Husband Changes My Ostomy Bag... FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER! | Let's Talk IBD

  • In honor of Ostomy Awareness Day on Saturday, October 7th, my husband wanted to change my ostomy bag! This is a really good idea to have your friends, family member, or significant other perform just in case you are unable to change your pouch. I am really proud Zak knew what he did about my stoma, the ostomy flange, the pouches, the barrier rings, and all of my other ostomy supplies to the extent he did! He's only ever watched me changed it but never participated. Next time, I say we have him attempt with no help! :)

I don't have one and unfortunately due to the nature of what's involved in my care with bathrooming it's to private and personal to share. Although, a sad reality is that it often does get filmed for educational purposes and stolen then being twisted into things that it isn't and in the long run harms and shames those who need the support with such things. That said, I did share the video because it depicts well how uncomfortable needing such things can be because many people assume needing help means it's wanted and we are ok with it and that's not always the case.

This was one of the most moving videos ever! You show how with love and humor you can have a great time even in awkward moments like this. And for anybody who thinks maggie doesn't need to be embarressed I am sure she knows that too but we all have situations were we can't help ourself feeling a certain way. Thanks for sharing this great moment.

I have had mine since December 20th of 2022. My hubby and 21year old son both or in some situations one of them or the other have helped me change my bag every single time. When I have been in a wound care offices I have been terrified I would look silly not ever having done it alone. I am so blessed becaise I have a HUGE hernia which makes things even more difficult. Someday soon I will learn how to change it myself. I have super sensitive skin and have had leaks so many times we change every other day most of the time. I am just now becoming more comfortable with opaque bags, filters, and am starting to do some parts by myself. I’d be lost without their help and love them so much for being so self less even when I know they are not in the mood to mess with it. I will be having a colectomy, hernia repair, and loop to end stoma change soon and am hoping I will learn at that hospital stay to do it myself. Thanks and I love this video!!!! ❤❤❤

@@cgomez77 You have huge resilience for hardship and your faith must be very strong, that you can say this sentence: " I am so blessed becaise I have a HUGE hernia which makes things even more difficult." It's an ironic statement. I do know what you mean, but I'm impressed w/ your attitude. I don't have a hernia or an ostomy bag to change. It's a very different set of trials, and I am having a very hard time seeing the blessings right now. God bless.

@@cgomez77 my wife has changed my bag Everytime for the last 3.5 years she is 100% my rock. I am a germaphobe and changing my bag gives me super anxiety. And it seems like I'm doing brain surgery it just seems to much for me. A month ago they started the reversal process so they took out the colostomy and now I have an ileostomy, and this is so much harder than before, and now my wife is 6 months pregnant so now I'm changing my bags and it's anxiety city but my wife needs a break. We are under so much stress because this new one leaks all the time and I can't wait for this to be over. It's so much harder than the colostomy bag. I feel helpless lost . And I still have a month and a half or so left of this torture. I used to be nervous about getting everything all hooked up again but I literally cannot wait.

Every ostomate needs someone who knows how to change their appliance. I had open heart surgery once, and pretty much couldn't move for a week or two. My wife had to change my bag. I never had to ask her to do it again, but if I had to, I know she could do it.

Zac a huge round of applause.
I remmber shaking in the storeroom when I was told to do a Stoma Bag and Flange change for a pstient back then the products were not as flexible or varied.
The patient was so kind to me as the stack of nope cut the wrong size increased and my hands shook with a stern Ward Sister watching my every move.
All I can say is heck did it give me a taste of how challanging having a Stoma could be and I took that patient with me thro 40 years of Nursing.
When I became a Ward Sister I was always grateful for the patient who had a Stoma, who allowed my Students and Trained Nurses to practice doing a full change.
The biggest advice patients gave me was to encourage to allow a friend or family member to regularly do Stoma Care and change especially if a change with products.
Then there is always someone other than themselves who know what the products, how to use and how Stoma behaves so if worst case scenario they can not do Stoma there is someone who can step in and do what is required and if needed guide Nursing Staff on the ward.
So Zac that maybe first time and if Maggie you are comfortable make it a regular teaching/training session in hope you never need Zac's skills but if you do you know he knows what to do for you and Leroy.

I'm surprised this is the first time Zach has changed or it or even helped. I almost passed out on my 4th time changing mine and had to go lie down in bed. After that I had my husband help me. I take the bag off and clean up the barrier ring residue (there's usually a lot and it hurts to get it off near the stoma) and he puts on the powder, barrier ring and bag. I'm SO grateful for his help!

I have been really self conscious about it and anxious even still today. My wife changes my bag every time I shower, but in my situation I also suffer from a condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis and it makes it hard to change my appliance by myself. I can do emergency changes but my wife places part of a barrier ring in one spot and I can’t see it when I do it. I will be sharing this video with her because it’s such a great feeling having a partner who is not intimidated by helping out if we can’t do it ourselves. Much love and respect coming from here in Canada! Cheers and great channel :)

I wish I could properly express how meaningful and helpful each of your videos have been in my life. Thank you (and Zak) for all your courage, knowledge, openness, and dedication. My apologies for the lapse in memory, but do you have any prior videos or other content (instructional or otherwise) that demonstrated how to securely apply a Convatec barrier ring to a flange? With immense gratitude -

I'm incontinent from birth (Spina Bifida)i so I appreciate anyone's partner helping them in such a sensitive situation. Being willing to help with needs like ours really shows love on a whole other level. 💜 I just wish you wouldn't be embarrassed about your output. It's as natural as giving birth. It's life! Much love to your family! 💜💜💜💜💜

When I was sampling bags here in the UK, Pelican does a platinum two piece bag, where the circular piece on the baseplate raises slightly, so you can get your fingers behind it and press the bag on, rather than pressing on your abdomen. Then when you are done, just press it back down.

One month after I got my ileostomy I developed parastomal Pyoderma Gangrenosum. I had been really ill prior to the ileostomy and it was very difficult to manage the brand new ostomy with the deep open ulcers caused by PG. Chas and I tag teamed it with me being in charge of the keeping the ostomy in control and wound cleaning. Chas in charge of wound dressing and the new appliance on the ostomy.

How brave of you. So informative. While I do not share your condition I found this very interesting and very informative. You never know when circumstances may require you to assist someone, yes even a stranger. And there should be no shame in doing so. I would ask one question while we are not being modest; Is there any odder to be aware of? I cared for a loved one for a long time that had a trach and was on a respirator and this required training and intense care so I know such things can be demanding and uncomfortable for those that witness personal care and are in company. Be kind, be gentle and supportive. God bless you both.
