Why so crabby? (Cancer magister)

Another cute encounter with a local crustacean: the Dungeness crab (Cancer magister)! These crabs feed on small fish and crustaceans, but they're scavengers too. These crabs tend to be found more often from Alaska to northern CA...so it was quite interesting to find it in the Mexican waters of Ensenada! Sadly this species is also a bioindicator of ocean acidification. As climate change continues, the waters become more acidic, and in some places, the shells of the young crabs is starting to dissolve!

¡Otro lindo encuentro con un crustáceo: Cancer magister. Este cangrejo se alimenta de peces pequeños y de otros crustáceos, además de ser carroñeros. Se les puede encontrar desde Alaska hasta el norte de California...¡por lo que es bastante interesante topárnoslo en las aguas mexicanas de Ensenada! Tristemente, esta especie también es un biondicador de la acidificación del océano. Conforme aumenta el cambio climático, las aguas se vuelven más ácidas, y en algunos sitios el caparazón de los cangrejos jóvenes empieza a disolverse.
