I was 26. in 1978 This was on the jukebox in the Starr inn, in York every Sunday night I was in. Wouldn't talk to anyone whilst playing, building up to that great guitar ending. To this day it still gives me goosies. That's when I know how good a tune is and band.

in my opinion, the watch album was the best and most refined of albums i have ever heard. i watched this album performed at the ODEON, NEW STREET, BIRMINGHAM UK and hold it in my heart as the single best thing i ever did. they say a great piece of music will leave its mark on you, well this whole album did that to me, and i cherish it. thank you manfred, and may you live long and have happiness in abundance.
It was mid 80's and I was driving around San Diego in my 1970 El Camino. I had just installed a new stereo. A Yamaha cassette deck, a Clarion equalizer, a Denon amp and an Alpine amp. This was back when California was a place for dreaming. And this tape sounded amazing in that El Camino.
I'm 51 and I know this album since I was 15. This was my favorite song for like a thousand years, and so...this is the first time I ever see the video to the song and it is really exciting! Everyday I learn something new! Peace.
Absolutely my favorite song of all time? Well, possibly! Such a clever song with heart breakingly clever lyrics. 'California - look what you've done'.... breaks my heart a little every time I hear that line. Stunning song from a top album.

Such a dreamy song, i love it, brings back memories of my youth falling in love with a girl i had a crush on, well that's as far as it went but still a good time.

It was the illusion of : a kind of freedom that was a dream state by : drug use and free sex . All 70-s young people l knew who were into this new music , enjoyed the cigarette - alcohol - culture / marihuana - culture / total sexual liberties - culture . I was a bit younger than those always friendly and " enlightened " or for that time : modern- thinking youths , but never liked the cigarettes and alcohol use , and the powerful and physically stunting drugs and mostly drunken young men who wanted to have sex with any female girls they could get . It's glorified music for a life that was mostly boredom . Everyone l knew back then wanted their dream out of a confining and dull existence . The loud and overly long guitar and drum solos were perfect for drug - induced dream- time and sexual encounters . ( Pink Floyd took it to the max ) There just were no other fun cultural alternatives , except to do as your parents = the horror picture of conformity of being " old- fashioned " = secure job , and house and car ownership = stability! after their parents' horror years of World War 2 and the hard years after that = a fresh start . ( = Germany ) But dream and reality were too different even for me to find the right answer , so l was always on the outside looking in . Even back then , everyone could see that heavy and long- time sedation by cigarettes , beer and sex would not lead to paradise , but under- nourished bodies , bad hang- overs , severe physical damage = chronic health problems , and sexually transmitted diseases , even overdoses or suicides . This physical sedation also transforms into mental sedation ! Looking at physical wrecks after partiing heavily never inspired me to follow , except for 1 Manfred Mann concert , where the pipe- smoking of whatever substance put such clouds in the air that l could not make out the band on stage and was close to vomiting and passing out = not my ideal concert experience ! It all was just a happy movement to start out with that became a collective happy dream , a wish for peace that also inspired new forms of living , not just group sex or cults . California , the name alone , stood for paradise , heaven and freedom . The music was accompanief/followed by drugs and sex . After WW2 , everyone was in need of new dreams . The economies and prosperity came back , but the peace and anti- war culture = hippie culture , was just another extreme conformity . ( l personally loved! wearing jeans! every day , and with my long hair was seen by a neighbor psychologist friend to find out " what was wrong " with me = this freedom age was very suspect by the older generation / the neighbor friend , fortunately for me , found nothing " wrong " with me and l was very relieved for he was a nice person , but he stuttered , and l thought of this whole encounter as a surrealist movie scene ) I read at the time about the " baby prostitutes " ( = even a 12!- year- old girl ) dying in the toilet stalls at the Berlin Bahnhof Zoo station , and had heard of the true? or Urban Legend stories of getting secretely drugged or injected there and in other discos . It gave us the ( unsuccessful ) war on drugs , the world- wide illegal drug trade , the cartells , and American nightmare - opioid addiction of today . The music of the 70-s fit the Zeitgeist and did inspire! youths . I do like certain songs and dreams of that time myself , but will never forget the reality of wasted and dead young people . Unbelievably great music from this excellent band.... This has to be one of my favorite tracks of all time. Pity that it seems to be the Studio recording and they lip sync and play along with it. Anyway, the guitar work by Dave Flett, at 1:52 and again along with the keyboards in the outro, is so very, very good. I note that this track is credited to Sue Vickers. Sue sings it in a more laid back style (Search "Susie - California" and you will find it).
Sue Vickers was the ex-wife of Manfred's 60s-era guitarist/saxophonist Mike Vickers, and was also married to Who keyboard sideman John "Rabbit" Bundrick.
There is so much RIGHT and PERFECT about this song its hard to pick anything out of it that makes it stand out for any reason. Its the mesh of everything. Created at a time when the world was a wonderful place. Hauntingly dreamy.. thought provoking. Now i am in my late 50s... it makes me feel melancholy... like time has flown by. I am getting to the winning post end of life and this song makes my age feel even more poignant.

How're you doin' out in California
Now that you've made the grade?
Is there a chance you'd think of me
And all the things we did together?
How're you doin' out in California
Now that you've got it made?
You must be glad you made the break
But how I wish you'd stayed
Livin' out in California
Seems to suit you well
But my news is all second hand
So it's hard for me to tell
One day I'll make it out to California
See if it's what it seems
I've been there many times before
But only in my dreams

One day I'll make it out to California
See if it's what it seems

Something's keeping you away from me
California look what you've done
