The CX-5 is by far better than the Forester. I've owned two Foresters, a 2002 and a 2010. Over the years, Subaru has cheapened up the Forester. The 2010 has a very cheap tinning feel. Although you can't beat the all wheel drive of Subaru, the 2011-2014 have been having trouble with excessive oil usage. Also 2010 has a really bad problem with mice getting into the interior of the car. My wife found dropping, so we set a mouse trap.... caught 11 mice!! I've found out that if you leave the air source set at outside air, they will find a away in. That a huge design flaw. I've just purchased a 2015 CX-5 and are LOVING it compared to the forester.
your oviously just shitting out of your mouth because you bought a cx5 now. Your the only mouse in the forester, now there's a mouse in the cx5. you just got it so be quiet.
Carlos Pereira Jeez Carlos, seems like your the one talking out of your a$$, just Google "mice in forester" and your see plenty of complaints. The other issues I mentioned are also correct. Subaru "fix" for the high oil usage is the following: bring in your Forester for a free oil change, they will document quantity of oil used, mileage, and then they want you to return when you get another 1200 miles on the car. Then they will drop the oil, measure it for usage and if the car used 8/10th of a quart or less, they consider it to be "normal", that all engines some oil. Come on now, that is no way normal... that is bull crap. At that rate you would have to add 4 1/2 - 5 quarts of oil during the recommended oil change interval. The biggest issue I have with a Forester is that I highly recommended the Forester to my neighbor, a retired school teacher, and she has the oil problem with her 2012. I feel terrible that she doesn't feel secure with the car. She also thinks the car is Tinny.
Mazda CX5 by far is the driver's car for someone who cares about driving. Toyota and Honda may feel comfortable but very sloppy with steering and suspension. CRV is best selling car mostly because people who shop in this segment don't really care too much about handling and suspension etc.. they are not buying BMW or Mercedes. Out of 3 I will take CX5 any day just because it drives very nicely and handles precisely.
At the end of the day people put reliability and looks, value and dimensions in interior. Not comfortability and ride. Usually people put those on the bottom of the list. People really don't care if the suspension is soft or stiff or the steering is sharp or numb. Like for goodness sakes, small cars and suv, cuv aka non sports car are not meant to be sporty. People keep complaining about how a car is so soft when the car aims for comfortable and soft ride and not a sharp handling low gravity steering gt3 road car. Mazda excels at the level where they tend to put their cars sporty and sharp. But at the end people don't care about its handling and ride because they want a car with great value and features and a vehicle that last forever.
I have a CX5 2016 Grand Touring AWD, and I find that the ride is a bit harsh, it feels hard bumps, it doesn't soften the bumps which I prefer in softer rides.
I would have choosen a Subaru Forester, best tracking awd, more cargo espace but the CVT transmission sucks big time. I would go with a CX5, change the radio for a navigation one i.e Pioneer 7" or Kenwood and that's it.
5 years later, i just read comment about all Honda heaters and know what ?! same year, same model and CR-V have highest value at market, think about that.

This is the soft-roader market, which Toyota designed in 1989 and gave life to in 1993 (Japan), 1994 (Australia) and 1996 for the rest of the world, with it's RAV4. Back then it was a lot smaller, engine was reasonable for the size, and a 4WD system and floor pan designed and interchanged with the ST205 Celica GT4 turbo. Now however, it's gotten a lot fatter and the engine size has only increased 400cc to offset it. Also now it has a garbage 4WD system which has an auto-disengage at 40km/h. After that it's FWD only. So it's no longer the 4WD that got the market started. They made headway into getting better power with the 2GR-FE (200kw) 3.5L V6 engine option, but they've since deleted this from the options. Now it has the 2AR-FE 2.5L version but it's still as fat as it was last generation. The CR-V has always nipped at the heels of the RAV4 ever since the 90's and now the CX-5 has to play catch-up. At least the RAV4 now has a rear bumper and moved the spare wheel off the tailgate.
I got a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander. Its reliable, very roomy, good fuel mileage, lots of features, good value, quick, makes a nice sound, and the manual feature actually works when you want it to. It'll actually go into redline! I drove the Honda and Toyota and both were boring and not fun to drive. It all came down to the Tiguan, Outlander, and Forester. Tiguan=Too expensive Forester=Cant stand a CVT Outlander=Bit noisy at highways speeds but everywhere else its great.
