Well I just had my 80th birthday June 30th, and I still feel like I did in my 20's. I still take a tap class at Ole Miss, and I'm a hula dancer. I have 5 kids, 8 grandkids and 5 great-grands! I am truly Blessed!
I’m soon turning 70 feel and look great Work as a Millwright and put a lot of work in 58 hrs a week The secret to my health is eating healthy and staying active
+Velda Modestti When I saw the beginning of the video I thought holy ****. I had my daughter at 38 so at 16 I am 55. Honestly, I don't even feel 55 at least as young as 40's. I just went to my first concert in 30 years at 55 and it was a Korean pop(kpop) concert with coaxing from other fans my age and younger. I definitely need to get more fit. I want to be walking fast not slow in my old age.
***** I didn't deny that young people were immune to it but like you said yourself "young people are less likely to have health problems" that was my point. As you age there's more of a likelihood to gain more and more health/mental problems. Even if people want to play sometimes that's just not enough because of all the factors that come with aging limit our ability to do the things we once did in our youth.
Actually, regarding mental health problems - that's just not true and not factual. You are far more likely to have mental health issues when you are young. The highest suicide rates are among the young. When you get older, you learn to let so much go - you learn from experience that it's not worth it.
I just turned 27 so younger than most of these millennials and I don’t think 50-70 is old!!! I see old as when you can’t do the things you were once able to do. I know people my age who act old and sickly and then my mom who is 55 runs around with my dad who is 56 like they are a bunch of teenagers! They look like they are in their 40s and I hope to look like them when I am their age! This is 2019 let’s stop putting people in categories and let’s live! ♥️ I have three beautiful children and I am married to a wonderful man so at 27 I am so happy and can’t wait to see what my life brings to us.
There is so much age discrimination and it is so sad. Everyone gets old (unless they die young) and it's a good time of life - for me, it's great. I just feel sorry for our society that we think it's horrible to get older. It's not. It's society that tries to make it that way. I like myself far better than I ever did when I was younger. Life is so much easier and more enjoyable.
And some English teaching jobs say you are too old after 35. They also have very discriminatory job ads such as "female only" "no blacks" "30-40 years old only, etc.
I loved being a part of this video! Such a great message that we never have to deny our age when spend the time defying it! Thank you AARP for this amazing opportunity to support my fellow baby boomers!
+Donna Martini Good stuff. I am 57. It's interesting as a web and marketing consultant being not just the only woman on projects, many times, the most experienced having gotten into computers very early on.

