LDC Mics - Rode Cheap as Chips or Shure Best Bargain? Original NT1 v KSM27 414 ULS Adjudicating

I currently use TLM 102 without the internal foam for clarinet recordings but I wonder If TLM 103 or KM184 are worthy upgrades to It or If no need to consider them.. What do you think?
Well first - I'm not sure you will notice a massive difference with either. The KM184 is great, I have a couple but are they streets ahead of the 102, I'm not sure. The 103 is a great mic but a lot would depend on how much you can get for your 102. I wouldn't want to be spending 4 or 5 hundred Euros for the difference. In fact if I can suggest something crazy. Buy a Line Audio CM4 - they are cheap but they are also have a flat frequency response unlike the 102 or Gefell M930. Actually you should try and hear the Gefell if you can it is very good. If you like the presentation of the Line Audio then you stick or twist for a lot more money for a Scheops! Keep up the playing! Ta like, ppm6.
@ppmtv-qh9qk Thank you.
@ppmtv-qh9qk Just for the record, I've noticed a massive difference going from Audio Technica AT4040 and Austrian Audio OC16 to TLM102. AT4040 was the warmest sounding, OC16 had balanced, neutral sound and TLM102 was my pick, as It captured way more detail than AT4040 and OC16 and the low end also had more punch but very clean. Clearer sounding mic of the bunch overall.
I don't have a Rode Podcaster but there's plenty of videos on YT to get an idea of the sound. I'm guessing it might be the top end (high frequencies) that you don't like on the NT1. There is a lot to be said for the Shure SM7B. It is used everywhere for a reason. It is a fantastic mic and a bit darker than most condensers like the NT1. ua-cam.com/video/xEn5Th0i98E/v-deo.html It will last forever and it has frequency filters built in if you want to change the sound. The down side is cost and beware cheap SM7Bs on ebay they are almost certainly Chinese copies. That actually makes it hard to buy a real SM7B! I don't have the RE20 but I do have the cheaper RE320 which is excellent, never had a problem. sE make a good podcasting mic and the Beyerdynamic TG88 is a famous vocal mic. Mk4 rode nt1 daha iyi değil mi ?
Build quality the the Sennheiser MK4 is significantly better. But I think the NT1 is perfectly useable and will be half the price (at least) buying second hand. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can carry out the Jim Williams mods to the NT1 and tame the top end a bit by replacing two of the internal capacitors. For the long game by the MK4. I still only have one CMC641 and the Neumann KM185 works so well as a left channel in stereo with these different mics
That is very interesting! especially as the KM185 is half the price, give or take. Do you find the 185 more prone to bumps and pops? Ta like, ppm6.
@ppmtv-qh9qk I will say that the trained ear will discern that the Schoeps has more transient detail. If the KM185 is more prone to that, it isn't anything egregious conpared to the CMC641
That's interesting and comforting in a way - that you pay more and get more. I think it is a discerning ear as the 185 has a bump at 10kHz which might give the impression of more details. Ta like, ppm6.
Zoom F8n for me. I love it it has everything as a professional system would. I love the Bluetooth feature to control the mix with my ipad. The PFL is easy to get too, I set my knobs to trim not fade(which is the right way anyways) the digital limiter is actually decent. Hella noise floor and I have two ways to power it(batteries don’t count, those are there to allow me to hot swap). The sound is fantastic quality for what it does from its time and it’s extremely affordable. I can use it with my DAW and I set all 8 tracks to the daw. I love it. I’ll eventually add the f8n pro but I’m not really concerned with 32bit.
Thanks Tony for a mini-review - I don't disagree with any of that! Ta like, ppm6.
Como es lo del Metro de distancia en el gefell? No entendí bien. Puede explicármelo y lo traduzco . Gracias
Hi, Gefell advise that the proximity effect (or bass tip up as it is sometimes called) begins when the source is one meter from the microphone or nearer. The amount of bass boost increases as the distance between the source and the microphone gets smaller. Ta like, ppm6.
@@ppmtv-qh9qk Perfect, now I understand. It's just that I just have an m930 and it's really wonderful. I'm VoiceOver and so far I'm fascinated with this microphone. I follow your videos, keep it up, a hug from Uruguay
Hi Maldonad, You have made a great choice of microphone. The m930 is a very, very good mic and well priced compared with some of the competition and it's small size means it gets into lots of tight spaces. I'm hoping to try the new Gefell 400 series mics - the are very small format sdc mics to compete with Scheops I think. Ta like, ppm6.
