Great to see love for Tony Martin. Criminally underappreciated era. The Shining off The Eternal Idol has some of the best Iommi riffs ever. Looking forward to the box set supposedly coming out this year.
Great list, I really like TYR, Headless Cross and Eternal Idol. Very cool to see those. Albums I need to recollect. Heaven and Hell is such a banger. Great Ranking James.
Really refreshing to see a black sabbath ranking video where it's not just the 1st six albums in the top six! I'm with you about the tony martin era being underrated I only have cross purposes in my collection though personally vol 4 is my favourite with mob rules coming in 2nd great content as always james!
Excellent ranking video James, finnaly had the time to properly check it out. Massive discography, I think that "Sabotage" & "Never Say Die" are very underrated! My favorite Sabbath album would probably be "Master of Reality". 🤘 Good to see Headless Cross so high on your list. Also: 15:18 😂👍

Hi James!!! it's always cool to see other VC's member take on Sabbath's catalogue and nice to see you added Heaven & Hell to the list. When i started listening to music in the mid 80's Sabbath was not a "cool band" to listen, so i was kind of late to the party and the stuff they released in that decade. I think you're right about "13" i will listen to it again and also share your thoughts about "Born Again". Now what i really need to do is add the stuff they did with Tony Martin there're some killer songs and great riffs. cheers and be well
Cheers as always Cristian. Yeah I've never understood the dislike for Born Again, great album. The Heaven and Hell album definitely needs to be included.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on these albums James. It's a tough discography to rank as they have a lot of top quality albums, can't argue with your ranking. Ozzy is the classic voice you think of when it comes to Sabbath but Martin does an excellent job on the albums he features on and really enhances them and its a shame Gillan and Hughes only did one album apiece . My favourites are Headless Cross, Master of reality, dehumanizer, sabbath bloody sabbath and the first two Dio was on.
I'm still discovering Sabbath's discography. I never got really heavy into them , I've been a fan of the Ozzy/Dio years but my favorite album is actually The Headless Cross (heaven and hell is a close second...._for me) I think I'm gonna dive into born again tonight. I haven't heard it but I was told to avoid it many years ago. But I think now is time to give it a chance!
Months ago I ask you during your QnA video if you were going to do this and a Judas Priest ranking, and now you have, thank you good sir. Did not disappoint.
Oh wow I have literally just acquired the Black Box so am thinking that I’m gonna listen to them in your ranking order. There’s loads of Sabbath that I haven’t heard hence why I got this box set so this could be really interesting! 🤘 *rummaging for a pen and paper lol*
I got nothing from Tony Martin, they are very hard to get by. My personal favourite is Sabbath bloody Sabbath. I used to be hiding behind a sofa scared shit less but loved it. Great video sir 👏👍
Good morning Mr B love the ranking I do love a bit of Sabbath I've tried to get Headless cross many times Amazon take the piss with £12 postage lol any other suggestions were I can buy this?
Wow ain’t this ironic lol, just last night I looked on your channel to see if you had any Black Sabbath videos lol, hope your doing good though, great video
Interesting ranking, it's always interesting to hear other people's takes on the catalogue of bands you love. I personally would have Master of Reality as my favourite, followed by Sabotage. If i remember correctly, Bill is wearing his wife's tights on the cover of Sabotage. I may be in the minority but i have always preferred Mob Rules to Heaven & Hell.
A big and difficult discography to rank but was fun to do. Mob Rules is a beast of an album, Voodoo is my favourite song from that album. Thanks for watching and commenting 👌
Always good to see rankings of bands I like but have little of to get a feel what albums to look out for as I've only got the first 2 albums but I've recently ordered Eternal Idol which I like what I've sampled. Cheers mate. 🍻🤘🏻
