  • Nancy takes you on a private tour of her studio, which is where she makes her jewelry and where she films her videos for UA-cam. In this video you get to see where all the magic happens, and you get a peek at all of the STUFF she's been collecting over the years. A few people have been asking for a tour, so here it is!
Note from Nancy: By the Way, that stupid cabinet is called a Taboret! I remembered the name of it about 2 days later. Sorry about the stuff!

Thanks again Tim! The Empire has undergone a serious invasion of order and (well sorta) neatness. I purchased cabinets and removed a bunch of extraneous "stuff". Now, I still can't find anything - when I need it - but, I do eventually, when it's no longer of use to me! Love my studio's new name - I'll need to saw out a sign. Possibly add a warning: Abandon all hope, ye who enter here! Take care and thanks for another great comment. Nancy

Hi WIllow, I am very grateful for viewers like you. You make all the hard work worthwhile. My studio has changed a bit since I made this video, so I may have to do another tour when I have it exactly how I want it. Thank you for watching and commenting, and good luck with the studio!

Hi htrfdes, I love being in there 99% of the time. The other 1% though, after a big push to create or with deadlines approaching, that I have thought of getting a big snow shovel or a fire hose and scraping the mess into a trash can. All you need to create a studio like mine are junk stores, resourcefulness and tons of work! Glad you appreciate a good hoard! Thank you, thank you. Nancy

It's so nice to see another artist with "stuff" I come from a family where I seem to be the only one who inherited the creative imagination gene and for all the cool odds and ends I have picked up along my travels to use in my art, my family sees as junk. Even after seeing these things turned into 'art' my family calls me a hoarder and I am tired of having to justify having 'stuff'. Thanks for the breath of fresh air, the humor and the great video!

Hi Balistic, you hit the nail on the anvil! Yep, space. Although, if one doesn't overbuy tools and stuff, they wouldn't need so much space. Many jewelers operate with very few tools and little space. I am just an addict and love, love, love cool tools. It's a problem, if viewed as one. Besides space, I'd like more time AND more money. All in all, I'm happy with my hoard and yes, it is very functional. Thanks for writing. Nancy

Thank you so much Paxxie! I must admit, after filming and seeing my studio in the light of video, I de-cluttered a lot and finally purchased some cabinets to store all of the "flotsam and jetsam" - can you tell I lived on a boat for many years?. Still a bunch of stuff floating around but, much better. I just pulled a bunch of odd bits out the other day and may actually make something with them. Have fun in there! Glad to meet a like mind! Thanks and take care. Nancy

This is great. I am designing my studio and collecting ideas of how I want to set it up. I have been doing beading for over 20 years so I have umpteen beads. I have started metal smithing recently so this is a lot of help to see how yo have it set up. My space is about the size of yours with higher ceilings. Thanks again for the video, it helped a lot.

Thanks for this video! I know it’s an old one, but I’d never seen it and came looking for some ideas to organize. I don’t have near the equipment you do, but I have sooo many flex shaft tool bits that there’s no way to organize them (that I can see), but it’s great to see your shop and know there really is a way to “get it together” so it makes sense to the person using it! I only THOUGHT I had too many pliers LOL... I could hold all mine with just both hands together! I feel much better, seeing all yours AND hearing you say you use them all at times. I haven’t had a “setup” in 20 years and IF my eyesight allows, I’m trying to start over. Never going back into platinum, gold and diamonds though; just polymer clay, wire-wrapping and cabochon setting... I DO wish I’d run across my centrifugal casting machine and little oven though. I’ve got 100’s of old waxes to cast... Waxes! Another organization issue!!! Anyway....thanks again! I’ve enjoyed your other videos and now, seeing your shop, am more “ready” to just get back creativity!

    Hi
Thank you for the great vids!
So what i got from the get go is that SPACE is the premium commodity. Perhaps more valuable than any tool, or even the sum of the tools. So if one is setting up a studio / shop try both to acquire as much space for it as possible and also make the effort to plan and set up for the best use of space.
I like that you've paid attention to the layout of your studio. So, while it might be full, it's still very functional.

I ordered my apprentice kit from Rio Grande, but they are expensive. Any other ideas? I still need cutters (guillotine and disk cutters), roller press, a big anvil for hammering. Thx!

Hi again, Here's another link regarding anvils which discusses everything you've ever wanted to know or didn't know you wanted to know. anvilfire (dot) com/FAQs/finding-anvils (dot) php. The HF anvil is in the "crappy" class of anvil because it is cast iron. I think that if used for jewelry making, it's fine (I've had mine for 12 years). Blacksmiths are mean to their anvils so, they need to be tough (the anvils that is). Good luck. If I come across the one I have, I'll drop you a link.

I hope you don't feel bad about saying "stuff" and not remembering the names of things. I am the same way, and so was my mom before me. She used the words "thing-a-majigs" and thing-a-mabob" (spelling?) Sharing, in case you want to expand your vocabulary :) I am THE worst at remembering names, not just of things but of people. It's horribly embarrassing somethings, but I've learned to laugh about it (so I won't cry about it :)

  • @hutergirl1ify

Also, regarding a basic metal supply for learning metalsmithing...what would you recommend as a basic starter kit. I get confused about what gauges are best for basic projects. I'm using copper mostly cuz I'm learning and make lots of lovely mistakes, so I buy the sheets. I'd like to play around with wire as well. I am taking classes 1x week, but want to practice in my studio, especially my sawing and soldering, and general fabrication techniques. Thx.
