Which One Is Best? Hantek CC-65 vs PicoScope TA018 Current Clamp

The Hantek CC-65 current clamp and PicoScope TA018 amp clamp are very similar in specification. In this video, we look at how to use the Hantek and PicoScope amp clamp meter using the PicoScope 2204a, and review each tool to see which is the best. We use the ThinkTool Master 2 to activate some components and compare the waveforms.

Just an FYI for the Hantek amp clamps (both the 65A and 650A): you can modify them fairly easily if you have soldering skills (and I'm guessing most people using an oscilloscope have those skills). It involves changing and/or adding some capacitors and such, but it makes a huge difference! Just search for "Hantek CC-65 Teardown and Testing"

Excellent video Darren. Quick plug for USA buyers AES wave sells thier oem or you can buy a Pico one and have them as a ST3 shielded lead to the clamp 6,9,12,15 ft which reduces noise in some tests with a noisy car. It’s $25-35 depending on length. I’ve noticed huge differences with them. Keep up the good content

New scope user here just purchased a 2204a I already have an Autel mp408 4 channel I purchased a Rotkee pressure transducer and both the low and high amp clamps from Hantek and after not getting the desired patterns on my scanner I got a cheap laptop to use with my scopes

Good comparison, I have the Peaktech 4250 which is basically the same as the Pico except with banana plug leads. It works well and can be had for about the same price as the Hantek
Ah good to know, there are quite a few different brands about, that all look quite similar… difficult to choose!
Tools are expensive for this trade.but sometimes you're better off paying a bit extra for quality equipment. Great comparison. Thanks brother

@@MechanicMindset I have the standard Pico High TA167and Low TA018. I do have 1 other less expensive low amp clamp for when I want to poke around doing current draw while still monitoring the draw at the battery. Also on my wish list is the TA189 as I have see how sensitive it is... more to come on that once I have it!

The amount of money you spend on the tool is directly proportional by how much use you will get out of it. It’s also directly proportional to price per performance if you can get 4X performance out of a 2X price and that’s a good decision.
Ive got the Autel amp clamps. They came with my Oscilloscope accessory kit. The leads are approximately 3 meters long.
Cool, the long leads are really good to have wiring around the car; especially if your scope is on a diag trolley. What scope are you using?
i have to say the price here in the US was not that bad. shipped to me was $140 i am sure Hantek will do the job also but, i find the longer leads for me works out better!
Very useful Darren, thank you. I think the Hantek was reading slightly higher because it is a 65A clamp not 60A and should have used a different profile to the Pico clamp. Without thinking about it more carefully I’m not sure if that would make it read higher or lower!
I like your thinking. Just did some maths; Hantek is 1mV/10mA. Times x100, makes it the same as Pico clamp 100mV/1A
It does look proportionally out as the current rises.

@@MechanicMindset I’ve got the Hantek, both 65A and 650A. I’ll see if I can devise an experiment with a current limited power supply to check their accuracy - if only up to 10A.
@@willishendley8924 Sounds like a plan, I should have done a test with my meter. Although I had done a batt drain comparison; the clamps aren’t accurate at low current below 30mA. And my meters haven’t been calibrated since 2010 when I was working in the workshop last 😅
mostly ignition and injectors testing . i went pico because of quality and a longer lead. works good with my autel mp408
It’s definitely worth spending the extra, especially if you use it a lot. Hantek is great value though 👍
PicoScope TA018 has a timer for auto off, like some multimeters do.
That’s right, I believe you can toggle that feature on/off for longer term measurements.
Yo D. With the pico scope clamp, you can send them to AES wave for the noise reduction lead.I got hooked up with better leads for both clamps. Both works really great.

Darren thanks for sharing. Is there an AMP clamp like the one you used in the parasitic drain class? I’ve been in the garage messing around checking for CAN voltages and resistance. My 07 odyssey has the termination resistors and the correct voltage measurements where my 99 Accord EXL doesn’t. It does have a computer is it possible it has a single wire buss. For having a limited limited computer system I looked up OEM replacements and very expensive 600-1500$ and none of them replace the unit I have in my vehicle. Will write you to figure out the informal group chat. I bungled it up because I didn’t know what to expect. Stay well excellent classes an very informative 👍
Hey Artie, the one I use in the lesson is the new BNC+ clamp for the Pico 4425a, it won’t work on any other scope.
It’s possible it’s a single line, would have to check the wiring diagram. Catch you soon 👍

PDI and Tecpel look the same as Pico. I have another branded version of the ESI with the Nueron N2. Seems like a good clamp

Good comparison video Darren however, is there an obvious point I’m missing but how do you know the one is more accurate than the other? Cost seems to be the decider, but how do you know either is accurate? What are you measuring them against other than each other, I don’t see why the cheaper one couldn’t be more accurate?
Good question, I suppose I set out to see how much difference there was. The Hantek definitely drifted faster; so wouldn’t be as accurate. I would have to do another test, maybe with an ammeter or current shunt 👍 a video to add to the list 😁
Hi, have you considered extending the cable on the hantek CC-65? I think it would make a grate video…the reason I’m asking, is that I’m curious if it actually affects its accuracy!
I would just get an extension lead. It’s a good question. Although, as these type of amp clamp are already lacking in exact accuracy at the low levels, I do t think it would be a problem

