    I was fortunate to see Vicki Sue perform at the OC Fair in Costa Mesa, CA, shortly before she passed away from cancer. She was sick but in high spirits and was wearing an orange and pink boa that she really whipped around. She was promoting 'House of Joy'. It was a memorable performance and was well received by the appreciative audience.

    I was out of the band by the end of 1977. In the mid 80s, I got back together with Vicki. She had been doing a lot of jingles in NYC around that time but had a bunch of new original tunes. We got a band together and started working with David Wolff (manager of Cindi Lauper). We even did a few gigs but nothing really came of it. I was in touch with Vicki off and on until her death. She was an amazing live vocalist.

    A disco classic back in 1976. Vicki Sue Robinson had so much energy singing on stage her signature hit ''Turn The Beat Around''. She received a grammy nomination for this song and huge chart success all over the world.#10 in US hot 100,#1 in disco charts #51 in UK .At the age of 46, Vicki Sue Robinson died of cancer at her Wilton, Connecticut home on April 27, 2000.R.I.P Vicki

      When disco became popular after '75, a lot of my white friends derided it as a gay kind of thing. And as far as the BeeGees were concerned, they were right. But when I heard Donna Summer or Vicky Sue Robinson sing, I thought "Man, these black and latino girls really enjoy sex. There's a straight dimension to disco that my white friends have no clue about". That's what this song brings back to mind for me.

    The 70's were amazing. All kinds of music alongside one another. James Taylor next to Led Zeppelin next to Stevie Wonder next to Vickie Sue Robinson. All on the charts together. All the artists respected one another even if their music and or race were different (because they all had to play instruments and sing). Racial barriers came down in music and in bands themselves.. This show shows that. We need more of this now.

    This is one of those songs which should never be remade. It can't be touched. Estefan can't compete with the vocal range Robinson has also.

    • @roglo06
      @roglo06 10 років тому +9

      You're wrong. While the original is always appreciated, Gloria Estefan's version made the song even more popular while introducing it to a whole new generation. My parents grew up with the original, I grew up with Gloria's version, which became a huge hit in the mid-90's. Both versions are appreciated by all generations. It may be disco, but it has a very dominate Latin pop rhythm, something that Gloria has been coined the Queen of for nearly 3 decades. Both legends in their own right.

    • @chatman2a
      @chatman2a 10 років тому +15

      roglo06 Sorry, but I agree with Sybil Tang. This original version by Ms. Robinson is simply untouchable. And it is even more dynamic in its live version, as displayed here. Although the version by Gloria Estefan (whom I absolutely adore, by the way) made the song more popular, popularity isn't tantamount to superiority. In the end, of course, we all have our own opinion, but in my own Vickie Sue Robinson's version can never be matched.

    • @Alvin276
      @Alvin276 9 років тому +7

      Sybil Tang I totally agree. To me, "remaking" hits and "sampling" the work of other artist reveals a true lack of creativity. Vickie Sue Robinson was genuine. She had a strong and real R&B tint to her style and I loved it. She reminds me of Teena Marie, who could also really "sing" in the R&B style and not "copy" it. Check out Vickie Sue's 'Daylight', which is my favorite of her's.

    It doesn't get any better than this!!!!! Outstanding live performance. Vicki and Wendy, two beautiful women in tempo and on time. This performance clearly shows why live music is so much better than the record. Vicki's "attack" on this song shows why NO ONE will ever perform it better than she does....ever. Saw the original broadcast in 1976 and loved it then and love it now.

      It's remarkable, how difficult this song is. There have been two notable remakes (Gloria Estefan and Laura Branigan), and neither was able to perform it in the same key, with the same high notes, and at the same tempo. Especially live. This performance is honestly amazing.

    I was the original guitarist with VSR band. The band here on the Midnight Special was Vicki's original touring band except for Joey Melotti on keys. George Pavlis was the first keyboard player for the VSR band but he quit the band before our fist trip to California. Joey took his spot in the band just before we did these TV shows. With George Pavlis on keys, we were actually a working band before we hooked up with Vicki in 1975.

