Overall, I don't really get it. Why in god's name would anyone listen to Rudy, Dan, or anyone else wholesale? This entire channel is a person's opinion. Granted the opinion is based on experience, but it is still opinion. Dan's is opinion. The Professor's is opinion. I listen and make my own big boy choice about what to do. I heard Rudy make a comment a long time ago about 7th edition foils being rare. So, I researched it a bit and decided he was right. I bought the shit out of high end 7th foils (city of brass, BOP, etc) while they were cheap. Having a like mind to Rudy there, I made up some serious value. I also came to the same conclusion on Monarch that he did and bought in. I lost my ass. He did not make me do that. I did my own research and decided I agreed. I took my loss and went on my way. I made a killing on his early FaB stuff. I lost on Commander Masters. Shit happens, and I only roll the dice on money I can afford to lose. I don't care one bit what Rudy does to TCG prices (up or down). I had just as much opportunity as anyone else to buy in cheap, build an empire, etc. I didn't. Tough shit for me. The fact people are not buying the hell out of RL cards right now while they are crashed shows people who were always complaining about the cost never cared about the cards themselves. If they did, they would be buying now at the lows. They cared they missed the boat and that someone else got rich off of it. I, on the other hand, am buying the hell out of higher end RL cards that are on mass discount right now. If I lose on them, well, that was again, my choice. I will give Rudy one massive bit of credit. He puts his money where his mouth is. All I ask for from anyone selling me something is that they be honest about their place in it. Rudy is clear he is intending to make money. He gives his view. Gives his price. Then I, as an adult, make a choice.
In general you're right. Listening to a range of opinions is a great way to gain perspective but in the end you have to make your own moves in this world.
i dont even play magic, i watch because rudy's funny and smart, i dig the insight from the investing broker stuff and its illuminating from a viewpoint of someone who is super successful, i love it
I also don't play Magic. But I punched alpha in the keyword and there comes Rudy. And yes, I'm not a bot or an A. I. I'm a real person and he's got good successful story. And he's kind of a cheerful and makes me laugh!
The truth of the matter is that as a relative newcomer to MTG (about 8 years) the 'community' is probably one of the most toxic environments I have ever been in. I love the thoughtfulness it takes to play the game and even the high stakes collectibility of it, but truthfully I greatly dislike most other enthusiast of the game because the interactions are typically as if you F'ed their wife and their working out decades of issues well in reality talking about colored compressed recycled paper. Rudy is an interesting case study because to anyone else he is a guy who owns a business, but to some MTG fans he is the great Satan. As a result of that they take every opportunity to try to dehumanize him in a near habitual way.. which says way more about those people then they care to know (I'm looking at your BoromirSonofDenethor I know you will have posted a comment it's f'ckin' weird dude stop). In so many ways Rudy is one of the best MTG channels (better than Tolarian) because he never lies to you about his intentions. He didn't shit on Magic 30 just so WOTC would bribe him letting him do some manner of card reveal and then make a video about why he isn't a sellout. All Rudy actually does is try to sell people sh!t for a fair market value just like everyone else the only difference is doesn't pretend to be a public figurehead or your super best friend.
Most MTG actual players are true dirtballs, like literally don't shower - somewhat generalizing but true in about 1 out of 4 dorks that walk through the game store doors.
He 100% lies lol every one of his box openings is him pumping the hype train. Its like any youtube channel, personal stuff at first, but once you realize you got big influence you reap money from it. Nothing wrong hes fun to watch
Rudy doesn't care about playing the game you dope! So of course he wouldn't do a reveal. MTG is just a means of making money for him and nothing more. His channel is great but I wouldn't say its the best MTG Channel because its not really about MTG nessicarily but just a man obssessed with cardboard and the things that surround it. So it's a bit unfair to shit on Tolarian who is someone who loves the product and grew up with it versus someone who loves it as much as someone who has stock in a company.