The entire monitoring section is in mono which is ok for stage monitors but a deal breaker if you’re using in ears. You’ll need to use 2 auxs for L&R and any of the stereo channels will only be in mono. Shame

Looking forward to the video - there's a theory that late model KSM27s have the same low noise circuitry as the newer SM27s. Hi what do you suggest to stream live gong baths please. I have read somewhere that the se8 is a good candidate but I see that the CM4 is slightly cheaper. Someone also said a sure sm7b is good but pricey. Thank you for the channel
Hi Hendrik, without seeing the lay out I can only give general advice. The CM4 is excellent though maybe not as robust as an sE8. Both are cardioids. Are you planning stereo streaming - you can experiment with coincident and maybe ORTF mic placement. Spaced omnis are another option - there is an omni capsule for the sE8 which I don't have and Line Audio make an omni version of the cm4 - which might be the CM2. Depending on your approach omnis may be less useful for other things, certainly any time you want directionality. Let me know how you get on. Ta like, ppm6.
For all those fellow flute and woodwind players out there.. if you can not afford a Neumann KM 184, this is the best microphone you can get (provided you use correct positioning). Trust me, I have been there. After buying (and returning some) SM 57/58, Beta 57a, V7, V7x, NT1A, NT1, NT5, Oktava MK012, ... This sounds by far the best on a flute (and probably other woodwinds).
Hi Mustafa - there's nothing like real world experience and you've done some ground work to back up your choice. I would also consider the Line Audio CM4 and maybe a second hand KSM27 to add to your recommendation of the sE8 - which here in the UK is very well priced bargain! Ta like, ppm6.
Thank you for the wonderful review! I am definitely aiming at this mic after your review. CM4 looks good in your other reviews, but it is rather hard to get one where I live. What would be your recommendation for recording two people (podcast like situation, two people sitting together)? Should I get a pair or can it be done well with one mic only? That is going to happen very occasionally.
Hi Aretm, in BBC talks studios in the olden days we did 1 + 1 with a ribbon mic and moved it back and forwards to suit the strength of the two voices... But now I think best to get two mics maybe the Lewitt 040 which are very affordable to start with. Might be easier to get than the CM4. i own two pairs of KM 184 and recently bought a pair of SE 8. In my opinion The Neumann are superior Mics, just sound better, and on any acoustic guitar with API Pre Amps they are perfect. The SE 8 are great options but i wouldnt trade KMs for them.
I think that is a very fair comment. The Neumann's are three times the price and to some extent you get what you pay for. Having said that there's no reason not to get excellent results with the sE8 and of course you can buy three of them for the price of one 184. But then I'm not giving up my 184s either. Thanks for the real world experience. Ta like, ppm6.
Bought this thing because of the amazing ability to input my external instruments into Studio One and be able to EQ and place plugins on them w/o having to track them as audio. Unfortunately, I immediately started having lots of crazy problems with Studio One ending in not even being able to get some of the outs of the thing working. I finally just unplugged the thing and went back to using my analog mixing board and all the crazy problems are gone.

What is better DAC Audient id or Rme?
Very good question. Can I point you to the audiosciencereview website for technical reviews and tests. I had a quick look for the iD44 but couldn't find it but they have other Audient interfaces and lots of RME. I'm going to say that their DAC performance will be close enough not to be audibly different. But you may have better ears than me! Generally RME are considered to have the best drivers in the business but the Audient is handily cheaper... it is a tough call. I say you will be happy with either. Ta like, ppm6.
The trouble with ribbon mics the incredible sensitivity to movement, dropping and falling. Not for outside recording or broadcasting…….. my experience.
True dat - and of course many can be killed by phantom power. There is an exception to every rule though - the Coles 4104 lip mic. coleselectroacoustics.com/4104-commentators-microphone/ Used on outdoor sporting events across the world and plenty tough. I have one some where, must do a video some time. But generally keep them indoors and treat them with kid gloves. Ta like, ppm6.
I came across your video on the Motu-nation forum website. I've been doing this exact thing with my Motu 24Ao and 24 Ai and 2 presonus NSB8.8 stageboxes. All flawlessly. All cat6 cable going to and from my presonus SW5e switch. I decided to buy a Motu AVB switch so that I can leave my SW5e in my live setup rack. Motu says simple plug-in-play. But not the case. Drop outs were plenty. tried everything, update firmware on the motu switch but no luck. Put my SW5e back into the system and all worked just great. I wish I knew what the heck is going on. Wonder if anyone has had run across this. Thanks and great video!
