  • WeissKlang have dropped a bomb on the affordable LDC market. The L-1 is hand made in Germany but costs less than 300 Euros. However sE have been refining the 2200 for years and it's half the price. I'm all ears....
00:20 sE2200 How do sE make their mics so affordable?
02:25 The L-1 is twice the price of the sE2200 but the big question is:' how do they make it so cheap?' Is it a $1000 mic for $300 odd?
    05:15 L-1 off axis @ 90 degrees
    05:50 L-1 off axis @ 180 degrees
    06:35 sE 2200 off axis @ 90 degrees
    07:00 sE2200 off axis @ 180 degrees
07:20 Just twice the price or twice as good?

Very nice test! It's astonishing what high level of quality in LSCs is available at these prices! None of these mics seem to suffer from cheap-mic-hardness or squeeking consonants, and both have really impressive self noise figures! In my monitors, the SE2200 sound "warmer" than the Weissklang, which is no bad thing for your voice. The Weissklang is leaner in the low end, and it seems to have a really nice clarity in the upper mid-frequencies - without becoming hard. It could be interesting to hear some variation in mic distance, if you continue with LDC comparisons. Maybe the SE will tame the warmth a bit if you back off a couple of inches. The Weissklang is new to me, and this is a promising introduction.

Hi Mikkel - yes the quality has definitely come on in leaps and bounds. Thanks for such close listening, I agree that the 2200 sounds warmer than the WeissKlang and that that suits my nasal voice. However have a listen to the 2200 v the 414 ULS and tell me what you think? I take the point about different distances, I have done that in the past and maybe I should return to that. I'm always getting told off for being too far from the mic. Anyway thanks for taking the time. Ta like, ppm6.

Thank you. The L1 seems great and champagne is back in stock for €251 excl VAT and I was about to order. But the following email from WeissKlang informed me they have a special for their much more upmarket V13 or V17 mics - both reduced from €499 to 299. Use the code wk-foryou to get this special pricing. I have no affiliation with them but thought this might be of interest. I ordered the V17 ! Thank you for your continued reviews.

Vincent - what are you doing? I am already broke - and now you have me desiring another WeissKlang mic! Let us know how you get on with the V17 and thanks for dropping such a helpful comment - it's always good to know about bargains, even if your mic budget is broken! Ta like, ppm6.

Thanks for the feedback and for dropping by. I just bought a more expensive Weissklang the V17.... and I'm not sure. It's growing on me but the L1 I enjoyed straight off the bat. Money can't buy me love. Let us know how you get on with the sE 2200? Ta like, ppm6

The WeissKlang sounds great. I had an sE X1s and I had like annoying room resonances being amplified with that voicing and I hear the same thing with the sE 2200 on you!

Hi - well that's interesting, as far as I can work out the X1s is the electret while the 2200 is the true condenser and I think the capsules are a different size - but I might be making that up. What did you replace the X1s with? I suffer from nasality and I feel the 2200 warms me up a bit, which is good. ta like, ppm6.

The differences with high-end microphones are in the details. And sometimes those details matter. It is worth noting that the L1 has an incredibly low self-noise -4dB (new version of sE2200 - 8 dB) and a higher SPL than 2200.
I tested both microphones and when it comes to transients the L1 is one of the best.

Hi AW - thanks for some real world experiences of the L1 and the 2200. I have to say I am unsure about the relevance of low noise. It's a good sure (and the L1 has exceptionally low noise) but how important is it? The Rode NT1 - which will feature in this series shortly also has a very low self noise but how that does or doesn't translate into overall sound quality (as long as the noise isn't audible) isn't clear to me. I agree transient response is likely to be important - I don't think I've ever seen any measurement data for this. Did you buy the L1? Ta like, ppm6.

They are out of the champagne color L1's right now...black is in stock. Hmm...

Hi, Black is good you know - I opened the box and looked at the champagne and thought... should I have had black? Mind you the black finish on my old 414s had blistered something chronic, as we say in Wales. Thanks for dropping by, ta like, ppm6.
