Nswish said at first that it was either top 5 or top 10 (I can't remember) at first, and gabs at around the same time took more attempts on it than hyper paracosm, and around twice as many attempts on it compared to killbot
As a victor of SPL, I believe the main contributor to this effect is mostly a pair of the inherent nature of the level being memory and timing based, as well as the shift of skillsets from top players in general. The initial layout of the level is somewhere on the easier side of extremes difficulty wise, but it being memory obviously boosts that difficulty up quite a lot. The main factor though is how anti fps reliant it is, There’s been a general trend of top players recently using tools like fps bypass to reach high framerates, and making game modes like ship and wave much easier because of that. Most levels on the demonlist have a sizable chunk difficulty that comes from ship and wave, while spl on the other hand is practically strictly timing based with the exceptions of ship and wave gameplay being some of the easiest parts in the level. Because of this shift, the difficulty of the level has stayed relatively the same regardless of the meta changing from lower fps values to higher ones reaching up to 360 over the span of the 4 years spl has been on the list. Among many other factors such as top players specializing in skillsets like wave, which don’t align with super probably level’s skillset in the slightest, is the main factor why I believe it has risen so high as of today.
Fun how Congregation most likely did not stop going up just yet. Dosh7t thinks it's harder than the likes of Sary Never Clear and I think it's harder than Thinking Space
This is one of my favorite GD videos of all time. I come back to it every couple of weeks just to see how much has changed, and even though SPL is off the list, I'm glad to see the next level and its jumpscares continue that legacy.
As a victor of SPL myself, this video was very intriguing and interesting to me! Yet I feel like there are some factors that play into SPL's placement history that people either don't know about or choose to ignore. Here are some of them: Extra factor #1: The base gameplay is definitely harder than what people think. I usually hear the fact that SPL's base gameplay is around insane demon difficulty, but I think this is honestly very false. I would say that the layout is about as difficult as moment by lexy, another pretty hard extreme demon (although it isn't a memory level but that doesn't matter in this case). Extra factor #2: The community's views of the level Since SPL was moved up a lot on the demon list, most people noticed how weird this level is and started to assume that the list was always correct about its placement (spoiler alert: the demon list isnt even close to accurate lol). This made it so that anyone who would try the level in recent times would probably be influenced by the majority's opinion of the level's difficulty without experiencing the level, which adds a HUGE amount of bias when it comes to people's opinions on SPL. Extra factor #3: Shift in needed skill for extremes Ever since FPS Bypass was allowed on the demon list, the focus of difficulty in extreme demons shifted rapidly towards harder wave sections and harder ship sections, some examples of this being Slaughterhouse and Acheron, the current top 2 demons. Because of this, SPL started to stick out as a sore thumb in the pro player community, being wildly different from any level on the list (even other memory levels dont come close to SPL's levels of tomfoolery). Extra factor #4: Mental pressure Contrary to popular belief, the hardest part of beating SPL is not learning the level, but rather sticking to it and not giving in to the pressure and giving up. This level is known to give a huge mental block to its players because of how unfair and difficult some timings are from 0. A lot of people don't talk about this point, and I find it quite shocking since this was my main struggle with the level. To those of you who read the entirety of this comment for some reason, thank you. Great video! Loved how informative it is. I just wish other victors of this level would've been contacted for a more accurate look at SPL's effect on the pro player community. Definitely keep making stuff like this! Very good video! I’ve always found the SPL situation funny because it just seemed like it wouldn’t ever get kicked off the list. My hardest is only the Doom Gauntlet & have no desire to do anything this hard so I found it entertaining when levels like SPL get moved up a stupid amount of places. It’s become one of my favorite Extremes because it’s so different to usual Wave & Ship carried list demons releasing all the time.
victor of it myself (nobody-cares tier flex) here, i strongly believe the main reason people keep wanting it to go up so much is because the level primarily targets a skillset so different to oh so many a list demon today (especially post-2020). rather than brutal ship/waves, invisible timings are utilized instead. you cant even tell how you die like half of the times, without the use of shod. the level also remains the exact same difficulty on every refresh rate (for the most part). furthermore, the learning process was nowhere near the hardest part of it - its the sheer patience you must have preparing for and getting through all the hard chokepoints in the level. last but not least, the layout is NOT insane demon difficulty like a lot of people erroneously believe, since the more you play it, the more difficult it feels until you nearly get the level done. being honest, i actually prefer these kinds of levels just because they just feel “different”. nice video btw
Props for making a to the point video with a creative premise, rather than ranting on about innocuous details for half an hour (like some other GD channels). This was pretty enjoyable to watch
8:25 but most memory stuff is hella fun :( in recent years people have really enjoyed levels like Nightshade, Goner, Triple Six, and tons of good hard-insane demons have been released too
The 25hz for Venfy is complete misinformation, it was done on a 60hz phone, and there’s no such thing as a 25hz phone lmao. But really cool video and nice watch
i just took a look back at it and mistook the 25fps as his refresh rate when it was actually the video info. that’s my bad, but thanks for pointing that out and thanks for the complement!
