- Would you like to easily expand your English vocabulary and learn new words? Would you like to learn how to turn some verbs into nouns with one simple trick? That simple trick is to use the suffix ion. ‘Ion’ is a suffix that will help you to improve your English quickly.
Suffixes are a series of letters at the end of a word that will change the meaning of the word and, in this case, change verbs into nouns. For example: if you put ‘ion’ after the verb communicate, you create the noun communication. If you want to easily communicate with others in English, JeN’s Jyugyou will help you to improve your English communication! By studying words with the suffix ion, and how to correctly add -ion to verbs to create nouns, you will expand your vocabulary and English fluency!
This English lesson contains 8 tips that will help you create nouns from verbs. These tips will help you with the spelling rules when writing the words, as well as increasing your reading skills when you see the words written.
1. Just add ‘ion’ to the ending of the verb: act = action.
2. If the verb ends with an ‘e’, erase the ‘e’ and add ‘ion’: translate = translation.
3. When the verb ends with ‘ve’, ‘be’, or ‘me’, delete those two letters and add ‘ption’: describe = description.
4. For verbs ending in ‘olve’, get ride of ‘ve’ and add ‘ution’ solve = solution.
5. If the verb ends with ‘mit’, delete ’t’ and add ‘ssion’: permit = permission.
6. For some verbs you need to add ‘ation’ and keep in mind other rules as well: prepare = preparation.
7. When the verb ends with ‘de’, delete ‘de’ and add ‘sion’: decide = decision.
8. Remember that most rules in English have exceptions. There are some words that don’t follow these tips: suspect = suspicion.
*In summary, in English when you see a word ending with - ion, - tion, or -sion, these are nouns and the ending - ion, - tion, or - sion is usually pronounced as ‘shun’ when speaking English.
By the end of today’s English lesson you will have learned how to use the ion suffix to change verbs into nouns and easily expand your vocabulary. This will help you to improve your English communication and speak English with confidence! Thank you for watching, “ION Suffix: 8 Tips for How to Change Verbs into Nouns with -ion!” I hope this English grammar lesson will be useful for you as you improve your English vocabulary. Good luck with your English studies!

Question of the Day: Please practice what you learned in today's lesson and write some sentences changing verbs into nouns using the suffix 'ion'.
For example: I am happy that they've decided to construct a new subway line along Eglinton Avenue, however the construction is taking much longer than expected.
Jen, a very enlightening lesson. I must admit that it has amazed me in the sense that I had never spotted these rules, however I knew correctly some names derived from verbs, but you don't know how much I appreciate that you gave me the opportunity to learn it grammatically, because it also helps me to know when some consonants double when they pass from verb to noun, as you have explained very well. Jen, be proud of yourself👍💖 I keep looking forwards to your next lesson.
🍁
Hi Santiago, thanks for your comment. I am very happy that this lesson was helpful for you and that my explanation made sense. 🙂
By the way, the spelling rule for when a word ends with consonant, vowel, consonant and needing to double the final consonant before adding the ending, isn't just for changing verbs into nouns. Doubling the final consonant when you have consonant, vowel, consonant is a general English spelling rule: big = bigger, run = runner, travel = travelled, swim = swimming, and so on. 😉
@@JeNsJyugyou Jen, you have given me an excellent clarification. I had noticed that before in many words, but I didn't know the general rule. I guess it’s just like in the words EXCEL > EXCELLENT, STEP >STEPPED, WRITE>WRITTEN, THIN>THINNER, etc. Very clear to me now. Thanks to you, Jen, I`ll never forget.🍁💖
@@santiepful I am glad that I could clarify that for you. ☺️
Although, write to written doesn't actually follow the rule because write ends with the vowel 'e', rather than with a consonant, vowel, consonant.
Written is just an irregular past participle which you have to memorize. It follows the same kind of pattern as a few other irregular verbs though: write - written, hide- hidden, bite - bitten, ride -ridden.
JeN's Jyugyou / ジェンの授業 my mistake. Thanks again Jen.🍀
Jen you are the best teacher ever please may God bless you for that.

Hello madam, hope you have had a great day so far.
What is the main purpose of using a noun clause?
I know it functions as a noun but why do we use it ? Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
Hello JeN! I really enjoy this video lesson. I am very thankful to you for teaching this lesson. I watched this lesson twice so that I can improve listening and gaining vocab. I really want to improve all areas such listening, writing, speaking, and grammar through your videos. Please kindly suggest me to improve my writing here. May the Lord bless you abundantly!
🙂 I am so happy to hear that this lesson was so useful for you. I am always glad to hear from you that my lessons have befitted you. ☺️
In your comment, there was only one small mistake, "Please kindly suggest ways for me to improve my writing here." The sentence 'Please kindly suggest me to improve my writing here,' is grammatically correct but has a different meaning from what I assume you intended. It means that you simply want me to recommend that you improve your writing. I hope that makes sense.
A great way to improve your writing is to practice writing a little bit every day. You could do that by commenting on videos like this, or keeping a journal and writing in it a little each day.
Thanks again for your nice comments. God Bless you as well.

Ohhh tq soo much(actually lil bad in English)
Dear teacher Jen ? I hope you are doing well .
My name is Rebaz from Kurdistan region north of Iraq , I'd like a day you discuss and speak about how people write an official message to each other.
Thanks
Thanks for your comment and suggestion, Rebaz ☺️ I will do my best to create a lesson on how to write business emails. It may take a while, but I am adding this topic to my To Do list now. I hope that everything is going well with you in Kurdistan 🇰🇬
What about active end with ve so I can't write actiption
Kindly reply because I have exam
Save
Excited
Devastating
Active
Helpless
Hopeless
Able
Justify
How I can change to noun using these steps
Hi Abdul 🤗. This lesson was only about the -ion suffix. There are other suffixes in English as well that are used to change words into nouns. For the adjective 'active' will use the -ity suffix after deleting the e and it becomes 'activity.' I wish you all the best with your exam.
Here is your list of words in their noun forms. Be careful as some of the words in your list are adjectives and some are verbs. I hope this helps ☺️
Save = Saviour
Excited = Excitement
Devastating = Devastation
Active = Activity
Helpless = Helplessness
Hopeless = Hopelessness
Able = Ability
Justify = Justification
Can you bring a full video how to change any words from noun that will be better ☺
Thanks , You very beautiful
Welcome 😊 Thanks for your nice comment, Juan. 🤗
I am watching you from Bangladesh. He could not comprehended the reason for marrying Mrs Begum; however, his spoken English was not comprehension to make understand other.
And also able end with e so I can't write ablion
This lesson was specifically about changing verbs into nouns using the -ion suffix. The word 'able' is an adjective, not a verb. The verb form of able is 'ability'. It is formed by adding a -ity suffix after deleting the e. I hope that helps 😎
Can you bring a video that can change adjective into noun like able and ability 😕 to understand if any word how I can change into noun
🌟

JeN's Jyugyou / ジェンの授業 😀
Your sooo sweet madam
Thanks a lot, Ayesha ☺️. I wish you all the best ✨.
the president always discusses everything too much . I hope his discussion ends soon 😑
Haha. Good example of the verb discuss into the noun discussion.
Don't forget that after discuss you should have an object to complete the sentence. I also get the sense that 'hope' would be a better verb than 'expect' in your second sentence.
"The president always discusses everything too much. I hope his discussion ends soon!"
@@JeNsJyugyou 😃 thank you I didn't want to use the verb "hope" but it makes more sense 😆I knew that my sentence sounds odd. I can't imagine if I write a complete essay 😆