I think if I were to rank these on a whim like this, it's probably gonna be: 1. Paranoid 2. Sabotage 3. Headless Cross 4. Dehumanizer 5. Mob Rules 6. Heaven & Hell 7. Black Sabbath 8. Tyr 9. Vol.4 10. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 11. Technical Ecstasy 12. Masters of Reality 13. Cross Purposes 14. Never Say Die Can't really speak on the rest because I'm either forgetting they exist, or haven't heard them in full... so I'm basing this on what I've been going back to the most since first hearing them. Absolutely love Tony Martin and Dio's eras as I'm sure you could tell with these rankings, such a phenomenal revolving door of vocalists they had.
Tony Martin era is definitely underrated. Aside from the generally poor Forbidden all his albums hold up really well a a collective body of work and his vocals are amazing.
Really great album ranking full of great opinions! My ranking : 1. Heaven and Hell 2. Master of Reality 3. Vol 4 4. Mob Rules 5. Sabotage 6. Paranoid 7. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 8. Headless Cross 9. Black Sabbath 10. Dehumanizer 11. TYR 12. Born Again 13. Eternal Idol 14. Devil You Know 15. Technical Ecstasy 16. Cross Purposes 17. Forbidden 18. Never Say Die 19. Seventh Star 20. 13
I Love The Devil You Know. A dark,HEAVY album. It is almost doom metal. Every track is absolutely great. And I agree with you,it is actually a Black Sabbath album,it would be a number one in my ranking.Number two would be The Headless Cross and number three- Eternal Idol.
Great list, here’s mine. 20. Forbidden 19. Never Say Die 18. Cross Purposes 17. 13 16. Technical Ecstasy 15. Seventh Star 14. Born Again 13. The Eternal Idol 12. Sabotage 11. Paranoid 10. Vol 4 9. Headless Cross 8. The Devil You Know 7. Tyr 6. Black Sabbath 5. Dehumanizer 4. Mob Rules 3. Master of Reality 2. Heaven and Hell 1. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Great video! To me the original Black Sabbath of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward will always be the best Black Sabbath! loved all their albums from their debut album in 1970 through to Technical Ecstasy in 1976, not keen on anything that followed. Volume 4 is probably my favourite Black Sabbath album.
Heaven & Hell and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath also my two favorites from the Dio and Ozzy albums. Curious, would you rank Eternal Idol higher when you consider the Ray Gillen demos, released as an official Sabbath album on the deluxe version in 2010? I believe they are spectacular, and the songs were much better suited to Gillen's vocals. Martin would sound excellent on the albums that followed, esp. Headless Cross.
@robertraymond6643 I've not actually heard the Gillen demo's. I really should give them a listen sometime. Headless Cross is a beast and the Tony Martin era is underrated. Thanks for watching and commenting
This is my current ranking, but I will say that Seventh Star may be moving up in the future. That album is pretty badass actually. 19. Born Again 18. Forbidden 17. Never Say Die 16. 13 15. Cross Purposes 14. Seventh Star 13. Vol. 4 12. Tyr 11. Sabotage 10. The Eternal Idol 9. Paranoid 8. Dehumanizer 7. Black Sabbath 6. Master of Reality 5. Technical Ecstasy 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Heaven and Hell 2. Headless Cross 1. Mob Rules
Technical Ecstasy should DEFINITELY be ranked higher!! Very good and UNDERRATED ALBUM! Also, Never Say Die is a WAYYY better record than most people give it credit for!!
Great job on the ranking. It’s a hard discography for many ppl to rank, especially if their die hard fans of Oz/Ronnie/Tony and that one Ian Gillian record 🤣. I do like Zero the Hero though I must say. Everyone knows my stance on sabbath so Imma leave it there 😁🤘🏻
Born Again is awesome, front cover, back side, and the dark songs on it. Ice T and Ernie C make Forbidden worth owning. The Ozzy and Dio albums are all must have for all metal fans.
My personal Top 20 Black Sabbath Studio Albums Ranking: 1. Paranoid 2. Black Sabbath 3. Master of Reality 4. Heaven & Hell 😇😈 5. Mob Rules 6. Volume 4 7. Dehumanizer 8. Sabotage 9. So, only doing a top 10. 01- Mob Rules 02- Headless Cross 03- Heaven & Hell 04- Vol 4 05- Master Of Reality 06- Sabbuff Bluddy Sabbuff 07- Born Again 08- Tyr 09- Paranoid (truly never need to hear it again) 10- Sabotage Music On Vinyl have reissued the first two DEFIANCE albums, they sound freakin awesome (california thrash 89/90), well worth checking them out
Man I really enjoyed 13 all disc 1 played it for months didn’t realize so many people disliked it but then I discovered dio years Ian Gillian Toni Martin and even glen hughes a lot of great great music
