      Agreed. Firewatch's biggest strength is how real it is. The voice acting, the work, the plot points... everything.
      Reality is messy, and more often than we like there are no perfect endings. Firewatch not having one is the ONLY proper way to finish this game, imo.

    A really great game that subverts expectations of murderers and government conspiracy to something much less fantastical but much more grounded and real, which helps the message of facing your problems to really hit home and feel much more personal. Every character in the game is running away from something. Henry is running from facing his wife, Delilah is avoiding her boyfriend after the murder of his brother, and Ned is running from having to cope with his sons death. It’s a story that needs multiple playthroughs, and the ending is definitely not a bad thing. This game should be a 10/10

      paussi00 If your talking npc interaction, very little. The story is told through flashbacks and finding clues to what happened as well as some narration from the player character. If you mean world interaction; it's not on skyrim's level of being able to pick up everything you see, but it was enough where I thought it wasn't lacking in that department.

    - SHORT REVIEW - NO SPOILERS -
    I just completed it a few minutes ago , and I really do agree that the ending is a bit if a let down. I explored and walked around a lot more than a lot of people probably would, but the game still only lasted about 7 hours. I know a lot of people are praising the game for its lack of combat, but without any kind of confrontation in that way, the gameplay does just revolve around walking and talking, which is relaxing (the visuals and voice acting really is fantastic)but there really isn't that much else. It never gets dark enough to be creepy (even inside a cave - missed opportunity there IMO), lack of predator/hostile human encounters mean it's never really that scary/exciting, and the only time my heart rate increased was when I thought I might get to actually SEE Delilah. Also, warning, if you are one of those people that finds yourself easily attached to fictional characters (E.G Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite, or your partner/companion in Fallout 4), you're gonna leave the game feeling a little heartachey, since your only interaction is over that radio, and also it's a game...
    Overall it was a really great experience, but its short length, anticlimactic story, and lack of many interesting gameplay features make it more of a £6-10 ($10-15) sort of game, not a £15 ($20) and unless you really want it right now, I would recommend holding off until you can get it on sale, because then it would be REALLY worth it.
    If anyone has any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them :)

    The game is amazing and I learned to love the ending, sure it wasn't like most other games, it didn't have a breathtaking reveal, but that's what I love about it, IT'S REALISTIC. It's not a fantasy and movie like story, it's supposed to be like the real world and it really shows, it's something that can really happen. I was bummed out when the game finished but the more I thought of it the more I admired the writing and the overall game. Kudos to the developers and voice actors, they made this game feel like it's dripping the word "human" from every crack.

    I bought this game on Friday night after having a stressful week as well as a lot of personal issues. This game was the perfect escape... Although I found the ending to be quite underwhelming, I felt like the narrative as a whole circled itself very maturely. The game stayed true itself; meaning that you remained isolated for the entire game without facial interactions, which supported the game's concept and premise well. I also cannot stress enough about the amount of times I had to stop in awe just to soak in the beautiful environment...
    Great review IGN. A lot can be said about this game, but I feel as though it's best to let each individual experience it by their own terms.

  • @felisasininus1784
    @felisasininus1784 6 років тому +72

    -People who dislike the ending are people who like things to be predictable and don’t like it when their viewpoints are being challenged.
    -The climax was the moment when the grounded-in-reality truth was revealed, it is anything but anti-climatic.
    -The reason why these people feel disappointed is that the ending happened outside of their expectations, their previous prediction that they made up in their heads are proven to be absurd and false, and they don’t like it when they’re wrong, the grounded story of the game doesn’t make them feel smart, and these people sure as hell love to feel smart, even without being smart at all most of the time.

    • @clayconger
      @clayconger 6 років тому +6

      Defying expectations doesn't stop it from being anticlimactic, and not everyone who didn't like it only wants things to make them feel smart.

    I absolutely loved this game. I think that the ending was both anticlimactic, but also right. There was a moment in the game where I actually annoyed Delilah, driving her away from the radio as a moved through the woods. Occasionally, I caught myself looking at just about everything in my path to make sure that I wasn't missing some sort of extra dialogue from my beloved companion. I then realized that Delilah, and the relationship with Henry and Delilah, just so happened to be the best part of the game. I even went back on a save and restarted the whole day, just because I didn't want to annoy her. It's the little things that draw you in to a game, making you really feel for these characters, that when you make them angry, you truly feel bad about it. I think this is what makes the game so beautiful and so haunting at the same time.

    This reviewer gets it. It's the power of an emotional connection told through storytelling, and this game really nails it. Games like these have the capability to tell a story we can relate to more than a high budget hollywood production can. And on that merit alone, it deserves all the praise it has received.

    The constant build up of tension and paranoia without a climax ending is a change of pace from most games. It shows how not all stories "end with a bang", and that's just like real life. Not all stories end with a cliffhanger or satisfying defeat, and this game shows that perfectly.

    • @demian6761

      That's true.

