    Update: I finally got to actually play a character funnel. The Judge ran Sailors of the Starless Sea and it was a phenomenal experience. I think I'd up my evaluation of the style at least two more to a 16. Looking forward to playing future games with my surviving peasant!

      I was watching another youtube review that was a few months old, and they mentioned that the overhauled this system and is more in line with B/X style. Does that hold true in light of this review?

    Just ran a 0-level funnel last weekend and my players had a blast roleplaying their poor stats and their peasant backgrounds. And these are all seasoned D&D players. They had so much fun roleplaying these peasants that we barely got into the meat of the module because of all the great roleplaying. I think this game is breath of fresh air for those who are tired of the gamesmanship that comes with how many people play modern D&D.

      Agreed. Love or hate the system I can't really see how style was so low, if DCC only had one thing going for it it would be style. Obviously that is just my opinion, and its your channel, but I was very shocked to see that low of a score. I pretty much agree with everything else you said here.

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  4 роки тому +4

      @@deathmetal926 Keep in mind on the scale a 14 is 'GOOD'.
      I value homebrew content, and considering the complexity of just ONE spell and the critical charts being what they are, adding a new class, especially a spell casting class that might introduce a bunch of new spells (say druid?) means a LOT of work for the GM. That's why it was rated so 'low'.

    • @deathmetal926
      @deathmetal926 4 роки тому +3

      @@captcorajus I agree, those reasons are why I don't want to use DCC for campaigns, however to me the style and flavor of the game being what it is, is the reason it is hard to do that, so I guess for a lack of a separate category, I can kind of get your reasoning, but to me DCC is by far the most styling rpg out there, but as far as your review goes I'm just arguing semantics at this point. I otherwise agree with everything you said.

    Love this system. My players had the same reaction that you did when they heard the funnel concept. In the beginning, they didn't think the funnel system would be much fun...they loved it. Great review! My friends and I played this game for 3 years and had many a character die (usually in a unique and often funny way). The thing I found fun was the total fantasy novel feel for the stories. Elric, Conan, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser all rolled into one. Plus, when my character survived I really felt like I earned something. Thanks again for your amazing and well thought out content. Always a pleasure.

  • @sunsin1592
    @sunsin1592 4 роки тому +4

    Also, since you mentioned criticals, I thought I'd share our super simple critical rules. You score a critical on a natural 20. Roll a second d20; 1-15=x2 dmg; 16-17=x3 dmg; 18-19=x4 dmg; 20=x5 dmg. You also roll a hit location die to describe the critical. For spells and devices, a natural 1 on the save results in taking a critical. If you roll a 1 to hit, that's a fumble and you lose initiative the next round. Simple, but fun. And it makes even lower level monsters more dangerous to high level PCs, since they might get that devastating critical that takes you out. I've tried other systems, but players seem to like this combo of simplicity and lethality. By the way, all PCs also get a 20 hp "kicker" at 1st level, which I cribbed from Hackmaster 4th edition. Offers a bit of a cushion at the early levels and offsets crits a bit. We still have a fair degree of PC death, but the overall balance has been good.

    Appendix N is the shit. I have read quite a bit from it, most recently Poul Anderson's "Three Hearts and Three Lions." I actually feel sorry for D&D players who have not read Conan or Lovecraft. Where do they get their ideas for material? Video games?
    DCC is an absolutely beautiful book that I own but have not gone through carefully because I prefer versions earlier than 3.5. The way you describe "luck" is almost the same way as they did in "The Bard's Tale" (speaking of video games).

So, it really doesn’t bother me that the system cannot easily be used with old school modules/adventures. I really like what I tried so far from the DCC Quick Start PDF that I bought off of the Goodman Games site. I have finally bought the full game which I hope to receive soon and have downloaded the PDF included in the price. But, I was very disappointed with the dice selection on their site. I actually want to buy and use the dice (as others have mentioned, there are ways to play without buying special dice). I decided to buy some dice from the site, even though they were quite pricey and not really what I wanted design- and color-wise. But I was stunned that Goodman was going to charge me an additional $11 for shipping! No thanks. I went to amazon, and I personally think their selection of these unusual dice was really crap. Concerning the specialty dice... Several companies make just the extra dice needed (6 of them) and they go for $6.99 a set on Amazon ($19.99 for all 14), HOWEVER, they are plain and ugly and it seems like twice a year, someone on kickstarter is doing a run of funky dice in some custom/fancy color scheme. If you back/buy a couple sets together, they seem to run about $14 to $16 for a set (otherwise it winds up being about $25 for a single set). I've done this several times and now have 6 sets of funky dice plus the Koplow games set of 6 off of Amazon.