+Donna Martini You are absolutely GORGEOUS! You look like you are in your early 40's! I am 56 and have been told I look 10 years younger than I am. I eat right 99% of the time, exercise every day, and still have an extremely demanding physical job that I love most of the time. BOOMERS RULE!
+Donna Martini Aying gracefully that's my motto. I love my white hair coming out and enjoy every single move of this Ad, that actually defines HUMANITY.
+Lee Sharon skip the dating sites and come on social media instead! check out my Facebook page called Club50LLC and let me post your pics on that! Happy to hear how healthy you are! xoxo
The real "old" people in the video are old. They are acting their age. Being old is not a disability, it is an achievement. We need to stop using old as a pejorative and remember it is just a relative term. Old does not equal infirm.
However people act and whatever their age, they are acting their age. Their age is a matter of record and their actions are observable. Surprise is a result of our assumptions/expectations not of their age/behavior.
There is a growing negative narrative about "oldness" by the younger generation that is disturbing. I am so glad this video addresses the issue head on.
When they said 50’s and described how people in their 50’s act I was literally in shock, I am 51 and most of my friends are in their 50s as well. All of them are in great health condition, from my brother in law riding mountain bike tracks, my good friend riding dirt motorcycles to my auntie that is 80 and does not miss any of her multiple salsa/zumba/yoga classes 😂
@@Jessicab-u7c that would be like saying everyone under 40 are Millennials, which is the colloquial term used, and not in a favorable light by the way.
Aww, this brought tears to my eyes. I'm 45 and feel so "old" at times (exhausted, hopeless, ready for the next life)...and then others, I feel like a 10 year old (scared, curious, excited to try new things). Seeing these people of all ages sharing, laughing, learning...it's what this life is all about. ❤️
This is just the beginning, @robo.bobbin! I’m 50, just went to college for the first time I got an associates, got my EMT basic, I went to Fire fighting school. My head still feels like I’m in my late 20s… just remember to stretch & get massages! Your body and mind are a gift 🎁
I just turned 45 and I feel the same way! I have no children and so I keep thinking I’m much younger than I am, but I remember I’m aging and get depressed and obsessed over it. This was so helpful! We still have much life to live! Hugs 🤗
The smart millennials are the ones who understand that age does not define a person. These are the men and women who will be successful in life. People over 45 are not invisible and are some of the best teachers you will ever have in your lives! This also goes for employers in the workforce that seem to think they only need young blood in the building. Companies that hire all ages will be around the longest because they get it! This includes all these new millennial businesses as well. It's not all about 18-35...Why not learn from people who have walked the walk of life? Yes, I'm old but I still have a lot to learn and have many experiences to teach others. It's not easy being a talk show host on UA-cam with the young viewership freely making their opinionated comments, but I still persevere because I want to help others avoid making some of the life choices and mistakes that I did. Cheers to 50+!! Dear Sybersue xo
+Susan McCord Well said! I wrote an article about Millennials (first given name Echo-boomers) vs Baby boomer because these kids are in a much different world than the boomers were. The tragic employment issue, no insurance benies, soon no SS, high college bills, low pay scales, competition from foreign workers and the result is poor loyalty, poor work ethic and a revolving door, They are trying to figure out where they belong. The older generation needs to teach and the Mills need the desire to learn from all they can! We're all in this together!
+tracey morris You are so right! We all need to stick together regardless of how young or old we are because we all have things to deal with at every age. There are also a lot of seniors without pensions, family support and high rent scenarios. We have to join forces to make things work for everyone.
I'm 48 and surprised at the ages the millennials in the video considered old.I remember being in elementary school in the late 70s and thinking someone is old when they get to 65, a senior citizen. I wasn't even 10 years old then. So it's surprising to me that many years later when people are living longer and heathier than before some of the millennials consider 40s and 50s old.
They're trying to play that young role. Which millenials are known to do. They try to make others older so they can seem that much younger. However, they too are turning 40 this year.
I'm 72 and called the "Dancing Grandma" in the suburbs where I live. I've been free style dancing (Tina Turner style) for a decade to Motown bands. I'm on the floor when every band starts before people start to come out and every time there are many young women who approach me saying, "I want to be just like you when I'm older" People say "I love you" and hug me all of the time. I feel 40 and probably act like it, too. The thing about age is that the older you get, the more you can get away with. I don't dress age-appropriately and have many young men gushing over me. I love it.
One of them said 40 was old. I'm 40 and have 2 brothers, 32 and 35. They are millennials but I'm a generation X child. I feel like we're the same in abilities and appearances and knowledge of current culture like social media and popular music. It's amazing how a category or number changes perceptions.
I don't want to shock these folks but I]m 85 - do 50 push ups. and 70 sit ups and a bunch more several days a week - travel the seven continents, write, photo, etc., etc.
I'll be 68 in a week, and I started skating at the age of 48. I know a man who recently celebrated his 85th birthday by inline-skating down the California St. hill in San Francisco. I'm also learning to skate at skateboard parks, and now that I'm retired, I can go to skateparks every day. Age is just a number. (And yes, I do have arthritis. Gotta keep movin'!) ;)
+Carlita Victoria As you were a part of this video, I am curious if you know where they found these millennials? Because as a millennial myself, I don't understand how one could think 50 is particularly old or how you could mime a 50 year old as one hobbling on a cane (unless you were miming a 50 year recovering from a significant knee injury after a downhill skiing accident or something). That is unless, the millennials in the video never actually interact with anyone other than their own generation... including their own parents? My own father is in his 50's and can out lift and out ski me any day. In short, where did you find these people?
+Eddie Falhaus no one who was filmed (including myself) knew what was going to happen, but I am pretty sure they asked the millennials to imitate an "old" person. The producers didn't tell them imitate a 50 year old. I believe these young people are no different than older people in that if someone asked me what young was, I would be saying 40! lol...it is about perception. So old to them was 50 and up. Young to me is anything younger than I am. These millennials didn't seem to create any other category in their mind. They just clumped all those ages together. hope that helped you understand.
+sergemodee the most important thing at any age is to be healthy! Without health, 20 can feel like 80 and that is why I love what I do (Wellness coach). No matter what I age the people I teach are, from youngster to millennial to senior, each keeps those skills for the rest of their lives. Very rewarding!
Donna Martini I think you hit it on the head. Most people in the video are able to do the activities since they are fit and healthy. I believe being obese ages people more than anything. Studies show that people who exercise in later stages of life are able to live longer and have better quality of life.
In present day, age can be almost anything people, themselves, wish it to be. It's the attitudes of ignorant others toward age that give it negative connotation.
I'm 42 and embrace being a middle aged Gen Xer and while I'm very comfortable in "adulting" but I also know how to have fun. I can do push-ups, lift heavy weights more than a lot of Millennials and Zoomers I know (no thanks to their more sedentary lifestyle). If there is a time machine, honestly I wouldn't go back to the time when I was a teenager or in my 20s. I like the way I am right now and wouldn't change a thing. I don't understand why we think of being old as negative. If anything being old equates to more wisdom which young people are sorely lacking at due to their inexperience. The reality is all of us are getting old and we must embrace this fact instead of negatively dwelling our ages. We need to stop glorifying youthfulness. Theres really nothing good or special about being young.
I'm 46 this year, and I'm an IT expert. That means for all you 'young people' :-) ... that i was part of building a serious part of your life, the digital life! I was there when the very first PC was built and sold, I even had one. Now i help secure power plants, banks, all our internet infrastructures. Yes ... we built all the stuff you all are using. So I wish .... that you all use this technology, and make the world even better!! Now you can investigate anything anybody says or claims. Go online, check different sources, different points of view in 10minutes! Learn, inform, make the world even more fantastic!!
Great advice! I'm old enough to wonder now how we did all those things manually (like manage finances, look up info in encyclopedias, etc). Technology truly has been wondrous!
Valked, if you are 46, by the time you became of age we had already made the PCs. Not the Microsoft ones, but we programmed what back then we called microcomputers. Baby boomers and older are the ones who made technology into what it is now. This is not to say that what you did is not valuable. I just wanted to clarify that.
I’m 71 and I feel like I’m 50. My mother in law died at age 99 and she was dancing the polka to the end and had a super amazing sense of humor. To any young people out there….you. Are still babes in the woods. Every age is a wonderful and glorious part of the journey. Please don’t discount us “old” people, get to know us and be amazed by all the things you can learn from us that NO school will ever teach you.❤
Oh, man, here we go again with the age thing. At first I cringed at this video, then I liked it, then I thought, well, this still doesn't really change the negative misperception of "old", it just changes the perception of how old "old" is; and that perception is based on physical ability--at least all of the examples in the video are about defying age in terms of physical ability. There are many people, including myself, whose physical abilities are hampered by disease or other chronic illness, so we might not have the physical stamina of someone 10 or 15 years older than us. And, there are plenty of people who can't do pushups or jumping jacks or dance like Donald O'Connor, or run the NY marathon at age 25. Why do we even have to characterize "old" in terms of ability or non-ability to engage in physical endeavors? Each of us at any age has special gifts that no one else of any age has. We will truly evolve as human beings when we can reach a point of being who we are and doing what we do without having to put it in the context of "age".
Thank you for saying this. I went from running 10 5K races in one year to being unable to walk without a cane, 2 years later, because of a botched hip surgery. I'm 55 so am I old now because I'm disabled? What I know I am is sad.
You said what I wanted to -- I'm mid-50s and have chronic illnesses that keep me from doing a lot of the things some of the "old" people in this video can do. But I do NOT consider myself "old" in that perjorative sense that most people have when they use the term. I still have a good life, and God willing, expect to have a good life for decades to come. Talk to me about "old" when I'm over 100.