Rudy you said it very clear. 👍👍 A lot of people in this world, I too sometimes, blame others for their own mistakes, misfortunes, mishaps, etc. It’s hard to take ownership on thyself and to admit to any wrongdoing. It’s no different when a spouse comes home from a bad day at work, gets on a tiny heated disagreement, back away because all lashes will be focus on the other person. Rudy, you are that other person. You didn’t do anything wrong, you just found a better system which others either didn’t want to do or failed to realize a need to change. I had a similar experience with one of my IT clients. No matter what I setup, supported, implemented, and designed to the best possible way, he was never happy. When I cut ties with him, he wanted me to name my price. I just walked away. It wasn’t worth the hassle. Be yourself Rudy, if others don’t like you, you don’t have to pi$$ in their pools. Thanks for great video and others you have done. ❤
I've been following YOU since almost the start (early Card Life/Store videos), I DO NOT play Mtg or any other card games but I am a collector of other things.....So, bottom-line, I dont come here for the latest Mtg or F&B cards, I do come for your understanding, discussion and sharing of experience/information on market conditions....Why?....Because I've noted over the years that collectables are usually the first thing to draw back in a tough economy and vice versa.....So, you be you, I'll still watch.....AND please share those weird story videos!
Small lgs owner over here. Rudy keep doing your thing man. I love that you approached this market with a different business strategy. I’m always trying to evolve how my store operates. Small lgs fail because they don’t change with the rest of commerces. I’m currently trying to shake up the sport card hobby world unfortunately distributors gate keep a lot harder on the sport cards 😂.
While you may not read every comment Rudy, if you read this one just know that you have had a beneficial impact on my life and those in my circle around me. Mainly, these conversations of perspective and reflecting on not only your choices but others is what i think is missing in this world. There are not many people or family members for that matter that will teach financial / real life lessons like this. Specifically, your journey from being a young Timmy to going through being a mechanic, broker, and then finding this niche business and becoming a cardboard emperor. Following your passions lead you down many roads with many dead ends to then reflect, understand, and realize how to blend your passions with your skillset into whatever this global cardboard empire this thing has become is an amazing feat in and of itself. But to also do so without selling yourself to the big interest / corporate greed monster is the truly remarkable part. Now, I'm not naive enough to think that everything you've done is super squeaky clean (not accusing or anything) or that you don't purposely do what's in your best interest but from what I've been able to gather you've struck a great medium and an honorable one at that. All this is to say that keep on doing what your doing and having fun with it, people do appreciate your shenanigans, and more content on keeping it real in this wacky world is something we could use more of. Take care out there Rudy, and if we cross paths IRL the Taco Bell party pack is on me brotha.
@tcsmagicbox mtglion is an attention seeker. He has been doing this for 8+ years and never got the views. He used to use his female employees to do his videos back then, but it never blown up. We aren't simps.
I feel like Umu basically just reads the titles of the videos and doesn’t listen to anything Rudy actually says before rambling worse than Billy Madison trying to explain the Industrial Revolution.
When you mentioned that certain customers you just HAVE to walk away from that really hit home with me. I run a small IT business and that was one of the hardest things for me to learn. Certain customers will complain no matter what you do and even if you give them discounts to the point where you are barely above water, they will still complain. Let them go and focus on the ones that don't complain and pay their bills.
The head of the department when I got my Hospitality degree said the real first rule isn't that the customer is always right, but that you can't make everyone happy.
It's funny because Rudy talks are the only thing about current year Magic that I actually like. I wouldn't touch boxes of modern magic with a ten foot clown world pole.
I liked how he ended this one. He usually tells us it’s coming just before. This time he didn’t say anything. Just grabbed with both hands and pulled us right on to it. Felt good.
I don't have an issue with Rudy, but I think he does end up catching some of the well-deserved vitriol aimed at Hasbro and WOTC for milking Magic and its players as much as it does.
loved this video, feels just like a chat with a friend. do more story videos pls. doesnt even have to be magic related, id love to hear more about RC cruise money moves and the like.