    • @SUNSET69
      @SUNSET69 8 років тому

      It isn't. Sure the game looks great, sure the story is awesome, and of course the small dev team worked extremely hard to make it, but in the end, indie dev teams can't (most of the time) create triple A games that have dozens of hours of content.
      A fair price in my opinion would be 10$ because of the effort the devs went to to make Firewatch, if that. Because of the percentage Valve and Sony are taking from each sale, they had to sell it for 20$ to make any sort of profit compared to how hard they worked on it.
      (Sorry for long post I can't help myself.)

    Well, Wikipedia is not so shy about spoiling the end of the story, nor are they a bit concerned about posting a warning (other than the heading, "Plot".) So go on over there if ya' gotta know. I don't get freaked by spoilers; they often help me decide about a product. Just like how this review sent me to Steam to find Firewatch for myself.

Having personally backpacked in the Wyoming wilderness for 3 months a few years ago it was crazy (almost weird) the lack of wildlife. Some birds, squirrels and some goats on the Plateaus there it was pretty much desolate of wildlife.

    I could definitely understand peoples' frustration with the "anticlimactic" ending. But I think that plays a huge roll in the message of the game, being that we as humans experience emotions, situations, and more that can affect an entirety of what sometimes could be something viewed as being small in hindsight. Sure, you can't change the ending. But I think with the structure of this game, it ends in a super sad and anticlimactic way the forces you to just imagine and decide for yourself what happens in their futures, given all of the information this game gives you as a whole.
    But I'll be honest. I was REALLY sad and disappointed about not seeing Delilah.

    Bought and completed the game within about 2hrs this morning. My thoughts... The writing is mediocre (with unnecessary swearing and sad relationship dynamics), but is hard to notice because the voice acting is superb. What makes a great story is its ending -- the conclusion, the climax -- which is almost non-existent. It felt cheap and contrived, to develop the characters and the plot only to have it end in such a dull fashion. The game's conclusion seemed to betray its own heading. And in fact, the climax occurs in the cave the second time, which is between the middle and end. The game also had identity crisis. I don't know if it was supposed to be about Henry and Delilah individually, their relationship, Ned and Brian, or what (this is exacerbated by the ending). The gameplay is shallow. It's there to facilitate the story. The game has framerate issues, to the point that it froze on me. The sound is good, the environments are pleasant to view but feel empty. I hate to sound negative but it was a waste of time and money. Alan Wake does everything this game does and more at a higher quality.

    Who destroyed the two teen girls camp? Who called Delilah when you listened to her call? Who knocked you out (prolly Ned), and what was the reason for knocking you out? Why was there 3 beds in the tent where they worked? AND WHY DID NED INSPECT HENRY AND DELILAH, what was his reasons? and who were the other two he was inspecting? Gawd, so many questions. A great game, but a bit short and a dissappointing ending imo.

      Just finished the game and you have voiced every single question i have about it. The call Henry overheard could probably be the developers way of making fun at audiences who constantly watch everything in a movie/series, hoping for any signs of foreshadowing and trying to find meaning in every shot when there really isn't Or maybe it's just part of Henry's character. But the rest.....man was i hungry for more answers!

He magically built a high tech surveillance compound out of crap he found laying out in the woods? It felt a little too convenient in a otherwise solid game.

      +kevstew26 Same. The disappointing ending as well as how the game is only 4 hours and costs $20 brought it down to an 8 for me. Also the ending of the game created plot holes in the rest of the story which is annoying. It's the relationship between Henry and Delilah, the amazing voice acting, beautiful graphics, and how up until the end the mystery was interesting, that makes it an 8 for me.

    McCaffery, how the hell does IGN score this a 9.3, and Gamespot a 7.0?! A 9.3 places Firewatch in elite gaming company; you know, something that could be mentioned in the same breath as GTA 5 without shame... is Firewatch really *that* good? How come your review doesn't mention gameplay mechanics? How do I actually *play* this game, or is it just like a video game version of a book? If Firewatch's "hooks" are not centered around action or puzzles or strategy, then the story and characters must be OUTSTANDING to warrant a great score. Right? And if those elements were not outstanding, which seems to be in question here, why in the world does it get an outstanding review score? I think you need to explain that more clearly, otherwise, I think Gamespot gave a more accurate score, and I bet Metacritic will settle closer to 7.0 than 9.0+.

    • @andrewcase2010
      @andrewcase2010 8 років тому +3

      Not everyone at IGN sat down and reviewed this together. 9.3 is just McCaffrey's score for the game. He can only tell us how much he liked the game.. These number scores are always entirely subjective anyway.. It's way better to just ignore the number scores and just read the review. The actual meat of the review will tell you way more about whether or not you'll like the game.

    • @Riviera501
      @Riviera501 8 років тому

      That's why I addressed my comment towards McCaffery, and I get that he may have really enjoyed the game, but that takes away all objective value of the critique if these professional review scores are gonna be "just my feelings". I can get that from any person on the internet. I'm at IGN for professional reviews from objective, experienced critics, not just it made me feel the good feels at some parts 9/10 "Amazing"!