@@shannon2748 I'm guessing because the average age is younger there (depending on the Asian country - Japan has an older average age). I have noticed that it is very age-conscious, at least in popular media.
Wow, I have shared this message everywhere. This was beautiful I am turning 65 soon and mentally I have been feeling like I am 80. That’s not who I am. I was always exercising dancing, etc. and I have stopped doing all of that since Covid been very depressed, and this message has helped me very much. Thank you.
I am almost 60 and have never been happier, more active or more engaged in art, business, family, love, learning and good healthy and spiritual balance. This was wonderful to watch. And I applaud each of the men and woman shown who were willing to see things in a new light.
Literally caused me to tear up. It COMLETELY aligns with my core statement over at my channel, -that we are "tackling life's most UNDERESTIMATED season with intentional action (and a big dose of self love). Brilliant, AARP. Thank you for showing the world that we are able, we are determined, we have a voice, and we have much to contribute, STILL. Peace! ~Toni💚
I don't blame the younger people in this video for their opinion on age. It is our society - more specifically the way advertisers promote products and services to younger people and forget everyone else. Once you enter your 30's you are forgotten about. Technology is also the problem and how it is marketed, do you see older people in a smart phone commercial? No, everyone is in their 20's or even younger. I never really cared about age, it is definitely how you feel and one thing I have noticed is that I have never stopped learning. I am more curious about everything than when I was in my 20's.
So true. Have you seen those advertisements that say "If you are over 40, you may be at risk for a heart attack, and it shows a man and woman who look 80.
I visited my mother in the retirement home yesterday. Some of the residents 70s+ were sitting in the common area with their phones texting. It's what people of every age do when they aren't interacting with each other,
I asked one dozen people "How old do I look ?" (this picture is many years younger), and I'm 64 . I was told early 30's, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 45, 46, 48, 50, 55, and finally the oldest was omg 60 lol ! I suppose I look to be in my mid 40's, by all the guessing and averaging it all out. Which is pretty good, and 20 years younger than I really am. I guess people see others in a different perspective, because that's about a 30 year age gap !. I feel great, and I'm more active now then when I was in my 20's !! When I look into the mirror, I see a young middle aged person, and I'm proud of who I am, and how well I've taken care of myself. And I guess that's all that matters! Ageism is discrimination, and flat out wrong! Age is really only a number, and we can look, and feel great at any age. So just take good care of yourself.
This video was so eye-opening and joyful. It made me smile just looking at it; this bond between two people, this beautiful thing that shows that age is just a number.
I don't blame millennials for believing anything over 35 is old. After all, when you're so young time tends to move slowly; you're always waiting for a time when you're in control of your own life... and it seems to take f..o..r..e..v..e..r. But when you *truly* come of age, time seems to go by so quickly. If you're a young person watching this, take note and take heart. Aspire and persevere. Lay down the roots of the future blossom that you will ultimately become.
Nope. Time did/does not go slowly at all. It seems like yesterday I was in high school and it will be 10 years next year! Age does not matter, it is just a number. Half the time I cannot even remember how old I actually am. Lol.
Well said. I realized how fast time went by from the ages of 15-20 and it's why I no longer consider 30-40s to be "old". If 5 years felt like only 2 years, imagine how fast the rest of life will go.. I don't consider anyone "old" until they reach about 65 now.
Be grateful you have your health at any age. It only takes one injury to wreck havoc on your whole life and it doesn't even have to be that major an injury. Attitude is the most important factor on having a good life or not.
Eh... forget "Millennials"... This is EVERY freakin' generation. The generation coming after Millennials are going to think of THEM as "old" in about 10-15 years from now. Just like Gen X'ers did before them, and the generation before, and on and on. "Inside every old person there's a young person wondering WHAT THE HELL happened??" lol
Truth is, it comes down to the individual. I was at a host family for several months. The elderly couple there (about 80) went walking everyday and did yoga everyday, too. They still held yoga classes and we're much more flexible than me. Also, their mind was young, too. But as for my grand parents, they are 70 and it is completely different. My grand ma smoked all her live heavily and well, it shows itself. My granddad grew bitter and lives in his own world where everything is like it was 50 years ago. I'm not saying they are bad people. But they arent acitve. They just live by each day and it is all the same. So really, its individual
Brilliant! I'm 56 (I had to think about that for a second ... I always feel like the first number should be a 3), a hoop dancer, concert photographer (rock, alt, punk), and chase after three teenage boys. The woman who said that she felt like she was in her 20s summed it up perfectly. Age is a number, not a stop sign.
+synchromorph I was in this video. It was a documentary and nothing else. We were in the dark until the last minute by the way. The millennials and the "oldies" were in separate rooms and none of us had any idea what we would be doing. The producers wanted us to be our natural selves. She wanted a surprise reaction and she got it! Just an fyi for any doubters out there. :-)
+synchromorph Lol, I think just the opposite, but I also think you are allowed to believe what you want to believe. I posted my response for those who want to know the truth.
+synchromorph Lol you couldn't be further from the truth as far as brainwashed and why are you so angry? This is such a feel good video. Maybe you can find something more horrifying to get upset about. In the meantime, check out any of my websites or linked in or Facebook if you want to see how out of the box I am. Feel good! :-)
***** A very late reply ... I'm sad for you because you seem so unhappy. I am neither brainwashed nor unintelligent, but you are ... whatever age you are ... bitter AF.
Exactly. I have heard some women say they feel old at 30 though....maybe it's because they have kids or are just out of shape. I hear it all the time: people 30 and above calling themselves "old", so no wonder many people agree with them. I once knew a 19 year old who grunted when she stood up and she said "gosh I am too young to sound like that when I stand up:. She said she had the body of an old granny. Yes, people are out of shape these days and they eat crap food.
Makes me even more sad that an inoperable back injury and irreversible chronic autoimmune disease has left me old already in only my late 40s. Those decades older than me who say they feel the same as they did in her 20s... lucky. So lucky.
But I hope you can realize that your inner life is really the most important thing. That you can be young in your mind even when your body doesn't cooperate (I have chronic illnesses, so I know what you're saying -- and I'm in my mid-50s). Physical abilities do not make a person young or old -- there are plenty of people with disabilities who have lively minds and joyful lives. That is what "youth" is to me.
Excellent video. Young folks say what old is. Then they find out. I can relate to this. When I conduct my Outlook or Computer Magic seminars, I love having young folks in there. They're shocked this old lady showed them how much they didn't know. I let them know that my generation invented all this stuff. And it's gotten way easier than it used to be. Y'all can get old and be old all you want. I'm not having it. I've disrupted it.
A very very few of Peggy's generation invented all this stuff, as she put it. But the average Generation Y developed it and that's why it is easier now. Give credit where credit is due.
I'm 63 and I don't do any of those slow physical movements when crossing the street or texting ect. I had a good laugh watching those young people's descriptions. Thank you young people. Main thing is to stay in shape.
I knew someone who was turned down for a Silicon Valley tech job because the 27 year old H.R. director said “We don’t hire people over the age of 30”. 🙄 I assume that person then resigned due to old age 3 years later?!
It's crazy because I look young, and I still consider myself young but I've been experiencing a type of ageism and I find it really odd. The moment people realise my age, they change their tune.
My name is Rosie Gibson. I am 74 and an active NPC competitive bodybuilder. Preparing for the NPC 2017 Nationals for my pro card. I have been in 17 shows and I am Oregon State champion 1st place winner. Im also a massage therapist.
Rosie!!!! Nice to meet a fellow female health and fitness enthusiast. After seeing over the last couple of years, Ms. Ernestine and Dr. Josephina Monesterio go viral, I've wondered how many of us like-minded ladies are out there. I'm Dee and @ 60 I am also an active NPC fitness/figure/physique competitor since 1979. Originally Seattle born and raised... I grew up with the Emerald Cup through the 80's. I recently joined AARP and I am just now coming upon this little piece and I love it!!! Over the last couple of years I've been getting subtle messages... some not so subtle that us babyboomer aged individuals are not marketable. I am happy to see this changing. They say that 60 is the new 40....:) I hope you were able to achieve your goal last year....best of luck to you for the coming years.
When people say "tell me an age that is old" people have different interpretations. When you ask a little kid in early elementary school or not in school yet, they say 'old' is 10-13 years old. When you ask a 10-year-old, they say 16-20. When you ask a 18-20 year old, they say 40 or so. When you ask a 40-year-old, they say 70+.
twinsister27 When I was about 6 years old I remember my grandmother asking me what age I thought old was and I replied “a million”. Five decades later I stick by my childhood statement!
This is... wonderful. It made me smile. It even made me a little teary. Inside each elderly frame lies the heart of a tiger. The person inside isn't who you see on the outside. You'll better understand this as you make your way through your life and see for yourself that who you are inside doesn't always match the image in the mirror. You may find yourself wanting to do more, learn more, experience more, love more... because with each day you have less time and need to grab every moment that you can. And to the millennial-bashers, please keep in mind that we were them once, too. They're young, they're still learning many lessons and trying to make their way in the world. Instead of ripping on them, why not inspire, uplift, help and cheer them on? At the end of the day, they are walking the same path that we've left many years ago. I wish you all well, and may your insides never match your outsides. Stay beautiful.
Someone's comment made me realize what it is that really bugs me about this video. On the one hand, I think it's great to show that age doesn't necessarily limit people on what they can do physically. But there are a slew of us in our 50s and older (and younger, too) who deal with chronic illnesses and/or disability that precludes us being able to dance or do martial arts, or maybe even just walk around the block. Still, we are not "old" in the sense most people think of. We still have sharp minds, we can still have a rich inner life, we can still engage with and enjoy friends, be creative, continue to grow in so many ways, ways that do not require physical prowess or strength. It's the GROWTH that matters. As long as we keep growing inwardly, we are still "young". (Not that we need to define it with that term.) We are still VITAL. I think that's the best word for it. You don't get "old" in the negative sense until you lose your ability to choose life.
