I love your son being on camera with you. You guys have such great personalities! My husband and I enjoy watching your videos, and are learning so much about different bourbons. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us all. 😊
Really glad you are enjoying the channel!
John J Bowman is so good and such a sleeper in whiskey. The Bowman distillery is making some great stuff and they do a great distillery tour that is also free. The best whiskey I've ever had was the A Smith Bowman Cask Strength batch#1. It was 141 proof and was like apple pie with brown sugar caramel and chocolate drizzled on top of it. It didn't drink hot and was very well balanced.
JJB was a sleeper bourbon but word got out. Every WhiskeyTube channel has been talking about it for months and it has pretty much disappeared from shelves where I live.
Wow that sounds fantastic!
I was in Vegas in April, and went to shop whiskey... found the Compass Box's I wanted and the Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered, and walked away happy.... can't wait to go back and see what else they have. That bowman is on my list, but for some reason is a "forgotten" when I go shop. Same with that Penelope. We can get the Bulliet, but its 85 here............... so its staying on the shelf.
great show... cheers.
Thanks John!
Bulleit Bourbon was contract distilled at Four Roses. The Rye is sourced from MGP. They've been distilling bourbon at the ex-Stitzel-Weller, not sure if the normal releases are that juice, but I think the Barrel Strength have been since batch 6
Found a bottle of SW The Younger this morning
Frey Ranch is fantastic. Very flavorful for a 90 proofer.
A nice and diverse selection of whiskies…and there’s nothing wrong with stocking up on all five. Nice job guys.
Thanks for having this episode. I’ll be looking for all of these and even more so to try them out.
Bulleit Barrel Strength is one of my favorites. It's not a all night sipper, but a really good pour.
Bulleit used to contract 100% of their distillate, but they have since opened their own distillery east north-east of Shelbyville, KY. they may still contract part of their new make. Barton 1792 was their contractor for their bourbon, and MGP was supposedly making their Rye. I can confirm the first half, and only heard stories about the second half.
Appreciate the info!
I just picked up bowman small batch for $30 and it’s great! Going to be a staple in my collection for sure! Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered is $60 by me here in NY
Bowman is a Blantons killer.
Shhhhh don’t tell everyone 😂
Ya buddy for sure!
Thank you gentlemen
I have learned a lot from you two
Your both insightful and easy to like
Keep up the good work
I love this price point!! This is my happy place for spending on whiskey. Sadly...I am often going above and beyond that...Dallas, TX is an expensive town to be a whiskey drinker.
Really enjoyed this video. Not too expensive and at the proof points that I like. Will be on the lookout for these.
I will agree Frey Ranch Bourbon is darn good! Was at my brother in law's over the Christmas holiday in Sparks/Reno, NV and was able to get to know this distillery well. Their 100% winter rye bottled in bond is so fantastically good! Also tried a 100% corn, 100% wheat, and a barrel strength quad Bourbon...each knocked my socks off in one way or the other. Their story is no gimmick...Colby and Ashley Frey are a real deal down to earth couple...
KURT, TRENTON!!! You guys killed this!!! I def love the more "bargain" bourbons!!! This really give me some good stuff to try!! Congrats on your barrel!!! CHEERS to both!!!
Appreciate that Tim!
2-row barley is a barley primarily used in beer brewing, it has a lower enzyme content compared to the 6-row which is normally used in distilling to convert corn starches to sugars. Which kind of explains the 12 percent in the Frey ranch. As for the 2/6 row, when you look down the tops of the barley plant, 2 row has…well 2 rows, 6 row has 6.
Thanks for this great information!
I am absolutely in agreement - the diamonds in the rough are a joy to find....
We bought the Bulleit in 2021 and loved it. I wish we could purchase it locally.
Super new in my bourbon journey
I tried frey ranch and has been my favorite by far
Out of
Reflection blue run
Jack Daniels single barrel barrel proof
Smoke wagon small batch
And going to be trying all the other varieties of Frey ranch and smoke wagon 😊
Just bought the Penelope because of this podcast, Happy your making a difference !!
Thank you!
Great review! Just ordered some Frey Ranch - the bourbon and the rye...excited to try it!