Well I’m glad for ya,I had to rent a car a few months ago and it was that Mitsubishi and that one was the worst vehicle I’d ever driven. Maybe it was in a wreck because it handled not only poorly but like something was wrong so I just had to buy a car and I picked the 2014 RAV4 that has way too small of tank for its fuel mileage and rides like a rock with those 18in wheels. Oh I miss my real cars! 😂
+llamaman I agree have driven all three of these vehicles and trust me the RAV4 leads the pack by a significant margarine. This review is way off on describing the characteristics of these vehicles.
+Phu Doan Trust me I'm the furthest thing from being bias. I owned the CRV and traded it in for a 2014 RAV4. I have also test driven the CX5 at the Mazda of Milford in Connecticut. They are way off on elaborating the characteristics and behavior of these SUV's

Hi, +Makesmewonder I got Mazda CX5 2.0 liters , I think its a great performer ,however, I drove the 2.5 liter and its even better. Already 50000 Km . no problems , Mazda reliability ! and price was right compering to the competition. Gas consumption is not as expected but its also my driving ....
Love to death my '03 Honda CRV with 231,xxx miles and still looks and runs fantastic, but looking to buy a newer small SUV so I can drive for Uber. The Mazda intrigues me but I've been so happy with my CRV....
Best advice I can give you Alex, (stop that train of thought right there) is don't drive for Uber. Rideshare in general, is total scam for the drivers. Be lucky if you break even. I've done 3k rides on both Uber/Lyft. Its a joke. Great for riders, a joke for drivers. Best thing I ever did was spend my time looking for something else.
"Due to the Mazda not having a suspension like a wet sponge I end up hitting eleven buttons at once! Oh and my panties are all twisted in a bunch" Edmunds you are employing some awful people to review these cars.
CRV I think is the best without the navi screen. Transmission is a proven reliable 5 speed and shifts are fast and responsive. We have the 2012 LX AWD model and it's safe, reliable, practical, and built tough. Our CRV weighs in at only 3500 pounds. My friend got one of those new Chevy Sonic LT sedans and in tips the scales at 4200 pounds!?. Easy peasy driving in snow/ice situations. Spaceous and practical interior won us over. The Mazda is a close second if I needed a sportier and stylisher ride.
Kailash Kalaiselvan Why would anyone except a moron spend that kind of money and base it on looks. That is like getting married and basing it on how it is going to bed with someone. It is a lot more important to base it on what it is like waking up next to them. They need to test all vehicles with 200,000 miles on them. Then you can see how good they really are.
CX-5 for appearance, CR-V for reliability and practicality. The RAV-4 has awful and unresponsive handling and doesn't offer anything over its competitors (except power liftgate, but eh)
Dea Garic They have come a long way in problems, and its not becoming the norm as some companies are back tracking 2016 Honda Pilot, 2017 Nissan Pathfinder will drop it) and others just not dealing with it. It makes for a dull drive and a problem in trans issues. Some right off the bat(in case of the v6's more so), and in general long term. I advise to steer clear from many owners on forums, also mechanics.
Each to their own. Toyota is best TO ME. Mazda may be for YOU. CR-V for someone else..we all have different tastes in vehicles and guess what...each company offers something that we will like.
Toyota Will be on the road far longer than any of these great cars, and it has an O.T.F. locking differential for true traction in mud and snow and ice. Sorry but Toyota is by far the best. Honda motors are great but have lower torque normally, so towing is out. Mazda's are good, but wont outlast a Toyota, and Mazda's wont hold their value like the Toyota. If the Rav4 brought back their V6, this wouldn't even be a discussion here...
I think they should test them at 100,000 miles and keep track of every repair and the cost of fuel. Everything runs great when it is new, especially if the manufacturer gives you millions in advertising. That way you can't be truthful. After people get to a certain age, it isn't that their priorities change, it is that their priorities do change. Hahahah. When the kids are grown and you start trying to get ready to retire or even before that, earn mortgage payments and saving for your kids' education are more important than driving a new car, you tend to take much better care of a car and keep it longer. The main priority swings towards the more practical, such as, will this do what I need? How long will it last? Is it safe. What are the long term reports on repairs and the actual cost of ownership. After spending most of my adult life in the auto industry, the biggest mistake I see people making is having brand loyalty. When we have that, we reward companies for making inferior products by purchasing them anyway.
In the future you guys might want to mention AWD systems for shits and giggles. I know it isn't important to most people but they do differ and make noticeable differences in light off road situations. For snow they will all work amazing garenteed (plenty of power to spin all 4, high range = less slippage, light weight).
Hmmm So, basically this was a comparison of the Rav and the Mazda. You barely even mentioned the Honda. You either buy Honda's, or Toyota's if into foreign vehicles. It's basically a personal preference, rather then which vehicle is actually better. And, some may choose the Mazda. But. lets face it, Mazda generally comes after the other 2 mentioned.