Hi Steve - I have to say I haven't tried the MOTU switch so I don't have any real world experience. I do remember having to upgrade the firmware in my 112D which helped with AVB connectivity to my 16R. Your system looks great on paper, shame about dropouts. Does MOTU support offer any advice? How do I switch between a different monitor pair and my main monitor pair?
Sorry Oliver been busy. I assume you've got the main pair on the XLR outputs and the check monitors on line outputs? Inside the MOTU web app you select the mixer (rather than the router) and this allows you to assign and select main outputs and monitor outputs from your computers browser. I'm running out of desk/rack room so I don't have my 112D plugged up, the software is the same across the interfaces, but if you have further questions fire away and I'll replug and get back to you. Great review. For people intending to use it for live sound, i strongly advise against it, mostly because the remote control software (UC) has many shortcomings (especially compared to the Behringer/Midas XM32 consoles equivalent), and some are just way too serious for professional use : - the PEQ section is way too small - there is no offline editor - not enough tap point options for sends to busses : for instance you can't have it post EQ but pre compressor/limiter, or you can't have it post gate but pre EQ/comp/limiter. This really sucks if you're using the console for both FOH and MON at the same time. The Behringer/Midas XM32 is way better than this.
Thanks for taking the time to lay down some important detail. I think of your three points personally I'm not so bothered abut offline - as I have access to the 16R all the time. Though I can see not everyone will be in that position. Good point about PEQ but for me the tap point is likely the biggest stumbling block. Good spots all. Ta like, ppm6.
@@ppmtv-qh9qk You're welcome. Of course in some other contexts (like yours), all the problems i've pointed out have little significance :)
And that's why the more real world user info we have - the better things are. One interesting observation is that development in this segment of the market has slowed. A lot of the kit remains unrefreshed. Where is the rack mount A&H product based on SQ? And shouldn't the Wing rack have dropped by now? Which reminds me if the 16R had midi then adding a hardware fader solution would be easier. Anyway thanks for dropping by. Ta like, ppm6.
This might be a buy for me. I have an RME card that takes 8 ins but my current mixer only has 4 outs. I could hookup things directly but I love to "pre-mix" on my mixer while recording (and before without needing to use the RME software mixer). hmmm
Hi - my latest on the Korg is that there is much to love - very flexible, mute groups, tidy preamps, plenty of outputs (though no direct outputs). However Aux 2 has developed some distortion and I haven't nailed down the cause yet, but of course it is out of warranty. And the big switch on/off thump annoys me. Ta like, ppm6.
Both prove to be fantastic tools. I’ve recorded orchestra and chorus and found the wide cardioid a wonderful solution for a chorus set up behind a large orchestra. Of course I prefer spaced Omnis on the orchestra. Really need to get my hand on Gefell sdc mics.
Thanks - I love the Gefell mics sdc and ldc! I'm looking forward to trying the new Gefell 400 series which are sized to be competitive with the Schoeps mics especially for location work. These 300 series mics are very, very good! Ta like, ppm6.
Small diaphragm mics imo almost always win out. There’s a wonderful core and focus to the sound that sounds more natural. The low end is almost always superior as well. I definitely prefer my Schoeps to the Neumann KM180 series but ultimately I hear the benefits of sdc’s over large diaphragm’s in this presentation. Thank you.
Thanks for some thoughtful input. I have very much enjoyed schoeps mics when I have had them on loan, I just haven't got enough cash in the mic budget to spring for them. Ta like, ppm6.
I’ve found the Senny MKH-50 so good indoors and outdoors I’ve yet to bother with any kind of shotgun. Not sure the little DPA 2017 will best it.
The Sennheiser MKH-XX mics are top, top notch. Sad in a way that the 40 is no longer with us. I don't doubt the 50's quality at all. And you may well be right (I don't have a 50 here, but I loved the 60 I had on loan) but the 2017 is half the price...ish. I'm looking forward to the new Gefell 400 series - small Gefells. (yes i know i said the K word) Music and screen are from youtube to my sound bars. Will I be ok with sm58 and the 40db gain on the flow 8?
Thanks for a good question. I'm going to say yes. Remember you have 20dB of digital gain in the channel and in a noisy karaoke environment people don't mumble, at least not in my experience. I think you'll be fine. Do let me know what happens when you go live with it. Ta like, ppm6.