a difficult task... such a body of work! Dio Sabbath was an entirely different animal. He really seemed to push Tony and Geezer musically. They were good with Tony Martin. They were decent with Glenn. They were great with Ozz, save 13 which was a huge letdown. Gillian was a good experiment. They were brilliant with Dio! Each key member at key moments carried the music to legendary status.
I agree regarding the last two tracks on the debut.. I can't get used to that overlong (in my opinion) guitar solo on the Warning. I would have ranked it higher, though! My favourite is Vol 4.
The truth is, that it's pretty tricky to rank Sabbath albums, because they changed so much over all those decades. Personally I like most of the Tony Martin a LOT more than all the stuff with Ozzy. I can easily accept the impact and role the early Sabbath had, but in terms of the music, well oh well. But of course everybody is welcome to have their own oppinion. And yes in terms of Valhalla from the TYR album.....perfect tune to call you into battle, haha....awesome. Also yes to The headless cross....awesome album. Heaven and Hell and this one are my favs.
My mums mates Husband Played on the Headless cross . Laurence has played with loads of people including van Morrison , Eric Clapton , and the Allan parsons project . Phenomenal bassist and very nice bloke . If you watch the Headless cross video carefully , Laurence is at the back in the corner as he was the only bloke with short hair in the band at the time haha
@@mrboulder9714 he told me even he was a bit unsure why he was in the video as he was only asked to play on the record . Said he loved working with z Iommi but felt well out of place on the video set haha
Awesome list. We agree on most. My ranking, best to worst; Sabotage Born Again Master Of Reality Black Sabbath Heaven And Hell Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Paranoid Mob Rules Vol. 4 The Devil You Know The Eternal Idol Dehumanizer Cross Purposes Headless Cross Technical Ecstasy TYR Seventh Star Never Say Die 13 Forbidden
@@mrboulder9714 Born Again is such a nasty, dirty record, I love it. Combining the best of Gillan (the band) with Sabbath was brilliant. Keep It Warm is the only power ballad I can think of where the vocalist actually sneers through it. And Zero The Hero might possibly be the heaviest riff of all time.
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, that cover art was done by artist Drew Struzan, he did Alice Coopers Welcome to my nightmare cover. Drew is famous for his movie poster art, he did the Star Wars prequels posters, back to the future posters, harry potter, Police Accademy, he's pretty famous. In fact, that's Drew Struzan himself on the cover , as the guy in bed.
Thank you for another great video, all though I don't agree with everything (dosen't matter as oppinions are always subjective, the more important is I enjoy your videoes and the way you present them) and keep them comming :) For me personal, I have never been a huge Black Sabbath fan, but I would lie if said I don't like anything, because I really do. However, I do think that a lot of the Ozzy (and despite there are 4 Ozzy albums I do enjoy, I am not a big Ozzy fan either) era are overrated and the only album I love as a whole is Master of Reality, but I don't own it yet, but I will get my hands on it and since I lack an album from that era it feels kind of wrong so I need to get it :) But if we include The Devil you know then I've got six Sabbath albums - all "4" Dio albums plus The Headless Cross and I would Rank them as follows: 1) Dehumanizer (not really surprising for as Strange Highways is my favourite Dio album - not because it is trendy to love something overlooked, but because it has been since I've bought it back in 1994 when I as a Scandinavian saw it for the 1st time and after listening to it just a couple of times) 2) The Devil You Know 3) Mob Rules 4) Headless Cross 5) Heaven and Hell (it's your favourite album, and the best Sabbath song of all time is on it (title track) but there are also some stuff I really don't like such as Lady Evil) 6) Tyr Despite the ranking I like all of those albums otherwise I wouldn't have bought them and almost surpass the limit I am willing to pay for an album (no more than 30£) Overall, Black Sabbath for me is apart from those albums I own and Master of Reality which I intend to buy, a band, where I would go on Qobuz and buy individual tracks to make my own "best of" because there are fantastic stuff as well on most of the albums, and then burn it on CD-R and listen :)