I knew a guy who was anti-capitalist, anti making money but if you tried to trade with him he had no problem trying extract as much value down to every 10 cents in a trade.
These kinds of people pretend to be the white knights for the downtrodden, but they couldn't care less about them, they just hate the rich. It's just pure petty jealousy and envy for what they don't/can't have. It's a very evil mindset.
Some folks want Alpha Investments to be a "get rich quick" content since all they see is a massive inventory of pricey cardboard. I don't blame them. Folks just wanna win the game of capitalism like Rudy.
I remember when I first started watching, I saw a Reddit post about how you scammed a guy with a signed black lotus was a forgery. It made me hesitant of you I must admit, but I still gave you a chance because you seemed like a solid enough dude. There was some video years later that you even addressed that specific controversy, and it was clear you weren't some scumbag. Always two sides to a story, and people are allowed to express their opinions, but it does seem there is a constant flux of character assassination towards you even though you are one of the most straight forward down to earth "celebrities" I've ever listened to. Thanks for the years of content mate and the years to come! Dude I was about to post this and hadn't listened to the full video and holy moly, you actually brought up the exact black lotus controversy I was talking about!!! That's flipping crazy!
All he did was offer product for market rates or less. He hasn't stolen any money out of any one's pocket and forced them to take any MTG or other CCG product. It's all voluntary. I mean, you have to sign up for his Patreon of your own accord to be able to purchase. You end up in Hose Town because you choose to buy not because Rudy makes it available for sale.
Unfortunately, people often have negative habits, are jealous or simply don't begrudge you success. You go your own way and I think you're doing great! Keep it up!! And thank you for your great videos, which are often full of humor! 🌻

I am neutral and find Rudy‘s videos often very educational and entertaining. Rudy, Open Boosters and some other channels certainly motivated me to buy more into Magic vintage products. I do not regret it…
5:30 I work in cannabis, we're low in brick and mortar stores as well. Large corporations have been constructed over the years and there are several corporations that have retail, cultivation, and kitchens (medicated edibles). Columbia Care (also in Florida) and other companies buy out businesses and continue the name as a guise to try to monopolize another industry that is already the wild west as is.
No you missed the part where Rudy said that young socialists who hate small business and local game stores are to blame for the demise of small business. He said it in the first 5 minutes of the video idk how you missed this priceless nugget of wisdom.
I love you rudy, i remember that one summer when you first started your channel and i randomly stumbled upon your channel when you had like 3k subs, from doing food distribution and mtg to now being a gamechanger in the space, crazy to see your growth over the years
Other lgs hated Big Daddy's comics in Schaumburg Illinois and that was because I discounted everything and just made a few bucks just to draw in people. I sold the mostMagic the Gathering and got the best discounts but that was in the 90s
Rudy as someone who lives in Florida I only work six months of the year during the "on" season in this crappy tourist state. Did you ever have to deal with that?
As a teacher, you can never really know what’s going on inside of a students head. I imagine people on the Internet are similar. Giving them space is always good idea because my life while not perfect is probably better than theirs and they’re dealing with all the shit.
I think its the complete opposite. Young people LOVE small businesses! Its the 100 people that own everything in the world, and hoard billions, that are the problem!
Money can only be earned by trading one thing for another. Thus if you have $1000, you've given $1000 of something else to someone else already and just haven't converted your side of the trade into goods or services yet. It is impossible and delusional to claim you are "hoarding" the $1000 you got in exchange for what you've already given to someone else. In fact, society has more goods for everyone else the more money just sits on the sidelines as cash not doing anything. Please learn something about economics before you hurt someone with your astounding arrogance of ignorance.
