A well paced and nicely explained video, thanks for taking the time to make this. I loved this game when I originally played it all those years ago. I've bought the Enhanced Edition to play through again, really looking forward to diving back into the excellent story!

I’ve got to say, I have been watching a lot of your videos lately Mortum and on top of a few other reasons your videos and especially your passion for CRPGS has really kicked my journey into them down a Rabbit hole, im playing 4 different ones at once (including this)

Hah, found the review :) It's great to see that you've covered PS:T! It's my favourite CRPG of all times, I don't know how many times I've played through it just to immerse myself in the story again.
The point you make about customising your character is absolutely true; particularly the options to lie or tell the truth have always stood out in my mind as unique and a great way to make the Nameless One yours. I would love to see this implemented in more games!
My favourite moment besides for Ravel's question is when you meet O of the divine alphabet; the shoutout to that scene in Tides of Numenera was pretty fun too.
Anyways, I kinda see the game as pretty philosophical. Dealing with questions of how to live your life, how actions and intentions can change one's path, and the power of belief. I really need to DM a campaign in that setting again... but, I am rambling :)
Have you ever managed to get Adahn to materialise?

A truly wonderful game. My only issues are that there's not much replayability and that one of the joinable NPCs appears very late and another is a tedious grind to get. Otherwise an outstanding game and still playable today.

@@Biouke I'm pretty sure you can scale the font with the remastered edition. The old games were obviously not built for the resolutions we have nowadays so that's the problem if you play it in the native font size.

    • @Biouke
      @Biouke Рік тому +3

@@Revanchist There's some of that but really the font itself is a problem. Lengthy dialogues in Times New Roman 12px was not ideal to read on a screen. That and the TTRPG feel of big exposition dumps by the narrator... Compared to Bloodlines with its big sans serif font and spoken dialogue that felt more natural or ShadowRun and Disco Elysium text paragraphs on the side of the screen it's night and day.
I mean, I love reading so it's no big deal and back in the day I didn't care much, but in retrospect the bottom box of text with a sophisticated font really is a chore to go through.

For me this is still the better written, with better narrative, videogame of all times. I've played most of the rpgs, old and modern, classic and japanese, but Planescape is still unmatched. You can see it's written by a person with a literature degree (I don't mean to bash anyone, I'm just stating a fact. That doesn't mean other writers without a degree might not be as good). Of course it's old, it comes with its limits and such, it's rather a heavy game, probably half way between a book and a rpg for nowadays standards. It literally drowns you in text all the time, and for our ADHD-packed times that is definitely an issue.
This said, I've never found a better story with a better involvement for the player than this.

The writing is what makes it timeless. Story, characters in the party, the unraveling of the plot in both present and past, different ways to do quests - it all stands up to time.
I've never played D&D, so in 20 years and multiple playthroughs I've never quite figured out the combat system and certain stats, which in turn made combat, usage of items and spells very tedious and frustrating - and none of it didn't matter to me anyway, this is one of the best games I've ever played and can replay forever.

Something interesting I wish more games copied is just how perfect the DnD alignment system (Chaos-Law, Evil-Good, Neutral) is for roleplay in a video game. Conversation trees in games have to be limited and can only give a player around 3 responses to a situation, but thanks to the 3x3 chart they feel like meaningful character choices. For example when your characters first learns about debt slavery they may have a reaction like: "It's a good way to pay their debt to society" (lawful) "Slavery is always wrong" (good) or "I wonder if I could buy someone?" (evil) And while it's just a fun personality survey for the most part, seeing where your actions put you by the end of the game, there are some items like the Deva's sword that onyl Lawful Good players can use, and party NPCs' attitude changes based on how you treat them.

I loved this game, played it through with every character type when it first released and 100% all 3 play through's. I have tried it again since then and couldn't get back into it

Yeah I bought this not too long after it came out and was pretty amazing. I could never beat it though because it was so different from all the other games I'd played. I cut my teeth on things like Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy and the Gold Box games. Combat was the main focus so I played it like that, killing everything, and that can be a bad time. I bought it off GoG three years ago and have yet to boot it up but as soon as I'm done with GTA San Andreas which I never got to beat back in the day either this is my next one.

I have never played this game myself. But others I know rave about the story as well. One of my friends who runs d&d is a huge Planescape fan. I've played in the setting a number of times. It's one of my favorite d&d settings. Prolly second only to Forgotten realms in my opinion.