I loved working with Burch and I loved being a part of this video! This video taught me so much about what old really is. There is no number to put on it.Thank you AARP for this incredible opportunity!
Love it. Ian 75, Kayak, hike, so pushups and sit-ups everyday... and write at OEN and take photos and win competitions and...... my mom lived to be 102...so I am middle aged
OMG! What a beautiful ad! When I was in my early twenties I thought that 35 was old! I am now 60 and I work in a physical job where I am running circles around 20 year-olds! The woman who says “As long as I’m growing and learning then age doesn’t matter” is exactly right! And we shouldn’t be so invisible as we grow older!
I am the reverse of your age -72 - and, when I was 27, I thought of 40s as being middle age, but 50 as old. Then, an amazing thing happened. As I got closer to 50, the "magic" age for being old slid further and further down the chronological scale. When I was 50, I thought "old" began at 75. Now, I think it is closer to 90. In my 72 years, I have learned two things about what it means to be "old." One is that it is a state of mind, not a number of years. Some people are "old" at 35 because they feel and act old. The other is that it is a matter of perspective. And what it boils down to for me is that "old" is someone who is older than me.
@@dickwarren5087 that is true. I'm 27 now. When i was like 20 i felt like 25 is old, 30 is old but now i realized looking back i was so young and my current age is the both the youngest and oldest i'll ever be. The only thing that makes me feel old is the few accomplishments i have. I feel pressured that i'm still not stable financially and haven't really found that career that i'll do for a long time.
At 68 I still do 100 pushups a day (the correct way); I do kickboxing (Muay Tai) for an hour on Saturday mornings; I take Salsa dance classes on Saturday evenings; I go to the gym 4 times a week; and I stay active riding my bike on Sundays. Not slowing down now.
As the gentleman correctly said, 'when people start stopping, that's when they start getting old." I am 52 and I do hill sprints, weights, cardio straight push-ups. It helps to keep me strong and no way do I look like 52. And you never stop learning. You grow with every experience so you do become wiser. I remember thinking 30 was old but when I got to that age people kept mistaking me for early 20's and even now they always guess my age at least 10 years younger. You just have to care your body and mind, do not abuse yourself, laugh a lot, be kind to people and animals, think positive and love God.
I love learning from elders. They have experience and wisdom. Hang out with many of them and they are very eager to pass on their professions and experiences.
I'm a 50 year old long haul truckdriver non smoker non drinker .Always have hustle in my step and prepare healthy meals in my truck.I feel like I'm in my 30s.Its all about diet and attitude.
A couple years ago I was involved in a project with a number of much younger guys. I don't remember how we came to the topic health and exercise but we started doing push-ups. The young guys all crapped out between 20-25 (some didn't even make it that far). I gave 'em 50 just for good measure. I know they didn't expect that!
Excellent video. I enjoyed it. I am 77 and my brain hasn't slowed down. I love seeing the positive depictions of senior people. I love seeing positive attitude to people of all ages.
I'm 47 yrs old with an 27 yr old son. I take care of myself because I want to live to see 100 yrs old. I roller and ice skate, ski, still go to amazement parks and most importantly exercise. I have no health issues and when I'm out and about I get hit on by young men my sons age 😘😘😘
Really enjoyed this video! I'm glad that misconceptions about aging and "being old" are being dispelled. Just because one is over a certain age chronologically, it doesn't mean that life has stopped and that one can't live a rich, fulfiiling life. The people shown in this video are proof of that and there are many more like them. And even for those who do have some degree of age related limitations, it is still possible to live a fulfilling and rewarding life.
I kept this link on my desktop and just watched it now. And WOW... boy does this need to be said. I'm turning 70 this year and I have to say, I get SUCH a big kick out of telling people to guess my age, then watching their eyes bulge when I tell them my real age. It tickles me, but it also makes me feel like a bit of an "Ambassador" for my age group to let younger people know that although old can sometimes feel the same as "infirm," in a lot of cases, it's more of an "adaptation" with some pretty strong payback in terms of how much more experience we gain, say, having lived through the tumultuous times of the late 1960s and early 1970s. It gives us a wisdom to balance issues like "how bad is bad today?". And at the same time, I feel for my younger friends too because I was pretty dismissive of "older square people" in my day. Cheers to AARP for putting this out. I love it. I love younger people... they are our future.
When I was 16 I called my sister old when she turned 20 as a joke, but at the time, it also felt incredibly old to me. Four years seems like a decade when you're sixteen, and now, three years later, twenty years could pass by in a second and I wouldn't notice. I still don't want to be 20 because then I won't be a teenager anymore, and in my 19 year old head, 20 is old to me. But old doesn't mean not able to do the things you could when you were younger, is just means not a child. What these people assumed was old was what I call deterioration, which comes with age but only if you don't look after yourself.
LadyAtlantaTbilisi I had the same experience last year when I turned 20. It was scary and sad to me. I didn't want to lose my teenager status. Are you 21 yet?
This is so wonderful! I love all of us working together! When we understand one another perspectives we see the world differently. This is exactly what we study at my company!
I was surprised the younger people thought of 40-50 as old. Growing up as a child I thought of someone as old as someone that was in a rocking chair, so much older like over 80.
You consider old around 75 until you turn 75, lol! I find it humorous when people say they feel younger than their age (and often proceed to cosmetic surgery to align that). Well that IS what being that age feels like. It's kind of arrogant to think that oneself is special in some way.
@@Clariccy I agree...I know people in their 30's who are inflexible and gave up on learning after "school" ended. They are old in spirit, while some much older are younger.
I am going to be 51 this April. I love what getting older has taught me. Every day, I feel like a new person, wiser and more appreciative of all I have. The process of aging has taught me more than I could get from reading any book. Aging well is your gift to your soul, a life well-lived.
One day, these kids will hopefully know old. At that point, it would be good to have them watch this video again and have them explain what "ignorant" looks like.
This video made me cry thinking about my aging parents and how active they are. I am incredibly blessed with active parents who are also amazing grandparents. I've learned from them that your 50's and forward will be the best times of your life!
I turned 60 last month. I’m still a teenager in my head, except when reality slaps me with old age pains😊. I have several friends 18 to mid twenties, friends kids, grandkids, etc. When they found out I was turning 60, they said they didn’t believe it. Even though I am a disabled Veteran, I still go out, work on a farm, and I go out to do stuff with these young people, go to the fair to go on all the rides with them, stuff like that. I don’t act my age, except when my disease kicks my ass some days and except for the times I don’t shave, I hate shaving, but my facial hair is all white, these young people usually guess I am 20 years younger than I am. I am grateful to have friends of all ages, none of whom, including myself, care a bit about how old our friends are, we are just friends.
I like this video, I like how people of different ages connect, it's beautiful. I don't like how the word old is portrayed as a bad thing. I would imagine when some uses the word old to describe an object then that's means it outdated and needs to be replaced. But I think when it comes to people old means your gown up, hair color changes, body changes, it what happens. I can be be old because I'm no longer young. It's worse for me when you can't use a word to describe someone age, it's more of an insult to me. "This person is young while this other person, is not as young as they used to be." Hearing something like that feels like in insult, it still says "old" but in a socially conditioned respectful way, which really is just condescending to me. Over wording it and beating around the bush feels bad to me. I'm writing this because of old can't be used to describe a person then there needs to be new word. I can be young, I can be middle aged, I can be old, I can be really old.
Mature. We are mature. It encompasses life experiences that can only be gained by living long enough on this earth to gather those experiences. And it reflects respect, not discrimination. Just my perspective (more on my channel). I enjoyed reading your comment. Very insightful. Peace! ~Toni 🌺
Right on target! To me, the term "old" seems to imply "obsolete" and "no longer useful," as if we were machines that need to be discarded after a certain length of time! For this reason, I think that the term "old" can be rightly applied to machines and inanimate objects, but that it is not particularly suitable to describe people. We are not "throwaways" to be disregarded and discarded... HELLO? Generally speaking, Western society's concept of seniors/older people is pretty dysfunctional and could really use a good overhaul to bring it more in line with reality and basic human dignity. Some of the concepts we're fed about older people are pretty bizarre and condescending!
I'm 26 and before I got the part where they changed the peoples' mind on old age, I've always previously thought it wasn't until around age 80 when someone is truly old. My dad is 66 and still does construction every day. He can also keep pace with me on a walk and can climb stairs with ease. Watching him gives me hope that I still have a LOT of quality years in life left
LOVE this!! I agree soooo much with what the gentleman says at the end- about when you stop growing, learning, THAT"S what you get old. AMEN to that!! LOVE this video so! *applauds* You're only old when you stop relishing the good things in life n' growing as a person! ^_^ ♥♥
+Michael Giblock my dad just turned 73 he can do a karate kick above my head and i'm 173cm. age does not matter. it's health and how you take care of your body.
@Wuotans Krieger that was a three year old comment you replied to. my dad has since gotten dementia and is no longer physically fit to do anything. Age does change you I guess... I was wrong after all.
My Great Grandma was 96 years old when she died. She grew up in a farm and in the rice fields. One day, she over heard me talking about work OHS, back strains and looking after one's back in the workforce. She laughed hysterically, and told me that my generation was weak. And that a good days work in the rice field would solve any back issues. She never set foot in a nursing home. She showers herself without any help. She walks with no walking aid. She went to sleep peacefully and just never woke up.
Thank you for that beautiful story. My mother in law was 93 and still cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning her house some, and driving. Her knees were bothering her, so we got her a stationary bike and she used it daily, and strengthened her knees. Her bed was on the third floor of her home, so she climbed those stairs every day. Her car was in the basement, so she walked down. Her garage door was manual, so she lifted it when she wanted to go somewhere. She hiked and gardened. She also showered herself. She took care of her autistic son and picked him up from a busy city center on Fridays when the wait for his bus was longer, since he got off early that day. She got an iPhone and learned to FaceTime. When she fell ill, she lived only two weeks in a nursing home. Most of what killed her was the forced inactivity. ❤️

