Fun fact: The narrator in Icewind Dale is David Ogden Stiers who also played Charles Emerson Winchester III in the T.V show M*A*S*H.
Not so fun Fact: Sadly he passed away March 3, 2018.
Loved those games back in the day, and the opening narrations of both really bring back the nostalgia. Thankfully GoG has the original version, enjoying that a lot :). The Bard moment with the spirit in the starting town was awesome. I even did a bit of playing with Heart of Fury from the start mode, which is actually a lot of fun. HoF unlocks some interesting enchanted weapons as well. While they weren't as mechanically innovative as BG 1 and 2 (though IWD 2 did have 3rd edition), I always felt a stronger sense of place and setting in the areas I was traveling through in Icewind Dale. It really felt like you were trekking through the frigid north.
That intro, such nostalgia.
Icewind Dale 2 isn't the best, but it holds a special place in my heart because it's the first cRPG I managed to complete. Up until then I was too young and dumb to understand what I had to do. Which apparently was save scum until the enemy wizard failed my Slay Living's fort save.
You know, I finally got the vanilla version of Icewind Dale 2 to look as good as it can to the likes of the first game's Enhanced Edition from a couple of mods. I hope the unofficial Enhanced Edition for IWD2 that is in the works and was in BETA last year comes out someday soon because it is the last Infinity Engine game I have yet to finish.
Loved the narration in the BG and Icewind Dale games. The music in IWD was perfect.
I remember the music as awesome!
Glad you are in the process of reviewing this as I'm currently playing it for the first time. Already finished the main game, going for the expansion currently :)
Hundreds of hours spent on this game. My very first cRPG I've played. The music, the voice actors, the atmosphere. I dream of a day when a new cRPG games comes out, that's going to have a great story like BG2 has, the look and the feel of a modern cRPG (Dragon Age Origins) as well as great combat mechanics (Pillars of Eternity). What they did to BG3 i purely blasphemy. We need something in the Forgotten Realms world.
Icewind Dale 2 remaster was finally released by the red chimera group, a team of modders and it is amazing!!!!
from my memory, I liked this game over Baldurs Gate but both of the games were great for their time.
Loved this game almost as much as Baldur's gate. I currently using it and IWD 2 as the basis of a DND campaign. I always had to cheat download EE keeper because there were no magic stores to get spells for the mage.
I really hope the people / someone over at Gibberlings 3 some day finishes an "IWD in EET" mod, so one could play through BG1, Siege of Dragonspear, IWD and BG2 with the same character.
OH, and for those unaware, EET or Enhanced Edition Trilogy is a mod that merges BG1, SoD and BG2 into one client, which is just insanely cool, because it allows for unified modding of both games.
I gotta admit, I really enjoyed Baldur's Gate when it came out, and I got most of the way through BG2 and Torment before I lost my saves due to computer problems, but I never even tried Icewind Dale until last year when I started and finished the Enhanced Edition.
I remember the game as being touted primarily about combat (and there is PLENTY of combat in it) but it did not feel unusually combat heavy to me relative to the Pillars of Eternity games. On top of that, the story felt pretty solid despite the storyline not being built around your characters. It's an adventure and your party happened to be in the right place at the right time to get involved in it. Based on your overview and having never played the "Unenhanced" version, I wonder how much of this is due to the Enhanced Edition additions...
In short, combat was a PART of the Infinity Engine games, just not anywhere closer to my FAVORITE part and I really expected to not like Icewind Dale very much do to the reputed combat focus of the game. I was pleasantly surprised.
When i played this game as small kid. I got stuck in that cave location you filmed this video in. And did not progress the story until i picked it up when i was older xD
Always doged IWD series. Like the setting and mood of the series, but It always seemed too battle heavy for me. Finally convinced myself that, as a future game-designer, I should play it for the sake of aducation and to "know my stuff". And it was fun expirience. Also want to add that while the story might look like the exuse to lead party from one location in to the other, it's has this warm cozyness of old-school AD&D module adventures.
I only seen Icewind Dale 1 in a magazine as a kid and couldn't have bought it anywhere. My first entry in a series was Icewind Dale 2. Such a shame old source files got lost, but I heard Red Chimera Group are going to try to make fan enhanced version anyway.
I'd love to see more IWD type content. I played it when it first came out. Love it on the Xbox. Forgot how into DnD I was until now.
oh yeah, infinity engine games. good stuff.
Really looking forward to see your Icewind Dale review! :)
I only played this game as the enhanced edition and really enjoyed it, love making a full party, in some ways I prefer it to Baldur's Gate and in other ways I prefer Baldur's Gate, love both
I have them on CD ROM. Haven’t played in over 20 years. I might boo them back up.
This game has always been a mystery to me. I always thought that the combat in Baldurs Gate is the tedious part, in between the interesting parts. Why would I want to play a game which focuses on combat? But I suspect I'm missing something. If I remember correctly Ice Wind Dale 2 uses 3.0 ruleset, so maybe that would fit me better.
The same. You take out the best parts of a game like Baldurs Gate (deeper story, character development) and focus on the worst part (ADnD computer combat).
I hated combat in Torment, there was too mich of it for how tedious it was.
In newer cRPGs like Pathfinder WITR or BG3 the combat is enjoyable but in the old classics are horrible for me.
I bought this game about a year ago, and got stuck in the area where you have to fix an astrolabe. No matter where I went or what I picked up, that damn ghost would only keep saying "Astrolabe whirls, twirls." Found out it was a game breaking bug and just quit.
Oof
Was kinda hoping you would stream the run.
It's a bit difficult to steam entire runs, as there is only a couple days a week I can really stream uninterrupted, plus narrating every step of something I'm actively working my way through can be rough
I played IWD and beat it several times when I was younger, since enhanced edition I just never finish it. Maybe I just need more story in my game these days, but while I like the pacing of early, and part of late Icewind Dale, there is a dungeon in the middle, the largest one, that is just a slog. There is almost no dialogue, as you go further and further. While I recall there is a story mode, here the combat feels almost the entire point of this game. I do think the Story overall is good, but the game as whole does drag in parts.
IWD2 being unrecoverable source code feels very on brand after close to 2 decades playing magic online 😂

Could never finish Ice Wind Dale. What I like the least about the old classics is the combat so a game which focuses si strongly on this aspect was definitely not fir me.
Damn how unbalanced it is , i was trying it from long time but always got wiped out today i decreased the difficulty to very easy and now m not even getting hurt in battle 🤔🤔🤔🤔
