Even from this shots you can see the crew's love of the source material.
They filmed this is less time than it take to WATCH Peter Jackson's extended Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
"The Fabulous Journey of Mr. Bilbo Baggins. The Hobbit across the wild land of through the dark forest. Beyond the Misty Mountains there and back and again".
Man, that is the most isekai title i have ever seen, and is not even from Japan.
Not Isekai enough. There's no "reincarnation" or "another world" in the title.
These actors and crew were the band playing on a political Titanic. It's a masterpiece of spirit and heart. "The show must go on."
Really makes you question what other lost media could be found in other countries
When I was in high school in the late 80s, the local public access cable network let pretty much anyone film, edit, and air their own content (which no one watched). I had a friend who was a budding film maker, and he made a few films. His special effects were just about the same quality as the Soviet FotR; tldr a high school AV club in the 80s produced films of equal quality
Man that's a cool story even though the final product is far from good but gotta appreciate their effort and passion
**OUR** Rings
Gollum: My Precious
Bilbo: OUR PRECIOUS
Isn't it weird that the world is unearthing USSR media recently?
What else?
Kind of makes sense because of the tensions rn
@@Pataganja not objecting. Just find it weird that there's so much obscure media from that region.
@@glockenspiel266 considering the Bulgarian Treasure Planet animation got relevant before that, not sure if it is related.
The Russians must’ve dug too deep and too greedily into their archives…
This is so good, great delivery, it's crazy they pulled it off. :)
If I had to guess as to how they managed to have those kinds of visual effect without a budget, it's likely they had contributors who (willing or otherwise) gave their time to edit and some equipmemt that had some downtime for repairs or simply not actively being used.
Its pretty cool they managed to pull it off! Had to be a crazy time
This looks like the non-concert scenes from Frank Zappa's 200 Motels.
Always a good day when you upload.
Nine hours, no budget, and a script based on an abridged version of the book…yet these guys still managed to do more justice to Tolkein’s work than “Rings of Power”.
For what it is, and the time, I think it looks fine (kind of like the BBC Narnia movies). It reminds me a lot of when LOTR was very hippie-ish back in the 60s-80s. Mute it and put on Bo Hannson's LOTR album, it's a blast (pipeweed optional but recommended lol )
That album was used as the soundtrack to SVT's (Swedish state television) adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately it can only be viewed from Sweden, but here's a first impressions video containing clips from it: ua-cam.com/video/fbTQJoNZkGs/v-deo.html
I wish you’d do the lost staircase scene from POLTERGEIST. A small clip is in the trailer and this is it’s 40th anniversary!
Well, I know what I'm gonna go watch right now. Time to grab some vodka and have a fun Saturday night!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOU ARE A HERO!

Hey guys how is this lost I had this at my library I watched this all the time in Missouri
One little nitpick, that's not greenscreen. It's blue screen or black screen, semantics I know, but I believe greenscreen was first utilized with The Muppet Christmas Carol, a year after this. Also, it's amazing they included Tom Bombadil, not even the BBC radio series bothered with him!
That's the most interesting nitpick I've ever gotten. I didn't know The Muppet Christmas Carol was the first use of greenscreen.
@@AllThingsLost Yes, to be specific it was the scenes with the Ghost of Christmas Past, she was given that ethereal look by being placed in a tank full of vaseline that was in front of the greenscreen. As much as people bash the use of greenscreen, such screen effects like blue/black/green screens and chroma key have been common practice in any movie that needed big effects and have been used as far back as the early 30's. It was arguably more abused back then, as it was very common for driving scenes to be done with a fake car in front of a bluescreen, hence that one joke in Airplane.

