- Taxing a car without a V5 logbook is not so easy. More information here: www.carveto.co... DVLA makes this the case to try and stop motorist from buying a car that doesn't have all of the paperwork; in particular the V5C logbook.
The main reasons for avoiding a used car that doesn't have all of its documentation include:
It may be a write off,
It may be cloned or stolen.
General notes on taxing a car with no logbook. You need at least one of the following:
V11 car tax reminder
V5C logbook registered in your name
V62 Application form for a new logbook (provided the car is currently registered in your name)
V5C/2 (or V5C/6 on the new style V5) Green new keepers supplement
If you don't have any of these DVLA documents, you are generally unable to tax a vehicle.
Steps to taxing a car without the correct documentation
Firstly, apply for a new V5C via the V62 application form - helpful link: www.carveto.co...
There's a fee of £25, and the logbook usually arrives within four weeks of application.
While you wait for the new logbook, your new car must be declared as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification).

SORN takes your car off the road meaning you don't need to have it insured, taxed or MOT'd, but you can't use the car legally on the road unless driving to a pre-booked MOT test. More on MOT testing here: www.carveto.co...
I don't have any of the documents, I don't want to SORN, and I need to use the car immediately... There is one possibility.
You need to have:
Insurance cover note
MOT certificate (if the car is over three years old)
V62 Logbook application form and a cheque or debit card for £25
Identification (preferably your driver's license)

This is best done in writing. Don't support online services and If they start insisting you pay online you... refuse & keep driving!
Basically you are hoping that the post office clerk makes a mistake. In the advice on the back of the v62 section it is made clear that tax can only be issued if the v5 is already in your name but not in the case of a transfer.
The 7 days or less reference does not apply in October 2021 that's for damn sure, I have friends as of today waiting 9 weeks and heard of some waiting 13 weeks. DVLA is simply not fit for purpose as the backlog of approx 54000 applications for renewal HGV and sundry licences proves. Thank you anyway but our local post office clerks would be better employed by Priti Patel down on the Kent coast if you get my drift.

My problem is that, purchased car, notified dvla, sorn vehicle while repairs undertaken. Then tried to tax it but system will not recognise green slip reference number because the vehicle is now registered in my name, and as the staff in swansea appear to be on a glorified jolly and not posting these logbooks, I can not put the vehicle on the road.
What barmpot thought this was a good idea needs certifying as I can see no good reason for it.

In the meantime, the car is already taxed (until Nov 2020) by the previous owner (car dealership). I can see that the vehicle is still taxed when I check online. I'm the same position. I was thinking of keeping the car off the road until I get the v5c and then I can tax it and drive.
My car also has road tax of the previous owner but I'm not sure if the insurance will be valid if the road tax is not in your name.

@@CarVeto completed the v62 form and as the car was purchased from an auction, I didn't have the v5c. I also wasn't given any details of the owners surname and post code by the auction. These 2 details are needed to submit a v62 and get road tax.
The clerk entered the v62 details in the computer system for road tax and it rejected. I was then asked for the current owners postcode and surname. I couldn't provide so they said I have to wait for the v5c to be sent out to me to buy road tax. Frustrating!
Sent the v62 in the post to DVLA, I hope they send me the out the v5c soon as I want the car on the road soon.

Buyer needs the v62 to reapply and sorn the car as they can't usually get road tax. Unless you have the green slip.

You need to declare SORN.
Hoping you can get back soon. Looking at buying a vehicle soon. The owner says he doesn’t have the log book or a v5 I think but can write a receipt and then I can fill a v62 in and tax it and insure it. Is this something to be worried about will it bite me in my ass long term. Also i checked and it’s not been stolen etc

You'd get a refund on any road tax you have not used. It needs to be in your name for it to be legit.
Hi I just bought a car from auction that has no V5C on. I tried to apply for a V62 but I read on the same document that I should allow 4 weeks from the date I bought the vehicle before you use this form. Is this the norm?
Not really. Just apply right away. DVLA trying to minimise their workload.
Hi, wondering if you can help me, I bought a car nearly a month ago now and had to tax at the seller's local post office so that I could drive it home legally, I also advised them that I would be the new keeper as there was no current V5. I'm a bit worried now as I haven't had the new v5 come through and checking the vehicle on DVLA, it says last logbook issued 2006. My concern would be that if I were to apply for a new V5, would the tax I've paid (1 year too!) be automatically refunded to whoever is the current keeper? Many thanks, Ryan

Yes. Apply via v62. If you can't tax the car it must be sorned.

If you don't have insurance, tax or mot, you need SORN.
If the vehicle has been taxed by the previous keeper prior to their death.
Is the tax valid after their death?
No it's not. You must claim a refund from DVLA and buy new road tax.

Seven weeks is a long time but DVLA are struggling to send our V5C logbooks due to COVID-19. Suggest waiting up to ten weeks before a new application. Also check and see if they have taken the £25 fee for a new V5 as it indicates processing.

Absolutely wrong
There are no guarantees with this method but it does work most times.
