It’s ironic that David Tennant’s best Doctor Who performance came from playing a character that, technically speaking, wasn’t the Doctor.
Not his best performance imo but it's really up there.
@@MovieMagic515 I don’t know, this episode in my opinion is one of, if not his best episode
@@thelegend3965 I disagree but it's a fantastic episode, i think he's better in others though. He's a brilliant actor.
@@MovieMagic515 regardless of what our favourite episodes are I think we can both agree that he is without a doubt one of the best doctors there is
@@thelegend3965 He used to be my favourite as i grew up with him but now he's second to Eccleston imo. I just loved his portrayal and the compelling emotion and gravitas Eccleston brought to the role. I agree though. He made the show very popular during it's peak in Series 4. RTD knew how to build an audience.
“I don’t die. I regenerate. But humans decay. You wither and you die.”
“You can travel with me for the rest of your life, but I can’t travel with you for the rest of mine. I have to live on. Alone. That’s the curse of the time lords.”
Bruh you just got the vast majority of that quote completely wrong

so powerful
@@Ahmed-vs4ez yeah, and he says all that completely differently to what you wrote
_"He was braver than you. In the end. That ordinary man. You chose to change. But he chose to die."_
John deserved better, as did Joan. And to fall in love with a fiction must be devastating. He was too good to be true.
They both were sexist and racist. They deserved what they got.
@@silverstarlight9395 lol ok
@@silverstarlight9395 you can't judge people morals without first looking to the ethic of the time and the place, most of the people in that time were racist and sexist

the doctor has given his life a few times when it looked liked he whould not come out of it ok the caves of androzani comes to mind and a few other times so she was wrong jonn smith was not braver then him
maaan that was so heartbreaking..
John didn't want to go...
Neither did Rose or Donna but their songs ended and all good things must come to an end. The story still goes on.
"When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it will never end. But however hard you try, you can't run forever"
"They break my heart"
"Nothing's sad, until it's over"
@@niranutcake always running, never stopping because he dare not look back out of shame. You take ordinary people and you fashion them into weapons Doctor. Your children of time.
Then you go to his regeneration, "I don't want to go." or his cheating a regeneration into his severed hand. It was a theme throughout his run.
No you did not say that
_The death of John Smith_ is with no question one of the *top three saddest moments* in Doctor Who.
The scene where John Smith sees the life he could live but never will is the most heartbreaking scene I've ever seen in Doctor Who
Absolutely. Always has me welling up.
I can never not cry watching this scene. Jessica Hynes brought such warmth and sincerity to this character, one of the best guest stars in Who history in one of the best two-parters they ever did.
This scene was really touching cos John Smith has a choice live, get married, have children, grow old or die but his death will save billions of people
1:20 and 1:37 this is why I love Tennant as the Doctor/John Smith because he can show emotion the best out of all the Doctors he can portray The Doctor as a kind and fair one but also a dark and saddened Doctor.
As much as the tenth wouldn't like to admit it, this experience changed him forever. He was so traumatized by 'dying' as John Smith, as a human, that the concept of death really held on to him. He never really killed his John Smith persona, it was still inside him, making him more emotional and sometimes just unstable. The next regeneration had to cope with this by having 'memory problems' so he never has to feel so unstable and afraid again.
14th Doctor: *Ahem* Allow me to introduce my self.
@@Enderwave22 can't wait for the 14th doctor to meet up with the 10th doctor
This scene is so powerful in so many ways, the several overlapping conflicts that are all going on at once, in a perfect harmony of storytelling. Absolutely incredible episode and scene. When John Smith realizes finally that The Doctor has to make that difficult choice every day, you just see it in his eyes that he realizes that his life will save Billions and out of all the options, that is the only one that will save the world, he realizes that every day the doctor must choose the hardest option, the most difficult one that still will save the most lives. So powerful!
Even the Doctor's fictional identity needed a companion to tell him to do the right thing. The guy needs humans to give him some compassion, it seems.
Or else he goes godly mad
What I love a lot about this story is that it was originally written for the 7th Doctor and you can picture Sylvester McCoy in many of these scenes. But Tennant’s performance is absolutely top class.
The best part is that Tennant was by far the most like McCoy, a doctor who can flip a switch and become an individual who is darker than anything we could possibly imagine.