@@ppmtv-qh9qk that's great but it cost another 200-300 dollars. I was thinking about having both mics on XLR1 and 2 with gain at 40db and fader at unity. Then use 1/4 cable from monitor 1&2 and into 5 & 7 then adjust the gain from there as needed. sending 1&2 to monitor and only sending 5&7 to main output. at the cost of 2 1/4 cables.
That indeed is the idea of the gain hack - route the signal back in. But you might not need it if your singers give you plenty of oomph! Let me know how this interesting project goes? Ta like, ppm6.
Thanks for sharing, much appreciated. I have the AKG SE300 B with CK91 capsule. I wonder if you have ever tried the AKG SE300 B with the CK98 shotgun capsule? and if so, how it compares to the Sennheiser MKH 416?
Hi - I have quite a few cheap gun mic videos and number 3 features the CK98. ua-cam.com/video/yXYuY4MMcVo/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/CzifhArohaM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/ql4_XVFWcBU/v-deo.html The 416 has several advantages. Size - it's shorter Noise - it's quieter Moisture - the 416 works on the RF principle and better resists moisture Sound - it sounds better to me but the difference isn't enough to get you sacked off the job Reputation - it's massive Having said all that a 416 is going to cost a fair bit more. And if you have an SE300 amplifier, well that's a flexible advantage. However I regularly see cheap options from A-T and AKG in gun mics and they have most of the advantages of the 416 but at half the price. Happy searching. Ta like, ppm6.
How does the C451 with a C1 compare to its predecessor the C28 Series using the same CK1 capsule or the CK28?
Sorry for the slow reply Jonathan. The answer is I don't know! What have you got in the cupboard at the moment? My experience with the 451 (CK1 capsule) is limited to the classic made in Austria mics from my BBC days. Very flat, very flexible - a lot of options - very reliable - terrible threads on the capsules, easy to cross thread. Truth is they were dogs body mics, we used them on everything and they got the job done. What the new ones are like I don't know but a second hand one is very likely to be very well used and I would be cautious. We didn't have any C28s, though we did have a couple of C12s that no one used. From what I see C28s are very expensive - can you still get the tubes? Again I would be cautious. Sorry I can't be of more help. Ta like, ppm6.
Gefell is south of Berlin (and Lepizig and Dresden), yes, but actually WEST of any of them, because if it were any farther East it would be in the Czech Republic, which kind of sticks into Germany at that point - Gefell is right by the "tip" of that bulge.
HI MVM - great geography. I quite fancy a visit to Gefell one day and good that it would be easy to pop over to the CR. I'm waiting impatiently for the new 400 series mics from Gefell..... Come on guys! Ta like, ppm6.
The KM184 imo is outclassed by the 480 and the Gefell offer a wonderful contrast while still sounding quite natural and balanced.
The Gefell is great and I'm looking forward to the 400 series due soon! I wonder if the 480 was just too expensive. It was at least £400 more than the 184 and that often swing the balance. Thanks for dropping by. Ta like, ppm6.
I’ll keep an eye on the new models from MG. I’ll tell you, that AKG 480 is IMO right up there with Schoeps Colette, Sennheiser MKH & DPA 4000. Just an outstanding product that seemed to be overlooked for orchestral, keyboards, percussion, & symphonic instrumental studio work. When they pop up on eBay, they seem to go under $600, so I’d say they’re a bargain.
I agree - I have a 480 and a 460 - now there was talk of the 460 having a problem in the bass, transformer? I can't remember but the 480 is a beast - my main complaint is I can't find a 63 hypercardioid capsule and nor can all the other 480/460 guys! Ta like, ppm6.
The AKG blueline does surprisingly well here.

What would you put in your cupboard, Umt70s or m930?
Sound question, but not one I can answer. I haven't had a go on the UMT70s - though all the vibes are good. I love the M930, it really hurt to send it back! I don't think you can go wrong with it, it is a jewel and a bargain at the price. Having said that I I also love the OC818 - I just think it is taking the 414 story to another level. Would it be greedy to have a UMT70s and an m930? I can but dream. Ta like, ppm6.
KSM 27 sounds fabulous. I think it can do the job that any other Mic can do .and?any differences between that and other more expensive mics can easily be equalized.

