  • A black bear with her cub testing the electric fence at my bee hives.
With the very hot weather in western Canada during the summer of 2021 the berry crop was poor and many bears were displaced by the many wildfires. We had dozens of visits from black bears that year.

Those small boulders near the fence might seem like a bit of inspiration for a bear to get on it to "climb" a little higher.

I'm wondering if electric bear mats surrounding the fence wouldn't help prevent them from testing the fence. Bears are persistent. If they can't even get near the fence, or every time they try, they get a shock, I think that would prove too much for them.

Nice idea but I think the bears are just obsessed with your beehives seems to me it would be easier to build a platform off the ground high enough that the bears couldn't access it easily.

Put the battery and solar panel inside the wire with a remote shutoff. Bears have been known to pull wires out and defeat your setup.

Tape and plain wire electric fences are NOTORIOUSLY USELESS on thick furry/wooly animals, not to mention chickens. Some might get a shock on their wet nose if/when sniffing the wire, but most just walk straight through them.
The best improvements are to use closely spaced *barbed wire* (to penratrate the fur), AND to have a very high current with a short frequency sender with a very good (wet) earth stake. Add some vertical strakes to prevent push-through.

I like to let you know that you're not smart electric fences ends your brain if you cannot release contact if they get caught on a fence it's your job to dispose of it I've had the same experience things to get caught and it's not pretty when you have to get rid of them