Our mage cast enlarge on the other party members and we wiped out an army of about 100 enemies who had to hit a def of 26 since we all had magic shield, and we had bless from out cleric. the power gaming aspect in this system isn't hard to abuse and our campaign experience is suffering for it.

I asked him to try it and unless he found he wasn't having fun, we could talk about playing something else or 5E again so he came around eventually.
      I did let my players pick their class, I let them roll 3d6 7 times and place their stats where they wanted and drop the lowest roll. Nothing too major just a few concessions. We ran several funnels prior so I didn't feel as though it was taking much away from the experience.

    I've always taken the view that time travel from the future to the past is impossible because God prevents it to protect the integrity of the timeline in His role as the existential ground of being and upholder of reality. Travel to the past creates the possibility of changing the past which wrecks the timeline so it is not permitted. Conversely time travel from the past into the future is entirely natural. We call it living. However people from the past using knowledge in the present to change the past they originally came from is self-preventing, because if they changed the past, they themselves would never have wound up in the future, and therefore whatever attempts to change the timeline they make don't happen.
    Since Blackmoor is canonically in the deep past of the Mystara world, as a timeline it is protected not by God, but by the Immortals, especially the Immortals of Time and Earth, and of course Ka the Preserver and the great Spell of Preservation. Ka as an Immortal predates Blackmoor because he ascended to Immortality during the Dinosaur Age. Either he didn't have the power, or he wasn't interested in preserving Blackmoor as a society and polity. Only the Blackmoor Elves are included in the Hollow World as worthy of rescue from that time, apparently. The Spell of Preservation which preserves cultures and races from after the Blackmoor period necessarily has to prevent any attempt to stop Blackmoor from disappearing, since those cultures depend for their existence on the disappearance of Blackmoor to have been able to develop later.
    Since the modules exist, predicated on time travel backwards in time, it has to be assumed that Ka and the other Immortals, and the Spell of Preservation are working in the background to make sure nothing the players do can stop the destruction of Blackmoor, the planet shifting its axis etc, so that they cannot cause their parents to never exist or whatever. The scale of the devastation after the times the players may get to visit is such that all of the family lineages they affect come to an end anyway, and none of their own depend on ancestry from Blackmoor directly.

    There is another point to the funnel that you missed. It introduces the lethality of the game. When players are accustomed to 3.5, 5e, or Pathfinder they assume that they are super heroes charging through the countryside laying waste to all that stands in the way. That is not this game.
    The cruelty of the world must be instructed. In the end this is a gonzo game of horrors where characters rarely live above fifth level.
    Everything that a modern player understands about role playing has to get tossed out the window. Old school play is entirely different. The funnel exists to make this happen.
    That is why you do not simply create four characters and keep the strongest. Players would learn nothing and die even faster with the character that they get attached to.

    • @captcorajus

    There is a trend to sell more dice. Even regular 5th-edition D&D now wants people to buy sets of dice which have jumped to 11 dice from 7. You used to need only d4, d6, d8, d10, a "tens" d10 to roll percentiles as well, d12, and 20. But now the standard is 3 more d6's to make 4d6 for ability score determination during character generation, and a 2nd d20 because you'll need one for Advantage/Disadvantage rolls. So 11 is the minimum in a "set". DCC: even worse with 14.

DCC seems to me like more of a Hackmaster style parody of DnD that's meant to be a beer and pretzels laugh game. The idea of the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker going down into the local dungeon is extremely ridiculous. Oddly enough, the only part of DCC I enjoy playing is funnels though. When Im in the odd mood for a one off joke game of "Bowling for PCs" the funnel fills that perfectly. The comical art definitely reinforces that goofy/silly style of play. Seems like you wanted to not like the game and then found out is pretty good, but still had to find something "wrong" with it. Honestly, it doesn't seem like you've played it at all.

      $19 is expensive for dice. Specifically complete sets with the correct 14 dice. Those not missing specific dice like the d5. I suggest you 'relook' on Amazon at the set offered more closely.
      It isn't D&D. I also said that that wasn't a 'bad' thing. i think you are exaggerating my criticisms my friend. I loved this game, and I thought that came through in the video, as i said 'minor' nits.

      That is weirdly defensive seeing as the review was really positive.