@@michaelrudolph7003people should work to have enough money to cover their basics, be able to chill every weekend, and then travel every few yrs. The top 1% have so much excess wealth, that it destroys the lives of us common folk. We should make an extra $2-3 so a dude can get his kid a new gaming console, but instead, Mr 750 millionaire needs another million
You're just wrong. Young people eat up these billion dollar company marketing campaigns whether it's apple, disney, facebook, uber etc. Any local small company that doesn't have an app and a major PR department is "untrustworthy" or "weird". Is it any wonder, if they've grown up in a world where every mall has the same stores and every restaurant is a chain?
Most small businesses just stay online because the cost of renting a brick and mortar location is just not possible until you have a certain level of logistics scale. Rent is higher, foot traffic is lower, and every LGS and frankly most businesses that can sell the same product online and in-store will tell you they sell more online so that minority % gain in the product sales has to be so worth it that even after paying a ridiculous rent cost, it's still worth it over holding the inventory and just selling online with better overall business margins.
You didn't make cards more expensive! You noticed that some cards were too cheap and boguht them up. That was just *smart*. Fcuk the haters Rudy! You're a top bloke :)
Rudy, I've watched your channel for a while. I'm not pro or anti Rudy. You figured out how to become the costco of card games (kudos to you), and anyone with success will draw out haters, so when I watch other videos that are critical of you (and others), I take them with as much of a grain of salt as I do your videos. But at the 10:20ish mark, when you compare restaurant meal prices to box prices. That's bananas. Restaurants are a consume on premise business model, not a investable, non-consumable product, which is what you've marketing. I get the analogy you're trying to make, but its simply not there. I shouldn't be making your argument for you, but the correct analogy would be to compare the card market to the stock market. When people bought Microsoft stock in Oct 22 at $350 a share and it dropped to $230 a share a month later, nobody went to the NYSE and asked for a refund for the difference in share price. Everyone that saw the drop picked from 2 choices, 1: decide the drop in value was enough to make a (or a bigger) investment in the the product because you believed in true long term potential, or, 2: sell the stock bc the sky was falling and you didn't think it would recover over the long term. Need another example? There are ETF's that do exactly what Jim Cramer suggests, and ones that do the exact opposite of what he suggests, lol. Imho, there is simply too much sealed product (from the past 4-7 years) sitting in every players' closet, for there to be any real long term gain that may be remotely close to an payoff similar to having bought product between ice age and 2005ish (certainly a few good sets after that to be fair) I wish you luck and success in life, and I wish all the patreons and yt watchers the best when it comes to making independent informed decisions on how to spend their money.
You know that key word alpha. I was looking for the alpha male and then the algorithm punch you in to my recommended list and here I am watching you. But people should go look up the comic king.
This vid is like listening to a alternate version of Taylor Swift's 'Shake it off' :) Very inspirational. Big kiss and lots of love from the Netherlands to Rudy!
I think the word you were looking for in the beginning was Niche. Niche businesses cannot sustain anymore due to seasonality, or cyclicality of their product or service coupled with brick and mortar costs. Small businesses still exist and remain a backbone of this country, but niche retail shops, especially gaming/cards simply couldn’t survive with the onslaught of digital adaptations and cyclicality of their products popularities.
Rudy you have to acknowledge that you're responsible for people taking huge losses. You can't say "I'm just some Timmy in the basement" and then say "You really think prices will be this low in the future?" No one is right about everything so just acknowledge some of the bad advice given
Whenever he says "in the future" he usually says 5 to 10 years. What "huge losses" happened from 5 to 10 years ago that you think he's responsible for?
Did Rudy force people to buy some product he was selling? On a long enough time scale almost all this stuff goes up. That's an opinion. What you buy or don't buy is on you and no one else regardless of what they say to you. You are an independent being capable of agency. The responsibility for what you do and don't do belongs solely to you.
McDonalds made me fat Either you're an adult with the agency to apply critical analysis to what you hear, or you're a child who needs supervision from a parent to assure you make good decisions. Which is it?
The same people who are not fans of capitalism and business are the same people who have no problem flipping a card on someone who has no idea on its value.
People don’t hate economic or political systems, people hate whatever label can best encapsulate the excuses for why they can’t be successful themselves.
