  • If I were you, I would watch this video and learn how to use the subjunctive mood in English! The subjunctive mood is a point that many students who study English often get confused with. Today’s lesson aims to clear up that confusion and help you create awesome subjunctive sentences!
There are two main moods in English, the indicative mood and the subjunctive mood: 1. The indicative mood is used for things are are true, that are facts. 2. The subjunctive mood is used for things that are not facts, that are imagined and hypothetical.
The subjunctive mood is mostly used in three main ways:
    1. Suggestions or recommendations
    2. Demands or requests
    3. Wishes
The most common pattern with the subjunctive mood is:
    Subject + Verb + That + person + base verb + object.
There are also 12 specific verbs that are usually used with this structure: suggest, recommend, propose, advise, demand, insist, ask, request, command, desire, wish, prefer.
Ex: Her husband suggests that she visit the doctor. I request that you subscribe to JeN's Jyugyou. They recommend that he study English grammar.
Another common structure with the subjunctive mood is for requests that are urgent or important. The subjunctive form used this way is:
It is + Adjective (which means important) + that + person + base verb + object.
The top six adjectives used in the subjunctive this way are: urgent, important, crucial, imperative, essential and vital.
Ex: It is important that she learn English grammar. It is crucial that he listen carefully. It is essential that we pay our taxes.
*Note: In British English sometimes the word ‘should’ is added to these types of sentences. In American English something the word ‘that’ is omitted. Here in Canada, both of these possibilities can be heard in Canadian English. Ex: I suggest she visit the doctor. I suggest that she should visit the doctor. I suggest she visit the doctor.
For wishes in the subjunctive mood we often use the following pattern:
I wish I were … In this situation, all pronouns must use ‘were’.
Ex: I wish I were rich. She wishes she were smarter. We wish it were sunny. They wish they were in Canada. He wishes he were famous.
We can also use would with wishes in the subjunctive mood: I wish I would win the lottery. She wishes he would call. His wife wishes he wouldn’t drink so much.
Another point for the subjunctive form is conditional sentences. Often used for giving advice, a very common sentence structure in the subjunctive mood is:
    If I were you, I would …
Ex: If I were you, I would give this video a thumbs up. If I were you, I’d study English every day.
This pattern for the subjunctive also includes other types of conditionals using ‘if’ and ‘would’ such as: If I were a bird, I would fly. If he were to win the lottery he would travel around the world.
For more examples and extra grammar tips for the subjunctive mood, be sure to watch the entire lesson.
By the end of today’s English lesson you will have learned many important tips on how and when to use the subjunctive mood that you can use to sound like a native English speaker. This lesson will to help you improve your English grammar and teach you useful sentence structures commonly used with the subjunctive mood. Thank you for watching, “The Subjunctive Mood: How to Use the Subjunctive Mood in English! Improve your English Grammar!” I hope these grammar tips will be useful for you as you improve your English and successfully talk about unreal / hypothetical situations in the subjunctive. You use too many exclamation marks! It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with Kramer getting Elaine scolded by her boss for using too many exclamation marks!

This was a really fantastic lesson! I’m a 67 year old native English speaker from the US (still) learning Spanish. I don’t ever remember having learned the subjunctive mood in school - at least not until 3rd year Spanish.
You commented that in the US we tend to drop the word “that.” We also tend to change the verb to the infinitive and do any number things that mask the subjunctive mood. So when we try to learn it in another language, whether the structure of the clause or the verb conjugation, it feels completely foreign and confusing.
I’m going to forward this to a friend who’s learning English (maybe she’ll subscribe) and I’d like to share it with my online Spanish teachers, as well. Maybe if they’re able to show that, yes, the subjunctive does exist in English, it would be easier for their students to grasp it in Spanish.
Thank you so much for this video 😊

English is my second language; my native language is Spanish , I’m living in US for 35 years. So, I feel that I haven’t learned enough English. I have a bachelor’s degree in Business and there are some days I struggle to communicate. So you have me here in YT always looking for English classes. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I will continue your videos and practice each lesson ❤

I came here trying to understand the subjunctive in English to help my Spanish, not realizing how often we use the subjunctive in English. Having said that, I’m American English speaker and some of the examples sounded strange or not how I would say them on a day-to-day basis. The subjunctive feels very formal to me in most of these examples.

(PS. Since I know you're working so hard with your English studies, I will make two small corrections to your sentences.
      1. "never stop with THESE amazing English lessons." 'This' is only used to talk about one thing, but since there is more than one lesson, you need to use 'these'. Last year I made a lesson about this, that, these, those: ua-cam.com/video/x8uTTCCI4CI/v-deo.html
      2. "I wish I would be ALLOWED to travel this winter." Would be + past particle. ex: I wish that I would be chosen. I am not sure if I mentioned that specifically, but I have a lesson about the 7 different ways to use 'would' in English: ua-cam.com/video/KNH7luWSuHU/v-deo.html )

Hi Santiago, thanks for your comment and for so many great sentence examples. ☺️
I'll go through each example for you to see if I can help. 👍🏻
      Your first sentence is perfect!
"I ask my friends not go to the beach..." is correct!
"When I was little, my mother wanted me TO BE a great boy."
The next sentence is also perfect!
The easiest way to write this sentence is, “I wish I WERE younger now."
“I wish my friend WOULD visit me today” (or if there is a possibility that your friend could visit then you can used the indicative mood with 'hope': "I hope my friend will visit me today.")

Dear Jen, in Br.English it's possible to use both "was/were" in the subjunctive ( all textbooks say). Also, if the subject is "I" you can't say "I wish I would travel to Canada next summer", but "I wish I could travel..."

    • @JeNsJyugyou
      @JeNsJyugyou  4 роки тому

Hi Lana, thank you for your comment.☺️
I never knew that about British English. In Canada we are always taught that you can't use 'was' with the subjunctive. We need to say, "I wish I were rich", and 'I wish I was rich' is incorrect. 🤓
Also, you're correct: "I wish I could travel" sounds much better and more correct than 'I wish I would travel.' 👍🏻

Thanks for your comment, Mena☺️. I am glad to hear that this lesson on the subjunctive was helpful for you. Thanks for your suggestion about a lesson on stative verbs. I will do my best to create a lesson on that topic. For most verbs they can either be used in the continuous or are stative verbs. However, 'feel' is unique.
I'll briefly explain: 'Feel' is usually a stative verb when using it to talk about your sense of touch / perception. When using 'feel' to talk about your emotions sometimes it is used as a stative verb, but can also be used in the continuous. Ie: The sunlight feels nice on my face. (You can't use the continuous because feel is used as a sense.) Vs. I feel happy today / I am feeling happy today.(Both are okay here because feel is describing an emotion, not a sense.) While I work on creating a lesson, I hope that helps a little. 😉

    • @JeNsJyugyou
      @JeNsJyugyou  3 роки тому +2

Thanks for your nice comment, Ekrem. ☺️
In this situation you can say, "It was helpful for me."
In English both 'It was helpful for me' and 'It was helpful to me' could be correct sentences depending on the context and circumstance.
"To" and "for" are prepositions and in your example "me" is the object. 'To' usually implies something is moving toward the object, while 'for' generally implies something benefiting the object. As a result, 'for' is the better choice in this situation. 🤗
