This is David after the rollercoaster that was Deep Purple. He went from being an unknown from Redcar to fronting one of the biggest bands in the world, only to see it come to an end in Liverpool in 1976. He was at his best here, singing in his own key, with his bluesy r'n'b direction. Whitesnake would be formed a year later and would eventually reunite him with Jon Lord and Ian Paice. The period between 1973 and 1984 was his best time vocally, but the high range screeching plus the smoking and drinking killed his voice later on. Coverdale is a blues singer, not a heavy metal singer.
I think that he has always had an excellent voice in each of his periods. I even got the chance to see a Whitesnake show in 2016 and it's still amazing Comparing him to Ian Gillan who definitely lost his voice since Born Again David has always been very versatile
Played this album to a friend of mine in the mid-80s who had all the Whitesnake LPs up to Saints & Sinners. Got to the third track of this LP and he suddenly went, "Is this David Coverdale?" Yup. Best thing he ever did, no?

I agree. I bought this album when it first came out and I still go back to it, 'time and again'. There is a purity and a feeling of melancholy to it that touches my heart with every listen, still today. That got lost from the later Whitesnake albums but here, we have the boy from Redcar finding his true self again.
It's seems it ain't enough to get down on your knees and pray... My God this song is so melodically meaningful, its a timeless masterpiece that sadly not enough people even knows exist.
What a soulful song, love the whole album, never get tired of hearing this particular track, just breaks me every time I hear it, David’s vocals on this song are as good as it gets, waiting at the station ,one way ticket in hand screaming “ how long has the train been gone “.
early Coverdale is truly a treat -nothing against anything he's done since as there are gems all along the way -check out Whisper A Prayer For The Dying -nuff said
Now that's what music is supposed to sound like! I hate the melancholic mournful feeling I get when I listen to music from that era. Like mourning a tragically long lost lover! It seems the world's lost its' emotional sensibilities for the sake of commercial viability and sales potential compounded by the advent of bits and bites, America's Got Talent and the X-Factor. The only silver lining though... makes exiting this wretched world that much easier.
I know people use the adjective 'underrated' at the first available opportunity to apply to anything that didn't sell 10 million records, but this really is underrated. It's almost completely unknown or forgotten, but it's fucking terrific. I used to have this on LP back in the 80's but I lost it. Right ,I'm getting a new copy next week, no doubt about it
With that voice it's a no-brainer anyway. In that period his songwriting chops are exemplary. If I'd been a manager back then, I'd have followed him to the world and back.
DC had one of the most beautiful voices, ever. Hands down. There's just something that sets him apart from the rest of his (our) era. Other guys like Bon Jovi could sing, yeah. Or hit the highest of notes, yeah. But DC had soul. He makes ya feel..
Actually Simon Phillips played on the original recording on David Coverdales first album 'WhiteSnake'. this is a rerecorded version for his second album 'Northwinds' which featured Tony Newman on drums.
Simon plays on the track Say You Love Me, only, on the Northwinds album.... if you listen closely you´ll hear the difference from Tony Newman. Simon plays on all tracks on Whitesnake thogh as you stated.
Cleveland and north riding of Yorkshire finest export. Bettys unofficial spokesperson for Yorkshire tea too. Ha ha ! The northern bellows . Best voice in the world
Uma pena que não exista registros dessa música ao vivo. Acho que é o Coverdale no piano, faz tempo que olhei a ficha ténica, mas como ele vem de família de músicos, acredito que seja ele, seria legal ver isso ao vivo, quem sabe.
When Coverdale still had soul. Some music still does have depth; you just have to search for a while (Larkin Poe, Rhiannon Giddens, Natalie Merchant, Rachel Sermanni).
Great song from one of the best albums of the 70’s, seriously underrated!
David Coverdale, one of the finest singers of blues songs, big fan of everything he has done
It's very comforting knowing Mr Coverdale's voice has the effect on other people
this is a rare album i have it in the loft picked it up in 81 in birmingham never get tired of it

Agreed. 78-84 was the peak....although I do like the later era, this is where he is at his best for sure.
I also agree. Northwinds and 1987 were his best eras. This Northwinds I like the most. He should’ve continued with this r n b

Wonderful, Coverdale at his best.
This album is possibly Coverdale's finest moment.
true 👍😎
....for me one of the best blues /hardrock singers ever ....!!!