@persuasivebarrier2419I have a comfortable engineering job and can generally afford the things I enjoy. I may not be rich, but I worked hard and got myself to a position of financial stability.
Sounds more like jealousy. Every CCG has cards that are more affordable nowadays. The collectors also have skin in the game. I believe right now is the best time for everyone interested
People are mad, because they didnt think of it first. Also its funny that some mom&pop shops blame you, but business is all about evolving. You evolve with the times and to fit your customer's needs and wants. Also everyone was hit hard during the 2008-2015 market downturn and 2020-current post "cough" downturn and the current market cold. Disposable income is down but its the 'businesses fault' that we cant buy stuff. Envy and Fear is what lead us into the current economic downturn.
A few things: 1. I hate you Rudy. 2. I’m kidding. I just wanted all of the haters to be happy it was said, and then keep reading to learn this is a positive comment. 3. Truth is. I’m very into collecting and investing in Pokémon primarily. However, also sports (hockey etc - I’m Canadian eh). Rarely at times will I buy other TCGs. Example, I own 1 MTG x LOTR collectors box as I’m a big LOTR fan. Or I bought the iconic OG Blue Eyes card etc. Anyways I say this because, This channel was introduced to me as it would be in my YT algorithm and I started watching at times. Long story short, although I’m NOT a MTG fan, you managed somehow to pull me into to your content that is primarily about MTG as the main TCG focus. Hats off for the great content, keep it up. 4. Holy man, MTG people can be so negative compared to the Pokémon side of things…. Probably because all the Pokémon fans are kids and the adults, like me never grew up 😂😂 5. I’m starting to appreciate MTG more as well as learn about other TCGs like One Piece. 6. Please keep the content rolling - investing talks, how the TCG market is looking like etc. etc. etc. personally, I like the investing talks the best. Love you Mr. taco Rudy man
Rudy, you're absolutely wrong about the way younger people feel about capitalism. Of the group that are dissatisfied with capitalism, they're dissatisfied with the fact that large consolidated corporations run the world and we're just along for the ride. They have no problem with smaller mom and pop businesses and largely try to spend their money as locally as possible. Furthermore they recognize in a world with these extremely large mega-corporations there's a lack of opportunity and vertical movement, you're essentially going to be a salaryman/woman for the rest of your life and never actually be able to create any form of generational wealth to pass down. It is a system that they recognize does not work for them.
The problem is rather Wizards creating an environment which collectors and salesmen can exploit. If they'd drop the restricted list, removed the mythic rarity and printed cards left and right until demand is saturated, everybody could play for a reasonable price. But this wouldn't be a profitable step for Wizards as a company, either - so we're stuck in this overpriced draught.
Man I NEVER watched this channel for MTG. I always watched it for the side lessons and stories. Rudy, who has 373 subs is closing LGS? lol woah. Maybe I have more power than I think too.
This honesty has made me a follower. If you're telling the truth of your life and ethics I can relate and will be watching more of your videos. This video was the first I've watched of yours where I decided comment on.
the hate i heard for Rudy has always been " he just owns a warehouse not a real store, doesnt hold events or anything. Just profits off people and not giving anything back to the community and undercuts us" from the big LGS owner by me but they are in a nice area and everything in that area is more expensive so Rudy does undercut their prices everytime
The "giving back to the community" stuff is just pure bullshit. It's goodwill that they hope produces more sales and profits for them, full stop, nothing more, nothing less. It's all still a business. The only giving back to the community a store can do is sell product at a price people accept and that keeps you in business and provide a place people like going to. Saying that kind of bull is way more scammy than what Rudy does.
