    Great review! It rather upsets me when the D5600 is referred to as an "Entry Level' DSLR because, as you rightly point out, this camera can hold it's own with so-called "professional' level cameras. This camera with a good lens is awesome. I recently bought the Nikon 70-300mm lens and the results with the D5600 are stunning. I'm not sure what anyone would want to use a heavy, expensive full frame when this is so good. JMHO.

    • @osasenoma-owens5072
      @osasenoma-owens5072 6 років тому +10

      Craig Cameron I feel exactly the same way! It's far from being an entry-level camera. I get such professional results with my D5500, and the low light performance is amazing too!

    • @itsuranus9479
      @itsuranus9479 6 років тому +9

      The primary reasons to shoot full frame over DX are low-light capability and the wider images. Full frame images are more malleable in post-processing because you're able to crop a lot deeper without your pixels blowing up and losing sharpness. This is because DX cameras (cropped sensor cameras) change the focal length of a lens. A 35mm lens on a full frame camera is actually about a 55mm lens on a DX camera. An 85 is about 127, etc. This is actually good in situations where you need more zoom. You can cheat and use a shorter lens on a DX camera and it becomes a longer lens. However, the best lenses money can buy are full-frame lenses, which you can use on a DX camera, but they'll still be rendered at DX aspect ratios. So an excellent FX lens is often outperformed on a DX camera by a DX lens, but that same FX lens on an FX camera may be a better piece of glass that produces better results than every DX lens in existence. Also FX cameras often have certain features that aren't present on DX bodies. Like dual card slots. The 5000 series only has one card slot, and having dual slots is pretty mandatory for a working professional. Especially if you're a wedding photographer. If one of those cards gets corrupted, you have a backup. If you only have one card, you've fucked the clients out of once-in-a-lifetime photos. The lack of a focus motor in-body is also really troubling and prevents you from getting the kind of range that you're afforded when you shoot Nikon. Nikon lenses from 30 years ago are some of the best lenses money can buy, but they won't autofocus on your body and when you're manually focusing every shot, you're missing shots.
      Overall, as a general rule of thumb, if you're a sports photographer, you absolutely need an FX camera. If you're a wildlife photographer, you definitely want one, but you can get by without one. If you're a portrait photographer, you really don't need one because you don't care about anything an FX camera does. (Wider images are of no importance to you) If you're a wedding photographer, you don't need one, but you definitely need a camera body with two card slots. If you're a real estate or architecture photographer, you need one, but a lot don't have one. (When you're shooting interiors or buildings, for real estate in particular, you want the rooms to look as large as possible and you want that wider shot that the DX body won't allow you) If you're a landscape photographer, you also need one, and want that wider shot.

      It's not "entry level". Entry level on DX line would be the D3500 at the moment but many people misspeak and call the entire DX line "entry level".

    I was looking forward to hearing about, and seeing the "amazing photo capabilities" of the D5600, but what I found was a lot of comparisons of the 5600 to the 7200, which tends to understate the capabilities of the 5600. The 5xxx series has been an excellent, less expensive, smaller, lighter alternative to the 7xxx series, and until the D500 and D7500 were the only Nikon APS-C bodies on which an articulating, or touch-enabled LCD was mounted. The 7200 lacks some of the connectivity/social media advantages the 5600 has, and the 5600 captures equivalent images in 'most' lighting situations. Since the target user of this DSLR is relatively new to digital photography it's unlikely they'll have legacy glass which requires a focusing motor, and why would they go for such lenses given the performance of the new generation of AF-P lenses, particularly for video?

      The only downside is that terrible AF motor & af hunting, it's probably solved by a better video lens and an external mic. That adds to the cost though, might as well get an 80D

      @photofonz  6 років тому +2

      I have used several Tamron lenses in my career and am still a happy user of Tamron's 28-75mm f2.8 lens, unfortunately I have not used the 18-400mm but wouldn't mind owning this lens. According to many reviews, it is a fabulous versatile, general purpose lens for the price, capable of sharp images and even background blur to some degree. It can be the only lens you may want to take with you when traveling with minimal equipment is important. Yes, as the Tamron 18-400mm is a DX lens, it will work great on your Nikon D5600 and any other DX camera body.

    I was almost sure about the D5600 until I saw a comparison with the Canon T7i. There is about USD 100 difference, does it worth the 45 cross focus points vs the 9 of the Nikon?

      While it's hard for me to recommend a lens for someone else, as it depends on your budget and what type of photography you would like to do, but I'll give it a shot as to what I may do.
      For general purpose & travel, I would consider a Nikon 18-200mm. It gives me great range, is reasonably sharp and easy to travel with.
      For portraits, sports and photojournalism, I would use Nikon's 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. My second choice for portraits would be Nikon's 85mm f/1.4/1.8 prime lens. Another good choice would be a lens in the 24-70mm f/2.8 or 28-75mm f/2.8 lens. While these last few lenses are a bit expensive, consider it an investment. These are also FX lenses and can be used if you ever upgrade to a full frame camera body.

