Billy Owens: The Career of the Man who INSPIRED KEVIN DURANT’S GAME | FPP

- He has the unfortunate distinction of being best remembered as the player Don Nelson traded Mitch Richmond for when he broke up Golden State’s RUN TMC Trio, and this kept a cloud over his head during his best years in the NBA, but Billy Owens was a rare talent especially in the era he came up in, but gets an unfair distinction as a bust. He was a Pennsylvania legend at Carlisle High School, then took his talents to Syracuse University; where he would team with guys like Derrick Coleman, Sherman Douglas and Stevie Thompson. For three years, Owens improved and by his junior season, he established himself as one of the nation’s premier players. He would enter the 1991 NBA draft alongside other big name guys who didn’t live up to expectations like Larry Johnson and Kenny Anderson, as Owens would be the player picked after these two. The Kings drafted him, but he was soon traded to Golden State where he would have a target on his back as he was now replacing the great Mitch Richmond alongside Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin; later in his time with Golden State he would also be joined by Latrell Sprewell and Chris Webber. But after a great start to his career; Owens would undergo major surgeries on both knees, prior to his third season in the league, and after this, his numbers would drop in every remaining year of his career as he eventually spent time in Miami, Sacramento and Seattle before bouncing around a few teams in his final years. But Billy Owens is looked as a complete bust due to being compared to Magic Johnson coming out of college, as he could legitimately play all 5 positions and was the first player of his size who could handle the ball and pass as well as he did since Magic, and he was an exceptionally versatile player throughout his time in the league, but injuries slowed him down early and even though he could stuff the stat sheet, it was never the generational numbers people were expecting. But make no mistake, whether you’re talking the 1990s or Modern Day NBA, Billy Owens was an incredible talent with a rare skillset.

Billy was a beast back in the day.
I thought Billy Owens underachieved in the NBA, especially that GSW gave up Mitch Richmond who was a perennial All Star. Billy Owens never came close to making an All Star Game.
He really wasn't, lol. He was a solid role player with a sh****.
Maybe in college. He was an decent player in the NBA.
Loved watching billy owens at Syracuse. One of my favorite orangemen
Remember in 1991-92, when Sarunas Marciulionis (another great video idea) had his breakout 18-19 ppg season, NBA Today said, "Run TMC isn't gone. Now, it's Tim-MARCIULIONIS-Chris!!"
Marciulionis was nice
I was a huge fan. and Sherman Douglas
Yeah Billy unfortunately had those early injuries but still grinded and thugged out a fair career. Much props to him. Dope channel. Keep up the great work. Your videos are much appreciated 💯✊🏾
Rony Seikely is a another great Syracuse player and had a solid nba career especially with Miami
*Seikaky
These are so dope. Teaches us about lesser known players we might of slept on or overlooked. Keep em coming!
Best and most thorough Billy O doc!!
Don Nelson liked Owens enough to trade Mitch Richmond for him, that's wild
Because apparently Don Nelson and Mitch Richmond had a fall out. That's why Don Nelson traded Mitch.
If Mitch stayed with GSW, the starting 5 in 1994 would've been:
C: Gatling
PF: Webber
SF: Mullin
SG: Richmond
PG: Hardaway
@@lilpenny1982Why are you assuming they would have the same exact record if they had kept Richmond?
Nelson felt that they were to small and needed to add a big man.
Richmond way better player than Billy Owens one of the stupidest trades in NBA history@@MrOctober44
Billy Owens game at his peak. Was more situated to be the 3rd best player on a championship type team. Good at all but great at none player. They’re alot of players like this in the league.
Ok expert 🤓
Facts. I didn’t see anything special with him
Absolutely Love this channel very informative, we gotta get a video on Andrei Kirilenko! I feel like many have forgotten about it him! Was an amazing player in his prime!
Gus Johnson with The Baltimore Bullets was a stellar 6'6 foward and guard.
Injuries and Chemistry are heavy.
Marquise Johnson was another LeBron like player for the bucks
I would never say that he’s a predecessor to the style of a Kevin Durant type of player. Instead, I would say that he is a predecessor to the LeBron James prototype. And I would make a statement like that just because Billy Owens was inspired by Magic Johnson.
Durant explicitly said he was the first person he studied.
Billy Owen's if put in the right system he would've shine. But he was Magic Johnson type Big Guard in Forward position I believe he was a head of his time.
@@jaeaiithasolchyld1565 thanks for the education😀
@@lordgodspeed1539 just doing what's needed.
@@Mannyboi-hj2gs I was a huge fan of his during his Syracuse years
him, sprewell and Webber were so fun to watch
Finally, honesty. Thank you!
Loved Billy Owens. I wore #30 in high school because of him. Thank you for sharing
Maaaan...I'm pretty sure most Warrior fans know exactly who Billy Owens is
Why wouldn't they he played there
@@comcastic32 Because the name of the channel is 'forgotten player profiles'. And also he's notorious for being part of the trade that broke up the Run TMC team.
Maaaan.. Nobody in sports media or casual fans are bringing up Billy Owens. #yourestupid
He played with so much Swagger!!💪💯
It was this one kid that would come onto the court when I was in High School, yelling "Billy" as if to say that his game was patterned after young Billy Owens. He was the only guy that I ever heard yell out "Billy" while playing ball, but when I saw this video, I immediately thought about Bro now 33 years later.
😂
I was in HS when he was playing and I also modeled my game after his, I loved his game
Thank you 😊
Billy was far from a Bust. GS had an amazing starting 5 in the mid 90's. T Hardaway, Spreewell, B Owens, C Mullen, C Webber 😎
Billy Owens was on the cover of SI (when that was a big deal) when he was a freshman. Same freshman class as Alonzo Mourning and Christian Laettner
That was g.s. fault after tmc they had Owens sarunas mullin leading into c webb But old man Nelson ruined everything
Bobby Jones next? He used to play for the Sixerd in the 80s, defensive specialist that never gets brought up
Loved watching him in those Sac teams with Mitch
He's another one of those guys with the misfortune of being born too early. His skillset would've definitely been more appreciated in recent years.
His skill set was appreciated, he had injury problems.
Wayman Tisdale or Lionel Simmons would be good video ideas
Oh boy ! Corey maggette is next baby!!
Mid range Shooter him ,rip, lamarcus Aldridge don't get enough credit for they mid range shooting 🌠
I know BO his son and my son played on the same AAU team.
These were the days where I thought about was basketball 🏀 the Big East was better than pro ball damn I savor those early 90s basketball was my life back then
Seriously disliked Owens back in the day.
Always saw him as a supremely talented dude that coasted on talent. Don't know how, but i never realized the serious injuries he dealt with. Always thought he was soft and unmotivated, turns out his body betrayed him.
My bad Billy Owens, my bad.
Also, last couple videos you've mentioned two of my favorite college ballers from back in the day, Danny Fortson and Corliss Williamson. Any chance they'll be featured someday?
Tim Thomas before Tim Thomas
Interesting that Syracuse had two underachieving players in the NBA in Derrick Coleman and Billy Owens. What a waste of a talent, especially Coleman because he was supposed to be the modern day Karl Malone.
I think that he was indeed soft even before injuries. But unmotivated no, I don't think so. He just couldn't do any better, his body betrayed him.
@@lilpenny1982Coleman was more talented than Karl Malone and many others that came before and after him but had shit in his head.
Dan Fortson would be a great one! Some called him one of the best college power forwards they had ever watched
Ironic that by 1995-96, Sacramento had Mitch Richmond AND Billy Owens!
Nope. Warriors traded Mitch for Owens.
@crackerjack9320 yes but you obviously don't realize that Owen's eventually ended up on the kings
I totally forgot that Bill Owens went BACK to the Warriors, eventually.
Billy Owens was COLD
He was good in warriors
Terry Cummings

