How to Change the Battery on a Seiko Watch, Grand Seiko 9F Movement

- This video is a tutorial on how to change a quartz battery on a Grand Seiko wristwatch. Specifically for the SBGN003, SBGN005 and SBGN007 family. Most of these steps will work for other quartz based watches. This video is for educational purposes only and I would still advise amateurs take their watch to a licensed professional if they want to guarantee their watch isn't damaged during the battery changing process.
Starts the video saying he’d taken the watch out of the safe, ends the video saying wear your watches 😂
Just ordered one of these. Looking forward to getting my hands on it.
Great video but please change the intro music 😬
What kind of copyright free music would you suggest? I’m always open to ideas!
is the same method can be applied to change the battery on a 8J movement as well?
a nice decorated movement like that deserves an properly aligned battery in my opinion
Mea culpa 😂
When you pull the crown out, does it stop the second hand?
I don’t have a quartz watch so I am not sure about that.
Thanks!
Yes it does
The blue dial is SBGN005
Ya, it was too late to edit once I heard it. I had just ordered an SSK003 which was blue 🤦♂️

@@burbinghard Good video. I am going to change my battery today.
I have a 9f and it stopped after 1.5 years. second hand in the 12 position. never noticed the 2 second batter warning. how long does this phase normally last? I feel I would have noticed it. the second hand is wanting to move but doesn't. does this sound like it's broken or a battery issue? any advice welcome.
I would guess it’s a cheap battery issue. Higher quality batteries tend to last longer and should still be putting out some power for a longer period of time. I use high quality batteries and will typically see the double tick, and even a triple tick (every 3 seconds) as the battery continues to drain. Cheap batteries have thinner battery walls and don’t last as long. I usually see the double tick for more than a week before I change the battery. I’ve never ran it all the way down just to measure the length of time the low battery indicator has.
@@burbinghard it will be the factory Seiko battery so won't be due to that I don't think. you'd still expect the 2 second warning though?
I didn't see any 2 second tick when my original 3.5 year old battery died.
if i do this will my Seiko still be water resistant? It's 27 years old, tia.
Better to let GS do it.
Haven't seen you on the streams lately, Burbinghard come back!
😂 I will. Lots of afternoon sports ⚽️ right now with the family.
Looks pretty much like changing the battery on any other quartz watch. After watching a bunch of watchmaker videos where they're super fastidious about not scratching anything or getting the tiniest amount of dust inside the case this video is kind of a crack up. He's not thrashing the thing of course but he's certainly not taking any extra care not to scratch the back of the case. Just treats is like a watch. Reminds you that they aren't accually delicate jewelry.
You always need to replace the case back gasket and as a rule you will find that Grand seiko will replace the crown , crown tube, tube gaskets and re pressure check for WR. Changing the battery is easy. I would always send back to GS to complete the job . The temptaion is to do it yourself but sooner or later its going to let you down . Not worth the worry for $100 every three years
The GS service costs about $400, the cost for a 9f movement replacement is less than $500. I’ve been changing my own watch batteries for 15 years without issue. I replace gaskets when they get old or crack/warp. Even if I were to have a catastrophic issue someday, I will have saved money the DIY way. Knowing I’m guaranteed to save money this way reduces my stress to zero.
@@burbinghardthis is an interesting perspective, and I appreciate you sharing it
That’s a 005
I know, I just received a SSK003 (blue dial) and confused my model numbers. The process is the same for the 003 though.
Sort of sucks. I have a Casio watch cost me 30 bucks the battery lasted 10 years. Spend a few thousand dollars for the GS & battery doesn’t last 3 years…..WOW
I’m guessing your Casio is also digital. The GS is also accurate to 10 seconds a year and thermally compensated. It no doubt uses more power to achieve this.
Mine lasted well over 3 yr