A lot of dialogue serves no purpose? Fluff? If you cut non-essential content from a book It would most often be a very short book

i really wish i watched this before i wasted my $10 on steam... Im fine with a story and reading, but it has to be a fun game to play and for me thats combat and a challenge. BG 1 and 2 and IWD... amazing. This... meh... not my tea and i played about 15 hours into it and just lost interest about into the 6ht hour.

First played it when I was 10 or so... Didn't understand a lot of stuff this game offers. But I've enjoyed it greatly nonetheless and I replayed it couple times in the 14 years since my first time. Every playthrough I realize something new I missed on the previous ones. A gem of a game

I lucked out on what my first CRPGs were and they set a high bar standard that many games that followed didn't reach. I played three CRPGs as they were released: Fallout 1, Baldur's Gate 1 and Planescape: Torment. All three of those games are solid A+ when it comes to world building and setting and only Planescape: Torment didn't have great combat to go along with such superb settings.
PT reminds quite a bit of Elden Ring in that they are both incredibly inscrutable, mysterious and mesmerizing, especially at their start. PT does a little bit of hand holding but for the most part you have little information about your PC including the fact you can change your class from fighter to a thief or wizard!! All the the NPCs that can join your party are also incredibly unique.
Great review and anybody who hasn't played this one but likes games that deliver the unexpected or unique realities this is a game for you. Ignore the rough combat. Seriously, who doesn't want top lay an immortal with some mysterious connection to Sigil, the city of infinite doors that lead to infinite places.

Oh what a gem I just grabbed this game and bg1&2 and icewindale as well got them all for such a steal on sale for only 9$each and it is the full bg1&2 with all dlcs so like an extra 6 stories to play if u dont like one skip it lol. I went n loaded it up just to see if it was going to be anything like torment on xbox cuz I can't figure out how to do literally anything in that game thr button mapping was bugged last I played so idk but ya it turned me off cuz I assumed that these old games would have more issues like this but I was wrong it was that game which was flawed and very different from this but it was on sale very cheap n it also wouldn't have made this deal seem so sweet lol I thought they were same dev big mistake it turned me off these games until now recently I just got into it I had to watch a tutorial on the tutorial lmao a walkthrough and then it clicked I finally know how most things work in this game at least enough to play it on story mode which is easy then the hardest part is inventory management and can I trust this guy who just joined my party better not give them any good gear as I well know in the dragon age series which honestly feels like a true spiritual successor or sequel to this just minus the license of dnd which idk may have made those games better depth wise but not story er game play at the cost of the simplicity n accessibility factor so idk but I just wish they'd kept it as deep as origins was since da2 sucked and inquisition I have yet to finish cuz I'm stuck even on easy mode cuz they never learned how to make the difficulty but balanced! But I think it's story is actually connected to bg1&2 so far cuz it mentions several things like chanting and the warden's idk gorion secrets yet I'm just now arriving in what's it called the friendly arm in. (These games make me actually remember such things n not just go ok go to the blah blah in blah town n talk to blah get blah and boring idc about made up name and then this game goes and forces us to learn or we'll end up lost! Which im sure I will but idk so far I'm loving it so much almost as much as elden ring where idk which ome to play with my time! That's how good these are once u commit to learning them n don't leave it in backlog anyway I digress. )
It was fascinating and hilarious to play this intro just out of curiosity about if I'd like the story but it's so weird lmao and the skull part n then the tattoo on my back lmao it was wordy no wonder my back hurts so bad lolol is where I ended up stopping myself cuz I wanted to play more like that pulled me right in to this world im invested n now im hoping that I can create a character I like enough to finish them in order and see if I can't progress a character from bg1 to as far as that'll let me lol. But it's a ton of fun the learning curve is so worth it and I'm omthr switch Nintendo versions idk if they're best thr my favorite place to play but idk maybe pc idk I tried getting into dragon quest on mobile bit it's not pulling me in I got the 1st 3 games n the turn based is so played out from pokemon n other games that use it final fantasy etc this's how turn base should be but anyway I can't gush enough about this game im not 15m into the story of and only a few hrs into bg1 on day 3 still out side the arm inn lol killing bandits n strangers who attack n my inventory is full n idk what items are priority lol. ..

Oh ya lmao 1 least thing that happened to me was I found a magic/ cursed girdle of gender confusion lmao it made my character a transvestite who was born a man but has a man's voice and a womans body now im hot lmao and elven lolol is things like that hilarious the back tattoo the talking skeleton lol I didn't expect it to be so good humor n story with these graphics like diablo 2 lmao wtf no wonder these games were rated so well and I can see how many countless RPGs took sooo much from these game's n sone made it worse others better idk anyway im out