I bought a CX5 because I could not get over the unusual Toyota exterior design and CR-V looked too boring. And CX5 has best mpg. I have had three mazda's before and they were all good in reliability so it was an easy choice.
Thank you for improving your output of comparison reviews! I enjoyed this one. Please create a comparison test comparing the Acura TL vs the Audi A4. My dad is deciding his new car so that I can have his current car (a 2004 Honda Accord LX inline-4). Referring to this video, I don't like Toyotas and Hondas are everywhere, so I'd go with the Mazda CX-5.
The CX-5 is the absolute best. However, after the 72-month financing is done, everything will be rusted, its resale value will be $2,000 or less. I would 36-month lease that thing.
those cars cant touch the mazda cx5.all other reviews have picked that car.to make it easy for you all you have 2 choices in 2017.the cx5 or the vw tiquan.
To be honest I didnt even consider the Toyota. I looked at teh CRV and someone said I should look at the CX-5. I didnt like the Mazda. Its the CRV for me. Delivery in April. Looking forward to it.
Ford Escape 2014 has a "poor" rating on frontal collision safety. It basically failed the new small frontal overlap collision test (for comparison, the CX-5 has received the new 2014 safety award from IIHS). Tiguan is severely overpriced for its overall quality. If you said Subaru Forester, at least you'd have a case. The two you mentioned are seriously two of the worst in the competition.
The Tiguan is just superior in overall quality, look at its interior, there is no plastic and cheap materials...look at the tiguans engine, rarely do you find a crossover turbocharged that shares an engine with a gti. of courses you are gonna find it overpriced since its German quality, the Tiguan always has 5 star safetr rating, it combines sports and class in the crossover tier, CRV just looks for old people and does not compete with interior quality or engine power.
Intrepid Voyager No one disputes the interior quality of Tiguan. However, for a price premium of 3k-6k over its competitors, you have to ask yourself if the upgrade is worth it. Its cargo space is also very low in its class, something significant to consider. As for safety, your statement is simply false. IIHS frontal small overlap score for the 2014 Tiguan is "marginal" (which is 3 stars out of 5), and NHTSA's rating is also only 3 out of 5 for frontal crash. The J.D. Power reliability score of Tiguan (and most VW cars) is also mediocre, whereas the CR-V is 5 stars across the board. These are not vanity considerations, they're perhaps more practical qualities than simple engine performance or "premium feel". There's a reason the CR-V has been top-selling, and you may not like it, but others do, and for good reasons.
Well no one can dispute Hondas reliability, they are legendary in that department. im not really into cargo space...since i live alone. i have test driven most of the crossovers before i bought the Tiguan,on the road the CR-V is just not the same, The Tiguan , CX-5 and ford had that feeling of sportiness and handling was amazing that's the main reason along the superior quality inside out and the cool looks makes the Tiguan more appealing and ''classy'' to younger people. you should really drive both in 1 day and will feel the difference, maybe you will consider the 3k extra.
Yes, the passenger could not use the Navigation while the driver was driving. That was a big negative. We drive as a couple most times and there is no reason Nav should be locked out from Passenger input while driving. But on the Toyota it is. So, no Toyota. That left the Mazda CX-5, which I ended up buying. I bought one fully loaded, Grand Touring, Tech package. It's wonderful, does everything I wanted except for one thing. No power liftgate - they forgot that. Otherwise, it's the best.
Different class of vehicle. I think you're thinking about the Buick Encore. That vehicle competes more towards Nissan Juke, Subaru XV Crosstrek, and perhaps even the MINI Countryman and BMW X1.
I was down to the RAV4 and CX-5. I liked them both. They were both comfortable, handled well, but there were 2 negative things about the Rav4 I didn't like. The bucket seat's wings, where you sit and the sides, were too sharply angled inwards. It's like they were made for small people. When I sat I felt squeezed in, kind of like an airline seat. Plus the video screen was not user friendly, one had to go thru too many screens to get where you wanted. And the passenger couldn't use the Nav.
I think its the price point. The mid-level trim is $31k. I think with the 3 that was compared, they're top trim comparisons, and they were around $30k. I also thought that also the VW Tiguan should compared here, but also the Ford Escape (I've been seeing a ton of those on the road) and the GM twin crossovers (Chevy Equinox & GMC Terrain); however, Edmonds may view it as a midsize 2 row SUV.
you cant say that if you havent drivin it. compared to the rav4. the crv is tons more fun. so much better handling and toss-ibility, also get better brakes and nice elegent styling when you go loaded.
