- Polar bears are known to destroy huts or tents in search for food. In polar bear areas, camps need therefore a good protection to keep hungry bears out. Our study site in Spitsbergen is frequented by polar bears in summer. Over the past years we have favourable experience with electric fences surrounding our tents. This video shows how polar bears respond to the protected camp: (1) curious without further interest (as occurs most often), (2) coming close to the electric fence without touching, and (3) touching the fence when attempting to enter the enclosure. For adequate protection, the electric fence should be used in combination with other means to detect and scare polar bears.

If the bear isn’t chasing you down, I assume there would be no reason for it to try to run through an electric fence. I’m no expert, but I think it would be best to stay inside the tent when a polar bear is passing by
@@koifish528 They are not there for tea and cookies(maybe they are) and a nice visit. They are hungry and that fence is not foolproof. If it wants you for dinner, you are done.
They start out so incredibly tiny and are unbelievably adorable, then they grow into these large vicious animals

Black bears even though cute are more dangerous to humans than grizzlies ,if you ever encounter one and it follows you it intens to eat you.
@@ivanjones8144 I think that is debatable. Grizzlies are more territorial and ready to fight, but you can scare black bears off the vast majority of the time. They are pretty shy creatures if curious, I wouldn't be terribly worried unless it was really late in their season. Still I wouldn't want to have to fight either of them.
@@ivanjones8144 polar bears are one of the very few if not the only predators that view humans as nothing but food/prey. Even tigers/lions think twice about it.

The bird know they will die if they get too close, but also know that they can fly away if the bear tries to run at them. They just mutually agree that neither of them is a threat or a meal.

the prospect of shooting a bear will concern anyone, cause in this case you will have couple of seconds to make a perfect shot under adrenaline shock before you dead!

@@AlphaQHard It is required by law in Svalbard that any person or group traveling outside of town must carry a gun and have someone that knows how to use it. Tom Scott made a video about this. So yes, they do also have guns.

Of course, you can't go to polar bear land without a rifle. But it's better to have fences so you can avoid shooting one.

I would build 2 fences - an inner and an outer circle with some distance between them. Otherwise I would be afraid that a bear, probably in a rush, would just overstep one fence

If they were much hungrier it may be a different matter. Then the pain/reward balance swings in favour of being a bit more persistent.
Yeah but very rarely shooting one extremely hungry and determined bear is better than shooting every single bear that crosses your path, most of which are probably just a little curious.

Did anybody else hear that story about the lawyer who got mauled by a polar bear in Torngat Mountains National Park? He had an electric fence around his camp too, and it did nothing because the polar bear was hungry and determined enough to brave the shock to get to the guy sleeping in his tent. There's a reason they recommend you take armed guards with you when you go into polar bear country...
Yes I remember that. Their group didn't have an armed guard/guide tho. Easy for me to say, but I don't think I would feel ok with just an electric fence between me and the biggest bears on earth.

The air around a high voltage has a smell animals can detect but they do not have any reference until they touch the fence. 7500 volt is not exceptionally high, 10,000 volts is the max. Voltage should be as high as possible because of the long hair on Polar Bears and they could become very aggressive. If you were cooking dinner when one showed up you would want as much power as possible.
All is well until the bear accidentally barrels through the fence and realizes, "hey, this ain't nothing! What was I so afraid of?"
I think people underestimate just how grim a death it would be, literally eaten alive. People always think they're smarter than they are.

Timothy Treadwell and his gf got eaten alive. 6 minutes of the attack was recorded and he was alive for 4 minutes screaming and asking for help while being eaten.
@@mat5473 yeah watched it a long time ago. Its sad that his gf could of lived, but she stayed with him the entire time. I would have ran so far away for help although help probably would of arrived too late it was their best chance of survival because standing their for moral support doesn't do anything.
But I'm not making fun of a bad decision in an intense situation, at least it shows how loyal and brave she is and those are honourable traits. R.I.P. to both. Timothy trusted bears so much he went their completely defenseless with no weapons, its so sad how naive he was with wild animals
@@Hybred IIRC his girlfriend finally tried to vacate the area whenever the bear dragged him away and then the bear tracked her down. They had written about this exact bear in their journals, that she obviously had it out for them and made them feel uncomfortable. They had established a bond with all of the other bears through the years but she was unfamiliar and it only takes one bear to fuck your world up. I think it just so happened that they were visiting a little too late in the season and there had been some sort of salmon shortage in the area so food was a little more low than usual? It’s been a while since I’ve read about this....Although I think I remember the girlfriend being extremely apprehensive and irritable because she felt uncomfortable and wanted to go. I believe that was intuition. Gut feelings should NEVER be ignored. It’s a shame they didn’t listen to theirs and that they weren’t carrying a weapon because I can imagine very few worse ways to go.
What happens if the bear freaks out during it's shock and goes through it, then you're stuck with a polar bear on your side of the fence that is too scared to try to leave. I learned this from my neighbor training his dog with an electric fence, he freaks out, goes through and is too scared to come back over

@@stevepalpatine2828 I think this silly idea people have about bears being semi-bulletproof is like some old wives tale because I remember being told the same crap when I was a child. And while I don't wanna be the guinea pig to find out, I think bear spray is probably a little faster at slowing down a bear because of the instant neuro reaction in the brain, where bullets may destroy the nerve that would send the pain signal.