One of the best for sure and he still is
Indeed! The very best of all! Such an amazing singer!

An absolute favorite. Have thought about having this playing as the curtain comes up and I'm there in my box.
Northwinds
David Coverdale
Taking it easy, taking it slow
Riding home to lay my body down
Thought about it long enough to let it slip away, yeah
But I feel like a stranger here today
Lost in who across the water
Took me far away from home
It seems it ain't enough to get down on your knees and pray, yeah
I've been waiting for the sun to shine
But the rain took my spirit away
I'll take the sun before the rain any day, oh lord
Call on the northwinds when any clouds gets in my way
Nothing ever changes, the song remains the same
Feel I got a one way ticket, oh I'm sitting, sitting on an empty train
It's been a such a long time, on a black and ribbon road
Taking it easy, living from day to day
Sometimes it ain't so good when you find it so high
Riding on the northwind you'll never get the feeling to try
I'll take the sun before the rain any day, oh lord
Call on the northwinds when any clouds gets in my way
Nothing ever changes, the song remains the same
Feel I got a one way ticket, oh I'm sitting, sitting on an empty train
Oh yeah
Northwinds make it oh so easy
Make me live my life too slow
It seems it ain't enough to get down on your knees and pray
I've been waiting for the sun to shine
Though the rain took my spirit away
I'll take the sun before the rain any day, oh lord
Call on the northwinds when any clouds gets in my way
Nothing ever changes, the song remains the same
Feel I got a one way ticket, oh I'm sitting, sitting on an empty train
So tell me how long has the train been gone? baby
Tell me how long has the train been gone?
Tell me how long has the train been gone?
So tell me how long has the train been gone? Oh
Tell me how long has the train been gone?
Oh hmmm
I even missed an empty train

Michael Fried Yep....really sucks that this is such a “lost” and unknown song. Seriously a classic
I bought soo many early whitesnake albums up to saints n sinners on tape n tis beauty.... soo much soul ere its magnificent
Wore this out in the 70's so it's been a long time.
Beautiful voice , Beautiful track....
I am a NorthWind...born in 1978!
78 was a great year for me, I was 13
I think this is The Cov's finest vocal.
Hard to argue. Beautiful.
I always thought that too.Just not as well known. X

Aewsome!!! I have it on vinyl to this very day. Great album, great rock´n roll.
That's one special minstrel...love ya David 🙏💕
Outstanding.
full of soul, masterpiece!
When he did great music😮
Excelente!
A song on my Walkman going back to Tidworth in the 80’s ...siting on an empty train.
This song is my favorite of David's, all the time.
Has the feel of Paul Kossoff/Back Street Crawler's 'Stealing My Way'.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard ♥️
I bought this many moons ago. Coverdale had everything that Gillian hadnt. Blues, soul, presence
👍👌

Such a shame he traded that soul for US dollars in the mid-1980s.

Мне нравится голос в более поздние годы ,начало 2.000-ых.Голос с возрастом стает ниже и у Дэвида ярко выражен стал его баритон.

@Hot Rockin' that would be north Yorkshire, Tadcaster. Not north riding of Yorkshire. Just opened a tin though and it is fine.
@Hot Rockin' In my experience, John Smith's is dreadful stuff. Sam Smith's and Timothy Taylor's are much better!
Heavily influenced by the great Paul Rodgers (from Middlesbrough, formerly North Riding of Yorkshire). Must be something in that River Tees water!

Why iTunes is not ? I wanna buy this song
Not bad, sounds a LOT like Free/Paul Rodgers, though. It's different than the typical braggadocio one associates with Coverdale.
Paul Rodgers would have been a local hero of Coverdale's, and the guitarist on this, Micky Moody had been in a band with Rodgers at school.
Are the backing vocalists the same ones that Joe Cocker used?
John Mayer's dirty little secret?
В
This was how incredible a singer Coverdale was until he sold his soul for the Yankee dollar, and turned into a poodle rockstar
No doubt his best work was from 74-84. But I can’t blame him for chasing the money....he was seriously in debt by the mid 80’s.