Yeah. Cheap tablets are quicker than some . modern infotainment systems. For me if it has Bluetooth, can shows some stats on screen, and works for basic stuff, it'll be fine.
I agree their results were emotionally unsatisfying. However, it is probably because they are all pretty damn good cars with different strengths and weaknesses.
Rav4 all the way, Bought one last year and its amazing, great gas mileage and very comfortable.

Carlos Pereira
Jeez Carlos, seems like your the one talking out of your a$$, just Google "mice in forester" and your see plenty of complaints.
Not good. She finally got her dealer to install a new short bock. Up until the replacement engine, she carried oil in the back by the gallon.
theres only mice where you live and your the dady mouse.

Pretty poor comparison guys.
Horrible review... Indefinite and no depth..
+TWENTY EIGHT I agree 100%. I own a RAV4 and have driven the CRV and CX5 they couldn't be more wrong about this comparison.
By the way, here are Edmunds results. 1st place. Honda CR-V. 2nd place. Mazda CX-5. 3rd place. Toyota RAV4.
I have a CX5 2016 Grand Touring AWD, and I find that the ride is a bit harsh, it feels hard bumps, it doesn't soften the bumps which I prefer in softer rides.
Honda is allways better
CX-5 is the best overall
#mazda cx5:D
Why did Edmonds not address the vibration issue in the Honda CRV 2015 in their review? 1000 of complaints regarding it.
You really can't go wrong with any of these three crossovers. It's the blood thirsty dealers that might change your decision.
Nice very objective review, no biases. Good job edmunds!
Reviewers never review the sound quality of stereo systems.
I cautioned to stay away from all form of CVT transmission until they come with chain driven.
Mazda! Mazda! Mazda! Mazda!
The CRV won the comparison based on the article if anyone is interested.
That sounds about right - build to last and practical
Never end a video with you should go to the website to get our conclusive ending. This ain't TV or the movies, we don't want stingers or to be continues!
We have 2012 CR-V and love it. Don't know what else to say. Pick whichever fits your needs best.
Rav and CRV they have everything, CX5 it seems very sport car, but not too off Road, no roof rails, not too much space in Trunk, etc
I love the Rav so much I bought 4 piece.
No wonder, Mazda CX-5 wins. all you need found in CX-5, safety, convenience and awesome feature.
Rav4 rules
+llamaman I agree have driven all three of these vehicles and trust me the RAV4 leads the pack by a significant margarine. This review is way off on describing the characteristics of these vehicles.
+Phu Doan Trust me I'm the furthest thing from being bias. I owned the CRV and traded it in for a 2014 RAV4. I have also test driven the CX5 at the Mazda of Milford in Connecticut. They are way off on elaborating the characteristics and behavior of these SUV's
@Phu Doan No
Helllllllll no. My dad rented a RAV4 and said it was horrible
they stabbed these vehicles to death I do not like these reviewers
Choice of 10 buyer 5x crv 4x rav4 1x cx5 fact
So which one is better??
Jesus, that was like watching 3 women trying to figure out what book to read for the next book club. Lots of hand wringing and still no decision. Piss poor comparo video.
I went for the Mazda and I love it ..
+Ofer Ravona what year did you get? I'm really thinking of getting one....can you tell me what you like/dislike about it...thanks!
Hi, +Makesmewonder
I got Mazda CX5 2.0 liters , I think its a great performer ,however, I drove the 2.5 liter and its even better.
Already 50000 Km . no problems , Mazda reliability ! and price was right compering to the competition.
Gas consumption is not as expected but its also my driving ....
An 8 km/h impact on a car with the Mazda will break the intercooler and stops when u don't even hit something
I really want one but it’s a lil over budget /:
All 3 cars are good. Just don’t buy a american brand. Because american brands sucks when it comes to reliability
The Honda CR-V is a lot of fun to drive and great gas mileage. I love my 2013 and I'm glad I bought it. Very fun to drive!
My opinion:
CRV= Fat and Ugly
Rav4= stiff
CX-5= MPG SUV (look at the mpg, its like 26 city 32 hwh for fwd!)
Shut up CRV is not fat well I think you are fat and ugly
Agreed. The CR-V is one ugly looking vehicle.
CRV is ugly. The HRV will be better looking at least. Overall the CX-5 is the best though
CX-5 for appearance, CR-V for reliability and practicality. The RAV-4 has awful and unresponsive handling and doesn't offer anything over its competitors (except power liftgate, but eh)
Yeah, both honda and Toyota are pretty reliable. But honda has those magic seats
Dea Garic Not since they put in the CVT trans
Dea Garic CVT trans sucks. If you have 130K on it with no issues, consider yourself lucky. 4cy will have less trouble.