Juwan Howard

Trent Tucker

RIP Malik Sealy 5:22
So moving forward we can only expect new videos every saturday? Once a week?
Even though he had a very good college career, I don't think he was as dominant as most thought he would be. But that could be because there was a lot of talent around him at Syracuse.
15:17 he got cooked 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
If he never had all those injuries.....
Guy named Jesse told me this guy was lighting in a bottle
The original Glen Robinson/Carmelo Anthony
The closest comparison to him would be Boris Diaw.
More like odom bro
@@EversGreen-fy4vs Disagree. Body types make BO and BD more similar than LO.
@@thescatman5029Tru dat however BO is way more offensive then BD. And is his game is a bit more flashier than BD. But to each his own, also BO and LO weren't as perimeter oriented.
@@EversGreen-fy4vs Boris Diaw was the key to the incredible passing team that was the 2014 Spurs. One of the greatest passing teams ever. His penetration and kick style mixed in with his 3 ball was a threat all playoffs that the Spurs continuously capitalized on. He made so many passes that led to someone else getting an assist. Known as the hockey assist. Get a kick out of this. By 2014 Diaw was out of his prime. He had some success early in his prime with the Suns but he wasn't used quite the same he was by the Spurs in 2014.
8:50 I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. I know that 1991 was a poor overall draft, but HOW was Rich King a #14 overall pick? How was Rich King a first round pick?
Dude shut up
i still wish he'd gone to UNC instead. i think he would have developed better (for the pro).
B.O. was that guy FRFR….
People don’t mention him
Billy was mean
Shep Owens dad 🏀
The irony of Owens and DC(doesn't care) being on the same team. 🙄
Billy Owens was himothy sr😂
Dope video, but that looping background music has to go 👎🏿
That early hype about his outside shooting is the craziest thing I have ever heard. 8 3 pointers in a 15mph wind??? He was TERRIBLE from outside. He kinda shot the ball on the way down from outside when he was open, very awkward. 29% career from 3, and he almost never shot it from out there. Also only 63% career from the line. Good player, I watched him a lot during his early years in Golden State, but yea, basically a bust when considering the hype. Edit: Upon further reflection I guess that 15mph wind could have somehow magically blown in 7 of the 8 by pure chance... lol Also, being a Richmond/Run TMC fan that trade was terrible. The Warriors should have ran with Run TMC for a decade.
I don't think that there was ever a hype for his 3p shooting.
@@user-vw1vf5cw7d Did ya watch the video?
@@user-vw1vf5cw7d Also, Richmond was gone long before Spree, he did not "fall out of favor".
@@joebauers3746 yes you are right, after 30+ years I got confused.
@@joebauers3746 it was Marculionis and not Sprewell who was Don Nelson's darling that he wanted to get rid off Richmond
Ahsmwm
He did not like to go right.
Great college player. As a King's fan, he was lazy AF in NBA.
The NBA is warlock coven only the guys they want up front will achieve that spotlight. If you from the hood we have all seen guys that can do it all
So, Billy Owens declined every year after leaving Golden State...
...and this is the guy Kevin Durant patterned his game after...
...checks out.
Man I ask can you do Michael Beasley next. Fuck! What do I have to do to get my guy his flowres?
Someone on The Warriors with #30 just looks so fake
