- If your toilet keeps running and the fill valve won’t fully shut off, this video will show you how to fix the toilet fill valve. If you have a Fluidmaster toilet fill valve (one of the most common fill valves), this video will show you how to quickly and easily replace the seal in the fill valve without having to replace the complete fill valve. I have replaced several of these and other than the trip to the store to purchase the seal (for less than $5), this has never taken me more than two or three minutes.
NOTE: It will take you longer to watch this video than it will take you to replace the seal in your fill valve.

Your video helped me save so much money. I spent $3.50 at Home Depot for the valve and followed your instructions to replace the old valve. The overflow leak stopped immediately. Cannot thank you enough! Great video!
Your video was incredibly helpful! I only spent $3.50 at Home Depot for the valve and followed your instructions to replace the old one. The overflow leak stopped right away. I can't thank you enough-fantastic video!
I’m so glad it was helpful. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for giving me the confidence to replace the seal myself.
This was the only video I found that helped solve my issue. The tank would fill but then would start making a hammering sound and would not shut off. I had to shut off the water supply. All of the other videos suggested replacement of the entire assembly. Replacing the seal fixed it. Thank you !
So glad it helped you out.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the informative video you provided. Prior to watching, I believed I was capable of handling the task at hand, only to encounter disastrous results and water spilling everywhere. After scouring through numerous videos, none seemed to offer the solution I needed until I came across yours. Your video not only saved the day, but also prevented a costly mishap and with my wife, who jokingly placed me on house probation. Without delay I've liked & subscribed to your page.
Wishing you continued blessings.

Well, I’m glad you came across my video, and I’m glad I was able to help preserve a happy relationship between you and your wife. Lol.
I was about to replace the entire fill valve, checked the gasket because of this video, and it indeed is torn.
Thanks for saving me some time and money!
So glad this video was helpful.
Thank you very much for this video. I was able to fix both my toilets, slow leaking, by cleaning the valve seals after you demonstrated how to access them in this video
I’m so glad it was helpful. Thanks for the feedback.
I hate DIY plumbing for fear of water damage. But you made it look simple and indeed it was. MANY THANKS 🙏
Glad it was helpful for you. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank u so helpful didn’t need to spend any money on a plumber 👍
I’m so glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Mine was slightly different but this video was an immense help. Thank you. The seal in mine was split into 2 pieces.
I’m glad I was able to help.
Great video, fixed my leak in seconds once I knew how to take the fill valve apart. Mine was different though same process
Thanks. So glad it was helpful.
I cringe whenever something goes wrong with the toilet. I was going to replace the whole fill valve but watched your video and it was just the thing to stop the spouting fountain. THANK YOU for an awesome video and "it's easy" presentation. It really was easy!
Glad it helped
I just replaced the entire fill valve due to a leak from the top. I wish I'd seen this first. Great video, liked and subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
This is so helpful, thank you!!!
You’re welcome. I’m glad it was helpful.
Thank you 🙏🏽 I fixed my running toilet with ease because of your clear instructions.
So glad the video was helpful.
Omg thank you so much! I can finally fix my slow filling toilet. So easy!
I’m glad it was helpful.
Oh yeah, TURN OFF THE WATER VALVE FIRST!!!
Thank you! This was easy to follow and very effective.
Thank you for the feedback.
Thank you so much for this video! You've saved me time and money!
I’m so glad it helped.
Thank you, this was my problem & why the water was running continuously! I was able to fix it myself for a few dollars!
So glad it worked for you. 😀
Well done video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
It worked, thank you sir
Glad it was helpful.
Thanks. Didn't even need to replace the seal, turns out there was a small pebble or something lodged in it causing the leak.
I still replaced it though. Very clear instructions, worked perfectly.
So glad the video was helpful. I have learned that most of these leaking valves can be fixed by either replacing the seal or simply flushing out the valve.
Thank you so much for making this easy. ❤
You’re welcome
Very helpful. Thank you.
I’m glad it was helpful.
Yep, you saved me as well. Bad seal. It was in 2 pieces. I didn’t understand what was wrong with it until i saw it was supposed to be a single piece lol. Thanks for the video.
You’re welcome. Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching.
Excellent. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Many thanks - you have a new subscriber. I see you have a lot of very helpful videos.
Awesome, thank you!
Before I drove to HD and dropped $20, i popped the valve open, inspected and cleaned the diagphram and plastic mating surfaces. Presto, FIXED ! (in 1 min, for FREE). I know i might need a new diagphram soon, but for now it might have built up calcium-scale or debris, causing a tad of water to leak. Thanks for the easy fix ! Cheers 🍻
...btw, i used an old toothbrush and a dab of hand-soap for cleaning. Also turned on the water valve for a 1/2 sec to clear the water in the pipe before putung the valve back together. 😎👍
Great information. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much.
The video is very well done.
Thanks for the feedback. And thanks for watching.
Thank you this was incredibly helpful and fixed our problem. In our case, there was nothing wrong with the washer inside the valve, but something had gotten in there to clog it up. The valve on the floor at the base of the toilet deteriorated, and pieces of rubber from it floated up into the fill valve area described in this video, causing it to not seal correctly and continue to run.
Glad it helped! I appreciate the feedback on what was causing your problem. I’m sure that will help other people as well.
Good video
Thank you
Thank you, this is really helpful! Question: my leak is coming down the arm of the fill valve. If I reset the cap the toilet fills correctly, but once I flush the leak returns and everything fills slowly. Not sure if my question makes sense…but does this sound like a seal problem?
I think I understand your question. From what I understand, I think the seal could be the problem. I think it’s worth $3 to buy a new seal and try to fix it. If that doesn’t work, then worst case you’ll spend about $15 on the new fill valve, and that will certainly fix it.
good job explaining this proceedure, I have replaced the stem less than a year ago, and started having over flow problems (from the flush handle, the tank is overflowing )about a week ago. I have adjusted the float to the correct place, and replaced the seal inside the stem. it's still leaking, any other suggestions?
I can’t say exactly what the problem is, but there’s obviously a problem with the fill valve other than the seal. I think you need to replace the entire fill valve and see if that doesn’t correct the problem.
You don't have to replace the entire valve, just the upper half of the stem. Some videos show how to do it. For me replacing just the seal never worked.
This video is very helpful thank you very VERY much. One question, I just did the replacement and it’s no longer spraying water, however I am noticing a little trickle of water is still flowing. Is this normal?or should I be concerned? doesn’t look like it’s overflowing 🙏🤞
A properly operating valve should shut the water flow off completely. If you still have a trickle of water, then there is still a problem. Did you flush out the valve when you were changing the seal as I showed in the video?
Are there any sugguestions for how to fix the seal from the tank to the water supply? Getting drips from the tank coming from that seal... do i need to replace the whole fill system or is there just a different seal to use?
I have never replaced just that seal, but I would assume that you can purchase a seal at Home Depot or Lowe’s or somewhere similar. Have you tried tightening down on the plastic nut that holds the fill valve in place?
What I don't understand is how that little metal pin's position inside of that valve seal controls whether water comes out of the overflow tube or not.
That is a very good question. Unfortunately, I cannot explain it either. I think that would be a great topic for some research and a new video. Stay tuned!
Thank you for the video! Why does the valve still appear to be running water even when the main water valve is turned off?
Are you talking about in the video, or on your own toilet?
In the video. Water still coming out when you took the seal out when you were replacing. @@morganinspectionservices3840
Thank you for the video! Just an fyi its not always the seal. I gonna try my best to explain it. The one i changed out today. The inside where u take off to see the seal. Inside it looks like a "white spider" mine broke off each of those legs and it was causing a whistle noise and toliet tank kept filling up and wouldnt stop.
Oh. Thanks for the info. I guess you had to replace the entire valve?
@@morganinspectionservices3840 yes
The old seal looks fine on mine, I've cleaned it but its still leaking, a lot while its filling and then when its stopped it changes to noisily dribbling out.
Is there something I've missed? I've just ordered a new seal but obviously if its not that then I've wasted a few bucks.
I’ve changed a couple of seals that looked ok, and it still fixed the problem. I’ve learned that bad seals do not always look bad. There is no guarantee that changing the seal will fix your problem. Other than flushing the valve out by putting the cup over it, and changing the seal, there’s not much more you can do. If one of those two things do not fix the problem, then you’ll probably just have to change out the whole valve, and I have another video on that.