What would you recommend to get around the hantek having the short bnc cable? Use a bnc extender cable or use a longer usb cable from the pico to laptop? I have been annoyed a bit by that part of the hantek

I really enjoy your videos and find them immensely beneficial in enhancing my fundamentals in using various diagnostic tools, however without wiring diagrams its difficult to move forward. i would like to know how i can obtain or subscribe to wiring diagram providers. USA companies restrict subscriptions outside the US and I'm in South Africa. Enjoy your day.
I understand the difficulties! If you work on single brands often, I’d subscribe to the manufacturer for their info.
I am in contact with some guys called eManual Online. I’ve not looked at much yet but worth having a look , they said they do wiring diagrams too
Could you please tell me if it is possible to use the Pico current clamp with a Hantek oscilloscope or is there connection or other compatibility issues that prevent these clamps from being interchangeable between these two manufacturers? Thank you
It’s fine, you can use most BNC connector probes with most other oscilloscopes. That’s the good thing about all these accessories; you can keep them if you decide to upgrade your scope 👍
Hello MM.I have a question you might be able to answer? Let's say I have access to the 4 wires from 4 fuel injectors, which get switched to ground via the ECU. If I put all 4 wires inside my amp clamp, will I be able to view all four injector traces in succession on my oscilloscope? I realise that if I put the clamp around a single common feed wire it would achieve this, but I am just curious if 4 conducctors pass through the amp clamp, what the outcome would be?

Which one should I prefer getting first, an oscilloscope or a scan tool?
I’d say scan tool, this will give you the direction of what you need to test with an oscilloscope. But get a good multimeter before the oscilloscope; and learn how how to use it 😁
@@MechanicMindset Are these scan tools region-specific? I'm from the Maldives. We mostly use Japan made cars. Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, and Suzuki are the most widely used brands here. People here mostly recommend buying an Xtool PS70 Pro, saying that it's the least costly, professional grade tool on the market. But it actually costs around 700 us dollars! I'm wondering whether the little red scan tool you showed a few days back would suit for me as a beginner! Do you think that one will do for Japan made vehicles too?
@@roseelectronics4582 The ThinkTool Mini should be a good start. You can upgrade the software easy if you use one brand more. Read codes, live data and perform basic service and maintenance functions 👍

9V batteries are not cheap. I bet I've spent the difference in price between the Hantek and Pico on batteries and not counting the aggravation of having a dead battery. And it's not necessarily forgetting to turn the Hantek off (although that happens to everyone) the Hantek switch moves way too easily. I swear you could breathe on it and it would turn on. The Pico has it's own aggravation, while it does save batteries by turning off, the turn off timer is wayyyy too short. Not sure I've ever finished a task without it turning off in the middle of whatever I'm doing. It's not like it stays on because it senses activity. So, I push the zero button while choosing a range on the Pico while hoping I don't forget to turn it off, and I remove the battery on the Hantek when not in use.
Time for a BNC+ 😅😆

@@howlinhog the latest Pico, it has slightly different BNC connections and can supply power to the clamp so you don’t need batteries 😁
@@MechanicMindset An amp clamp that requires batteries can operate without any by using the new style BNC connection? Not that I'm going to buy one anytime soon. I'm already way overboard with oscilloscopes. Pico 4000 (or 4000 something, I can never remember) 4 channel scope, Fluke 190-204, Fluke 124B and a little single channel Zotek (which is kinda awesome by the way for $70). Oh yeah, and two old Fluke 97s I've had since the nineties. One doesn't work and the other I can't move one channel down on the screen.
What about the pico 2205A, is the same for using in automotive than 2204A?

Being more of a hobbiest mech now, I bought the same hantek. It works great but afteraa short time I really get irritated by the short lead...
I bought them first, but had always used the Pico clamps at work. You could buy a BNC extension lead….or make one maybe 👍

as rancid as it gets, when you then saw it was the Picoscope that should be the scope.. then you can conclude that any aspect of neutrality is out with the bathwater.
if you wanna test things, then keep it apples to apples and use some neutral reference.. fx a third-party scope... and don't show that you already heavily into bed with one maker... its just makes you look dirty.
and if you dig a little deeper.. you will notice english dude. trying to paint a narrative in a bias way hence this english company "Pico scope/tech"..this clown is so heavily into bed with Picoscope going thrue his videos.. that it stinks when he wanna try to comes across as "honest views".

and why not open up the clamps, show the internal.. as that matters way more... but yeah would not suit your pico-loaded narrative.

and weird' how you take that 0.4A difference on the Hantek as a hmm.. yeah is a bit.. uhh not ideal, but you can likely still use it for certain things, and almost concluding it as a negative.. why?? 10:40 it does look like its the HantekCC65 that likely is more accurate on that particular measurement' as the Pico clamp are starting from minus...
- look at its starting line, its not at 0. 10:15 the Hantek keeps its baseline more accurate.
but I don't understand why you don't test it' with a given current-value to show the viewers which are best. and most accurate.. its so easy to make a test with a known current source, and you cen even validate it with a DMM and see which are in fact most accurate and best, - and as you title claims.
but whatever' when you dont even wanna open it upand show the component board, I doubt you looking for real answers..