    Songs from the Disco Era have been frequently overlooked as being cliched and trite. While there is some truth to that, this was a notable exception. Vicki Sue Robinson was a gifted singer, having worked on Broadway prior to her recording career. "Turn the Beat Around" may have been the perfect song for her: high energy, with emphasis on her vocal power. And her stage presentation was terrific-beautiful woman, with great dance moves, backed by a tight, hot band. One of the best of the Disco Era.

    We played live on the Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, and the Merv Griffin Show. On shows like American Bandstand and Soul Train, Vicki sang to tracks. On the Mike Douglas Show, the band actually played behind a curtain while Vicki sang on camera. By this time we were all union members of AFTRA and if they showed us on camera, they would have had to pay each of us TV & radio scale. It was the shows decision.

    The band was called "In the Blood" before we were with Vicki Sue. We played local gigs in CT doing some covers but mostly original jazz-fusion music. Vicki & Wendy were doing small gigs in NYC and Vicki was a folk artist (like her mom) playing acoustic guitar and singing. Warren and RCA records turned her into a disco artist.

    WOW WOW WOW!!! Really?? That was amazing. I had never seen this. I agree with some others here. Her version can't be touched. From her Broadway and film experience in Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar, her New York and Philly upbringing, and the ability to do Disco LIVE - which I have to say is no easy task - taking a studio based music and playing everything on stage. It is quite rare, and The Midnight Special did us all a disservice by placing her LAST toward the end credits! Her musical chops almost have a jazz element approach to this song. It just blows me away. What a gift she had. She spent much of her career under the radar, letting other people shine. But she was the ultimate star.

    We had just lost our bass player after doing some recording at RCA in NYC. Wendy Simmons (bass player) had been doing coffee house gigs around NYC with Vicki while she was recording the first album. In those days Vicki and Wendy were doing an acoustic duo kind of thing. When the VSR record was about to be released, Vicki and Wendy made a trip to Connecticut to meet with us about being her back-up band for gigs on the advice of her recording engineer, Al Garrison.

    VSR played Grad night at Disneyland in 1977. Seeing her sing this song was the highlight of high school graduation.

    This song has been my favorite since it first started to be listening on the radio. I'm a drummer and love the original VSR. The GE version is ok. But nothing better than the original. VSR R.I.P and thanks for a great PERFORMANCE . This is a CLASSIC from the 70's .

    Good Stuff. Really nothing like a beautiful woman in a satin evening gown and giant boa playing bass.

    Vicki Sue also sang a song called "Wonderland Of Love" on this appearance on The Midnight Special. It was also performed LIVE and was excellent. If someone has this performance of tape, can you please post it. Many thanks

      I agree, the original is better but I really thought Gloria did a great job with it, kind of like the Kinks, Girl you really got me going, then you hear that same exact song done by Van Halen and it's awesome also, and that song Get Ready by the Temp's, I've probably heard 5 version's from different bands and that song just out right PLAYS, thank you for your share, very Cool

    That is how the VSR band came together with Wendy on bass. Shortly after the Midnight Special show, we replaced Nacho as percussionist. If you get a chance to see the Don Kirshner's Rock Concert performance with VSR, you will see a different percussionist. We also did the Merv Griffin Show twice in 1976 but I understand that footage is lost.

    My grandfather was a executive for International Paper. Lived in a state for 2-3 years at a time. Turned out he forgot a car in storage for 20 years. So in 1999 I was 16 and handed a set of keys to a 1979 Buick Electra Limited coupe with 9900 miles. 403 V8 fully loaded. Including a Delco 8-Track Cb high delfy sound system in which this song was included in Buick 79' A little science a little magic 8-Track. Yup another advanced technology function was automatic teen contraception. Was fun punching it down when this tune came on. Time would stop front end up ass squats down. 35 to 100 in one grunt. Lol thanks for a memory

    Great voice, presence and grace. "Less is more" really applies here. She doesn't need to over do it, especially with the trust of the great musicians around her...