    Great video. Lots of good info. I love myD5600 but was a little hesitant to invest 800+ on some nice lenses I have been looking at. In your opinion would investing say $1600 in a couple nice lenses be a bad or good idea? Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is one and Sigma 150-600 is another. Thanks

    • @photofonz
      @photofonz  4 роки тому

      Thank you! I believe an investment in a good lens is a good idea. Looking back in my photo career, I was never sorry when I purchased quality equipment. That especially goes for lenses. Your lenses should outlast any camera body you are using and you will be able to use that lens on newer camera bodies as well.
      You have an interesting lens choice with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 & Sigma 150-600mm. The 150-600mm is suppose to be an excellent lens for bird/wildlife photography.
      Roman Kurywczak, who is a Sigma Pro and one hell of an outstanding photographer, uses this lens. You can see the video when he spoke at B&H's Optic 2016 here: ua-cam.com/video/58G-ttOw6PM/v-deo.html

    I was thinkin of this camera because 1080p60 and flip screen but I bought an used D7000 for 240€ then I added an original battery grip and old 50mm f1.8 e series manual lens. Is it really an improvement D5600 against D7000? It has small body, single command dial, not great material..

    • @itsuranus9479
      @itsuranus9479 6 років тому +1

      The D5600 is better than the D7000 in every way. The D7000 released at the same time the original D5000 did. There have been six iterations of the D5000 cameras since then, and Nikon is using completely different processors and sensors now. I doubt a well-used D7000 still has a lot of shutter life left, so I wouldn't concern myself too much with build materials. I have a D5200 that's been beaten half to death and is still working without fault.

      @photofonz  4 роки тому

      Both of these cameras are great models for the price and very similar in specs. I don't think you can go wrong with either brand as both Fuji and Nikon are two of my favorites. You would have to look at the specs and see what is important to you. If you are planning on going to a mirrorless system, then the XT-100 would be a good
      choice. Fuji has some outstanding X mount lenses that you can use if you ever wanted to upgrade to a more advanced Fuji body. Plus the X-T100 shoots 4K movies.
      However, the Nikon DSLR D5600 is no slouch either. It is also a great buy for the money. It has an amazing battery life of 820 shot's versus Fuji's 430. is a little better in high ISO setting, not to mention a choice of many outstanding lenses made by Nikon.

      Through practice, I have developed so much control that I stop worrying about settings and shoot like a professional in any event.
      Just do the homework and set the camera for the situation you are going to shoot just before leaving home.

      If it was me and for personal general use, along with the D5600, I would go for the 18-140mm. Better yet would be the 18-200mm or 18-300mm.
      While the 70-300mm is a superb lens and great for wildlife and some portraiture, it also gives you a nice telephoto range with Vibration Reduction. When using the 70-300mm lens with a crop sensor/ DX body like the D5600, keep in mind the field of view equivalency is 105-450mm, so to get the most out of this lens a more extensive knowledge of photography may be helpful.
      Once you gain more experience with photography and your equipment, you will know what other lenses you may need to give you the look and image quality you are after.
      So, in a nutshell, the 18-140mm lens would be a great start

    • @Dave_en
      @Dave_en 4 роки тому

      @@user-rz9lo8ls2e yes, 18-140 is the lens which will stay on your DSLR most of the time. Take 70-300 mm for wildlife. These two lenses will cover 95% of the usable focal range. Get a 10-20mm afp DX lens if you are into landscape or architectural photography. Getting a prime lens is optional for portraits or street photography. You may choose it later.

      While the Nikon D3400 is a decent camera body, if it were me I'd choose the D5600. The touch/screen screen alone is worth the additional cost. Plus, the D5600 has a microphone port, does Timelapse Recording and has a few other features the D3400 does not.
      If those things do not matter to you, the D3400 is still a decent camera body at an excellent price.

      I don't believe you will be disappointed with the Nikon D5600. Although it does not have the same build quality as some of the more expensive Nikons, it does have the potential for giving you great looking images along with amazing features. Look at the reviews and comments from Nikon, B&H photo & Best Buy and you can see why so many people rate this camera with high reviews.

      While the D7000 was an amazing camera when it was first introduced, back in Nov. 2010. It is outdated in certain features, yet still retains many advantages over the D5600. A few of them are:
      Build quality with Environmental Sealing, better battery life, faster shutter speed, AF motor, and of course 2 storage slots.
      On the other hand, the D5600 has an articulating touchscreen, higher max. ISO, and is more selfie friendly.

That is something I wish the D7200 had. However the D7200 has a weather sealed better built body, dual card slot, better screen resolution, longer battery life, faster max shutter speed, more focus points, better shutter life expectancy, internal AF motor. • @photofonz
      @photofonz  2 роки тому

      The D5600 is an "Entry Level" camera. Today, Nikon calls it "Advanced Entry Level". Can a beginner use the D5600? Sure, why put limitations on a beginner's camera of choice.
      Good camera gear helps the beginning enthusiast evolve to a more advanced level with minimal frustration.
      What it still boils down to is the gear doesn't matter as much as the photographer's knowledge and ability.
      As the video suggests, The Nikon DX format D5600 still offers great features that can yield professional quality images, especially with good lenses, at a bargain price.

The function is crippled and useless. They even discontinued the D5500 in fear of low sales of D5600 since consumers will get the same camera in heavily discounted price (D5500)
