrudgingly involve you henceforth. However, You mustn't be disappointed that you didn't "make" a friend (yet). E.g. I have many sport mates I partly know for decades and meet rather frequently, but only very few, I'd say less than 5, really are friends. ----------------------------------------------- Risks: It's cultural. In Germany taking unnecessary risks for the simple sake of taking risks is culturally considered being rather stupid. There has to be a good reason to take a risk. Germans generally don't constantly like to jump off of cliffs, like e.g. Americans have it in their DNA. That doesn't mean that nobody is taking risks - on the contrary, there is a reason why Germany globally is one of the most entrepreneurial active countries.
Very much this. I actually stopped watching this video at "thing" #1, because I guessed (correctly) that the next 11 things would be just as superficial as the first one. Had you dug deeper you would have understood why these things are how they are. Sorry for being so blunt, but that also is a German trait.
The thing that pissed me off about the TV tax is that they have advertisements. So they are getting paid for these advertisements...while they leech money from the public. They have a higher budget than the BBC, yet no programs even half as good as the BBC. It's a rip off.
@@LauraTheRed as I wrote: the TV tax funds independent quality reporting, which is ad free. Shows are only partly funded by the TV tax and need to earn their costs the capitalist way on public TV, too. If it's bad for your health (blood pressure): nobody forces you to watch german public TV channels. BBC is available in Germany, too. ;)
I lived in Germany for a year and I agree with you guys. That toilet part... xD I am from Japan and had never ever ever paid for the public toilets... toilets here are a lot cleaner, automatic and most importantly, for free... lol, I definitely took it for granted... whereas in Germany you pay for the dirty toilet. haha that’s been unreasonable for me haha. - loving your channel so much, didnt comment before but just wanted to say hi. The one about stability really hits home. I live in Germany and want to make my own business and do something that's a bit out of the norm. But every person around me is advising me against it. They say it's better to have a normal job where I have stability and bla bla. I'm gonna do my thing anyway, but it's kind of tiring to be surrounded by nay-sayers. But I also have to understand it's their culture and the way they've been raised

Germany is (or try) more about perfection, we are prone to improvisation and spontaneity. I've heard stories of Germans living in Latin America for a while, and once they are back they suffer a culture shock in reverse by readapting to their home country.
Oh my goodness, you guys are so funny! I agree on almost everything except the first point, because I really enjoy the quite vibe and lifestyle on Sundays :D nobody is stressed, everything is calm, just like a real Sunday should be! I loved the video
Oh the Frau Müller category, so much! Once when I was sitting in the train station, eating a mandarin, neatly stacking the peels beside me to through them away after I was done, a random guy walked up to me and SUPER aggressively asked whether I would throw them away after. And then after I said yes he asked me twice more and admonished me just in case I didn't. I finally said that it wasn't any of his business anyway and oh my, the rant... But also with people I know. Having dinner with my in-laws (9 people, all in all) at a pizzeria and I had a headache so I had the gall to order a latte befóre dinner. Enter a five minute discussion between half the table ánd the waitress about how that was not done, and bad for you and was I reaaaally sure? Ehhh, sorry, isn't my drink MY choice? Do I really have to explain my reasoning to all of you?
I love the how I met your mother playbook style you pulled off here. To the beer thing, it is actually a law that the cheapest drink on a menu has to be non alcoholic
Lived in Germany for 8 years, been "married" to a German woman. Most of the points you mentioned are ok for me, besides the TV tax, which I dislike because I never had a TV while I lived there and had to pay for it. But - maybe to avoid polemics - you didn't touch in the main points, the really delicate ones that make most non-European (sometimes even European) people who lived there dislike Germany, including me. Every time I mentioned those points in front of Germans I was stacked by them, verbally or even - 3 times, including out of Germany - physically. One of them, the craziest one, was after speaking for over one hour about everything I loved about Germany in a table of people I knew. When I started mentioning the things I didn't like - to the same people who had heard me for one hour - I was attacked and yelled at and much more. I am the kind of person that if you say something bad about my country, I will join you and tell you much more, things you can't even dream of, that are horrible. And I will do the same if you say good things about my country. That was never possible in Germany.
Im really sorry for your experience! While I now did wonder what these delicate points are (just out of curiosity) I understand how they might cause problems. Generally, I would like to say that most Germans are open to all the positive as well as negative aspects of it. Not sure where in Germany you were (former east Germans might react a little more allergic) but I still hope it didn’t deter you completely (having a German partner makes that quite impossible i would assume haha)
OMG... This video should be shown to anyone planning to move to Germany and prevent them from having a massive cultural-shock headache. I agree with every single point mentioned in the video. However, I have got to say, not having stores opening on Sunday is in the end good encouragement to plan better and do other plans unrelated to consumism. Last but not least: I don’t know who I hate more, the pissed lady in the public toilet tossing coins to make people realise you need to pay or the fact that you got to pay extra for TV and radio, when I don’t even have a freaking TV! 😂😭
It’s good to hear about Germans being pissed off by German ‘police officers’ who claim they have to right to tell what’s right and what’s wrong to do on a bikeway. It happens to me every single time, and I still can’t get over it
Then just keep to the [insert swear word of choice here] rules. You would swear and argue with a driver who is parking on the bike lane - so live with it that pedestrians are fed up with you breaking the rules, too.
@@jameshuang9568 Small, harmless mistakes are something else. When someone knowingly breaks a regulation, like the guy in the video, it's a different quality. What if there are children running who do not have to reckon with a cyclist on the sidewalk who also drives in the wrong direction? What if they are then hurt? Would you still call it a small, harmless mistake? In the case of small, harmless mistakes, I am completely with you, but not when someone breaks the law! It's funny that people consider pointing out wrongdoing worse, than the wrongdoing itself. As I said, stick to rules and laws, then nobody has to teach you about wrongdoing. Even better, if you don't know the rule and someone explains it to you, just be happy and grateful that you can behave correctly from now on.

