265hp is a pretty good jump in factory hp over my MK7 GTI, which came with 210hp. BUT I did buy my MK7 GTI brand new in 2017 for $23k. Now they’re $35k starting! That’s over a 55% increase for the MK8.5!! Worth it??? I’m not sure about that…
I had a MK5 GTI which I sold to a friend many years ago. When I sold it, it had 280,000 km on the dial. He drive it for 3 or 4 years and let it go with well over 400,000 km on the dial GREAT CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In UK maybe it's just 2k more for the Clubsport but in a lot of European countries, it's way more than 2k cause of the CO2 malus, so taking a standard GTI makes sense

I'm driving a mk7 GTI right now, and I'll be 100% honest with you the lack of golf ball shift knob really turns me away from these new GTIs. I know it's just a little, very minor thing to be turned off by, but golf ball knob is a tradition and for VW to ditch them all together with manual transmission in a GTI is just a "wth are they thinking" moment for me. Looks like I'll be sticking with my mk7 until mk 9 comes out.
I think the GTi definitely has its place. I leased a mk8 Golf R without adaptive suspension and I just found it crashy and loud. It’s rapid and holds the road almost as well as an Elise in my opinion but on short commutes all that performance was wasted and even in eco mode it was loud. I think the GTi has enough power for most situations but the eco / comfort settings will win it for me. The cost difference to an R with adaptive will be way more than you suggest. Even late mark 8’s are over 50k

those brakes are the standard 340mm/310mm brakes from the Passat B8 with the 240hp bitdi and 272hp tfsi engines. The brakes from the Clubsport and R have 356mm on the front and also 2 callipers insted of one, in my oppinion they should have come standard on this car too !

Hey Matt, I think your review was bang on for UK but for here in Canada it’s a bit different in terms of options. There is no Clubsport, so it’s ether GTI or Golf R. It’s a $15,000 price difference… that being said, the GTI is a relative performance bargain compared to the Golf R.

I know I’m going against the flow, but the 8.5 GTI now comes with the winter pack and rear view camera as standard plus you can add a few options to keep it under £40K. Why pay nearly another £2k tax which I hate doing plus the uplift to a Clubsport or an R as the car will be for wife and me to play with at the weekend. Totally get it if ultimate performance and experience is your thing by the time I add additional interest charges/tax/uplift looking at least another £5k pays for the mountain bike I’ve bought. Agree though not sure on the GTI logo below the mirrors! Go easy on me it’s all about choice!
The 7.5 was so much nicer. The steering wheel alone with the real metal silver brace and high quality buttons... The significantly larger instrument display.. The covering of the A Pillar corner with high quality matte plastic (completely missing on the 8). In Germany it's impossible to turn off the lane assist permanently.. Every single time you turn your car on it is turned on. The honeycomb seats option ❤ It's just sad. I'd buy another new 7.5 in a heartbeat.
Luxury car tax in the UK makes the £42k basic Clubsport a lot more over 5 years. You can get the base GTI with DCC and metallic and keep below it. Do you really need the extra performance of the Clubsport or R especially as very few see a race track. 5.4 secs to 60 is plenty fast!

Alloys remind me of the ones on the Alfa Romeo brera. They’re lovely. Golf prices are crazy though wow… £38,900 before you stick some options on it is madness😂 buying one brand spanking new is a bit daft as well. Golf’s hold their value very well so buying a nearly new one and looking after it would be the way to go for me. If I wasn’t in love with my mk7 fiesta st. She’s getting on a bit now 2017 model but I doubt I’ll ever sell. Best car I’ve ever driven handling wise and for 8k it’s amazing value. Cheap to run, reliable (relatively) and great performance to cost ratio.
Price difference in the EU is much bigger as shown in the Video (+3,5k Clubsport, +9k R). Also, you can't get the Clubsport with a hitch - important for people, which carry Bikes regulary. Finally, Clubsport and R needs premium petrol (98+), normal GTI not. So overall best balanced choice clearly is the GTI.
As the owner of a nicely modded 17 MK7 GTI SE, I have to say that it’s good that VW listened and put the real buttons back on the steering wheel. But that giant IPad screen is horrific IMO and far to large. I still believe that the MK7 gen has the best cockpit layout and hardware and with a few easy and cost effective mods I can easily surpass the power of a stock MK8.5.

Not in the UK. I had a DSG R in 2014 and the similar spec GTi was approx 5k less

17" disc on a GTI xD, you would need a 20 or 21" wheel to fit a massive brake disc like that. For context Chiron's front brake discs are 16.5".

If I can pay less for the car, I'm ok with prop rods. If they need to cut corners, a meaningless prop rod is a good place to start.

No manual transmission, despite a 50% take rate (in the US, at least). VW has completely lost the plot.

What other hatches are better overall? At best you will trade more performance for less premium materials and comfort.
