On 28 August 2024, Canon announced that due to high demand, new orders for the R5 II would be delivered in 6 months. I didn't pre-order initially because I was still considering whether it was worthwhile to trade in my R5 for the mark 2. However, since I have a few overseas trips coming up and I really wanted to test out the new R5 II, I decided to call my regular camera shop. They kindly reserved a copy for me, and I was able to pick it up last week. I'm very happy with the R5 II and don't plan on buying another camera for a long time and I don't have to care about supply chain delays. My advice is not to procrastinate and overthink it. If you really want or need the new camera and it will make you happy, just go ahead and buy it. Don't spend your life waiting for the things you love.

Yes, it has been frustrating. I was very fortunate with finally getting the 200-800. I canceled two pre-orders with B&H. I finally decided on 2/14 to go on backorder with a local store. I got the call on 6/1. A true three and a half month wait wasn't bad at all. For the R5 II, I got up super early to watch your live stream. Your link went live, so I went for it. My order for the R5 II was in at 6:04 am. Two days later, I ordered an extra battery. A week after that, the BG-R20 grip. All three arrived on release date 8/20. Having said all of this, it's become a bit of a job to get new gear. LOL. If you don't pre-order, you don't get anything new these days on release day. Stores don't have any inventory on the shelf for many months. It really shouldn't be this difficult. Thanks for all the work you put into your channel, Simon.
You are totally right! The global policy on not giving customers long term information coupled with this shortages is a real hit in a gut from major manufacturers. I'am currently thinking on upgrading my 5Dmk4, and i'am targeting to R5mk2 + 28-70f2 + 70-200f2.8, but if there is any R1X (high resolution version of R1), or next versions of 28-70f2 or 70-200f2.8 on the horizon, it changes a lot. Currently we are mostly sure that new 70-200f2.8 with internal zoom are coming this year. But on the 28-70f2 there are only "in the work" rumor. And on R1X there are only speculations. And what about 85f1.2, for example. The EF 85 f1.2 II was released in 2006, and not found a replacement in EF lenses line. The RF version was released in 2019, as RF70-200f2.8. But will it be updated as 70-200 in 5-6 years, or as EF predecessor will be actual for decade and a half, while the overall trend is to increasing update frequency. I'am not that kind of "want everything new" dude. But i want understandable long term hardware strategy. And that situation is frustrates me as F. In all that world, i wanna say large THANK YOU to Simon, for his great work in gathering and analyzing information.
Walked into B&H in NYC last Monday and walked out with R5 mark ii (albeit the 24-105 kit). Purchased RF lenses I wanted and I got a new bag immediately.
I remember when the blackmagic pocket cinema camera was first announced back in 2017 and everyone went to preorder it. I never preordered and I just picked it up from Amazon the day it was released (was one of the first in the US to get it). Long story short. Don’t need to pre order to get something Day 1. You just need to know where to look. Local mom and pop stores will likely have them in stock. Just do your due diligence, pre ordering is not necessary.
I noticed that the R5II charges only if the USB mode is not in "streaming" (no red usb led when using streaming mode), which indicates that it wouldn't accept any form of USB charging when using it as a webcam... That's a shame, as a power delivery / data Y cable could have been used to use it as a 24/7 working webcam.
That's not cool. I guess with the large US market, it's not a big issue. I don't think there should be a problem with cancelling an order before it is shipped.
Really waiting on the shipment of the R1 and the RF 200 - 500, audio I use a Sen 416 MKH, iZotope RX 11 advance, Zoom F6, and Tentacle sync time code generator and sometimes I’ll engage Universal Audio with Apollo and Luna and sometimessssss I’ll use a U67 mic with a breath filter screen
Hi Simon, the parts supply may also relate to low-tech like magnesium. hmmm, your 100-500 looks near identical to my 200-800 😛 .. it would have been correct when I didn't pay attention to the audio, but without audio we wouldn't be enjoying your jokes. Seriously, I don't know anything about final cut, but part of my professional expertise is acoustics and I hardly notice any audio quality issues on your videos, you're well above the average audio quality on youtube because you care ! You're aiming to improve from 98% to 100% which is obviously the hardest area to improve any further ..
I believe the Nikon cameras are set. No need for the Z7III because the Z6III & Z8 are good enough. How about a new Film camera from Nikon. They are putting out more lenses with Third Party Support. I got the Sigma 18-50mm f/1.8 for the RF APSC is excellent. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am not sure if consumer and/or prosumer cameras are part of Sony's, Canon's and Panasonic core business strategies. These companies have their fingers in so many different pies. A lot of true pros will only upgrade and replace if there is a commercial justification for them to do so. As to the R100 it's good enough for most things. A true bargain
For Canon and Nikon it's a core business. For sons, not so much. Sony is a much bigger company with many business units, but they haven't had a big win in. long time so any draw on the system isn't helpful.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Just had a look at Canon. Their imaging unit only provides just over 21% of sales. Their printing business is worth 56% sales. I'd like to see a further breakdown of the imaging sales, i.e. cinema cameras and lenses, mirrorless by segment etc.
The fact that these companies have many distinct businesses is not an excuse or an acceptable explanation. A more plausible cause is a moderate level of sales, given the overall market size, wvich limits potential profits

Being an early adopter of new technology has its downsides. For example, I’ve heard that some people who got the Canon R5 II on the first day are having trouble finding enough new batteries for it. It’s hard to believe that the old batteries can’t power all the features of the new camera. It seems like Canon might be using this as a marketing strategy rather than a real problem.
I have never heard of that. Everytime I have ever preordered anything from B&H or Adorama I have never been charged a penny until the item has shipped to me. My local camera store is the same way. No deposit required, and certainly no fee if I cancel. Maybe you should check out other retailers?
@@alansach8437 I purchased photography equipment from B&H for over 20 years. I stopped because I rarely received my preorder items on the first shipment date. The waiting list is too big. I currently purchase from a company not in New York City and my orders are shipped out on time on the first release date. My only issue with them is the deposit. However I have never not purchased what I preordered.

I kinda agree, much of the new R glass is slow, the R8 is crippled with the 24 to 50 kit lens. That reminds me of my first Canon EF camera and its kit lens. I almost put it on the shelf, but I took a chance and bought a 50mm f1.8.

I am seeing more used cameras also at great prices. My eye is on the Sony A7SIII for $2600 at my local camera store.

I don't expect a Z7iii, I really can't see where it would fit, the Z7iii is the Z8, I think. I think refresh of Z50 will be Nikon's next camera launch
Unfortunately here in Aus at least retailers will often request a non refundable deposit so as people do not pre order then cancel.
