The concert that changed music and set a greater course majorly for the better. Anyone who was later to go on to complete genius was there and made the entire world so much the better because of it. Yes Ian and the lads, But many more,
I'm from up north buzzcocks were fantastic, punk was a first come basis, glad I was part of it, teens need to voice their concerns, I did back in the day, do something
Even though I might be older, and I don't understand a lot of the new fashions and music, you are correct, it's the youth that keep the world in check, (and notice how "mainstream" punk fashion is? Rappers and R&B musicians all have green hair , torn jeans, and spiked bracelets!
Most of the shots of the audience and the footage with Lydon wearing the "I survived the Texas Chainsaw Masacre" were shot at the "Notre Dame Hall", just of Leister Square in 76. The footage with Lydon wearing the yellow sleeveless cardigan is from the groups second lesser free trade hall gig in 76. The footage where Lydon is wearing a white shirt open at the chest or with the collar up is from the first free trade hall gig in 76. Don't know where the audio is from; but none of the above!
It sounds like a bootleg version from a cassette album called “Better Live Than Dead” that I bought in 1987, it said it was from one of their gigs at the 100 club???
They may have flashed the date, but the infamous first Lesser free trade hall gig in Manchester was on the 4th of June 1976 I have read and heard. The gig that was portrayed, apparently quite accurately in the film “24 hr Party People” aside from the way Tony Wilson was talking during and what not) According to that film some of the Buzzcocks and Joy Division were in attendance , Martin Hannett amongst other, but it totalled about 20 people, maybe, including the band, but everyone claims they were there! 😆
Also in the charts in 1976... Bay city rollers, Slade, Alvin stardust, Elvis , Sweet, David Cassidy, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Hot chocolate, Queen, David Bowie, the rubettes and Gary glitter (unfortunately)....
There is an audio recording of the June 76 gig ( I've got a copy on lp) but due to running time 25mins max on a cheapish vinyl cutter , had to cut 4 songs from the middle . No feelings, satellite, submission & no fun.. These are available now but are rather pointlessly edited so you don't get the crowd response - that by the end is enthusiastic when asked "wanna hear No Fun again?"
It was buzzcocks (or rather shelley/devoto) who first saw the pistols in london then offered to put the pistols on at their college in bolton, but it was changed to the lesser free trade hall...
@@geofftayloruk and apparently his out of control behaviour was encouraged by malcolm mclaren as it gave the bands image more of a punk enigma. Pity it also resulted in his death. Its a sick world isnt it!
the only bits of footage from Manc are where Johns wearing that yellow cardy, sounds nothing like a bootleg i had years ago of the lesser free trade hall gi,mine was shit quality, this wherever its from sounds a lot better, maybe someone cleaned sound quality up?
A slight problem being .....they didn't play 'I wanna be me' at the famous June 76 Manchester gig. This video does use some footage from the gig ,Rotten in moth eaten yellow top, Jones in black boiler suit & Matlock straight jeans with white tshirt . - one of the few gigs that none of them were wearing 'let it rock'/'Sex' clothing from 430 kings rd (Malcolm & Vivs clothing shop)
I think it was confirmed above, the video is indeed the pivotal Manchester Gig on 4/6/1976, but the audio is them at the 100 club in Oct or November of '76, right before the Grundy debacle. I always could be wrong, don't attack! :) but listen to how tight they are. And, I mentioned above, this was released as a bootleg in 1987 called "Better Live Than Dead", and it said it was from the 100 Club in London.
They played two shows. One on the fourth of june, and one on the twentieth. This is (from the newspaper clipping shown) is from the twentieth. Which means it ain't the gig spoken of in 24hpp.
Too bad I was 8 years old in 1976 and listening to my older sister's records. Stuff like "Silly Love Songs" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." Thanks big sister for turning me into a total lame-o.
@katoness Yep punk was just a reaction anyway, a reaction against the hippies - Johnny liked Hawkwind before he joined the Sex Pistols and if you listen to Hawkwind LP "Warrior on the Edge of TIme" released in 1975 some of it sounds a bit punky and that wasn't deliberate.
Many member's of the audience went on to form band's after seeing the sex pistols at the lesser free trade hall that night. Q. now how many of today's so called band's can say they inspired the audience? A. none.
@lazaru2000 I was born at the end of the year this was recorded. I am now steaming rapidly into middle age. Burton on Trent is about 50 miles SE of Manchester. This is a free UA-cam video, not a documentary. In terms of time, space and money, does any of it f***ing matter!?
@stormchasers25 i totally agree with you.Matlock left because unluckily Pistols were already into a malcomizing process = arise at the stardome level as fast as possible despite the music. As lately it was told by Lydon himself, they were just too young to be aware about things around them.
@lazaru2000 Malcolm only did small things for the band, he had no control on them. He only stolen them money. He was desperate after the Grundy's show, he failed with several records companies, etc, etc. And in the end he tried to make us believe he invented punk and the Sex Pistols. He wanted a singer, yes, but he wanted someone like Iggy Pop, and he failed. Bernie Rodhes told him and the band about Johnny Rotten, and the rest is history.
@Hellpartyboy2009 you can't say that. GD is great, it's just different because the band was created 15 years later and the History of the group is different. you can't say that without arguments
@stormchasers25 Yeah, i can't stand Syd idolization too and his fans thinking "he was The Sex Pistols". On the contrary i think he was a fan himself on the stage living for the Pistols. Indeed he died just when the Pistols brooke up. I dunno if he wanted really to be the new Lydon, but the guy acted quite pathetic. Matlock - a band needs somebody calm on stage as Entwistle was too ;-) - was an ace bassman and music writer and as evidence of that we can listen how these song still rock today.
Glen could play but his backing vocals were so horrible. Listen to him on Pretty Vacant. It's horrible and I'm pretty sure that is what annoyed the band into kicking him out. Just my opinion. Sid was doing alright before he got into heroin. Listen to his early performances. He was alright and he looked fucking amazing!!!
Check out his harmonies on any of the Rich Kids tracks , and he has albums done recently , he has a good singing voice . Probably too in tune for the Sex Pistols .
This must have been the musical equivalent of walking through a jungle, bending down, and finding a huge rough diamond. Thank god it was recorded.
in the audience was Joy Division/ new order, Buzzcocks and The Smiths. Thank you sex pistols.
Wasn't Morrissey at the second gig?
Edit: Just realised it's an eight year old comment.