2:13
How many more? Just think. How many have died in your name? The Doctor. The man who keeps running, never looking back because he dare not, out of shame. This is my final victory, Doctor. I have shown you yourself.
omg I legit think of this too, so powerful of Davros
It's amazing how well David plays his role here, I've always found it funny how he was actually was in doctor who before he played the doctor in that big finish story....meaning he's been a voice actor for a long time too
Masterpiece of an episode. One of David's best performances, and one of the best Doctor Who episodes out there.
I didn't expect to cry at all during my rewatch of Tennant's run as I remember pretty much everything.
I had forgotten that John starts begging not to go, which started getting me upset, but the final nail in the coffin was the flashforward of his life with Joan. I was not prepared for that, and even though I have watched Tennant's run before, it made me cry uncontrollably.
The moment he goes to meet Joan's descendant and she recognizes him is just....wow
This two-part story is one of my favorites of all time (and space). Beautifully acted, perfectly paced, and with an intriguing premise.
The suspense works very well, but the story doesn’t over-rely on it. I’ve rewatched (re-pocket watched?) it twice and found myself enjoying just a much each time.
And the music!!! It really adds so much to the whole experience, I don't think it would have same effect without it
Imagine just waking up one day and reality changes for u in a day and turns out you aernt human
Probably the saddest moment in the entire series
Brilliant episode. It was so.. sad and heartbreaking..
I was about to cry, very, very heartbreaking
This is the REAL Doctor Who. Completely different from the latest series.
Соглашусь. Кардинально отличается от последних серий.
Blame the choice of writers
I know
Fucking Political Correctness and SJW propaganda
Yeah that’s kind of the point of the show. Always regenerating. If you don’t like the show now then hopefully a future era will be better for you.
"falling in love, that didn't even occur to him?"
"no."
"then what sort of a man is that?"
a man who was heartbroken, one who was already tragically in love, and didn't think that any form of him could ever love in that way again, or at least yet. i think that's the truth of the matter.
It's the one adventure he cannot have. The first time this show made me cry... That and the follow up for this episode (the lockdown one)
Fantastic episode and they managed to match the quality of the story in the very next episode called Blink. 2007 was a great year for the fans.
Technically the story this episode this is based on is canon, meaning this happened twice.
Heart brake x2
What?
@@TheOldBlackShuckyDog this episode was based off an audio book with sylvester mcoy, meaning this story happened twice to doctor 7 and 10
I love this episode it is so emotional and so beautiful.
Written by Paul Cornell and adapted from a novel with the Seventh Doctor.
Oh didn’t know that
My headcanon is that as John was changing back into The Doctor this scene plays out.
The light from the watch shines on John's face. He can feel the change. His mind is growing slower, growing dark. He is being pushed aside to make room for another. He takes one last look at Joan and with his last human breath says with tears in his eyes "I don't want to go".
OMG I love it!
One of my favorite episodes. Poor John. Poor Joan. I felt bad for them really, but when I was watching this, I was like Martha. I was praying for the Doctor to come back.
2:51, if you pause at the right moment, The Doctor’s face is LOL!
This really breaks my heart, he had to watch a life he always wanted and could’ve had, everyone eventually has to leave him, either by choice or by death
He wasn't able to achieve on living a normal life with Joan here, but he finally got his wish some years later and he was able to live happily alongside his friend Donna Noble and her family.
Though i would like to see him (as The Curator) go back to Joan and spend time together then they go in the museum as they both curate the stories and adventures of triumph, friendship, tragedy and hope brought upon by The Doctor.
What a fantastic scene you wouldn’t see this in doctor who now
One of my all time favorites ....along with 30 other episodes, lol.
John was a good man
Coward or Killer, coward any day. Maybe it's time.
Benny nearly died in WWII but he lives on because the Doctor saved him. He then went on to become a famous US chess grandmaster and tutored Beth Harmon...
2020: 0:10 it not my fault i just had to bring it
Don't feel too bad guys. John Smith then became part of the Doctor so he technically didn't die.
No if you watch the current show, you will see John Smith is definitely dead.
"- Was she happy ?...in the end ?
- Yes she was... were you ?"
I'm not crying you are
I feel the doctor gave him them future memories, to make him happy at the end. Instead of dying in fear of something he will never have, he will die with memories he could’ve had.
How well would The Doctor do against The Goosebumps monsters?
Not well
He’s delt with the werewolf
He’d punt slappy into a black hole.
This is the saddest moment in Doctor Who, sorry, I can't stop crying when John has to choice, it's one of the best David's performance, if it ins't the best 😭
This was Dr who at its finest.
Writing is unmatched
Man, this show used to be so good
This is my favorite DW story.
3:18
Is it me or does this make-up make David Tennant look a bit like Peter Capaldi?