Would be smart to yell "hey bear", right after it got shocked.
This will teach the bear that close contact with humans can cause pain,
and will avoid humans in the future when they yell at the bear.

The speaking low and saying "hey bear" is to let the bear know you are there and are no threat to it on a trail and you will be slowly backing away.
The idea on a deterant of any kind is to make the threatening animal feel uncomfortable or pain and to leave the area rather than be killed. Backing up the fence with spraying the bear with bear spray would enhance the electric shock.

Realist, yeah, I’m not sure bout that. I think I’m with ol Rudolf on this. Because the bear already smells you and there’s good chances it has already seen or even saw you immediately prior. So, yeah, I think it would be a good idea to make the same verbal cue you’d use for potential future close encounters.
Unless, however way, you know for certain that the bear doesn’t know you’re there, than yeah, stay quite. But, probably unlikely so “HEY BEAR, BACK THE F’CK UP, please.”

A friend of mine wraps his electric fence with bacon. He says when the bears get jolted in their mouth it is much of an effective deterrent.
The bacon doesn't attract the bears with its smell? I would refrain from having any sort of food outside where bears can smell them.

"Hey Boo Boo, looks like a camp with a 'picanic' basket"....LOL...I can see the electric fence being a good deterrent, used frequently on farms, so long as the solar panel and battery hold out. Just hope one of the bears does not mistake the battery box for a cooler. On the one shot, it looked like the battery and panel were outside of the fence.

We use the same technique for protecting our honey bee hives during cranberry pollination , from black bears .

Those fences give a false sense of security. I saw a video two days ago where a bear dug up under the electric fence. It only took about 3 minutes.

The ONLY thing that kept you alive was luck. If the bear is certain there is a bountiful food source, that fence will barely slow it down.

This is should be a mandate for all the explorers into forests or other places.
l knew a guy who worked for adf&g in southeast ak. used this method on brown bear back in the early 70s. he said it worked for a little while, till one day a bear got zapped bit the fence and took of with the wire stuck in its teeth. tore up the fence in the process.
The shock needs to be much more severe he has tested it more than once.
It works if they approach it cautiously during the day. I read about a bear walking into one without seeing it at night and by the time it has a wee shock the bear has already knocked it down and was inside the camp eating folk.
I think it was the Matthew Dyer case and there have been others. I'd suggest light but that might attract them for all I know.
We use the fence during the arctic summer (permanent daylight).

Your video also states: "For adequate protection, the electric fence should be used in combination with other means to detect and scare polar bears." So you are not suggesting they are bear-proof.
I read that a French woman was attacked on Svalbard last year leading to a bear being shot dead and a campsite manager was killed in a site without fences again they shot the bear. I know there is a big debate about camping and Polar Bears in the area and I really am not knowledgeable to comment on it.

I think the authorities make people very aware of the risks. I'm not sure the polar bears understand the risks to their lives, though.

Luckily bears aren't known for charging inanimate, man made objects
Trust me that fence will stop it I have one where I live around my cabin. The electricity is equivalent to being tazed for us. For them it doesn't necessarily hurt more or less the sudden shock will throw them off guard and as there are better alternatives to getting food. The bear will usually just leave or keep trying the fence until it realizes how much work itll have to go through to maybe find food.

@@MrSkaterCat lol. Hmm. See I used to raise and tend to cattle and one of my tasks was repairing electric fences when cows would get caught up in them and either break lines or disrupt the charge. And I am talking cows. Not a polar bear which is twice as big and heavy. Trust me. If that polar bear wanted to break that fence it wouldn't have any problem at all. I wouldn't feel safe with polar bears roaming around my tent just because I have an electric fence up. Lol.
@@savathunsthirdball1922 polar bears are alot smarter and alot more cautious, they're ability to feed relies on them not getting hurt, they're smart enough to know that the fence could hurt them, and what ever is on the other side probably isnt worth it. its easier to catch something else
If you combine the fence and a loud noise, eventually the bears would be deterred by the noise alone.

idk bears seem to be way more cautious than they ever should be. the explanation ive heard is that in the wild predators like bears dont like to take undue risks because even a small injury to them could cause infection and death or something like that. or being disabled even temporarily could cause them to lose their life in a battle with another predator.