Mick Hucknall was also there.
Mark e Smith was there too
Tim Burgess from The Charlatans was there too

Fantastic, historic footage. A truly legendary gig. Read David Nolan's excellent "I Swear I Was There"

this show changed history of music, on this gig Joy Division was born
Manchester band slaughter and the dogs were on the bill as well.. great Manchester punk band
Top band👍🏻
Still going 😊
It seems the original footage wouldn't have been edited with slow motion shots. Still and all, thrilled to see this.
The gig that changed the world... #June4th1976
if i could go back in time it be to see this gig and chat to the people in the audience. that be so cool!

this is not from Manchester, it from Burton on Trent 76
The origins of Joy Division
Not to mention The Fall, The Smith and Magazine off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure that Buzzcocks had form by then.
Adam Gregory oh right !

Thank you very much for sharing!
sup melee friend
Michael Schlag I am doing fine, how about you????
pretty a-ok
Pistols died the day they sacked Matlock....he wrote the tunes....Sid didn't have a clue...
You are right ,it become cartoon especially on the US tour. Cook said the Winterland gig was the worst show they ever played.
Sid Vicious had the right image for the Pistols but he didn’t have any talent. Matlock could fucking play, no doubt about it.

What did the Hall have against free trade? That's what I want to know..
It should be "Fewer Trade Hall" as well, to be grammatically correct.
@@bubo1 oh, this just gets worse and worse doesn't it?
I'm of a right mind to pen a letter about this. No - a _strongly worded_ letter.
😂 the lesser free trade hall was a small room within the free trade hall. It only held 150 or so. The free trade hall itself held around 3000 seated.
Brilliant.
