- Early performance of Matthew Fisher's classic with the traditional Procol Harum lineup. Recorded at Fillmore West,San Francisco, Ca, in november 1967.
Note the organ variations: some of them survived all the following years and were still occasionally performed in the 2000's. Great solo from Trower as well.
The sound quality is understandably low, but it can still be listened...
Thanks very much for sharing this important piece.
Saw Trower last Saturday at RIdgefield Playhouse. He gets better each time I see him and I see him every tour. Just an amazing guitarist. Nice to hear an old version of one of my fave PH songs.
I saw this gig and when they started to play I got an endorphin pleasure rush. They were AWESOME.
Thanks Jack
thanks Paul!
Um, wow. I've heard so many variants of this song that I've lost track, but for whatever reason this one got me to tear up multiple times. Spectacular work, particularly from Trower, and of course, Fisher (the original creator of the song). Surely the muses were assisting them on this day.
@williamtroth Yes, they were. I wish I could be there!
Put up more of that concert.
Actually, I do...I haven't upped most of it because of the sound quality, I'll probably add more in the future.
Greaf find. You're right about Trower's solo(And am I the only person who thought the solo on the live in Copenhagen DVD was all wrong, though I really Whitehorn's other work?). Thanks again.
@papajohnloki Sure…His comping on Magdalene was lovely, for example!
I have to make another comment.I keep coming here again and again because this is what they really sounded like when I saw them. There is some other good stuff of them on youtube, all polite and properly mixed, but this is the only one that captures the intensity of what I saw.Do you have any more from this concert?
An additional note - unless they're playing in a different key, I think your tape might have been recorded at the wrong speed. A slowdown of approximately 5% puts the organ intro at the beginning into the key of the album. (Also the piano solo, Bach Prelude in C, is back in C.)
wyatt8740 you're totally correct: as it often happens with these old recordings, the tape had been put at wrong speed, causing a change in key.
@Jack Ponissi Okay, I assumed so. My turntable's about 1.7% fast and it drives me crazy for a minute or so after I put a record on. Some day I'll add a potentiometer to the motor to adjust the speed! -- I also noticed the Salvo release of "Shine On Brightly" was fast, and the album version of "Light My Fire" was slow.
Not that I really mind after a few seconds, though, since the change in key sometimes leads to intriguing changes in mood. This version at this speed feels more "intense" somehow with the organ pitch transposed.
Wish I'd been born about 40 years earlier so I could have been at Fillmore, anyway. I love Procol.
Me too!
And yes, the Salvo remasters are really a problem in this.
I'm a lo tech.guy, let me ask my daughter if she can do it ,then I''l get back to you.I want to hear the rest of this concert even if you have to post it.
ditto to the Ball-who I otherwise liked(Still there'll be more etc)
@papajohnloki Actually I've red criticism about whitehorn soloing on this number from time to time…personally I like it, even if it's very different from Trower…
But I didn't enjoy much Ball on Repent…
Why were they playing in the dark?
I see…that was a PM, actually…No harm done, anyway, I guess.