This just makes his (Capaldi’s) casting that much better
David Tennant's old make-up predicted Peter Capaldi will become the 12th doctor in 2014(a few years after this episode released)
A white man with white hair...
Joan, you break my heart.
👍
Reminds me of the scene in Fathers Day. When the Doctor tells the couple he can never have a life like them.
This was such a sad episode gosh I remember it so clearly!! Brilliant acting! :')
One of the few moments where Doctor who still makes me cry to this day. How dare you Doctor Who, not really keep it up 🤣
Old john smith’s hair reminds me of the lego 12th doctor minifigure
I have a different take for this episode than other people. I don't think Smith as he wasn't the Doctor, I think about him as someone that the Doctor would like to be deep inside: a mortal human being. He was sad in the past about the fact that the people he wants get old while he remains living. He can remember what he did as John Smith because he lived all of that, and felt it and for that, he was so angry. But I think, in a way, his fury felt... kinda sad. It remembers me For the Man who Has Everything from Alan Moore. "You have no idea what you took from me". In the end, he came back for his lover because he wanted to keep just something about he can't have.
Sorry, this episode made me cry a lot.
Such a great episode
John Smith wasn’t played by Colum Sanson Regan but the doctor was
Is it just me or does David look really cute in the thumbnail?
Thanks UA-cam. Really needed to see that. Thanks a lot 2020
don't cry my love
For me that scene of that possible life just break my heart
Brilliant episode💫
The Doctor's decision to become human was perhaps not the best one. The Family's pursuit of him caused so much suffering and death and heartbreak.
However, I had issues with the way John Smith and Joan regarded him, as a coward for running and hiding. It wasn't cowardly, it was an attempt at being merciful. He wasn't a fool, he knew exactly what horrible fates he could inflict on them if they didn't take the hint and wanted to give them the chance to accept their mortality and die peacefully. The Doctor is flawed, yes, but let's see how well the universe would do without him. From the perspective of the time period they were in, he had saved them hundreds of times in the past and would save them hundreds more times in the future.
@dr103 That's why I mentioned the flawed part. I do think he should have dealt with the Family from the start because they weren't going to back down.
I think we have to remember that from Ten's perspective the Time War was still a fairly recent thing for him, and he was disgusted with himself due to the things he did, his main motivation I think was to show to himself that he could still be the Doctor of old
Did The Doctor just give her a Genjutsu?
I wishbi could forget and rewatch this ep
Maybe if you transferred your memories in to a pocket watch and became human, you could?
@@JonS I wish lmao
There some episodes that just shine...i still love the one where the tardis becomes human..BEST EVER.
Second one was where he had a daughter thru skin sample...she also.went out to save the world but instead of BRINGING HER BACK...AND building her THE IDIOTS AT.BBC HAD.TO.DESTROY THE DOCTOR COMPLETELY...WORLD WIDE AND FOREVER....AND DESTORY A FINE.ACTRESSES.CAREER AT.THE SAME TIME
Heartbreaking!
I wish John had a happy ending. He deserved it and these episodes are painful to watch when you know the ending

I wonder who played the children of John smith/the doctor. Does anyone know? Thank you
I was watching corba. Kai and then hes doctor who so I looked up and this popped up
The Doctor after watching all of this: *Furious inhale* YOU GET CHAINED UP, YOU GO INTO A COLLAPSING EVENT HORIZON, YOU GET TRAPPED IN A MIRROR, AND YOU BECOME A SCARECROW.
I like how John Smith's lover tries to say that the character of John Smith is better then The Doctor, when he has made so many sacrifices, even when he didn't want to, to ensure that she and the rest of the universe could continue on for billions to trillions of years more. He has given up so much of what he wants to the point where he doesn't expect anything anymore. But then, to a human who lives off of his pain and suffering, I guess it really doesn't resonate with her and she just doesn't care.
They should have done a 7th doctor/Sylvester McCoy episode based on the novel of the same name then do a 10th doctor/David Tennant episode based on the novel of the same name
Poor David, twice in Series 3 he was made up to look old.
I am curious to see if they were right
@@abcdefgh6951 Yeah me too.
I really do like 13 and the new era. But they just don’t make Doctor Who like this anymore.

I hated the way he fell for Joan. Martha is the best!
I just want to know the reason behind disliking this video. I never understand tbh. 🤦♀️
Perhaps because it's too sad?
Did The Doctor have a child with her when human?
No. It was a glimpse of what the life of John Smith and Joan would be like if John didn't change back.
