I’m an older 66 year old. Old school mechanic. Logging and hot rodding type. Helping my grandson fix his S-10 first car. These electronics and wiring has created a nightmare. I can only throw parts at it. Process of elimination. I have a scan tool. It’s just like this guys says. It could be this it could be that. Many electronics can’t be tested. Or they won’t do wrong when it’s cooked off from running. I used to like to mechanic. Now days you are a parts changer. No way to know what’s wrong with this modern plastic electronic junk. I swear. Especially every time I buy another part that doesn’t fix the problem. Damn it!!
I’d say 90% of the time it’s the actual coil pack. Then the wiring. The harness might split or something. Either way these things run like crap when the coil goes out. Then you change it BAM immediately it runs butter smooth again. These motors run smooth like butter if they’re running right.
I've been getting misfires under when under load (accelerating, gearing up, etc). I am am getting these codes on Coils A and C even after replacing the coils and plugs, and the car won't start. The car is 340K km, could this be related to VVT and timing? Could it be a failed phaser and cam position related?
thank you so much for this information, i just changed my spark plugs and ignition coils, and got this code. i wonder if i didnt tighten the spark plugs enough, ( they all felt super tight when taking them off, so i ordered myself a torque wrench just so i can check the toque later. ) what is weird is the airbag light keeps coming on also, and the code for thermostat just came on, saying the car was running at a cold temperature. well i didn’t warm up my car in the morning for long and it was super cold (probably 40 degrees Fahrenheit or so) and i was running the heater on blast…. anyways i will proceed to swap two of the coils, maybe take the cylinder one spark plugs out, or at least check for looseness, and then wipe code and see if it fixes the issue, should i go ahead and replace the thermostat first or do you think it should be fine? car was running at normal temperature later when i let it warm up properly.
i should also mention that before the thermostat code came on the thermostat was going all the way to the left like dangerously cold so i turned the heater off but by the time i got off the freeway and parked that’s when i saw the engine light come on
It needs to be diagnosed, but it sounds like a wiring issue. I would locate the engine coolant temperature sensor (or sensors) and be sure it all looks plugged in good.
Checked wiring and parts all test good. Still have the code wondering if the vvt could be the cause. I replaced the drivers side but not the passenger side vvt valve. I was having similar issues on drivers side with the bad vvt. So I'm wondering
I’m getting a misfire on cylinder 1 as well as code for primary/secondary circuit for A and D, cylinder 1 coil was fried so I replaced all coils and spark plugs but still fried cylinder 1 coil, any idea what’s happening?
Umm, yeah, it turns out I installed the wrong flywheel in my tj. I ordered the correct one and re-installed it. All my problems went away. CPS couldn't read the tj flywheel correctly.
Hill climbing noticed a misfire with a heavy load in a 2001 Volvo xcv70. This was the only code. A Volvo this old has brittle plastic connectors everywhere especially the ones that hold the wire terminal to each coil pack sitting on top of the engine. Pathetic design feature IMHO. Such a hot location for plastic items that fragile. But the location of the coil pack also seem like a premature self destructive lifestyle choice as well. Perhaps the coil pack assembly has been over built to handle the torture but it is clear the tiny little snap plastic clips are not up to the task. Zip ties have been the only remedy but also a poor one. The connector itself seems fine but the snap clips broke off and get loose very easily now.
I made a full detailed video on how to test each component in the injector circuit. Here is the link. ua-cam.com/video/JL4_HlYCKrw/v-deo.html
Finally a video that fully explains reasons why im getting the code and ways to troubleshoot. Thanks 🙏
This is a video that really is helpful. Straight to the point, informative.
Thank you for listing all the possible reasons, too. Thank you for the video!

I only have one coil on my truck, no coil packs. I have code p0351 ignition coil open primary. So should I still start at the plug wire ?

On a single coil box with jusg wiring coming out to seperage spark plugs can a dripped oil onto spark plug area can cause such error?
What about when I get both this, and a P0301?
I would check the coil on cylinder #1 and the wiring going to the coil
It's probably the coil and plug.

same code in chevrolet aveo 1.2 ls, how to fix that
This was very helpful and very instructional. Thanks 👍

There must be a wiring issue
Wiring? What about the injectors?
I got p0351 , p0352, and p0353 after replacing my clutch on a 03 jeep wrangler. I might have pinched the wiring. Yikes