@@UnicornFairy42 No, never even heard of it.
The quality of this looks like a movie my friends made in high school, but with a slightly higher budget than $0. And I don't make this comparison to mock it; I actually really enjoyed the movie my friends made. It was silly and stupid but just a ton of fun. This feels like that but they actually had enough money for a green screen.
Wait isn't the main character frodo and not bilbo?
hope these effects were a homage to Wizards !
fuck they just played this at a local theater recently with the balkshi version double feature. Missed this info
i know it’s outside of your wheelhouse but can you use your platform to talk about the destruction of Mesoamerican texts? not a lot of people know about the fact people in pre-contact America had books/codex’s and it would be nice for you to talk about delbrite cultural destruction.
Mike's covered historical lost media so I don't think it's too much of a reach to ask for. This would be a very interesting topic.
That is an outstanding topic suggestion. I'll see what I can do.
Now, cover the old Finnish Hobbit (Hobitit) from 1993. The Gollum scenes won't disappoint you 😂
It's gloriously awful
For anyone who is curious: ua-cam.com/video/2f9uJhmymYU/v-deo.html
This nagant m1895 was made by elves. Soviet elves.
Да-да, было дело 👍
How about a video about a video about lost color or 3d versions and scenes of lost media?
Least we know where light novels got the idea for long ass titles
Comrades of the Ring
Aquarium ( Åквариум) are a great band. Recommend everyone check them out!
@All Things Lost Have you ever seen Jim Henson’s Animal Jam?
Yes.
1:37 And I thought _Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack_ was pushing it for title length!
it feels like a fever dream
How about the swedes Version of the lord of the ring ake sagan om rigen (1971 svt) they made only two episode of it
This looks like such a good time...
Cinema Snob covered Russian The Hobbit
In Soviet Russia, the ring disappears on you.
Its always funny for me when for some bizarre reason, to russian equivalent letter Hh = Хх, they add K letter at the beginning, making it a step away from being gibberish like someone really wanted it to be arabic word or something lol
It has to do with French being the language of Russian elite for decades. French has no H sound, to they would KH instead of H when transcribing from Cyrrilic to Latin. Now why Russians/Ukrainains translate English/German H as G is still a mystery. I have not heard any real explaination for this.
Please cover more soviet lost media
7:29 that's a speed run of making a movie
I guarantee it is vaseline used in that effect. Something I was taught by a videographer
Even with Soviet censorship, the Soviet version’s of Hobbit and LOTR are pretty good. The only downside is it didn’t have the absolute *CHAD* of Dr. Livesy!
shut up my christ
It kinda did - the guy playing Gandalf is none other than Livesey's VA.
by 1990, there was no sensorship in USSR, to the point of showing straight up softcore porn on TV at night. crazy times. basically, Gorby ran the country into the ground. no laws were followed at that time.
The Soviet Version is good and all but it can't hold a candle to the Finnish Version, The Hobitit.
If hollywood films had half the love that went into this film, that would be beautful.
I think Brioke's captain caught Kestia, same thing Noland was trying to eradicate and Nami caught on Little Garden, at least I thought it was mentioned somewhere but maybe Im wrong
Oh hi there!
Oh hi there! 👋
I’d rather watch this movie than the new series
All Things Lost: This has the worst visual effects and green screen effects.

Count how many time folks here comment: Still better than the rings of power.
More like Premier of the Rings.

We really gotta stop flinging *subversive* around so much. Starting to become a crutch in dialogue and frankly too repetitive. So how about we only use it now when a twist or jab at the audience fails to land or people don't like. Since at this point the change of the word has become negative thanks to people like Rian Johnson, Kevin Smith, and pretty Disney and it's pets like Marvel and Star Wars. It's pretty much what everyone thinks when the word is used anyways.
No one thinks subversive is bad, what? If anything the usual response to a subversive plot is only received well or negatively depending on how well the plot was executed.
Tolkien explicitly stated his west vs east conflict wasn't an allegory to the real world at all, that intro is actual bullshit, c'mon man
Still leagues better than rings of power
I’d much prefer you made a version of this video without all the ham-fisted references to Cold Warrior stuff. We get it, you’re a “red blooded conservative American capitalist!”. The USSR dissolved in 1991, after 30 years you can give it a break.
Found the communist.
Maybe we’ll stop pointing out the collapse of Communism when Communists stop trying to make Communism work?
@@aaronreeve1414 The Soviet Union collapsed because a bunch of capitalism-loving liberals came to power and actively undermined the state, which is why all the post-soviet countries are run by capitalist oligarchs today.
@@aaronreeve1414 I wonder who has been preventing Communism from working at every step of the way?