I beat SPL around a week ago, and there's one key point I believe was missed as to why SPL's placement history is so abnormal. Probably the biggest oversight here was how Luq and venfy are low refresh rate players. You mentioned how SPL is entirely hard/insane demon gameplay and not timing based, but this is 110% false. Aside from the first cube, I would say that the entire level's base gameplay is that of a lower end extreme. What carries its difficulty though, is the relentless amount of chokepoints scattered throughout the level (I go more into detail about these in my completion description). A lot of these chokepoints are 60fps frame perfects, and since Luq and venfy are low refresh rate, a lot of these timings align much better to the framerate they played on. It should be noted that SPL was placed 2 spots below Bloodbath, which even today is #25 on the LRR demonlist, above levels like Bausha Vortex, Freedom08, and even Celestial Force which remains on the list today. It makes total sense that a level was placed based on 2 LRR opinions behind a level that was entirely inaccessible to the both of them. I am still yet to understand how Luq called the memory aspect of SPL a lot of the difficulty. For a memory level of its difficulty, SPL is ridiculously easy to learn, and every victor of the level I have spoken to agrees with me. It took me around 3 hours to learn the level, yet it took 8 days to beat. Another really cool thing about SPL is once you learn it there is almost zero memory aspect. Almost every single timing is very clearly marked out by the decoration and doesn't require much focus at all to play through. I usually struggle with memory a LOT, but SPL gave me zero issues to remember since I could pretty much read the level just fine after learning. The level was first raised on July 17th, which is the same day the level received its first high refresh rate victor, being Nimbus on 144hz. There were 2 more LRR players that beat SPL before Nimbus' completion, so you can probably see where I'm coming from here. The level would not receive another victor until January 2020, when LuigiDB would beat it on 144hz and call it mainlist. The next victor was Gabs on 240hz in April, and shortly after the level was raised once again. I'm not going to go into all 7 times it was raised, but you can see every raise was a result of HRR player opinions. To summarise my points, SPL is basically the opposite of modern day difficulty, in the sense that it becomes much more accessible relative to other extreme demons if you play it on low refresh rate. Its original placement made total sense due to the 2 levels above it being so incredibly HRR skewed, and since the level was so intimidating it took absolutely ages to receive enough HRR victors to make raising the level a reasonable option since the average placement opinion at that point was weighing towards the LRR players. I personally find the level to still be very underrated, as I thought it was similar in difficulty to Cybernetic Crescent, however no sane LRR player would even come close to making that comparison. SPL's placement history is a direct result of an insanely low refresh rate friendly level, and that is the huge point this video failed to make. Still a very interesting video nonetheless, super probably level has an awesome history and it is great to see someone talk about it.
Luq's video description says that learning the level was "some of" the difficulty, rather than most. I haven't interacted with them at all, but did they actually say that memorising it is most of the difficulty?

The thing is, since SPL released, the player's skill has been increasing as the time passes. However, SPL relies more on memory, so the levels around it become easier with time, but it remains at the same place because you cant really practice memory
i think part of the reason spl's placement is so weird is that it only requires a set amount of skill to beat and if you are good enough to do that no matter how much better you get at the game it's not going to change the difficulty of it for you much, this is why i think really skilled players would rate it's difficulty as much higher since they are used to beating hard levels much easier than most other people, that being said there are parts in the level that are (mostly) visible which tend to be much harder than the other parts which is why you don't see everyone with the exact att count, others also learned the level better, obviously when show hitboxes was introduced it was made much easier to learn, the fps's people have been switching too also have made a big difference since it's mostly timing based which is not ideal for 240/360 fps, along with that the skillsets of players do not match up with it much, there are plenty of levels on the list that are almost entirely so high up because it doesn't match the skillset most top players have been getting, for example, walter white was a pretty easy level imo, if i was to place it i would place it top 40 not top 20 in fact that's what i was thinking the difficulty was around when i was still trying to beat it (when it was still being verified) again it's another pretty timing based level which has made it's placement weird, it's also notable i was playing on 60 fps since that was what i found it was easiest on which also made a lot of the ship parts really hard chokepoints but also the only really hard parts in the level
There also was funny thing with i hare you and delebit oblivio i hate you was moved to legacy list in end of july 2021and after few days it moved up 17 placements above and finally kicked out from extended list in October and delebit oblivio was in legacy list for a little bit and its moved up and still in top 150 hardest levels
