The Django Festival All-Stars: NPR Music Field Recordings

- Every year for the last decade and a half, select groups of hot swing musicians have come from Europe to tour the U.S. The exact lineups change, but they all feature masters of the "gypsy jazz" - or jazz manouche - style pioneered by guitarist Django Reinhardt. In fact, they're billed under the banner of New York's Django Reinhardt Festival.
The Django Festival All-Stars perform acoustically, but they played an electrifying set near the end of the Newport Jazz Festival. Afterward, we asked them to stick around and perform one more tune, and though their flying-finger exercises left them properly winded, they had plenty left in the tank for this energetic performance. They chose the standard "Them There Eyes," and to paraphrase its lyrics: They sparkled, they bubbled, and they got up to a whole lot of trouble. --PATRICK JARENWATTANANON

I wish every tunnel I walked through had something like that going on in the middle of it.
Saw these guys in Albuquerque a week or so ago. Amazing musicians, humble, really got into the music, and occasionally they opened up talking to the audience; they're full of personality. It's great they play their own compositions most of the time instead of just playing Django tunes, but keep the hot gypsy tradition alive.
I saw them twice at Newport and they were standouts both years. Swing like this works much better outdoors than some of the other styles presented...
Next good Pixar movie should have these guys make the soundtrack. Extraordinary.
Saw these guys at the Rochester Jazz Festival a few weeks ago. They were INCREDIBLE!!! A real surprise and delight.
Add it to the bucket list!