If they tell you otherwise ask for the manager and say "Apfelsaftgesetz". They´ll be frightened cuz they can face servere penalties.
Nice video . Love to see people speaking what they don´t like in contrast to that box-standard "YAY GERMANY" content.

They can defnitely co-exist
ChIndian in Germany Thats crazy. Now you just gotta adopt a Columbian and Norwegian kid and youre all set
PowerControl Yeah thats kinda sad.. Id love if we had this “wanna come hangout?” attitude here..
Jacku Dark Why do you think that is?

@@janeznovak922 well I don't complain, those are facts :) and a "best" land also depends on the wealth...
Correct (from a young white man).
I love how Janik looks at Joss 11:10 so sweet!

The cleanest, most modern toilet I've ever visited was in Germany, I thought it would be like that everywhere there.
9:06 Confirm!! It is also true that Germans are very good friends, but it takes forever to reach that point (if...)

Nguyen Chau hahaha thats harsh xD
I’ve been here for 22 years and haven’t reached that point still 😅
That explains everything about me... I’m half German. :)
Quatsch 😂
Yeah cold icy Germans... hahahahahaa
Joss looks really stunning with her new haircut😱💖
How boring.
Cute video!
sundays off:
German workers fought hard for decades to have sundays off. It is only zombieland for a consumerist low empathy capitalist mind, not zombieland at all in restaurants and in recreational places where those folks working hard all week enjoy their well earned time off instead of slaving for the rich who can afford to have sundays off to go shopping.
-----------------------------------------------
tap water:
You don't pay for the water, you pay for the service provided: clean, nice and heated restaurant, clean toilets, clean and nice dishes and glass and the right to spend time in this great ambiente.
Think about it: restaurants are for profit organisations. Water that's for free, can only be of low quality. Notably tap water in the states is low quality chlorinated water that is harmful to your intestinal flora - main reason for the high rate of colon cancer in the states.
No thanks!
-----------------------------------------------
free refills:
We germans happily say no to those "refills" you get in the states where your drink is watered down not only by ice cubes but on top by chlorinated tap water.
-----------------------------------------------
Credit Cards:
Cash is king!
-----------------------------------------------
appartment:
Exactly!
-----------------------------------------------
Every German is a "small" police officer:
Every German is also a "small" offender, like Janik on his bike. ;) Due to the absence of a stupid zero tolerance policy "small" infringements are not officially persecuted like in other countries, hence leading to a culture of cavalier offense where it is socially widely accepted to interpret the rules loosly.
-----------------------------------------------
public toilets:
Are free in many locations.
-----------------------------------------------
Efficiency:
German efficiency is a myth created in other countries to explain their constant trailing economic figures due to the absence of better or less embarrassing explanations.
In reality Germans couldn't care less about efficiency.
If in doubt do it slow and meticulously.
The german motto for sure is not hurry up rather life first, work last.
-----------------------------------------------
Weather:
Whatever you are used to. Talk about depression: I lived in the states (southwest). After 6 months without a cloud and without a drop of rain I was ready to commit suicide.
-----------------------------------------------
TV tax:
Oh my god!
-----------------------------------------------
Bureaucracy:
Immigrate to the United States an then in all seriousity tell me again that german bureaucracy is complicated.
;)
-----------------------------------------------
Friendships:
Means something totally different to Germans than e.g. in the states.
-----------------------------------------------
Risks:
It's cultural.
@Samarpan Bhav Gefällt Dir nischt? Gehst Du einfach anderes Scheißland, Mann. Braucht Disch hier eh keiner.
BBC is available in Germany, too. ;)