Millennials aren't the brightest. I'm in Generation Z, and before watching this video, I thought old was around 85. After watching the video, I think old is around 85. Sad these people think that anyone over 50 to be old.
Andrew Neal yeah for me anyone under 70 isnt old. I think retirement age should be bumped up to 70 due to increase in old people and a decrease in kids
That’s cos most gen z are kids of gen x. We are the coolest generation and we raising some cool kids. Millennials are kids of boomers and they all bonkers. My little boy and his mates gunna grow up and mock the whole selfie generation xx
I’m in my 60’s. The examples of how an old person would text were funny. Thanks for the laugh. Most days I forget how old I am due to acting younger. Great video!
Thank you for creating this video. Fortunately, I grew up with my great grandmother. I did all sorts of things with, but our favorite was tea time. I never thought of anyone under the age of 96 was old. I’m so grateful for growing up knowing that the day you stop learning, is the day someone is old. Let’s be kind to one another & honor each other’s phase in life. Cheers 😉🌷
Well I just had my 80th birthday June 30th, and I still feel like I did in my 20's. I still take a tap class at Ole Miss, and I'm a hula dancer. I have 5 kids, 8 grandkids and 5 great-grands! I am truly Blessed!
shirley stroud you have the same birthday as me! 😁
This is wonderful to read. You are an inspiration! I don't plan on allowing myself to get old. I'm presently 49 and feel the same as I did in my 20s.