Not exactly, CVT has become the norm and it's becoming more refined than before. And what do you mean 4cy? All the cars are 4cylinders
Why in the world did you not compare the Subaru Forrester with these other three?
Each to their own. Toyota is best TO ME. Mazda may be for YOU. CR-V for someone else..we all have different tastes in vehicles and guess what...each company offers something that we will like.
I got a 2012 crv and is perfect no complain and is perfect in snow for a mid size suv
How does the new Buick compact SUV stack up to these?
Toyota Will be on the road far longer than any of these great cars, and it has an O.T.F. locking differential for true traction in mud and snow and ice. Sorry but Toyota is by far the best. Honda motors are great but have lower torque normally, so towing is out. Mazda's are good, but wont outlast a Toyota, and Mazda's wont hold their value like the Toyota. If the Rav4 brought back their V6, this wouldn't even be a discussion here...
I have the mazda and am empressed thus far
I thought Mazda was Ford free with this CX-5? Any early info on reliability?
The 6speed transmission is from the Camry which start to show up in other Toyota model.
I think crv is the best currently I own a Honda hrv I am really impressed about it. Love Honda
In the future you guys might want to mention AWD systems for shits and giggles. I know it isn't important to most people but they do differ and make noticeable differences in light off road situations. For snow they will all work amazing garenteed (plenty of power to spin all 4, high range = less slippage, light weight).
Where is that one way road they're driving on?
just made a desktop folder on my desktop and in that folder is a link to go to my desktop ....
thanks guys!
rav 4 is best...!!
farah haque no CRV WIN
Hmmm So, basically this was a comparison of the Rav and the Mazda. You barely even mentioned the Honda.
You either buy Honda's, or Toyota's if into foreign vehicles. It's basically a personal preference, rather then which vehicle is actually better. And, some may choose the Mazda. But. lets face it, Mazda generally comes after the other 2 mentioned.
You're drunk
Edmund's off their game. #bringinslidelinevideoback
how come the tiguan is not on the menu???
u missed 2 cars , vw tiguan and hyundai santa fe
Balkan Borjakov Ok. Sante Fe Sport.
Bob Keilitz Sante fe sport is still too big, needs the Tucson, the Tiguan is out of class to.
nissan qashqai the best
I would 36-month lease that thing.
how can it be the absolute best if after 72 months it's all rusted out and worth nothing lol
those cars cant touch the mazda cx5.all other reviews have picked that car.to make it easy for you all you have 2 choices in 2017.the cx5 or the vw tiquan.
Try this one on for size:
Can't stand the burnt cherry red crystal paint, and other dark colors on the CX-5
How much do they cost?
These guys would be suited to assessing fridge freezers or dishwashers than SUV's. Wishy washy analysis and presentation
To be honest I didnt even consider the Toyota. I looked at teh CRV and someone said I should look at the CX-5. I didnt like the Mazda. Its the CRV for me. Delivery in April. Looking forward to it.
Volkswagen Tiguan and Ford Escape so much better than all 3
Ford Escape 2014 has a "poor" rating on frontal collision safety.
Well no one can dispute Hondas reliability, they are legendary in that department. im not really into cargo space...since i live alone.
i have test driven most of the crossovers before i bought the Tiguan,on the road the CR-V is just not the same, The Tiguan , CX-5 and ford had that feeling of sportiness and handling was amazing that's the main reason along the superior quality inside out and the cool looks makes the Tiguan more appealing and ''classy'' to younger people.
you should really drive both in 1 day and will feel the difference, maybe you will consider the 3k extra.
ford eco cumbust into flames is a peice of shit
Y'all didn't bother inviting the rogue? Cold
I will get the CR-V in a couple months.
And the average fuel consumption ?
+Kalex X I get 26 with a 2015 rav 4.
+dean reynolds Thanks Dean.
Your welcome, and in sport mode it is slightly faster then my wife's 04 v6 Malibu which has 200 horsepower.
Just took a 12 hundred mile trip from PA to Florida, all interstate driving and the average mpg we got was 27.4 , not as good as Toyota claim of 31.
Say what you want.... CRV is still number one selling SUV, hahahaha.
No one wants to part his 25k grand with an untested engine. The consumer knows.
Who thinks the Mazda Cx 5 is better ??
Car infotainment tech is always behind the times. Even today they aren't as good as what Apple and Microsoft could make.
These guys look and act like hostages. Loosen up, it's just a car review and a bad on at that.
TOYOTA RAV 4
