This video will show you a few different methods of making jump rings. Some of the tools used are: pliers, a dowel, a drill, a Koil Kutter and a saw.

Very informative it's all about honesty, lots of people out there will not go through it like you did and it was quite amusing to see you do those things as if nobody was watching and I will recommend anyone to watch this video real homemade
I must say, as a severely vision impaired person (Technically legally blind) I am SOOO thankful that you explain everything so well verbally as you're showing it on the video. Helps me not have to go "Wait, what was that? It wasn't large enough on the screen for me to see!" also, you're very amusing even though you're doing a wonderful job explaining everything at the same time, made the video fun to watch just as it was informative.
Aluminum knitting needles work very well. You can drill a pilot hole through whatever you are improvising with so the end wire doesn't cut you. A battery or electric drill will work too. It's the easiest portion of the making...cutting cleanly without angled ends is the hardest. Also, a rock tumbler will help remove burrs from cutting.

Nancy, as usual, a greatly informative instruction video! You rock! I just purchased my first set of Beadsmith Jump Ring Coil Cutting Pliers and my very first jeweler's saw. I figure it would be easier and less expensive than purchasing new flush cutters every other month. I can't seem to find the perfect flush cutter. I hope this works and eventually, I hope to purchase that bedazzling Koil Kutter you use! This is going to be great fun! Thanks, gal!

It's a challenge but hey, anything worth doing in life holds it's own set of challenges! But yea, I mostly do chain maille and am about to expand into other types of jewelry making. Was a 3D artist before my accident but hey, I've found working with metals so addicting I think it's a good substitute!

Just put the mandel in the chuck and insert the end of the wire into the chuck in the space between the jaws and the mandrel. No need to clamp it in. I also use a chuck in a power screwdriver. It turns at a slower safer speed.

I'm looking to make 14 gauge 25 mm jump rings. I'm assuming most kits won't go that big so I will have to do a dowel and drill and hand saw/Dremel them. Am I correct in my thinking?

Hi LittleCherryHill, I purchased my anvil (15lb) from Harbor Freight. I don't know if they ship to Australia. Since it was cheap, it is made from cast iron (as opposed to cast steel) and had to be refinished. It also dents easily. I'd recommend steel - in retrospect. Check Farrier suppliers, old barns, Stockman's suppliers, Clark horseshoes has some smaller anvils but not prices - you need to email them. Check flea markets, metal junkyards, ask around. more on next post.

The white and black fuzzy tool is used for buffing the chairs in my studio. It can also be used to shred paper and carpet my floor with a plethora of soft, white fur. It's also useful for entertainment. Thanks for noticing WeeWeeLooLou, she's a ham. Take care. Nancy

Since this video was made, the Koil Kutter has had the saw cover upgraded from PVC to machined aluminium. Vast improvement.

That was awesome. You're a hoot! And informative. I had to know how other people make Jump rings. I've been manually winding wire on different size knitting needles and cutting them with a toenail cutter for a couple years now. Are you laughing yet? Thought so. You should be able to take that plate with the long slit in it off and lay it in the flat area on your blade to see if the blade sits exactly in the middle that way you don't have to guess

What do you mean by putting the jump rings in a pickle jar?
Cont. Keep in mind what you are using it for. Actually, a square of good steel, like a railroad tie or a steel part off a car's underside - like the frame, can be cleaned up and/or cut by a metal shop. Clamp in a big vise. You want steel, if possible. Stay away from those little jeweler's anvils - I find them wobbly and worthless - especially the brass ones. Get at least a 10lb. anvil for stability and mobility. Some of the ferriers anvils are heavy! Good luck and Take care, Nancy

It took me a moment to notice the kitty sleeping on the desk behind you. So cute! :) Do you ever have any problems with them jumping on or getting into anything dangerous? I'm always worried about my cats picking up a random shard of wire or broken saw blade in their paws.

I've seen anywhere from 10-18 but it can probably vary even more
A lot of it depends on the size mandrel you use as well as the chain pattern.
I'm re watching just to reinforce the fact that you make jump rings on a drill too...I always feel as if I'm doing something wrong when I tell people. Lol...I've always been a bad influence with my Big Girls Jump Rings lol!
Me too. But, in 15 years it hasn't happened. I try to keep my floor clean and my cat in only two areas - the main desk corner and her chair. She's happy - as long as I'm there AND she can sneak into a video. When she tries to go elsewhere, she is encouraged with strong jeweler's arms to avoid that area. Then, I swoop in with the distraction - TREATS - and she forgets all about her foolish idea. Thanks for writing. Have a purry day.

Torch them and then throw them in a pickle?!?! WTF?
Pickle is the liquid used to clean off the grime from your metal. You torch the rings to make them pliable again since working the metal stiffens it.