55?! That’s not old!

"We don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing"
Try telling that to a 90 year old who has arthritis.
When you get older, you learn to let so much go - you learn from experience that it's not worth it.
is that a quote form the twilight zone?
I just turned 27 so younger than most of these millennials and I don’t think 50-70 is old!!! I see old as when you can’t do the things you were once able to do. I know people my age who act old and sickly and then my mom who is 55 runs around with my dad who is 56 like they are a bunch of teenagers! They look like they are in their 40s and I hope to look like them when I am their age! This is 2019 let’s stop putting people in categories and let’s live! ♥️ I have three beautiful children and I am married to a wonderful man so at 27 I am so happy and can’t wait to see what my life brings to us.
I totally agree with your comment and mindset! How's life in your 30s like?
Absolutely! ☺️
I's beautiful when people of different ages learn and experience something new from each other.
Big companies in Korea try to push workers out the door as early as 45. They say they are too old to continue working.
And some English teaching jobs say you are too old after 35. They also have very discriminatory job ads such as "female only" "no blacks" "30-40 years old only, etc.
Easier and enjoyable when you get older? Hardly. It gets worse when you get older.

The real "old" people in the video are old. They are acting their age. Being old is not a disability, it is an achievement. We need to stop using old as a pejorative and remember it is just a relative term. Old does not equal infirm.
depends on how one defines old and what does acting their age mean
However people act and whatever their age, they are acting their age. Their age is a matter of record and their actions are observable. Surprise is a result of our assumptions/expectations not of their age/behavior.
ah but not everyone views age that limited people of the same age can be vastly different in intellect, health, biology, outlook, interests etc
I know this is an old comment, but I love this perspective.

