Tips on how to use the Laowa 24mm Macro Probe Lens for Nature and Wildlife in the field.
Some advice based on what I've learned after a year of using this lens, including camera settings, tips reducing shake and lighting.

This is really interesting mate. Came across this lens when I was investigation options for macro shooting. Have an awesome day!💥From Fun At Home (supporting content creators)☮
Never even heard of this type of lens before. Really interesting, will have to invest in one in the future. Really good informative video, looking forward to any other videos you make on this subject.👍
Thank you. Its certainly an interesting lens to use
Nice Video! 💚
Thank you
Great tips mate very tempted by one!
Thanks, I waited a couple of years before I final gave in!
Great intro to the lens. As you say, definitely a specialized bit of kit but enormous fun and it really does give you a view on the world that's totally unique. I've learned so much about insect behaviour since I started slow-motion videoing them with this lens.
Regarding underwater videos with a tripod - I've done a little bit using that setup (though it was beasts caught by the pond-dippers and on display in a shallow tray rather than in the pond itself). It did work quite well, though I think your beanbag approach is probably better for that situation as you can slide backward & forward easier as your subject moves, not just up/down/left/right which is more natural for a tripod mounted camera. The biggest problem I've found with using it on a tripod is the end moving - a little bit of wind can set up obvious vibrations as you mention - that's why I started using the rubber grommet on the end to allow the tip to rest on the ground or similar to aid stability. I've also use a 22mm pipe clip for a similar purpose. You have to get quite inventive with these weird lenses!
Overall I think it's a real hats-off to Laowa - they certainly do some unusual hardware and that has to make our lives more interesting (even if it also makes our wallets lighter 😃)
Thanks Steve. I bought some pipe clips after seeing your video but they were the locking type and I feared they would have got stuck on the lens so I wimped out trying them! I have an idea based on them though which I hope to cover in the next video once Ive made it and tried it out!
Thanks for the video, you gave good info.
I found this info to share with you.
Nitze - Laowa 24mm T14 Periprobe Lens Support. Specially designed for Laowa 24mm T14 2X Periprobe. Compatibility Laowa 24mm T14 2X Periprobe.
Thanks though that support wont fit this lens
@@ukwildlife how sorry
Really useful video thank you. Wishing I had known about this lens when I delved into macro filming (my specialisation has always been long telephoto lens filming) my documentary about meadows.
Its a fab, if niche use lens. I need to find more excuses to use it to be honest!
Great video. I am considering buying the lens.
It's a specialist bit of kit but amazing if you have good use for it. Was using it today on robberflies.
There's a follow up video on the way too :)
A really helpful video. I have one of these lenses that I am still learning how to use. I have found a monopod can be helpful in some instances.
Thanks, im glad you found it helpful.
I'd wonder about a monopod. Guess it helps with the stuff I was doing handheld? Have you found its steady with the close up stuff?
@@ukwildlife It is not the answer to everything but it does help keep the lens at the same height, you still have to make sure you keep the lens at a constant distance from the subject. I use my tripod with a tripod head which makes a big difference I think.
I have it and didn't publish anything yet but used it for insect filmmaking. I would say use it with a tripod, or film in 4K@120fps to smooth out the shakes on my a7SIII. I think it's hard to deal with outside a7SIII/FX3/FX6 as you got much headroom for ISO.
Great video! Hope to try on my zcam. I can shoot low noise at 51200 iso so that helps. But I have linkstar panels which are powered by Sony Ls.
Thanks, I looked at the zcam until the GH6 came out, which fit my needs better, but it seemed like a good match with probe lens.
@@ukwildlife I love the low light and pro res capability of the M4.