It's not just Florida... Going to a new LGS I always ask what they think of Rudy... Always get colorful responses. Around the time of I believe it was the CMM collector boxes.. I think Rudy bought like 10k of them... I mentioned that to one of the owners and he said "Of course he did"... I get responses like he's hurting the market or he got out of the finance world because it had rules the trading card market doesn't? Personally I think it's just another matter of people like to have opinions and everyone is a critic.
and i’ve taken business and economics classes rudy is just speaking on how markets are in a capital society supply and demand. we have never had a true supply and demand market due to minimum wage, eoe, taxes, government greed etc but he talks like a scientist would about physics. it just is what it is and people don’t like that
Listen, someone said to me.. Well, not even to me, and I wasn't even part of the conversation. But anyway, someone said that: "I drink drinks" doesn't mean "I drink specifically orange juice". And I thought that I've never thought this but nice thought though. The point is.. well I forgot the point but that's not the point. Have a good day!
The boom is great. Everyone loves you. When the bubble bursts people need someone to blame. Most people will never take accountability for their own choices.
Asked the same question (what are your thoughts on Rudy?) at my LGS this last weekend (rather large LGS with prices that match or are even slightly better than Rudy's from time to time). The response was immediate - "I have never known a larger snake oil salesman." When I asked why the response was, "You know he owns like 30-40% of Sorcery, right?" Not sure if true, but that was the response.
30-40% of booster boxes or the company? If he had any ownership in the company, he would of made that public. Not because it's the ethical thing to do, but because Rudy would love for people to know that. Your LGS owner sounds bitter.
@@WestSideAus Completely agree. Sounded like an outlandish claim that would have been revealed from the start if true. Not sure where this info comes from. I didn't continue the conversation after that - didn't really want to engage further.
I find it funny that he would use Sorcery as the basis for his lie. Goes to show that some Magic players/sellers, that are too small minded to look outside the box, see the new kid on the block as a legitimate threat to their aged-powercreep'd-corporate crap ran game. And (*whisper Sorcery is the better game ran by people who love TCGs).
@@WestSideAuslol ya because sorcery, fab, and metazoo give him his own promos for fun. How stupid do you have to be to think Rudy has no financial connection to these companies? Lol

Most MTG actual players are true dirtballs, like literally don't shower - somewhat generalizing but true in about 1 out of 4 dorks that walk through the game store doors.
rudy looks like the kind of guy who would try to pickpocket my wallet after selling me a magic booster, the tolarian guy is at least inoffensive
@@ssorvete89lol,it’s soo funny that Rudy address Timmy’s like you in his video. You know, idiots that judge him and others just on looks alone….
Same here. Never played and probably never will.
That’s how business is. Evolve or die.

I feel like he doesn't catch enough vitriol for being a pump-and-dump chump.

Negativity keeps me warm and aware.
I just love listening to Rudy,it's always like a personal TED talk
Most small businesses just stay online because the cost of renting a brick and mortar location is just not possible until you have a certain level of logistics scale. Rent is higher, foot traffic is lower, and every LGS and frankly most businesses that can sell the same product online and in-store will tell you they sell more online so that minority % gain in the product sales has to be so worth it that even after paying a ridiculous rent cost, it's still worth it over holding the inventory and just selling online with better overall business margins.
Easier to blame Rudy than believe the cardboard market is often cruel and unusual🤷♂️
Imho, there is simply too much sealed product (from the past 4-7 years) sitting in every players' closet, for there to be any real long term gain that may be remotely close to an payoff similar to having bought product between ice age and 2005ish (certainly a few good sets after that to be fair)
I wish you luck and success in life, and I wish all the patreons and yt watchers the best when it comes to making independent informed decisions on how to spend their money.

As long as you stand for truth.

@@Earthboundmike only a matter a time before a moron commented.
Also its funny that some mom&pop shops blame you, but business is all about evolving. You evolve with the times and to fit your customer's needs and wants.

To be honest, the suckers are the ones who have to blame themselves. No one told them to buy AmC and GME to lose all their money

If they'd drop the restricted list, removed the mythic rarity and printed cards left and right until demand is saturated, everybody could play for a reasonable price.
But this wouldn't be a profitable step for Wizards as a company, either - so we're stuck in this overpriced draught.