Yeah! It's an uphill climb for sure. The more good writers and bloggers on this subject the better!
+Dear Sybersue when millennials are going to become OLD SCHOOL 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
You don't have to read it :)
I think some of them look 40 lol
Well, they'll be pushing our wheelchairs.
It just goes to show you how stupid people have become...especially that one guy...he said 40 is old.
When I was in grade school, I considered 80 to be old, and I wanted to learn to fly when I got to be in my 90s.
I love it.

As you were a part of this video, I am curious if you know where they found these millennials?
Studies show that people who exercise in later stages of life are able to live longer and have better quality of life.
hahaha...Some of these people called 40s old????????? really? Are they crazy? I'll call myself old, maybe when I am 80.
Thank you for this video. So many people have out-dated notions about age. Mostly negative. Age is truly a number.

Age is just how long you lived in this world right?
In present day, age can be almost anything people, themselves, wish it to be. It's the attitudes of ignorant others toward age that give it negative connotation.
How are you doing
@@fredowen5103 Keep moving, scammer. The stolen photo & fake name is only fooling you.
I'm a Millennial but I'm with you all they way :)

I am 56 & agree!
Just not while you're walking.
Best comment I've seen on aging.
Thank you for saying this. I went from running 10 5K races in one year to being unable to walk without a cane, 2 years later, because of a botched hip surgery. I'm 55 so am I old now because I'm disabled? What I know I am is sad.
You should see how they are in Asian countries. They say 30 and above is old. People as early as 28 start sentences with "when I was young".

I was always exercising dancing, etc. and I have stopped doing all of that since Covid been very depressed, and this message has helped me very much. Thank you.
So glad to hear the message resonated!
I am almost 60 and have never been happier, more active or more engaged in art, business, family, love, learning and good healthy and spiritual balance. This was wonderful to watch. And I applaud each of the men and woman shown who were willing to see things in a new light.
Hello 👋 Judy how are you doing today?
It's what people of every age do when they aren't interacting with each other,
@@origamiandcats6873 No one talks to each anymore
Lay down the roots of the future blossom that you will ultimately become.
yapdog That is a lame way of thinking. And if you have time define old, should be anyone older than 25! At 25 is when you start growing old.
I'm 34 and I felt like an old man since I was 18. Nice to meet ya!
Thank you
Be grateful you have your health at any age.