I’m drinking Penelope Barrel strength and love it. Was not favorably impressed with my one pour of Frey Ranch, but full disclosure, it was after a double pour of Stag Jr. I have not tasted the other three.
Guys, thank you for the review. I absolutely love Smoke Wagon.
Gosh I love when you guys review bottles on my shelf that I just haven't got open yet. You nailed three at once and it makes me excited to get some friends over and get these opened.
In the future, it would be great if you'd actually list the bourbons themselves in the description. Makes it easier to remember them when I'm in the store...
I will mention that to Trent…again. Kids.,.
I really appreciate the honest opinion where two people can differ. This format is great and the conversation is light. I'm going to go out and see if I can get any of these that you covered and look forward to future tastings.
Thank you!
Love New Riff one of my favorite bottles was a New Riff store pick
Love your guys's Channel kind of got me into doing the tasting of bourbon thanks
Got my John J. on sale... gonna open it this weekend.
Hope you love it!
Great video
These are all great choices, guys and they are all on my radar. I've had a local store pick of the Penelope Toasted Barrel Strength since June that I absolutely adore!
Having had a single pour of Blanton's and then a single pour of the John J Bowman, I will pick the Bowman hands down every time moving forward. I completely agree with you both that it is fantastic and very much worth the money if you are able to find it.
I agree!
You can find Bowmans around Central Indiana readily available. My wife and I visited their distillery last September during our honeymoon out to Virginia. Nice place and good bourbon.
A friend just gave me the Smoke Wagon uncut, unfiltered for my birthday. Had never heard of it before. Happy to hear that your review of this bottle was very positive. Can't wait to try the big daddy!
Just bought some Bowman Bros. bourbon on a trip out of town. Can't find John J. Bowman anywhere. I've heard it is very good and a Blanton's substitute. Not sure if you've also heard that? Hoping the Bowman Brothers will be close.
Great video, as always.
Another great great show guys! Thanks loved it!
Really good video, guys! Those are great selections at reasonable prices (if you can find them). But please, I'd also like to hear about those disappointing buys that didn't make the cut. My money is too tight to waste buying sub-par bottles.
I'm glad you highlighted Frey Ranch, a family operation of self-described "whiskey farmers" who truly do it ground to glass. I respect that highly. You should try their rye.
Cheers, Kurt & Trenton.
Would love to try more of their offerings!
That smokewagon uncut is delicious
And the JJ SiB is my favorite but it is super hard to find. It opens up to even better flavor after a week. Holy moly!!!
Would love to see a tasting lineup of the Barton Costco bourbons!
Picked up and tried the the Bulleitt BP at Justin's House of Bourbon in Louisville a few month's ago. Just reminded me I need to try this again
I just started watching your channel and I really enjoy the knowledge and great inter action between both of you. (Also a subscriber) I've learned a great deal. I recently started my Bourbon/Scotch collecting and have been buying and trying a lot of what is being featured on your channel.
Had the Bulleit, and it took a couple of glasses to grow on me, but I ended up liking it a lot. I’m in western WI, and it was $57 back in March this year.
It did surprise me a bit first sip as well. Love the fresh notes though.
Uncut the Younger is one of my favorite buys. Smoke Wagon in general is really great. I'll pick any of them up if I see them. Just tried a bottle of Driftless Glen that I was really impressed with as well.
The Bowman has "copper funk" on it.
Take Frey Ranch, add 2-3 more years and 10 more proof and it'll be legendary.
Oh absolutely no doubt!
Just bought a bottle of Frey Ranch Barrell Proof Barrell Select--couldn't believe I found it! The word is getting out on Frey Ranch.
Ive had the frey ranch once and it is fantastic. Never see it in MA, my buddy got it online. The only bowman i ever see is the port finish, i believe Isaac bowman. My mothers in TX now and she seen smoke wagon. She seen the younger, uncut unfiltered, small batch, and one other. At first i told her to grab me the younger, then changed my mind and said grab the uncut unfiltered. Now i wish i stuck with my gut. Again, never see any smoke wagon up here. She also found a still austin cask strength single barrel store pick. The Penelope, i see the toasted often, especially store picks. I dont think i ever tried one though. I had one of the first versions of architect and was not a fan. Every review i see on architect, everyone loves it. Must have got better in later versions, but the one my bro has isnt good at all. Got it just before xmas 2022. Dying to find a bottle of the frey ranch since the one pour i had was phenomenal.
