In the fall of 2018, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Steve Perry made his long-awaited return with the release of "Traces", the legendary musician’s first new album in 25 years. The album’s personal expression of love, inspiration and renewal resonated with both critics and fans around the world, thrilled to have their ‘voice of a generation’ making new music once again.
Now, on "Traces (Alternative Versions & Sketches)", Perry revisits several of his favorite tracks, stripping away the grand production touches, taking the songs down to their essence. Presented acoustic and raw, (including some in sketch form) tracks like “Sun Shines Gray,” “No Erasin’,” “No More Cryin’,” and “Most Of All” take on new and richer meaning. In this setting, Perry’s iconic soulful voice glides out-front vibrant, clear and warm while the lyrics take on greater significance as well, even more intimate than before.

Steve Perry IS Journey. The voice can’t be replaced, but any guitar or drum set or piano can be.
I disagree with the second part of your comment, totally false.
@@rosettalauro3593 What I mean is that somebody who plays an instrument well enough can easily replicate somebody else in a recording and you wouldn’t even be able to tell as long as as they use the same technique. Nobody can replicate steve perry, no matter how well they can sing. His voice is what made the band what it is, and he’s the only reason they got as far as they did. Some musicians who play instruments are more creative and have had better success by utilizing their talent and creativity in songmakig, which is I’m guessing why you would disagree, but I’m just referring to the performance of a song itself. Journey did just fine and sounded exactly the same when they switched up their musicians decades ago, but all changed when steve perry was gone. That’s why I said what I did, but I respectfully disagree about the second part.

But talented and experienced musicians also develop unique voices through personal playing style and skill. In the case of Journey that’s best demonstrated by Neil Schon, who’s got a very distinctive style, it’s his voice. Really it’s Journey’s voice, since it’s his band more than anyone else. Not a Steve Perry criticism, just (musician) facts. You are right that it’s easier to copy an instrumental part, but they are impersonating the musician the same way Arnel impersonates Steve Perry.

I dont really know if you read the comments the fans leave for you. But if you by chance do read any of them, I hope you hear one thing. Steve, please dont explain the way you sing. Of course your voice is not the same as when you were in your 20's, or 30's even. But it's still you giving what you have....and thank you for that. You have more soulfulness in your voice, to me and I'm a no one to you, I love the lower tones or whatever its called. Thank God your still singing, right? I was a 12 year old child when I first heard you singing, 1978. I was hooked then, I'm still hooked......and much older....lol.

My kids think I am obsessed. I would have to agree. I am so very over the moon with your return to us. For pretty much my entire life, I have listened to you. (introduced to Journey in 1979, I was 5). You carried me through some seriously dark rough times in my life. I could always count on your music to reach me and I just felt good with your voice around me. Your music, your voice was a safe place for me to go hide within. I dont know if you know just how much you mean to so many of us. I just want to say Thank you, for a life time of amazing music that has been so inspirational to me!!