They're find out when they too get "old", and the younger generation is calling them old!
A very very few of Peggy's generation invented all this stuff, as she put it. But the average Generation Y developed it and that's why it is easier now. Give credit where credit is due.
Not old, just older. Words to live by. Remember that millineals.
OMG. I'm so jealous of the guy with the 55 year old chick

That’s actully wrong because I’m 10 and I think that 60+ is old
That is wrong
I'm 35 and my 70 yr old mother in-law texts faster than I can. I try and respond to her text and she will have sent 3 texts in the meantime . lol
Hello Lynna how are you doing today?
Hello 👋👋
This is...
Hello Kelley how are you doing today?
Hello Susan how are you doing today?
Hello 👋👋
I'm 27 and I never thought 40's and 50's were old. It's a shame how people view age.
Ar Row at 27 you can still accomplish so much and have plenty of years to enjoy your accomplishments never give up💪🏻
I'm now 30 and I still feel the same way about age as I did 2 years ago.

Robert Bowersock Amen to that!!
I'm going to be 61 and i feel that others didn't see me for me and what I can do.
There are plenty of people in their 50s and 60s who have aged badly it's not about your age it's about how you take care of your body and genetics
I won't be old until the day after I die.
Kim Howell Good for You!!😍
Really enjoyed this video!
Well, looks like we Millenials are at it again!
Millennial definition of old is calling instead of texting.
Age doesn’t define us. Live life fully through respecting your body as a temple. Eat healthy, exercise and positivity.
What these people assumed was old was what I call deterioration, which comes with age but only if you don't look after yourself.
to me 20 year olds are like 10 year olds
LadyAtlantaTbilisi I had the same experience last year when I turned 20. It was scary and sad to me. I didn't want to lose my teenager status. Are you 21 yet?
So how are you feeling at 24 now?
@@KimmiiaS I wanna know too lol
Beautiful and inspiring, and I’m 54. Never too old to be inspired, learn and blossom. God bless.
Simply beautiful. Watching the old work with the young is a beautiful sight.
This is so wonderful! I love all of us working together! When we understand one another perspectives we see the world differently. This is exactly what we study at my company!
When I was in my 20s and 30s, I didn't expect to have a stroke at the 'tender' age of 53. that changes the game.
sounder9393 sorry to hear that
I was surprised the younger people thought of 40-50 as old. Growing up as a child I thought of someone as old as someone that was in a rocking chair, so much older like over 80.
I'm 22 younger than some of this guys and I consider old around 75
i consider old a state of mind
Clariccy True
You consider old around 75 until you turn 75, lol! I find it humorous when people say they feel younger than their age (and often proceed to cosmetic surgery to align that). Well that IS what being that age feels like. It's kind of arrogant to think that oneself is special in some way.
@@Clariccy I agree...I know people in their 30's who are inflexible and gave up on learning after "school" ended. They are old in spirit, while some much older are younger.
I consider old dinosaurs and artifacts is 70 or so really that old it is only a millisecond to the earth
I am going to be 51 this April. I love what getting older has taught me. Every day, I feel like a new person, wiser and more appreciative of all I have. The process of aging has taught me more than I could get from reading any book. Aging well is your gift to your soul, a life well-lived.
This is sobbering but refreshing and so true for so many of us......I am the first year of the baby boomers.....we all turned 70 years old this year.

And LOOK at the friendships that have NOW been made ! I love this for so many reasons !!
I really liked this video! It is all about our perspective isn't it!
I especially relate to the comment, "When you start stopping you start getting old"........ This affect everyone at any age.....
LOVE this!! I agree soooo much with what the gentleman says at the end- about when you stop growing, learning, THAT"S what you get old. AMEN to that!! LOVE this video so! *applauds* You're only old when you stop relishing the good things in life n' growing as a person! ^_^ ♥♥
I love this!! Just because you're older doesn't mean you aren't alive & energized! 🙂
Yes many young people think that when you get old you have to stop living and enjoying yourself , and just go die off in a corner.
Im 23 and my parents are in their early 60s, they don't act it though.. I think being old to some extent is what you make of it.
+Michael Giblock my dad just turned 73 he can do a karate kick above my head and i'm 173cm. age does not matter. it's health and how you take care of your body.
J Nielsen Tomer Absolutely I agree :D
Exactly. My mom is 68 and my dad is 73 and they can run circles around people in their 20s and 30s.

Please God..let my new beginnings start as this women's Grandmother life passed in her
Rest...
Please...I'm begging..you Jesus..

@Andrew Neal So being middle aged is young? Lol Sure dude.
@Wuotans Krieger 80 is old obviously. A person becomes old when they turn middle aged.
The Rolling Stones are a great example of being still productive and creative right through the years. They are fantastic people, God be with them.
Old but not obsolete.
Thank you!! No one ever told me what getting older felt like. I’m so surprised to still feel young in my mind…just wiser. Young folk need to know.
Yeah, but we all get there for real.
I’m in my 60’s. The examples of how an old person would text were funny. Thanks for the laugh. Most days I forget how old I am due to acting younger. Great video!
Funnily enough millennials are now considered "old" by Gen Z
Thank you for creating this video. Fortunately, I grew up with my great grandmother. I did all sorts of things with, but our favorite was tea time. I never thought of anyone under the age of 96 was old. I’m so grateful for growing up knowing that the day you stop learning, is the day someone is old.