Amazing Video!! Keep it up guys! I can totally relate as me (Indian) and my German GF talks about it all the time.
It was not only for TV but for Radio use also and nowdays Computer use is added to that fee as well
Pretty cool video you guys! Great job!

@@jameshuang9568 Small, harmless mistakes are something else.
When someone knowingly breaks a regulation, like the guy in the video, it's a different quality.
What if there are children running who do not have to reckon with a cyclist on the sidewalk who also drives in the wrong direction?

Hi Joss and Janik , me and my boyfriend are from different countries too and we just moved to Poland. The things you say about Germany are common for Poland too. Sunday shopping is a forbidden fruit here too.
And we also are looking for foreigners to make friends with ( because we have the same problem as you 🙈) If you are coming back to Europe please be our friends 😃 We went to Mexico last year and we loved it.Your content is awesome. All the best 🤗
Hey! Guys I love watching you. you both are crazy lol. hahaha mucho lokos. You guys are ADORABLE together very nice couple. you both have good vibes. I hope one day you come to visit. Charlotte NC I'll show you the city. haha God bless you guys.
Always good videos! Thanks for share it ❤ love you guys!
It's out of context but I'm living for Joss' new haircut omg 💕
Hola Joss y Janik primera vez que soy de las primeras personas en ver el video😬🤗👍 hagan colaboracion con los WeroWeroTV seria padrisimo ver a Janik con sus paisanos 😂😂.
Tere Mena siiiii apoyo!!!
I spent around 10 years in Germany. I really don’t get the thing with the credit cards. If you get robbed, and you are carrying cash, it’s gone, but if your credit card gets stolen you can at least lock it or ask the bank to refund your money if it has been used. Plus, you get cash back rewards on purchases too.
6:19 En Monterrey hay un edificio que lleva A Ñ O S sin terminarse, ni siquiera estoy segura de que estén trabajando en él actualmente, simplemente está ahí, sin terminar xd
Love your hair, Joss! This is a fun video because you were expressing your truth in a fun way. I’ve experienced some of those same issues when visiting Germany as well.
Am I the only one that finds amazing that "all" Germans are like "police officers"? I mean, It is great!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯
It is an exaggeration. I am German and always mind my own business.
No its not. Its fucking annoying
No, their likes nicer Karen’s. You can’t breath without being told you are doing it wrong.
i love that they are both well aware of their own countries’ successes and failures ✨ they are not creating a fake reality of their culture just to make it more likeable. Big love for both of you guys!
Great couple, great chemistry and funny too!
ustedes dos son relationship goals ! verlos reírse juntos me alegra el día. Ihr seid toll !
I hate the TV tax so freaking much. I don't even own a TV and I would never even watch TV. I feel like I'm being robbed every time I pay it.
It’s not only tv it’s also Radio too.
And nooooow we need a video where you talk about the things in which you prefer one country over the other 🤩
And PLEEEAAASEEEE do a video where you compare studying at the university between Mexico and Germany 😍
Und die lieben Grüße an die Mama dürfen natürlich auch nicht fehlen 😄 Liebe Grüße aus Salzburg 👋🏻🇦🇹
Danke...und viele Grüße zurück 🤗
I thought the one about the reviews was just my boyfriend! He's german and also checks a lot of reviews before buying anything, even when we want to eat out. Now I know it's maybe a German thing hehe
IVE LITERALLY BEEN LAUGHING FOR AN HOUR 4 UR VIDEOS 😂😂❤️❤️
The Dark Side of Germany: Double standards and hypocrisy! And when the system dont work for you, you are at hell. But nobody believe, that the system dont work.
But the system works most of the time. The German system makes life more fair than in 95% of other countries.
Totally true! I am a Spanish leaving in Germany and I can relate to EVERYTHING, haha. well done!
Mind your own business was me all the time in Germany hahahaha
Interesting video. I love learning about different cultures and would love to travel through Europe in the near future.......well, perhaps after this pandemic.