@@martinkasper197 yeah I never saw forbidden out on vinyl unless it was a really limited run most of the record stores in the area where I live didn't even carry that CD
@@mikekeeler6362 As I said in another comment, Toni Iommi wanted it to be cancelled from the release list, because he thought it was so bad... So it was removed from the calogue after the first edition. So no wonder you didn't get it on Vinyl....Because as you wrote Vinyl releases were limited in these years. Everyone was hot on CD since the mid 1980s, me too.
Agreed with your takes about the disappointing 13 album. It was so exciting to finally get something new with Ozzy but also sad that Bill wasn't on the album. In hindsight it was probably a mistake to work with Rick Rubin who pigeonholed the band and gelded Iommi's usual magnificent monolithic guitar tone. Drums sounded flat but Geezer's bass was nicely apparent in the mix. Oh well, it was the band's first number one album...meh... Thanks for all of your great opinions on the Sabbath catalog!
When I was in high school around Christmas 1985, my friend & I went to Geezer's house to get my "Sabotage" vinyl signed. He wasn't home but the neighbors all said how nice he was & he had Santa Claus in the yard!!! Not very satanic! lol

Technical ecstasy and never say die are criminally underated. I love those 2 albums. Heaven and hell is great, but for me can't match any Ozzy era album

Great picks Grant. Tony Martin era is definitely underrated mate. Cheers
Born Again is brilliant, Ian Gillan never sounded this good again
Yeah,I've never understood the dislike for it. Cheers for watching
I hated the album, when it came out... But mainly because of the shitty mixing - too much Bass...
Yeah I thought someone asked me to do this. You're welcome, hope you enjoy the video
Thank you for ranking 'The devil you know' , that's a black sabbath album too, doesn't matter what dumb businessman say.
You're welcome fella, and yes it's definitely a Black Sabbath album. Thanks for watching and commenting
Kreator albums next?
Good idea. I'll get that done at some point
Oh wow I have literally just acquired the Black Box so am thinking that I’m gonna listen to them in your ranking order. There’s loads of Sabbath that I haven’t heard hence why I got this box set so this could be really interesting! 🤘
*rummaging for a pen and paper lol*
Haha. Enjoy that box set fella, some great stuff in there. Cheers
I got nothing from Tony Martin, they are very hard to get by. My personal favourite is Sabbath bloody Sabbath. I used to be hiding behind a sofa scared shit less but loved it. Great video sir 👏👍
Cheers fella and yes Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is a great album. Thanks for watching
Good morning Mr B love the ranking I do love a bit of Sabbath I've tried to get Headless cross many times Amazon take the piss with £12 postage lol any other suggestions were I can buy this?
Thank you Alan, much appreciated. I'm sorry but no I don't know of anywhere you can grab this as everywhere seems to be expensive
Wow ain’t this ironic lol, just last night I looked on your channel to see if you had any Black Sabbath videos lol, hope your doing good though, great video
Hope you enjoy the video fella. That is indeed ironic. Cheers man, hope you're well too
Awesome Black Sabbath ranking, James!
Thanks as always Tony
Oh, a cameo from Ice T, it MUST be good!!! lol
The cameo is totally pointless. If Ernie C wasn't producing I doubt it would be on there
Ernie ruined the album. Possibly the worst Sabbath album. I haven't heard Tony's remix version yet though.
Hope you discover some albums you really like mate. Cheers Simon
I think if I were to rank these on a whim like this, it's probably gonna be:
1. Paranoid
2. Sabotage
3. Headless Cross

7. Black Sabbath
8. Tyr
9. Vol.4
10. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
11. Technical Ecstasy
12. Masters of Reality
13. Cross Purposes

Can't really speak on the rest because I'm either forgetting they exist, or haven't heard them in full... so I'm basing this on what I've been going back to the most since first hearing them.
Absolutely love Tony Martin and Dio's eras as I'm sure you could tell with these rankings, such a phenomenal revolving door of vocalists they had.
Excellent list. The Dio era is amazing the Tony Martin era is definitely underrated I think. Cheers for watching
Tony Martin era is definitely underrated. Aside from the generally poor Forbidden all his albums hold up really well a a collective body of work and his vocals are amazing.

Wheels of confusion is my all time fav sabbath song. It’s simply a masterpiece
It's a good song
Tony Martin era box is finally coming out next month.. are you buying it
Already pre ordered it. Looking forward to it
I am a first album fanatic. Great album.
It's got some absolute classics on there but some filler on Side B. Cheers
Best Sabbath album - Sabotage
Some great tunes on that one. Thanks for watching
My favorite Sabbath album
I found it hard to rank paranoid to sabotage, they are my top 5. All superb, black sabbath is not quite as good as those albums.
The best for me is Black Sabbath Sabotage No. 13 (The End) Otherwise all the LPs with Ozzy as Vocal Black Sabbath are unique 🖤🤘🤘🤘
A very important band with for the most part a very strong discography. Cheers for watching and commenting
Great video👏🏼
Black sabbath is still the best band🤟🏻

I appreciate your review. Maybe it's just a coincidence but doesn't the person on the Vol 4 album cover look like Ronnie James Dio? 😳

