Spin and swing are two entirely different things. If the ball is spinning, then when it lands, it will turn sharply left or right. This works best for slower bowlers, because they get a sharper angle when the ball turns. So I‘ve noticed you guys have many questions regarding bowling (swing & spin etc.) and how the fielders happen to be at the right place at the right time to take a catch. So first of all let me tell you about fielding. The captain of the team talks to the bowler and decides how to set the field. The bowler bowls a certain type of ball to set the batter up to play a specific shot (it might be that they have studied the batter and know how he reacts to certain balls and what his weaknesses are). They set up the field accordingly and the ball gets caught off air and the batsmen is out. Bowlers tend to psychologically outplay the batsmen by bowling different variations, so that the batsmen thinks the next ball is going to be slow and/or swing more/less and the opposite happens. This is why it is really interesting to see them play. A good bowler can trick the batsman very well and bowl certain variations that are difficult in certain weather or pitch conditions. And a good batsman can play many variations equally well and doesn’t get out. There are two main types of bowling: spin bowling and fast bowling. In fast bowling, the bowler runs in faster and ofcourse bowls a quick pace delivery (Shoaib Akhtar, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, James Anderson, Wasim Akram and co.). What some of them can do very well is swing the ball, which is done differently than a spin ball. There are some bowlers that are good at swinging the ball one way (either in-swing or out-swing). A few cool facts for you about Malinga for you robert - Most bolwers deliver the ball over their shoulders and close to their ears. Maliga has a unique side-arm action - literally slinging it at the batsmen - hens the term "Slinga". He was a brilliant mathematician in high school before cricket cut his academic career short and he brought his insights into math and physics to determing how to get the ball to do all sorts of things at great pace. As far as I know, no other bowler has done that and it adds to the magic he creates on the field. Finally, the career of a pace bowler is very short - few go beyond 30-32 and most fade before that because the wear and tear on the body is just too great for them to continue. Malinga retired from all forms of cricket at the ripe old age 38 which is kinda a testament to his longevity.

Everyone knew what was coming but at his peak no one could stop it hitting the stamp. The trick was since his action is round arm, he get to swing the ball down rather than side ways. Thats why his yokers are more difficult to deal with than other bowlers. He has bowled most number of yokers in the history of cricket by far. If im not mistaken he has bowled 850 odd yorkers until September, 2019.