Ive used AKG C480B mics for years now. We have 3 of them for multiple mic setups for interior and exterior. The price point and performance meant we have multiples of these and we use the CK69 instead of the go to MK416. Love the sound and low noise floor is amazing. We have CK61 and Ck63 capsules too as well as several A61 90 degree adapters. In addition we have just sourced 4x VR61 extensions and restored them for use with C460 mic pre's which also run our Ck3x and Ck1x mic capsules with hot wires, similar to Schoeps. All our mics are now AKG from 4x C214 studio mics and 4x AKG c1000s MKIV for interviews with built in phantom power if required. We use our AKG mics for many productions for Broadcast, features, corporate, radio, podcasts and studio work. We have used many other brands including recently we tried Neumann TLM103 which we expected to be AKG C214 killer. It wasn't. It was hyper sensitive and needed EQ'ing and sent it back. The C214's will be staying. When we have sound ops on a shoot using our AKG mics, especially the C480B's, they are blown away and often ditch their mix pre and go straight into the recorder. I know the BBC and other broadcasters use the C480B mics and were recommended by their sound supervisor. Our AKG mic family are what we call 'mics for life'. Interesting video, thank you.
Thanks for such a comprehensive breakdown of your AKG kit. Here in Wales the BBC is pretty much all Neumann in the radio studios - TLM 103s. I have a couple of 414s but not a C214 - is a C214 a cardioid only version of the 414? I do love the 480 CK69 combination though it is physically more challenging than a 416. I have a CK61 but I really want a CK63 but they are very, very hard to come by! I envy you the VR61s - the only ones I have seen for sale have been well used and abused. Any way great to see a bit of love for AKG, keep up the good work. Ta like, ppm6.

Hi - now that's a great question. I thought I'd deploy the Dynacaster as a live vocal mic in my local church and it's been doing a champion job for the last year. And the flexibility of the extra gain for quieter vocalists is a boon. So I say - all good here! Ta like, ppm6.

Hi Timothy - I agree that the MK4 is a great sounding mic and a little overlooked. NT1 A was the first mic I got for home use, it was a wee bit toppy for me when it came to audiobook work, I had thought of changing the capsule after seeing people put in K47 diaphragms? It didn't happen. But then I got the NT1, a newer model, and a DBS286S, the combination of which much reduced the editing of sibilants etc. I don't do anything much professionally these days but mess about with my guitars and a pair of Røde M5s which are fun.
Thank David - and thanks for the reminder of the A! which I clean forgot. The Jim Williams mod was replacing capacitors on the circuit board but when I looked at mine they seemed to have a varnish or sealant over them which made me reluctant to try. I'm still on the look out for an M5 as I have heard good things about them. Thanks for dropping by. ppm6.
So interesting to hear confirmation of my feelings about the Blueline series. It’s as though they sound like nothing. I’ve had 2 pair for well over 25yrs with Omni, hyperC, & cardiod capsules. When comparing them with other mics, they tend to lose out because they just don’t have much personality or coloration. Ultimately, I guess that’s why I end up utilizing them quite a bit, especially in symphonic settings, live chamber, or jazz musical settings. I find them ultimately to be very neutral and true without adding anything extra that you need to spend time in post taming. My Schoeps get used for creating that magical atmospheric quality, but the AKG blueline work very well especially if I plan on adding reverb or other efx.
Thanks for stopping by. That's a really interesting take on the Bluelines! And high praise when you have Schoeps in your kit! I'm guessing yours are made in Austria - I have a couple of later bodies and the finish isn't as good. I also have some of the personal mics but haven't used them in many a year. Must give them a try! Do you make much use of the omnis in your symphonic gigs? Ta like, ppm6.
My biggest reservation with contemporary Gefell mics is that no one will repair them! In order to get them fixed you must ship them to Germany and the process takes 6 months+ I am currently awaiting the return of my M300
Hi Scoot, I'm sorry to hear that and it is a very fair point. With cheaper mics you might just accept that repair isn't a viable option but that's not the case with Gefell. I hope you get your M300 back soon. Can I ask was it a part failure in the mic itself? Ta like, ppm6.
@@ppmtv-qh9qk not sure - I was getting a HF ‘whine’ sound, no matter what gear I used it with and whichever space I was in. I’ve only been waiting 2 months, and I think it JUST recently made it to Germany. But I’ve been told by Gefell it will take no less than 6 months
I asked John at Sound-Link the UK distributors and he said service could be slow. From the US they aggregate repairs to minimise customs costs etc and that process takes time. I hope you get the M300 back soon, it is a mic that is hard to be without. Very, very good indeed. Ta like, ppm6.
