  • This glider was transformed from a broken ASW-27 into a beautiful jet powered self-launch sailplane. The glider has two RC jet engines. The design and details are as fascinating as watching it launch

That was the loudest, slowest takeoff roll I've ever seen

I thought this was a Jonker at first. (And haven’t seen any of the jet sustainers rated for self launch yet)… Then I found your ground school video. This is very cool. Thank you for sharing.

That pilot must be still flying for Aerosucre. Talk about delayed ground effect! Thank you!

What motor you’re using? What kv?

Very cool. Seemed a bit slow on the roll. Was he carrying ballast?

The ship was dry but the engines add some ballast. Note that lift off happens and then the ship fly's in the ground effect before pulling up.

I guess I am just old-fashioned but if it has an engine is it *really* a glider? ;)

(Late IK) this is still a sailplane, the same way sailboats are still sailboats even though they have propellers. This is still a glider because this jet doesn’t fly the plane the entire time, the engine is for increased range, and self launch. Not for flying the entire time, which is why it retracts

Which climbing speed is achievable with these two RC-Jet-engines?

      1-2 m/s

      2.6 m/s or 500 - 550 feet / minute. It's on other video about build.

Did someone with an aeronautical engineering background put the engine on or can you do it yourself?

Yes, the entire repair of the broken fuselage and the design and installation of the dual jet system was done by Chris Esselstyn. He has A&P IA and a lifelong background in aviation, is also a talented Kit airplane builder.
