I played back from Revised to Weatherlight and had been considering getting back into playing. The way the game looks now, looks very similar to my experience with comics in the early to mid 90s and I am hesitant to play Magic because of that. Comics were producing so many titles and going crazy with "special editions" like foil covers, polybagged issues and lots of series beginnings. That market crumbled under it's own weight. Looking at MtG I see it's gone from 1 full set and 2 smaller sets in a year to 4 full sets in a year. You also have foil cards and serialized cards. This just reminds me of how the comic market crashed. I might try some Standard format and just see how things go.
i started collecting comics in the 80s and yeah the 90s was a bust but comic books made a strong come back for a bit ....i cant speak on the pandemic cause things went crazy even a little after for books i made so much money. I started playing MTG in 1994 and stopped in 96 got back in in 2018 ....I personally just buy what i want and play what i want besides buying every set then giving most of the cards away to subscribers. I guess what I'm saying is start out with Arena see how it feels and then go into buying a few pre cons just to see if you really want to jump back in. Good luck .
It's interesting, you said it yourself. Most brick-and-mortar stores don't do super well with modern and have the majority of people playing Commander or other formats. Obviously, WotC/Hasbro is well aware of this so why would they spend an absurd amount of value on research and development of the set and limit it to only modern where only a fraction of their player base is interested in that format? Instead, I think it's smart for them to put a lot of commander support as could introduce commander players to modern and have them explore other formats outside of commander. I think the price will settle down and this ridiculous Amazon presale will end up dropping significantly.
Im nervous about it. Its above my own, and many others, ceiling on what they will spend on premium card board rectangles that can be repeinted on a whim. I dont like going over $200 usd a box and just wont go over $300.... Card strength likely will be pretty good but at the same time wotc likes to shoot itself in the foot so it could be a lukewarm flop. If it has new slivers that are good like in MH2 I will be forced to get them though.
Yeah, I found that super weird. Crazy that there are commander precons for a Modern focused set, and collector editions to boot. I also find it funny that you are driving at night in Korea. When your store is in Texas. Posting while on vacation?
You’re not wrong. I expect the set as a whole ends up as a banger and shakes the format a lot, but commander decks are kind of out of place, and this definitely wasn’t the place to introduce collector commander decks. Maro is right that modern event decks would have to be a ton for the regular version, but you’re right that they are huge as a jumping in point, but it’s a no win spot for Wizards where either they release expensive decks, they release decks that aren’t close to competitive, or they don’t do decks.
I agree with you on the serialized cards. I disagree on the creating challenger decks for Modern, it's about as a bad take as creating legacy and vintage pre-cons. MH1 is not selling below distribution costs either. Yes, you're smoking something.