As long as I live in VA. Bowman single barrel is a must have.
Several years ago, I toured the Bulleit Distillery in Louisville, KY, which was being renovated and I believe may have been the former Stitzel Weller Distillery grounds/buildings. They were not distilling at that site then and I believe Four Roses was distilling bourbon for them. I understand they now have two other facilities, one in Lebanon and one in Shelbyville, KY.
So glad you liked the younger and you were able to find a bottle!
Thanks for the sample! Helped me know I needed to find one while we were in Vegas.
@@slbdrinks any time!
Looks like I have a few more to look for. Have been looking for JJB for a while now but cannot find it near me in FL.
I get a 'lil of that Magic Eraser smell on tha Fray Ranch.
Good timing. I picked up a Smoke Wagon small batch today. First time seeing it in WI!
Good deal!
Love the John J Bowman great stuff.
I love that Penelope and the Bowmans is amazing
Really appreciate your reviews of moderately priced bourbons, if we could only get some of them in MO, it’s slim pickings here so have to travel or have shipped to get your varieties, thank you!
Bowman is basically a great alternative to Blanton’s. Roughly same distillate from Buffalo Trace.
You bet!
Come north to Wisconsin and visit J Henry. They grow all their own grains, too. Great people, great whisky!
Nice!
Bulleit bourbon is distilled by Four Roses, while Bulleit rye is distilled by MGP. Bowman is BT mash bill #2 but triple distilled and aged in Virginia.
Hmm from what I read it was mash 1?? I will look into that!
I’m on the look out!
I was really impressed with the Smoke Wagon Uncut The Younger,... I actually like it better than my bottle of regular SWUCUF.
Yo Woods! I can see your house from here.
@@HanginAZ Hey, Hanging,... don't mind the peeling paint, and watch out for the dog.
Only had a few sips but I think it’s great!
We get the Smoke Wagon products down here in TX. I have all of them but that one, even though I've bought two bottles. lol I bought them for friends and the last time I went in, I had to make the decision between it and 1792 BiB. It's $39 here at Specs! I'm also trying to get my brother to drive to Fredericksburg to get me a JJB. We don't see them here at all. That Bulleit and Penelope store pick BP are both very good.
I bought my bottle of John J. Bowman at a Spec's in Clear Lake, and I see the Isaac Bowman at the Spec's in Beaumont a lot. They get them, but not a lot and they go quick.
I think Specs puts most of the hard to find stuff back for the black level key club members nowadays though, so you don't see it out on the shelf very often.
I'm with Trenton....four grain is my favorite!!! Great show again 🥃👍
I have really come to enjoy Penelope, they are doing some really good whiskeys. The architect series, the tokaji rye, the barrel strengths, this one, etc. All at affordable prices which is really awesome with what’s going on with prices today. Great video and I got to try the Frey Ranch, cheers.
Agree with what I have tried with Penelope!
Penelope sells so well in Missouri that they had a special Missouri release.
I have that Frey Ranch, but I haven't poped it yet.
Cheers buddy great video 🥃
Frey Ranch is killing it. If you have a chance to get the barrel strength, don’t pass it up, it is amazing!
I haven't tried the Smoke wagon younger, but the uncut unfiltered is amazing
So I was at the Bowman distillery about 2 weeks ago where I asked about the mash bill. From what they told me it is actually an original recipe from the owners that was distilled at the Buffalo trace and then brought back over to Virginia and then distilled again. Buffalo trace ended up purchasing Bowman and it is now one of their sister companies. So very similar to mash bill 1 but their own recipe.
Thanks for the info!
The Frey Ranch is amazing. Looking for a single barrel to try it at that higher proof. 🥃
Yesss!
JJ Bowman SB is my go to Bourbon
The JJB Single Barrel is available where I live in VA. But as others have noted, it is often unavailable in our ABC stores, and when it appears, it doesn’t stay long on the shelf. It is quite good.
The only one that might be in a store here is Bowman, but even that is currently sold out at the Total Wines and BevMos near me. I have heard good things about Penelope.
Got 3 of those bottles: Love the Penelope, Smoke Wagon, and Bowman
Yes! Enjoy!