Technical Ecstasy should DEFINITELY be ranked higher!! Very good and UNDERRATED ALBUM! Also, Never Say Die is a WAYYY better record than most people give it credit for!!
Those albums definitely don't deserve their bad reputation it must be said. Thanks for watching and commenting
That's EXACTLY my point regarding Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die. @@mrboulder9714
I personally enjoy Never Say Die way more than Technical Ecstasy. I think Technical Ecstasy is the worst Ozzy era album by far.
Nahhhhh. TE is actually better than NSD but both are way better than they've been given credit for.@@SoloTravelerOffTheBeatenPath
Great job on the ranking. It’s a hard discography for many ppl to rank, especially if their die hard fans of Oz/Ronnie/Tony and that one Ian Gillian record 🤣. I do like Zero the Hero though I must say. Everyone knows my stance on sabbath so Imma leave it there 😁🤘🏻
Cheers Trevor. Was quite a challenge this one but I'm glad I got it done. 👍
Born Again is awesome, front cover, back side, and the dark songs on it. Ice T and Ernie C make Forbidden worth owning. The Ozzy and Dio albums are all must have for all metal fans.
Yeah ive always liked Born Again, but the production and mix could be better. Cheers for watching fella 👍
Ernie and Ice ruined Forbidden. Tony wishes that he could undue all of the damage that Ernie did to that album.

Nice top 10 picks Neil. Cheers for the heads up on those Defiance albums fella
Man I really enjoyed 13 all disc 1 played it for months didn’t realize so many people disliked it but then I discovered dio years Ian Gillian Toni Martin and even glen hughes a lot of great great music
I find 13 to be really hard to get through. Such a disappointment. The Dio years are amazing. Thanks for watching
@@mrboulder9714 yea ever since I discovered dio with Black Sabbath the ozzy stuff ain’t the same for me but I still love ozzy
a difficult task... such a body of work!
Was a tough one to do but an enjoyable one at the same time. I love all the era's of the band. Thanks for watching and commenting
I agree regarding the last two tracks on the debut.. I can't get used to that overlong (in my opinion) guitar solo on the Warning. I would have ranked it higher, though!
My favourite is Vol 4.
Took me a while to really click with Vol 4, but I absolutely love it now. Thanks for watching fella 👍
Tony iomni plans to release a remix of the born again album
It definitely needs a remix I think. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers
@@mrboulder9714 yeah tony said he recently found the original tapes of the album so he said it deserves a remix
It was a big task. The Tony Martin era definitely deserves more recognition, fantastic vocalist. Cheers for watching

I did wonder why you don't really see the bass player in The Headless Cross video and now I know. Cheers for the info.

Why is master of reality so low on the list? Just curious.
Oh wow I didn't know any of that. Thanks for the information 👍
Dehumanizer is criminally underrated. Once it hits tv crimes and letters from earth it’s steamrolling
Yeah it definitely starts with some of it's weaker aongs
@@mrboulder9714 yeah never understood that decision. For me letters from earth screams to be an opening track.
@@augustgeary5538 Couldn't agree more
Thank you for another great video, all though I don't agree with everything (dosen't matter as oppinions are always subjective, the more important is I enjoy your videoes and the way you present them) and keep them comming :) For me personal, I have never been a huge Black Sabbath fan, but I would lie if said I don't like anything, because I really do. However, I do think that a lot of the Ozzy (and despite there are 4 Ozzy albums I do enjoy, I am not a big Ozzy fan either) era are overrated and the only album I love as a whole is Master of Reality, but I don't own it yet, but I will get my hands on it and since I lack an album from that era it feels kind of wrong so I need to get it :) But if we include The Devil you know then I've got six Sabbath albums - all "4" Dio albums plus The Headless Cross and I would Rank them as follows:
1) Dehumanizer (not really surprising for as Strange Highways is my favourite Dio album - not because it is trendy to love something overlooked, but because it has been since I've bought it back in 1994 when I as a Scandinavian saw it for the 1st time and after listening to it just a couple of times)
2) The Devil You Know
3) Mob Rules
4) Headless Cross
5) Heaven and Hell (it's your favourite album, and the best Sabbath song of all time is on it (title track) but there are also some stuff I really don't like such as Lady Evil)
6) Tyr
Despite the ranking I like all of those albums otherwise I wouldn't have bought them and almost surpass the limit I am willing to pay for an album (no more than 30£)
Overall, Black Sabbath for me is apart from those albums I own and Master of Reality which I intend to buy, a band, where I would go on Qobuz and buy individual tracks to make my own "best of" because there are fantastic stuff as well on most of the albums, and then burn it on CD-R and listen :)
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it. Cheers
