  • Evening is a deeply emotional film that illuminates the timeless love which binds mother and daughter -- seen through the prism of one mother's life as it crests with optimism, navigates a turning point, and ebbs to its close. Two pairs of real-life mothers and daughters -- Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson, and Meryl Streep and Mamie Gummer -- portray, respectively, a mother and her daughter and the mother's best friend at different stages in life.

Overcome by the power of memory, Ann Lord (Ms. Redgrave) reveals a long-held secret to her concerned daughters; Constance (Ms. Richardson), a content wife and mother, and Nina (Toni Collette), a restless single woman. Both are bedside when Ann calls out for the man she loved more than any other.

But who is this "Harris," wonder her daughters, and what is he to our mother? While Constance and Nina try to take stock of Ann's life and their own lives, their mother is tended to by a night nurse (Eileen Atkins) as she journeys in her mind back to a summer weekend some fifty years ago, when she was Ann Grant (Claire Danes)...

...a young woman who has come from New York City to be maid of honor at the high-society Newport wedding of her dearest friend from college, Lila Wittenborn (Ms. Gummer). The bride-to-be is jittery, and turns to her maid of honor rather than her own mother (Glenn Close) for support. Ann stays close to her friend, yet is even closer to Lila's irrepressible brother Buddy (Hugh Dancy).

Unexpected feelings surge forth once Ann meets wedding guest Harris Arden (Patrick Wilson), a lifelong friend and intimate of the Wittenborn family. Ann's love for Harris will change her life, and those of her daughters, forever.

I thought the writing style for the book was awful, so I'm so glad they made a movie for it. I just saw it last night, and it was great. Not the happiest of movies, but it really showed the depth of the character of Ann, how there was this whole part of her life her daughters knew nothing about.

Meryl Streep's daughter plays the younger version of Meryl Streep's character. I really should watch this movie.

I think this film didnt do so well because ultimately the american audience is one that wants to be swept away by a great love story or a love story that is ultimately tragic (titanic, the notebook etc). Evening really doesnt give us a dramatic ending or an over the moon romantic conclusion it simply gives us an END. The novel by Susan Minot expresses incredibly nihilistic views and the films purpose is to open a view to a not so common perspective on life and its meaning. It is a masterpiece.

I revisit the book and the movie all the time. Hell the trailer even brings me to tears. Meryl Streeps' character I think is the voice of the book. "In the end so much of it turns out not to matter." If that line alone looking back on the film as you've seen it to its conclusion doesn't shake you I don't know what to say! I agree this film is one of those treasures

I’m crying now because it’s one of my top 10 favorite films. It’s sensibility and gentle but solid messages touch my heart and remind me of how fragile and precious life truly is. If only we remembered that our youth will end and so will this life. We must take chances and risks in order to find true joy and happiness. I’m glad you get it.
You clearly have so much depth to you. Rare these days I feel. Bless you.

I just finished watching "Terms of Endearment " and the sequal to it "Evening Star". Also a gem. They don't make movies like them anymore. It's what I call dramedy. It's funny with some drama in it. Only 120 views and I am the only one that made a comment. Did anyone ever hear of those movies. Boy how time flies.

Yes, I guess everyone has their own opinions on writing style. I had a problem with the "he said, she said, they said." It seems like every line ended with "said," which I found incredibly distracting. Of course, I was reading this book aloud to my mother who also found it clunky, but sometimes reading aloud can skew things a bit. Anyhow, it was a best seller, so I'm possibly in the minority here. I'm writing a book as well, so I wish you the best in your writing.

i agree that the "he said, she said, they said" was a bit fifth grader, but the way she describes everything, people, ann's surrounding and how she talks is just genius. there was no better way in my opinion. especially how she introduces harris arden as the "sunglasses man" for a hint of mystery in his character and things to come.

if you /really/ want to read an excellent book with thought to it, read mrs. dalloway by virginia woolf, she's my fav author although i'm not big in reading---it must put an impression on me somehow before i read. anyways, she's excellent and the way she writes is a bit confusing, but you'll figure it out. she puts great depth in the characters in that book, moreso than susan minot in evening.

Very Good movie - and a slight brag
I got to see Natasha and Venessa to gather in 1985 live west end show
Chekhov “ The Seagall” with Jonathan Pryce.
First time they ever appeared live on stage to-gather
Friends didn’t want to see that and went to something else , the music man or something.
But I knew this was a once in a life time event and it was and sooo glad I got to see these 2 legendary actresses together live!
