Fans in Germany might not have been screaming over Sally but she had a tremendous effect on me at home in Coventry aged 15. That rah rah skirt. Oh mammy, I nearly went blind.
Need some new specs there, Sally. Interesting she mentioned she was to be in Bucks Fizz; so was Stephen Fisher at one point. Jay Aston and Bobby Gubby ended up there and had quite a career under Andy Hill and Nicola Martin. Noted about Cheryl and Sally winning Song for Europe twice. Don't think people over here will ever get Eurovision until the US sends a band; we can claim Kansas-born Katrina Leskanich, whose Waves won in 1997. But it's much different now.
Just recently found your channel and really enjoying the content, thank you so much. Sally-Ann was a great guest but, as others have pointed out, Cheryl Baker and Ronnie Carroll are up there with two time wins. Sally-Ann does hold the best record of the three on a medals table with a silver and a bronze. I have a soft spot for Ronnie Carroll. Apparently, as a two year old in 1962, he patted me and spoke to my Mother at a village fete...
Thanks for listening. And yes, sorry about that oversight. Glad we have astute listeners to keep us honest :-). And that's incredible re: Ronnie Carroll! -Charlie
@@euroversepodcast Thanks Charlie - may I say, for someone from outside Europe who only discovered ESC as recently as you (was it 2018 - the SuRie vid) you have a really good grasp on the contest. I'm an oldie from the UK -my earliest memories go back to 1969 and I remember watching Lulu's selection process on British TV... It has been a constant in my life ever since, and growing up it has never gone away. Yes, I'm gay and perhaps that really resonated at an early age, but when people ask me why I love ESC i answer "I love music, I love performance, I love languages, I love geography, I love exploring different cultures, I love history, I love politics, I'm a stats nerd" ALL of these are there in this contest. plus the LGBTQ quota that seems to increase year by year. For many Europeans ESC tracks the progress of the continent socio-politically, far more than news channels will ever tell you. It's a constant barometer of moods and it reassures me every year. It has been a thrill watching this contest develop over the past 50 years
@@thingybob4375 Thank you so much! And I completely agree -- the way the contest interacts with queer identity, geopolitics, and music all at the same time is what made me fall in love with Eurovision in the first place :-) - Charlie
Thanks for the correction-- I misunderstood the fact which, I believe, is that Sally is the only one of the group to have won the UK final every time she competed (Ronnie Carroll having lost in 1960, Cheryl Baker having come up short in 1976 with Co-Co). Apologies and thanks again for the catch.
I'll think you'll find Ronnie Carroll won the UK final twice in 1962 and 1963. Cheryl Baker was a double winner also - in 1978 and 1981. Get your facts right.

Eurovision is so political. I think sam got good marks partly due to uk being the country that supported ukraine and of course they gave us 12
