@@goldengolem4670 Engines is like a shield that decreasing damage by percentage instead of number of hits. It's good against rockets, and when there is bullet hell on the screen. But you can use stealth module instead which do the same, but more controllable.
It's just normal space crew life. Sleep in shifts, eat in shifts, BREATHE in shifts . . . Seriously though, it's a good tactic. It requires micromanaging to cycle it on and off, and it's an additional value you have to keep track of, but the bar of power is worth it. Granted, it's not available all the time, but any time not spent running the O2 can be spent in Engine for extra evasion.
@@joelsmith3473 Me too. I've been burned before by not being fully up and operational upon entering combat, so now I ALWAYS make sure all systems are fully repaired, O2 is at 100%, the right crew are at the right stations and all are fully healed BEFORE I hit the jump button.

My last run was kind of like this with the Fed C; I ended up getting two Flak I and one Flak II, along with fully upgraded Flak Artillery (and a Zoltan Shield!!). Yeah, the Flagship was extremely dead.
Balance in this games goes to absolutely nothing when you obtain minimum two laser guns mk2. but when it goes to 4 it means that fact that enemy takes 16 hits and there is no chance to miss all of them. Same with flak , just 12-20 small stones that impossible to avoid.
Ya I somehow managed to get 4 in one run once w/ a preigniter. It was one of my first runs. Everything died almost instantly. I ended up beating the first and second stages without getting a single hit, and I beat the 3rd with like 2 or 3 from the lazer attack. Easily the most op I've ever been in any FTL run. The only other time I was close is when I got 2 vulcans w/ preigniter once but that was much worse since it took a while before it got op.
Masterfully done, I don't know what it is about FTL but I just love it. I've played it for years and years but only beat it once before, once in 160+ hours. I know that's not a lot compared to what I have in other games but I feel so much of these adventures every time. It was always nice to sit down and try a new run, knowing I probably won't make it to sector 5 with my current run, much less actually meet the flagship. I didn't lookup guides or strats or anything, I did all I did just exploring it myself. Thank you for posting this video 6 years ago so I could find it now popping up in my recommended feed and I can gush over this game, and just remember how much joy it brought me to hear that title music for the first time, every time I opened the game, and most satisfyingly, after beating it my one golden time.

@@theevilmoppet because a fire will spread rooms before it dies if O2 is too high. But from what I read in other comments this practice is also used to prevernt O2 being hacked by the flagship which would pull the oxygen out of your ship way faster than it just decays
I see so many people go into the flagship fight without maxed oxygen, and it's such a massive risk. If they hack your air and you've only got 1 level of it, you have 3-4 hack cycles tops before your non-lanius are all dying, and if you have 2 air then you'll get an extra 3 or so cycles...
Not sure why this randomly got recommended 6 years later, but that does look like a fun build. However, the mismanagement of... almost everything was just painful to watch. This is an older video, likely with (hopefully) a new player so I'm not going to get into it, but despite an overwhelming advantage those fights were far closer than they should have been.
I ran a Federation Cruiser once with Twin Gatling lasers and a regular Halberd laser and a Fire laser. I had cloak; engi shield; cloning bay and a couple extra crew. I forget what else I had but I distinctly remember smashing the rebel ship so hard they had only 1 guy trying to man the whole ship by the second fight. By the third fight it wasn't even a contest because I set the whole thing on fire and by the time they had the flames under control it was game over. Most fun I ever had killing a ship since Battlefleet Gothic? Yes. Most fun getting to it? No on so many levels. FTL is stupid unfair

I had this setup on my last run but I had the C version of the Zoltan ship so I had a beam drone and defense drone Mk1 for the incoming missiles... I only took 3 damage. If anyone sees this and wonders why a Mk 1 Defense drone rather than a Mk 2... it's because the Mk1 focuses only on missiles and incoming boarding drones, and doesn't get distracted by harmless lasers that my shields would take care of.
Holy crap I had no idea how powerful flak cannons can be when used effectively. They were always just a shield killer to me. Also a little tip when repressurizing the whole ship, for some reason it happens faster when all internal doors are opened (obviously only do this when there is no risk of hull breach).

my favorite setup was 2x halberd beams with a quick Ion gun on a Zoltan ship.. I wouldn't care if the rebels caught up to me I would just cut their ship in a X pattern and they at least got a quick death..
Generally when I fight the flagship I try to go for the missile silo weapon first since it's pretty dangerous, and killing the guy operating it means it can't be repaired since none of the other flagship crew can move to the artillery spots. THEN I focus more on taking down shields to improve my DPS.

More Dakka is the way to go when I play FTL. Though preference has always been to go 4x Burst Laser Mark II, because you have better ability to aim at shields/weapons.
I like that the sound of Flak fire hitting a ship sounds like you're throwing a bunch of rocks at a car.

Defense drone can mitigate the risk substantially.

The first time I came up on the big boi, I had my ship vacumed out thanks to hacked O2 and some very unlucky breaches and fires.
If the hack does get on an important system, I usually destroy their hacking system first if I am not planning a boarding strat.
I love the fact that these great ships are being demolished by a rock ship attached with an actual Junk Jet shotgun

I had a simmilar Setup on the Lanius B once: Advanced Flak, 3x Flak Mk 1, pre-igniter and 2 Automatic reloaders. Was some big fun.

Nothing beats 2 flak 2s, 2 glaive and preingniter. Jump in, fire flak, and as soon as the shields vanish, twin glaives. I.e. The sven maneuver