Excellent episode guys! I went to the Bulleit Distillery. I asked the tour guide about MGP. They make their own bourbon distillate, but their Rye is contract distilled by Ross and Squibb (MGP). My favorite Bulleit is their single barrel.
Penelope is also made by Ross and Squibb.
BTW, Frey Ranch makes a very good BIB rye and a kick butt Cask Strength Single Barrel bourbon.
Would love to try more of their offerings!
I sipped on some Penelope barrel strength tonight. Not the toasted though. It’s a toss up for me between the Penelope and the Rabbit Hole Dareringer as my favorite bourbons. Or my High West store pick…..wait ok I’m gonna have to think about this some more 🤔
I love the Dareringer as well!
Yes mpg .
If you can find Noble Oak batch 1 it is awesome. Their other ones not very good but the first batch was great. I'd bought 6 and now can't find it in NC.
More of the great advice we come to expect from SLB!
I appreciate the addition of the bottle names in the description, please include this with all your videos
Haven't had any Bulleit I like.
Nothing but a mouthful of black pepper.
Yuck.
But the Bowman single barrel is tasty.
Agreed with Treton, Legend must be at least 45 years old . . . LOL ! Only the BUlleit barrel proof came ot my market , sadly. . .
I doubt you guys would be able to find this anywhere near you, but there is a distillery in my hometown, Ennis, Montana. Willie's Distillery has been around since 2010 (I think), and I really enjoy their stuff. Their Bighorn Bourbon and Devil's Brigade Whiskey are both very good. If you ever run across their stuff, I definitely recommend it!
It’s great to find local distilleries that produce great whiskey!
I live in VA and the Bowman is pretty easy to find. It makes me ignore Blanton’s because it has so much more flavor to me and I like the added proof. Great review.
I have to agree. Great flavors!
I live in Illinois and picked up a bottle of smoke wagon small batch for 55 bucks, I was blown away how tasty it was
I got some barrel strength a couple years ago. It was super tasty
Love the family affair!
Should you get the chance, get a bottle of Conviction Bourbon. From Southern Grace Distillery, it’s a 105.2 proof product distilled in a former prison. Currently available in North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. I came across it in Myrtle Beach and have really enjoyed it!
Thanks for the recommendation!
JJ Bowman is amazing I always keep a back up! smoke wagon the younger for the money is killer
Bowman’s Single barrel is so good! Just picked up 2 more bottles
No doubt!
Bowman SiB has been around a while...I've been drinking it for a few years now. One of the best bottles in the 50 to 60 range, and puts Blanton's to shame. It has been Buffalo Trace juice for a long time, but Bowman is supposed to be putting their own juice in it soon.
Agreed vs Blantons! Glad I was able to find one, finally!!
I'll look for them!😀
First time ever using patreon and you sold me on the New Riff pick cause I love them. Cheers!
Thank you for joining us!
Bowman brothers which I believe you can only find at ABC is one of my favorites! Believe it's about $35, I'm in FL.
Another good video. I've only seen one of those Bourbon's in the stores for my area. In Virginia, Our spirits are purchased via ABC store..Bowman being a Virginia Distillery is sold in every ABC store I have went into.
I've never tried it before, The also make Vodka and Rum. I have avoided purchasing due to that fact.
After all, The old adage, Jack of all Trades, Master of none..
After seeing this video, I may very well purchase a bottle on my next visit to the ABC store.
BTW, Kudos on that Buffalo Trace Video, I had never tasted Benchmark..Picked up a bottle of the number 8 after seeing that video and was surprised at the great taste.. A very light mellow bourbon for some lazy evenings.
Bulliet was 4 Roses (rumored) - very similar mashbill. So if it is 4 roses it’s contracted not sourced. Has not been confirmed.
Bullet tastes like 4 roses to me
I admit I have not looked at all the comments... But I want to say the Frey Ranch is available for order online in 36 states. And it's a great buy! They also have a Bottled-in-Bond, 100% Rye that's fantastic. IMHO
Interesting...Smoke Wagon isn't everywhere in my area, but it's available from time to time. I'm not that enamored of it, but you can't get it, and love it. I can't get Hard Truth Rye here, but I bet it's not even on your radar in Indiana 😂 That Bulleit though, I want.