Thanks so much!
I just changed the valve seal, and it still leaks. Any other suggestions? In fact, when I saw it wasn't working, I took the cap off again, and noticed the seal was no longer seated. After several tries to get it right, it still leaks. The new seal looks exactly like the old one, yet it won't seat properly.
As long as you put the seal in correctly, and it is still leaking then there is a problem not related to the seal. It’s probably time to change out the entire valve. This is not too complicated. Unfortunately, it is not nearly as easy as replacing the seal that you already did. Here’s a video to help you.

I installed a new fill valve today and there's a slight drip coming from under the cap. It stops when the toilet is finished filling but still don't think it should. I took the washer off and inspected it and found nothing damaged. Is it worth taking the fill valve back off and returning it for a new one again?
Ha
My new one loses 1/8 inch n keeps refilling tank in seconds..I did see drip like you mentioned.
Sorry for the delayed response. If it stops when the toilet is full, I personally would not worry about it.
@@morganinspectionservices3840 Meh, I just went ahead and took it back to get a different one. The replacement didn't have the issue, Thankfully.
Does the top black cap comes off first?..
Yes
Well I just learned the water shut off valve behind my toilet doesn't work. Had to balance the tank lid over that cap thing so I didn't flood my 2nd floor condo bathroom while I wretched close the main waterline.
Well, I’m glad you were able to do that, and I hope you got the problem solved.
I don't have the same setup at all!! It must be a much older unit!!
Yes. Some valves are different.
Replaced that seal but the valve still leaks.
So you don't need the float anymore
Hi. These new ones still have a float, but it is different than the old ones that looked like a ball on a metal rod.
@@morganinspectionservices3840That's the exact model I have since my house is 17 years old. The water in my bowl is too low. It's a Briggs model.
You dropped a spring 😅
